External drives no longer mounting on other Mac since Leopard Install

I have recently upgraded my old iMac to a Mac Mini with Leopard, however since using my Iomega 320GB External Hard Disk and also my 2GB Kingston USB Stick on my Mini they no longer mount on my old iMac, it's like Leopard has somehow created a volume on them ensuring they won't mount elsewhere anymore.
I still have lots of files on my old iMac that I need to transfer over to my Mini so this is a problem to me.
Any ideas?

  • Daisy-Chained External Drive No Longer Mounting

I have two external hard drives daisy-chained (firewire 800) to my iMac. The hard drive directly connected my iMac mounts fine. The daisy-chained hard drive no longer mounts, after mounting perfectly fine for a few months. I've tried restarting, etc with no success. Any help would be appreciated.

    moretoexplore wrote:
No, it does not mount directly. I did however try using the other hard drive's power cord and it mounted without problem. But this doesn't fix the problem.. only one drive is mounting. At least it seems I have ruled out a more serious problem with the drive itself. I'm contacting Lacie to get a new power cord. Hopefully, with a new power cord, this will resolve the issue and it isn't some sort of daisy-chain issue.
I think you have solved the problem by elimination.
You can prove that it's the power cord by using the "bad" one on the working drive. If it stops working, it's guaranteed to be the power cord.
I believe that there were some issues with some of the LaCie Power Supplies.

  • Firewire 800 external drive no longer mounting

My firewire 800 external hard drive is no longer mounting on my MBP. It powers up, spins, but has no reaction to being plugged into my computer. I've tried connecting it and the turning it on, and connecting it while it was already turned on. I've tried different cables and different types of adapter cables (fw800 to 400, fw800 to USB, etc.), but there is no communication between my drive and my Mac. Same goes if I connect it to my wife's Macbook, or my iMac at work.
I recently had the logic board and left i/o board replaced on my MBP, I'm not sure if this is relevant since the drive has worked since the replacements and I get the same results on other Macs.
    What should I do next?

who makes the drive set up?
OWC for example has a history of bad power supplies that make the drive not accessible (drive spins up but never spins all the way up)

  • Shared external hard no longer visible to other mac running 10.4

Running 10.4 on iMac G5 and connecting to mac mini running 10.6. The mac mini has a firewire connected drive that I used to mount from my iMac. Suddenly, as of a few days ago, I can no longer mount the volume. When I double click my short-cut, it prompts me for my ID & password, and then tell me "Mount failed - Could not mount volume “drive-name.”
From a Finder window I click on Network and see my mac mini listed but when I click to connect and enter my credentials (administrator on both machines) I see the mount points on the internal hard drive but external drive is no longer listed. I've tried repairing permissions on both Mac's but still not working. Any suggestions?
I found a similar post (https://discussions.apple.com/message/10136761?messageID=10136761) but it never listed a solution. Please help!
PS - I can still access the shared external drive from a Macbook Pro running 10.6.

    Well BDAqua,
I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that your suggestions seemed on the right track buy neither worked. On the Mac Mini, /volumes only contained two items, one for my internal hard drive and one for the external hard drive. The iMac showed only its internal drive. there were no duplicate entries with numbers appended to the names. I looked under my home directory/Library/Favorites and deleted everything in there (for both Macs). Rebooted both machines and still could not see the external drive.
The good new is that it's working now! I don't quite understand why, but here is what I did. On the iMac OS X 10.4) I opened a Finder window, looked under Networks, and saw four items listed; Library, Mac mini, Mac-Mini, and Servers. I had two entries for my Mac Mini. The first entry (Mac mini) was correct. When I tried connecting to Mac-Mini, it came up as a SMB/CIFS connection showing WORKGROUP and my ID. When I entered my password, I got the message ... The alias "Mac-Mini" could not be opened because the original item could not be found. It then offered me the choices to fix or delete. When I tried to delete, I got ... The operation could not be completed because you do not have sufficient privilages for "Mac-Mini". Hmmm.
I then enable my root account on the iMac, logged into it, and tried the same operation. This time it allowed me to delete the bogus entry for Mac-Mini. Then I then connected to the Mac mini and, lo and behold, my external drive was back! I logged into my other accounts and they all still have the bogus Mac-Mini entry but the shortcuts to the external drive are working.
I gave this long winded explanation hoping that you or someone else might UNDERSTAND what happened. I would also like to figure out how to delete the bogus Mac-Mini entries in the other accounts. Thanks for all your help!

  • External drive no longer mounts or unmounts or formats. Help!

