External Drive won't show up when connected to Airport via USB Hub

I just got a new external HD and hooked it up out of the box. There were no problems until I tried copying 117 files to it. An error was encountered (Couldn't complete command due to something or other) and after that I never showed up on my computer again. I tried rebooting... hooking it up directly to the computer...the whole bit. Nothing.
So I then hooked it up to our laptop. It was found, I erased it, hooked it up to the desktop... it was found there as well... but whenever I hook it up wirelessly via the USB Hub and Airport... I can't get it.
Everything else that's hooked up to the hub is still working wirelessly (Printer Internet).
Is this an isssue with the drive?

Ya' know.. I'm not totally sure. I went to Airport Utility... selected my base station, clicked on Manual Setup... clicked on Disks and saw that my USB Drive was listed. After that I opened the finder, went to network, connected to my base station from there and my USB Drive popped up and I mounted it.
It's been working fine since.

  • Belkin UPS does not show up when connected to MacPro via USB

I have just replaced my aging DP G4 machine with a MacPro. I added a UPS with a USB connection. It was advertised as being Mac compatible.
After many tries to get the horrible Belkin software to work, I gave up. The worst part is that The UPS will not show up even in the Energy Saver preference pane.
I checked if the USB connection is working OK on the UPS and it seems to work, although it reports itself as "Cypress Semiconductor Serial to USB" in the System profiler.
Any ideas of what I could try to get this to work? As of now, it I am not around to shut down the machine, the battery backup is useless...

I can't offer any real help here other than to say that the Belkin UPS does work with a Mac Pro. I was running one on my G5 and when I replaced that last week with a Mac Pro I simply plugged it in and it worked.
I have never tried to use the Belkin software; I read somewhere on these forums I think that it's rubbish and because OS X supports UPS out of the box I have always relied on that.
I am connected via USB. The Energy Saver UPS panel simply shows the UPS name as "UPS", and in System Profiler itsimply says "Belkin".
BTW, I also have a Belkin UPS on my wife's iMac and it does exactly the same.
I know they work because we have had power outs here and the UPS devices have kicked in just fine.
I am guessing—but this is only a guess—that you may have some remnants of the Belkin software still on your system and that this may be interfering with Energy Saver. I would maybe try to do a finder search (apple+F from the desktop) for "Belkin" and see if that shows anything. Maybe ask Belkin what gets installed so you could check it's all gone?

  • External drive doesn't show volume when used internally (and vv)

I have an early 2011 MBP 17" where I have replaced the optical drive with the 750G hard drive that came with the computer. in the hard drive spot I put in an SSD. Recently I got a 1T 2.5" drive and I want to copy all the files from the internal 750G to the 1T and then put the 1T in the optical drive bay to replace the 750G.
I got everything copied to the 1T drive via USB - i put the drive in a USB 3.0 enclosure that I've used before with this machine. everything copied fine. so i swapped out the 750G for the 1T in the laptop. when I booted up, the drive did now show in the finder. in Disk Utility it shows up as a device and the indented volume is a greyed out and showing a system volume designation (something like disk3d or whatever the OS uses for this [I didn't make note of the specific volume name]). when I put the disk back in the USB enclosure, it worked fine.
So i formatted the 1T in the macbook, interally, and it works fine that way. but when I put the 750G in the external enclosure, thinking I could copy the files that way [external to internal]) - the 750G does the same thing: the device shows up ok in Disk Utility but the volume is grey and shows as an OS volume name. like the 1T I am not able to mount it or do anything other than format it.
So I am at a loss. why can I not copy files to an external drive and put that in the machine internally? this is the way I've done this kind of thing over the years. this is the first time I am doing this with the MBP. what can I do in order to get this to work so I can get all the files on the 750G onto the 1T and work in my MBP?
I know I can leave the 750G in the computer, connect a drive and copy it all over to it. then put the 1T in the computer and copy all the files off the external drive to the 1T. likely this would work. however a) i don't have a large enough external drive to do this with and b) i'd like to understand what is going on here and solve it as i may need to do this in the future.
    any ideas?
    thanks!

