External Drives Missing from Event Library

My external drives do not appear in the event library. Only my system drive. Specifically, the external drives show up when the project is launched but they disappear almost immediately.
I know there was a problem with time machine drives doing something similar but this is not the case here. My drives are correctly formatted and have never been used for TM.
Oddly things were working fine until the program got hung up on launch and I deleted the prefs (HUGE mistake)
Since then, I have deleted preferences and reinsatlled the application twice to no avail and restarted. Program launches, I see the drives, then they vanish.
I am at a loss.
Thanks for your help.
Running FCP X 10.0.3 on 10.7.2 with 16GB of RAM.
Thanks

We have seen problems when there is a folder on the root of the drive named "video" or some other name that makes FCX think it is a camera card and not a drive. If so, rename that folder and restart FCX.
Of course, you probably know that the drive has to be formatted MAC-OS

  • I do not see my external drive in the Events Library and cannot choose it to import media to. Can you help please?

I do not see my external hard drive in the Events Library pane. How do I get my media to import to my external hard drive instead of Macintosh HD please?

Hi Tom, Thank you for your reply. Please forgive my ignorance. I did try to find the answer here but I am new at this.  Could you direct me to that thread please? Yes the external hard drive is used for time machine and I did see something at one time regarding an issue but evidently it didnt sink in or stick. The drive is a g-raid I have had for several years used on a macbook pro but now I have a new imac and fcpx. works fine with all other apps, when the drive came out of the box it said preformatted and just ran with it.

  • Events on remote disks are missing from event library

The iMovie events on remote disks are missing.  I've looked for the com.apple.iMovieApp.plist file and it's missing (was a solution I found from earlier discussions).  The icon for the remote disks shows a disk and a yellow caution symbol.
I have a directory on this remote drive with iMovie events.  How can I reconnect these events back into iMovie?

Do you not have a backup copy of your itunes library?
If not, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod:  File>Transfer Purcahses

  • IPhoto icon missing from event library in iMovie

When in iMovie, the iPhoto icon does not appear in the event library? It was there but now is missing. I am not sure if my sone (3) deleted it or what. Please help!

I should clarify that all my iPhoto movies had been available previously and I had no problem viewing them in iMovie.

  • How do you import photos from a library on an external drive to the current library running in iPhoto?

How do you import photos from a library on an external drive to the current library running in iPhoto? I have a few different pictures in each library and would like to have all my pictures in both libraries. The library on the external drive is my backup. I would appreciate any help.

Depends on exactly what you want to do.
Just move some of the Photos? FIle -> Export from one and export the shots to the Finder. Then import them to the other.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
Move the photos and all versions and metadata: use iPhoto Library Manager it's the only way to do this while preserving everything. Merge two Libraries into one?
If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager

  • Photos in library missing from Events? I have a solution

This is a continuation from an answered question here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15830476#15830476, but with a new twist and a solution that I found myself. Hope it helps others:
After doing a corrupt library rebuild, I noticed some photos missing from events but still existing in the library. Read the above discussion for full background then come back if you'd like.
I found photos that I could see in "Photo" view but could not see in "Events" view. I even chose one particular photo by filename. When I searched for it while in "events" view, it appeared as the sole result but it did not have an event name above it like it should have (check this by searching for a photo by name while in "Events" view). It was just sitting there like a sad eventless orphan. So I grabbed that photo with my mouse pointer and dragged it over to the navigator bar and dropped it on "Events". And this worked! I now had a new event with only that photo in it and the event was named the same name as the photo. Now the photo was magically back in Events. Since this problem was occurring with a lot of photos we took over the last month and they were intermingled by date with other photos taken over the last month (from other cameras or imported from email attachments) that were correctly in "Events", then I went to the photo view, grabbed a whole bunch of photos, many of which were not in an event and some that were, and dragged them over to the "Events" item in the tree and dropped them on it. It gave me a warning like "These photos cannot be in two events at the same time so they will all be moved into a new event" with an option to "Cancel" or "Create". I hit create and oila, I had a new event that graciously adopted all the sad orphan photos and also kidnapped some photos from other events too. I just went in, reorganized them back to proper places (thank goodness they were all recent and there were only 250 or so and not 1000s) and I am happy. Provided this works in the long term, it was an interesting workaround for a bug that I don't know the cause and I'm glad to share with all of you.
By the way, I'm using Snow Leopard and iPhoto 09' with all the lasted software updates on an Intel iMac Core 1 Duo.

By the way, I was able to confirm now (I think) that all photos in the library are assigned to events by looking at the totals in "Photos" and matching it with the sum of photos and movies when "Events" is selected. Unfortunately, I didn't check to see if this was also the case before I did my fix, but if anyone is missing photos in Events that are definitely visible in the Photos view, please check these to sets of numbers and see if you can identify the discrepancy before applying my fix. That would be good proof of the bug.