I have a 1TB external Seagate drive which is used to store my time machine backup for an iMac (2010).  My time machine is failing as it says there is no backup disk.  I ran disk utility.  I see it on the external drive on the list below the line on the drive listings.  I see the external drive and the time machine volume indented below it.  I verified the external disk and it says it is fine.  However it will not let me mount the external drive or the time machine partition.  I cannot even re-format the disk because it says it cannot be unmounted (which is obvious it it does not let me mount it).  It is connecting to the drive because it can see the verify results.  I also tried every combination of unplugging power and cables to both the unit and the Mac itself.
    Question(s):
    1.  Is there anyway to remount the external seagate drive?
    2.  Can I format it without mounting it.  I don't care if I lose anything as it is all time machine backup files only
    3.  Do I need to format it on my windows PC and then reformat it again on a Mac!?
Help I am at my wit's end!!
    Thanks

  • External drives no longer mounting

I have two external drives connected via Firewire. The Lacie d2 is partitioned in two and it mounts automatically every morning when I start up the computer. The other is a NewerTech with a built-in Firewire/USB hub that I use to clone my iMac using SuperDuper. I only turn it on when I'm going to run SD because it's noisy. I bought a Seagate Barracuda drive and put in in a Macally enclosure for my daughter. I hooked it up via FW and turned it on. It mounted, a window popped up saying it couldn't be read and I clicked the button to Initialize, which opened Disk Utility. I clicked on Partition, then Options and chose the GUID partition. I clicked Partition and it chugged away for about an hour, getting nowhere. I then chose Erase and Zero Out Data. A window came up saying it couldn't be erased because it wasn't configured, and the drive icon disappeared. I turned it off and back on – no icon. I switched from FW to USB – no luck. I restarted with the drive on – no icon. Now neither of my other two drives will mount. They don't show up in Disk Utility or System Preferences > Startup Disk. I would appreciate any explanations of what I've done wrong and how to fix it. Thank you.
    Cheers, Peter

Thank you for the information, baltwo. The problem now is that none of my drives mount, so I can't do anything with them. They don't show up on the Desktop, in Disk Utility or in System Preferences > Startup Disk. When I turn on the drive I use with SuperDuper, SD says it can't be found. In System Profiler > Firewire, I get a Warning, in red, Unable to list Firewire devices.

  • After 10.5.6 Update, external drives no longer mount

For some time, I have been using a Western Digital external drive for my Time Machine back-ups. Sometime after the 10.5.6 upgrade (Dec), When I plugged in the drive I get a "USB Over Current Notice: A USB device is currently drawing too much power. The hub to which it is attached to will be deactivated."
I assumed the drive had failed, so I bought another drive (A Verbatim). It mounted fine, so I formated it to use for my Time Machine back up and it then it immediately refused to mount once it was reformatted. Neither drive will mount, though other USB devices like memory sticks mount fine.
There is a discussion strand about a problem in Time Machine after the 10.5.6 upgrade, however, all the fixes posted assume that the drive will mount and you can then use the Terminal Application to repair a damaged file on the external drive.
    I'm stuck. Any advice?

Is the drive attached to a powered hub? Bus-powered drives often cause this problem as they start to fail. Des the drive work if attached to your MBP?

Again, the hub question. If you are using a powered hub perhaps its power supply brick is failing.

  • Drives no longer mount - Only after restart do they mount

Upgrade to from 10.4 to 10.5 and ran all updates...currently have 10.5.4. My external drives no longer mount when i plug them in via usb port. Worked perfectly before upgrade. Additionally my ipod wont mount either. They dont show up in disc utility either...However if i have these devices plugged in with the computer turned on (and they aren't mounting) and i restart my computer then when it boots up again they mount and function just fine. but if i unmount and turn them off and turn them back on...they dont mount.
    any suggestions?

    Hi grant862
I seam to be having the same issue. I have a number of Flash cards and a flash card reader, well tow card readers actually. I cant get the cards to mount. I have tried swapping usb cables and card readers. I have tried both readers in all my USB ports (17" Mac Book - 10.5.4). The only way that I can get them to mount is if I plug the cards back into the cam, eras an connect them. I think there is a software glitch somewhere. I don't think its the usb ports as I have tried keyboards and mice connected via these ports with no issue. I don't expect an answer to this, but Grant - if you are still out there - I wanted you to know you weren't alone. I am going to try re-installing the 10.5.4 combi download and see what happens. Oh yes and 'repair permissions' (which I have already done once...) but am beginning to think that this is just a bit like saying a mantra as a way of calming me.