How did you backup your internal hard drive to the external?  In order to boot a Macintosh has to be partitioned using the GUID scheme and then formatted as Mac OS extended Journaled. Both operations are performed in Disk Utility. You can clone your drive to to the external using a utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. I'm not sure what you expect to accomplish without install discs. When you clone a drive you're making an exact copy. You shoud probably look at calling Apple and requesting a set of original discs or purchase a full install of Snow Leopard at http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

  • External Drive Doesn't Show Up When Booting

I have an iMac (intel) 10.5.8, and I want to reset my Macintosh HD and I found I could do it using disk utility when booting from another source. Unfortunatly I don't have the installation disc (I bought the mac 2nd hand) so I tried backing up my computer to an wxternal hard drive and booting it from that. so I turned on the computer and held Option until the Macintosh HD showed up. I was told my other external drive would too, but it doesn't, so i can only boot it from the Macintosh HD. IF anyone can help that would be great! or come up with other options to reset my HARD DRIVE!! Thank you.

  • Toshiba external drives won't show up at all on my computer (Summer 2010 MacBook Pro) since I updated it to Mavericks.

Ever since I updated my laptop to Mavericks, my toshiba drives each do a different thing when I plug them in. One of them, which is formatted for mac, works just fine. The second one, formatted for windows doesn't mount, but shows up in the disk utilities. It worked perfectly fine on Snow Leopard, and seems to work on any other computer running Mavericks. I bought a third drive to transfer all the contents and reformat the second drive for mac, but the third drive doesn't show up on my laptop or my home computer (iMac), which is running Snow Leopard.
Anybody have any ideas or solutions as to what's going on?

my hone keeps flashing and beeping when i connect it via the USB to my new Imac

    peterjimmyclark,
One of your USB connections may be loose/not fully inserted, or it may be a bad USB cable. It happened to me once, when a powered USB hub was not properly seated.

  • External drive won't show on my computer but will on others...

I have a drive which has been causing me issues (firewire 800). Today, while trying to copy some files from that drive to a new one, both drives disappeared on the screen. I restarted the drives, and the new drive (Glyph) showed up, but the old one is not showing at all. These are both firewire800 drives running through a hub into my laptop. I cannot get the old drive to show no matter what I do. I have tried directly connecting the drive to the laptop, no dice. I even tried switching the drive into another enclosure, no luck.
However, I decided to try plugging the drive into the family iMac, and the drive shows up straight away. I thought changed the drive name might fix the issue but no luck. I have done repair disk in disk utility, and it shows no issues with the drive.
This must be some settings issue on my Macbook Pro - what do I do?

  • Help!! Hard Drive Won't Show Up when trying to reinstall Leopard!

I am having a huge problem with my early 2006 iMac. If I turn it off, I have to reinstall the Leopard software. I have tried using Disk Warrior to restore the hard drive, I run disk Utility to repair permissions and all I get is invalid key length, volume check failed Filesystem verify and repair failed. Now nothing shows up to Select a destination. What do I do? I have a couple of weeks before I can get a new desktop (waiting for tax return)

    Hi Elizabeth Salcido;
From everything that you say you have done, it sounds like the disk in your iMac is going bad.
I certainly hope you have a backup because it sounds like you may very well need it soon.

  • Connecting to Airport via usb modem

I've been told that I need a usb to ethernet converter to connect my modem to my airport express station. Has anyone else had this problem, recomend the right piece of kit or modem?

A usb to ethernet converter will not work.
You need to replace the USB modem with an ethernet modem.
    Check out the following website.
    Reviews of equipment
    http://www.adslguide.org.uk/reviews/
As most ADSL Modem Routers are setup through a web browser you should be fine with a Mac.
Personally I use plusnet and Netgear ADSL Modems. One is a DG834G combined device and the other is a DM602 Modem Router connected to an AEBS.
I would also check out ADSL Nation's X-Modem.
    http://www.adslnation.co.uk/products/xmodem-ce.php
which can also be used in conjunction with an AEBS or AX.

