External drives will not reformat to Mac OS Extended

I just moved several external drives from a PC to a Mac permanently and want to reformat them to Mac OS Extended. However, when I attempt to do it, I receive an error message saying that the formatting was unsuccessful after the disk is already erased. I am able to reformat them to DOS on the mac and the drives do work for some functions, but I need them formatted to Mac OS Extended in order to back them up with Time Machine.
The drives are fairly new; one is a Western Digital "My Book" 1TB only a few months old; the other two are LaCie "Big" 650 GB drives about two years old. They work fine, except for this one problem.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You need to do the following:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • External HD will not Boot PPC Mac

I have a ppc mac running OS 10.5.8 and an external hard drive, formatted  with Apple Partition Map and containing a clone of the ppc mac. Using the firewire interface, this external drive will not boot the computer.
Any suggestions on troubleshooting this problem would be greatly appreciated.

A few drives don't support booting a Mac at all.

  • External Clone will not Boot PPC Mac

I have a ppc mac running OS 10.5.8 and an external hard drive, formatted  with APM and containing a clone of the ppc mac. Using the firewire interface, this external drive will not boot the computer. The external HD box is an OWC Mercury Elite Pro containing a 2 TB Seagate Barracuda HD with 2 partitions, one partition containing the clone.

Does it only happen using FireWire? Have you checked if the external disk has got an Apple Partition Map? Note that it's required to start a PowerPC-based Mac.
To check that your external disk is using Apple Partition Map, connect the external drive, open Disk Utility and choose the external disk in the sidebar. Then, look at the bottom of the window and see what says next to "Partition Map Scheme"

  • External drives will not mount if wi-fi is on

I was really unsure where to post this. If you think it should be in a different thread then let me know.
My problem is this. I have a Macbook that I use at home no problem. I teach at a college where there is a wi-fi connection that my Macbook automatically connects to. Recently, I have discovered that any external drives will not mount until I switch the wi-fi off. Additionally, almost everything I try and do causes the spinning beachball for 10 minutes or more at a time.
I have searched the net and cannot seem to find any reference to this problem anywhere else. Any ideas at all why this might be happening will be much appreciated.

It was not until Mac OS X 10.6.4, not possible to run on a 10.2 machine, that ExFat was supported.
Many older Macs also will not recognize GUID formatted partitions made to boot Intel Macs either.
10.2.3 is the first system to support Apple Partition Map HFS Extended (Jornalled).

  • External drives will not mount if the wi-fi is on!

I have had no replies where I had previously posted so I thought I would try here as I think that it is mainly an Airport problem.
My problem is this. I have a Macbook that I use at home no problem. I teach at a college where there is are two wi-fi connections that my Macbook automatically connects to depending on where I am in the department. Recently almost everything I try and do causes the spinning beachball for 10 minutes or much more at a time. Additionally, I have discovered that any external drives will not mount on my laptop, unless I switch the wi-fi off! No-one else is having any problems at all.
One of the wi-fi connections is an Airport Extreme. Each morning my laptop gets the message that there is a problem and I need to update the firmware to 7.5.2. (I originally set the Airport up through my laptop) I am very wary of doing this as everything is working fine for the other 20+ laptops in the department and I have read lots of reports of problems with this update.
I suppose my questions are these - 1 Does anyone have any idea what is going on with my laptop? 2 What should I try doing to solve this issue?

  • Hello. I keep my IPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Howtoresolve?

Hello. I keep my iPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and both check out when scanned with Disk Utility. Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Any ideas how to  resolve? Also, what's the maximum recommended size for an iPhoto library file? Thx!

Since you can't drag the library to the other EHD for the backup see if you can duplicate it (if you have enough room on the drive) by selecting it and typing Command+d (duplicate).
If you do rebuild the library without a backup and it goes awry you won't lose your photos but you may lose your orgnaizational efforts. So try the following:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library in the location of your choosing  based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE:  Fix 2 above might be the method you might want to try first with iPLM creating the new library on your second EHD. If it works that would get your backup copy on the second EHD at the same time as repairing it. If it does'nt work then go back to Fix 1.