Apple Senior tech lady deleted all my external drive data while sorting out other problem. How can I restore all my photos , music etc back to my Mac Pro?(I am so scared, I haven't connected iPhone to sync! Please help)

It was tele tech. I couldn't open my Page Numbers etc. Frist tech chat idiot - following dumping few things in bin, asked me yo upgrade to Yosemite. But the problem still persists. This morning I was asked to do it via telephone and like yesterday, after wasting 20 min, I was put to this apparent Tech Queen ( my foot!). She eventually decided to reinstall  Yosemite asked me to connect my external drive while I connected to her. She was moving cursor asking me to move files and delete and I followed her like a dummy. It took 3/4 hours and she called me 3 times once the lengthy process was completed. I suspected from the beginng for the fact that why should be asking me to click all my backup from the very beginning! Eventually she said I deleted... Or someone else or may be my children ! It was a blatant lie. I run my small business from home and I was simply staying in front of the Mac whole day! Children were at school. Then she said I must have used another computer! I only have laptop and the iPad. I will talk to their manager first thing in the morning. In the mean time please let me know as to how can I transfer photos, music etc back to my laptop from my Iphone and IPad .? I am will connect to laptop as I am worried the new BLANK iPhoto may supersede iphone/iPad stuff? Will it? Please let me know. I am not a very tech savvy person. My son who could help me, is in Manchester Uni and Inam in London.

  • External drives will not mount if wi-fi is on

I was really unsure where to post this. If you think it should be in a different thread then let me know.
My problem is this. I have a Macbook that I use at home no problem. I teach at a college where there is a wi-fi connection that my Macbook automatically connects to. Recently, I have discovered that any external drives will not mount until I switch the wi-fi off. Additionally, almost everything I try and do causes the spinning beachball for 10 minutes or more at a time.
I have searched the net and cannot seem to find any reference to this problem anywhere else. Any ideas at all why this might be happening will be much appreciated.

It was not until Mac OS X 10.6.4, not possible to run on a 10.2 machine, that ExFat was supported.
Many older Macs also will not recognize GUID formatted partitions made to boot Intel Macs either.
10.2.3 is the first system to support Apple Partition Map HFS Extended (Jornalled).
There may be NTFS support based on my tip here:

  • External drives will not mount if the wi-fi is on!

I have had no replies where I had previously posted so I thought I would try here as I think that it is mainly an Airport problem.
My problem is this. I have a Macbook that I use at home no problem. I teach at a college where there is are two wi-fi connections that my Macbook automatically connects to depending on where I am in the department. Recently almost everything I try and do causes the spinning beachball for 10 minutes or much more at a time. Additionally, I have discovered that any external drives will not mount on my laptop, unless I switch the wi-fi off! No-one else is having any problems at all.
One of the wi-fi connections is an Airport Extreme. Each morning my laptop gets the message that there is a problem and I need to update the firmware to 7.5.2. (I originally set the Airport up through my laptop) I am very wary of doing this as everything is working fine for the other 20+ laptops in the department and I have read lots of reports of problems with this update.
I suppose my questions are these - 1 Does anyone have any idea what is going on with my laptop? 2 What should I try doing to solve this issue?

    Hello Robert,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • External drive won't mount after plugging in iPhone - MacBook 13'' (2,1)

    Hi Support Crew...
    I have a 13" MacBook(2,1) running OS X 10.6.2. This is a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo machine w/ 4 GB RAM & 320 GB hard drive.
Today, I had the Iomega drive plugged in via USB, along with my soundcard (MOTU 828mk2) plugged in via FW. This is a very normal setup for me which has been bug free since I bought this computer over 2 years ago. When I plugged in my iPhone 3G via USB I got an error message which comes up when you incorrectly remove a device. This was strange because I didn't unplug anything, I only plugged in the iPhone. The iPhone was playing music when I plugged it in and I had to unplug and plug is back in to get iTunes to recognize it.
Ever since this happened, my Iomega external drive won't mount. I am able to access it via Disk Utility (and ran the Verify Disk/Repair Disk - everything is "ok"), however I can't access the data on the drive. I really really need the data but of course can't access it to backup.

The fact that I got the "Improperly removed device" error when I plugged in the iPhone makes me think something weird is up and it's not actually the external drive. There is clicking/whining/noise, the drives powers up fine and is recognized by the system but the mount point is now "not mounted".
Does anyone have any idea how to fix? If you live in SF, I will buy you a beer.