My iTunes library exists on the external drive under /itunes...
I have purchased a new mini mac and I want to leave the library where it is on the external drive but move to new mini mac and have it show as it did on the old mini mac..
what do i need to do ?
I have found multitude of articles about moving itunes to external drive or other similar things but I don't want to move itunes from the external drive, just change mini mac machines and have everything in itunes the same..
    Thanks

I had already tried that one and got this...
below is screen shot of what is on the new mac mini
and what is on the external drive now connected to the new mac mini..
There are no media files on the mac mini just the library files and on external just media files..
Do I need to copy anything over from the old mac mini ? xml files ? .. the itunes folder on old mini is about 840mb in size which looks to have artwork ect ? .. I am fairly computer literate, but this one has me stumped.. ?

  • How do I move files from Event Library to Project Library?

How do I move Files from Event Library to Project Library? I tried drop and drag, that didn't work. I am new to Apple. I have always had a windows box b4 this. If anyone can help, please do. Thanks
    Alain

welcome argardner to the  boards..
you're missing the concept of iM .. you don't move 'files' from Event to Project Library.. Events is the big box of all your imported clips; now, from that box of bricks, you drag the clips into all kind of projects.. you can 're-use' the same clip again'n again in many projects.. you can use all clips of all Events in one Project.. or all clips of one Event in two projects.. or..
    spend some time here:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#imovie
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iMovie08_GettingStarted.pdf
the concept of Events & Projects, Clips and Libraries is at first glance very different to 'normal' editing apps, but you'll get convenient to it within minutes..

From here you can select the library on the external drive and have iPhoto open it.

  • Random sequential groups of photos missing from Events and iPhoto Slideshow but are in an Album. How do I recover or copy photos back to Events and rebuild slideshow?

Random sequential groups of photos missing from Events, an Album I created, and a slideshow using the photos. This "appears" to have happened when upgrading to Yosemite. When I use iPhoto Library Manager, I see two entries for the Event Information for the date in question, same name, same number of photos, but different sizes. The smaller has the image number but no photo for the given date; the larger has the photos.
Image path for the version with all photos: /Volumes/Promise Pegasus/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Previews/2010/2010_05_24/IMG_0697.jpg
Image path for the version with missing photos: /Volumes/Promise Pegasus/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Previews/2010/2010_05_24_2/IMG_0697.jpg (NOTE the _2 added to the image number.)
I assume that I have to get the missing pictures back in Events so I can reload back into the Album. Hopefully, the slideshow will magically be better.
    Help!

That's an indication that the link/file path between the thumbnail and the master file has been broken.  Do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • ITunes library on external drive, starting without causes library chaos

I have my iTunes library on an external drive (WD MyBook USB). The iTunes library is consolidated into one directory and has been working fine under OSX 10.4. I could disconnect the drive, access and use iTunes on the MBP (for example ripping CDs or browsing iTunes Store) and then when I reconnect the drive it would sync back, and show the full library.
Now though I find that when I disconnect my external drive iTunes sets the library to the Users/Mike/Music/iTunes/ directory and when I reconnect the external drive it doesn't recognise that the audio files are now available again i.e. go back to using the library file on my external drive.
I may be misinterpreting / misrepresenting what happens when using an external drive but the behaviour does seem to have changed recently. I've twice had to reset and rebuild my library when starting iTunes to recognise the external drive recently. The process works, it's just slow and tedious.
I've recently upgraded to OSX 10.5.2. Don't know if that makes any difference?

Using an EHD to run iTunes from has always worked this way. If you don't have the EHD available & open iTunes, iTunes will default the location of the iTunes music folder back to the main drive as that's where iTunes thinks the location is supposed to be. All you have to do is close iTunes, boot up the EHD, & re-open iTunes, problem solved.
I know it's annoying. I couldn't tell you how many times I forgot to have the EHD available to iTunes when I was still on my old PC. Usually I would catch it immediately, other times I would have ripped a CD or purchased from the store, realize the problem, then have to copy all of the new files over to the EHD, & delete them from the main drive. It does the exact same thing on a Mac, no way around it. Hope this helps.

My Itunes Library and iPhone have fallen out of sync on music over the yearsare - how can I compare my itunes library with my Iphone  to see what songs are missing from my library so I can then bring my Library up to date

    Hello Solid Buck,
Thank you so much for providing the details about the duplicate song issue you are experiencing.  It sounds like you would like to remove the duplicate songs that will not play on your iPhone, but when you connect it to iTunes, iTunes only shows you one copy of the song on your iPhone.
In this situation, I recommend deleting the individual songs that do not play directly from your iPhone.  I found the steps to do this on page 61 of the iPhone User Guide (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf):
Delete a song from iPhone: In Songs, swipe the song, then tap Delete.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

how can i move a vlc movie held on my external drive onto my itunes library (so i can then load it onto my ipad to watch?

That is the only logical conclusion. There is an easy solution. On the Mac app store download a free app called smartconverter. It is free. You just drag and drop file into app and it will convert to any file u want. I hope that foxes your issue

If you have a considerable photograph and/or movie collection you may want to consider off loading those to the EHD too. Here are Apple's article showing how handle iTunes & iPhoto libraries.