  • External Drives will not mount

Hi guys ... this is my first post in these forums, so sorry if it is in the wrong category.
I have a Mac Pro, purchased in Feb this year. I have an iOmega Ultramax firewire drive, that is partitioned into four disks.
I have had time machine running well, and it backs everything up onto a second iOmega drive I have.
Yesterday, before I left for work, I saw TM was sbusy backing up. The finder was not responding but I just left it, as didnt have time to loko into it before leaving.
When I cam home last night, I saw it was still not responding, and TM was still trying to backup. All other apps were functioning fine.
I tried to force quit Finder and TM, but it did not work. I then shut down the Mac manually, and rebooted.
The problem has now arisen, where the partitioned drives will not mount at all. The TM backup drive is fine, and I can browse TM fine with it - so good to know all my data is backed up.
I looked at the logs in console, and see the messages saying that the drive cannot mount as it is dirty?
What I have tried as troubleshooting steps:
•Disk Utility to try and mount the drives, but they are not showing up
•Connecting the drive to my Mac Mini - still nothing.
•DiskWarrior - nothing. Only my TM backup drive and Mac HD show up.
•Running FSCK from Terminal. I can see the drives in /dev, but keep getting "Bad Super block" errors. When I try looking for another Super Block, it says nothing found, and would I like to run it manually? The same happens when run in single user mode.
•Unplugging the Mac and the drives from the Mac, waiting 5 mins, resetting the NVRAM and PRAM (booting up holding CMDPR and waiting for the second chime, shutting down, plugging in and turing n drives, rebooting ... nothing!
It seems as though I have exhausted all possible options.
I now accept that the drive is unrecoverable, and am relieved that the TM backups are OK. I am thus happy to format the drive and repartition it, then restore everything from TM. Will be a fairly big job, but at least the data is backed up.
The only problem I have, is I cannot even mount the drives to format them!
Is there any safe way of doing this over the command line. Or even better, has anybody gt any other advice as to options I can try?
I hope I have been thorough enough in my explanation here.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

The only problem I have, is I cannot even mount the drives to format them!
I have a feeling that the partition map is bad. Does the drive itself report to DU? If the drive does show up, you can select that, and click the Repair Disk button under the First Aid tab. If that doesn't fix it, with the drive selected, click the partition tab and re-partition the drive. After that, I would erase the newly created volumes with 1-pass/zero out option selected and restore the data that was on the external from TM.
If none of this works or if the drive itself (not the volumes) doesn't show up in DU, you either have a bad drive or bad controller in the external case. How old is the Ultramax? Just wondering if it might still be under manufacturer's warranty. I would check to see if you are still eligible from the manufacturer's warranty and get the whole external unit replaced. If you are out of warranty, I think it likely that you need to replace that external with a new one. I've had a drive go bad in an external case (this one I could still mount but the heads would 'freeze') and the controller on another external go bad (this one, the drive would not report to DU so I took the drive out of the enclosure, stuck the drive in another case and there was no problem with the drive.)

  • Firewire External Drives will not go to sleep

Since updating to Mavericks I have several issues. I will post each separetley.  The biggest issue is that the external drives will no longer go to sleep.
I want them to and have checked System Pref>Energy Saver and checked off "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" is in fact checked.
I did not have this issue with Moutain Lion.  I cannot roll back to a Mountain Lion installation because Mavericks updated my Aperture library files.
    Help?
FYI, I did eject the drives, and pulled the power, restarted the iMac, then plugged the drives back in and they remounted, but the problem still exists.

  • External drives will not mount on 10.2.3

whatever working drive i use (and i've tested a few), my old iMac (OS 10.2.3) will not mount anything external.
the drives work as evidence by the fact that they mount on my other Macs.
and the USB ports work (confirmed by testing the keyboard in each one).
yes, the Finder view preferences are set to show external drives.
to complicate matters, Disk Utility shows only the hardrive.
the issue is with 10.2.3 and i have no idea what's up.

It was not until Mac OS X 10.6.4, not possible to run on a 10.2 machine, that ExFat was supported.

  • Wav files on external drive will not work in Apple Loops

When I import wav files (from Nu Jazz Funk library) by dropping on the AL browser from an external drive, Apple Loops insists on copying them to my system drive (no option to make use current location). If I manually make an alias, the files show up, but play at the wrong tempo. I even tried letting AL make the copy, then moving that to an external drive & making an alias of that. No go. BTW, aif files work fine.

Yeah, that's because Apple Loops are .AIF files, not .WAV.

  • Time machine on external drive will not back up itunes media file on a separate external drive. Have already reformated itunes media drive, dragged itunes media backup file from time machine (old copy) and removed time machine plist and restarted.

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
    Any help for this??

  • External drive will not mount to desktop

Ok so i just bought a new hard drive and hooked everything up to my imac. However, it will not mount to my desktop.
    1. I opened disc utility and i can see that my newly purchased hard drive is listed on the LHS with 931 GB available.
    2. I click on the mount button on the top and i get this message- "The disk “disk1s1” could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting."
    3. So now i click on First Aid and attempt to repair disc, however I get this message-"Disk Utility stopped repairing “disk1s1” because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

how did that solve the issue? my 350gb seagate drive just started behaving the same way as your initial post -- it shows in Disk Utility but will not mount -- even after running disk repair/verify. This just started happening two days ago...

  • LaCie external drives will not sleep

Why are my three LaCie external drives not going to sleep with the new OS X Mavericks?