  • Anyone had any luck scanning with hp all in one connected on airport express usb bonjour

Can someone tell me if apple will provide any support for scanning device included in hp all in one printers when connected on airport with USB bonjour network?
From what I have read so far, it would seem that the only way to get a network printer to work decently is to use it with an airport extreme base station with an ethernet cable.  The usb "way" of the airport express doesn't seem to handle any fancy utility like ink level, test page or scanning.
Anyone have a solution other than that of buying an airport extreme base station ?
Sorry for my english, i'm from québec Canada (french canadien)
    Thanks for any help

Can someone tell me if apple will provide any support for scanning device included in hp all in one printers when connected on airport with USB bonjour network?
Apple receives the printer driver software from various manufacturers. So far, none of the printer manufacturers have chosen to include extra features in the "USB network" versions of the software. Since this is a user forum, none of us here have any knowledge about what future plans may be.
Your question really should be directed to the manufacturer of your all-in-one device. While we can't speak for Apple, it would be logical to assume that they would include this software shortly after it is made available by the printer manufacturer.
From what I have read so far, it would seem that the only way to get a network printer to work decently is to use it with an airport extreme base station with an ethernet cable.
That's correct. Another way of saying the same thing is that if you want your all-in-one device to function correctly on a network, then look for a network all-in-one device, not a USB device.  A properly configured wireless all-in-one would also work as a network device, since it connects to the network, not to USB.

  • Connecting 6720 Classic via USB crash PC USB devic...

When connecting 6720 Classic via USB cable to my Acer laptop all USB ports on laptop seize to work and Windows display a message that the USB device has malfunctioned. Eventually the PC is permanently stucked and only way to proceed is reset laptop on power button and prior to that remove the laptop charger to entirely power it off and let it reboot on battery. Harddisk controller is permanently indicating with a green light but harddisk is not spinning. When this happens the Nokia phone does not prompt for USB usage (connection type) and is also hanging in application execution for a while. I would like to be able to configure the phone not to charge via USB, but have not found a way to do that. I believe that the charging via USB is creating a low level hw driver and power surge problem in my laptop. Problem is not consistent but happens from time to time. When connecting the normal 230 VAC charger to Nokia device so the Nokia device is charging when connecting to laptop via USB the problem does not occur. In this situation the Nokia device will not try to charge from USB connection.
Any possibility to disable the charging over USB on the Nokia 6720 Classic device??

I had the same problem with my 6720 when I connected it to my HP laptop via USB to download maps. It crashed my computer making all USB ports unusable until I restarted the computer again. I think it happened after I downloaded the necessary software upgrade. I had to eventually use bluetooth to transfer maps data to my phone. It worked without any hitches. Can someone at Nokia fix this problem with the USB?

  • Time capsule won't recognise external hard drive, even when formatted correctly and connected to a powered USB hub

    Hey
i have an apple time capsule (not the very latest one, but the one before that) and i am trying to connect my 1.5TB toshiba hard drive to it. i understand that it needs to be powered, so i purchased a usb hub ("usb hub man" by Gadget Geek) and bought an adapter to power it.
The hard drive won't show up in finder or disk utility, however i can see it in airport utility.
it is formatted correctly - Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) and works perfectly fine from my macbook pro usb port.
Also, when i connect a smaller hard drive to the hub (16GB) that shows up in finder as normal.
so it seems that everything is perfectly fine, however this 1.5TB hard drive just wont show up in finder.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is the case? my guesses are that i need to get a better quality usb hub, or that i might have to get a powered hard drive altogether rather than trying to power it with the hub.
    Thanks

The hard drive won't show up in finder or disk utility, however i can see it in airport utility.
You would not expect it to show up in disk utility .. it does not work on network drives.
Finder may or may not be able to see it.
If the airport utility is showing the drive you have some possibility.
Did you GUID partition the drive .. or is it still MBR.. ie if it was originally formatted for PC it will be MBR and won't work.. so put it on the Mac again and change the GUID partition.. I would also set a smaller partition size.. the internal drive of the TC is partitioned though you cannot see them.. put a first partition less than 1TB and see how it goes.
In finder.. don't forget ML has issues with network drive.. make sure you tick all the extras in finder preferences.. and if the drive won't mount try to do it manually.. go .. connect to server.
AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress.. where you use the actual name or IP.
Also is the power supply for the hub at least 2A preferably more.. so the hub is powered but the disk is not powered??

  • After installing snow leopard my external hard drive won't show up on screen or backup

Afer installing leopard my external hard drive won't show up on my desk top.  It also won't backup my hard drive with time machine. I need help.

Try going to finder preferences, general, make sure show these items on desktop external disks is clicked. You can also go to sidebar (same pane) and click it there so it will show when you open your HD.  Time Machine>system preferences>time machine>turn it off click select disk, make sure the correct disk is selected, the turn TM back on.  Hope this helps.
