External Drives Won't Display after OSX Install

The HD died on my mini so bought a new one and installed OSX 10.4.  The old HD still seems to work for data as I can see it and copy data using Macdrive on my PC.  Also, formatted an old USB Maxtor HD (HFS+) using Macdrive and copied over all the data from the old drive.  Now, when I connect either to my mini, neither will show up on the desktop (yes, preferences are set to show all drives on the desktop).  Disk Utility sees the old HD but not the Maxtor.  Since all my data is on either of those drives, how do I get at least one of them to show up?  Thanks.

Repairing Permission only deals with installer receipts and system components. Not with mounting or accessing hard drives.
Have your run Apple DU First Aid? Disk Warrior? Only use latest version for your OS.
Are you trying to clone your system to external and then repairing permissions? trying to boot from them?
If cloning, make sure the "Ignore Ownership" flag is unchecked before cloning (but do repair permissions on external drives you intend to boot from, such as a Firewire drive).
What type of cases and interface are these?

  • External drive won't mount after plugging in iPhone - MacBook 13'' (2,1)

    Hi Support Crew...
    I have a 13" MacBook(2,1) running OS X 10.6.2. This is a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo machine w/ 4 GB RAM & 320 GB hard drive.
Today, I had the Iomega drive plugged in via USB, along with my soundcard (MOTU 828mk2) plugged in via FW. This is a very normal setup for me which has been bug free since I bought this computer over 2 years ago. When I plugged in my iPhone 3G via USB I got an error message which comes up when you incorrectly remove a device. This was strange because I didn't unplug anything, I only plugged in the iPhone. The iPhone was playing music when I plugged it in and I had to unplug and plug is back in to get iTunes to recognize it.
Ever since this happened, my Iomega external drive won't mount. I am able to access it via Disk Utility (and ran the Verify Disk/Repair Disk - everything is "ok"), however I can't access the data on the drive. I really really need the data but of course can't access it to backup.

When I tried to run Migration Assistant, I just get the spinning search circle and none of the drives come up, just endless searching.
The fact that I got the "Improperly removed device" error when I plugged in the iPhone makes me think something weird is up and it's not actually the external drive. There is clicking/whining/noise, the drives powers up fine and is recognized by the system but the mount point is now "not mounted".
Does anyone have any idea how to fix? If you live in SF, I will buy you a beer.

  • External drive won't boot after install?

I tried installing mountain lion onto an external SSD drive. At first it worked, using my USB install drive and selected my external drive as the target. All the files are copied over and asked me to restart. However, after restart all it did is booted back into my internal drive OSX. Even if I held down the option button it won't allow me to boot the external drive. Any ideas? I'm doing this from the retina macbook pro.

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select the External drive, then select Install Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Help!  External drive won't connect after Yosemite 10.10.2 update

I ran the Yosemite 10.10.2 update on my 2013 MacBook Air today, and now I cannot connect to my external Western Digital hard drive.  At times, the drive won't connect or show up at all, but at other times, I get a warning that the computer cannot read or repair it.  Help!  It worked this morning and all of my photos are on there.  I know other people have had similar issues, but I haven't found anything resembling a solution.  (And yes, I have restarted everything, tried different cords, etc.)  Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thank you!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My external drive won't display in Finder. Any suggestions?

I have a 500gb Verbatim external drive that I can't see in Finder. I've tried to restart, but with no luck. Any suggetions?

If you go into applications>utilities>disk utilities is it displayed there?
I have notice maybe since switching to Lion that if I put in a thumb drive or an external HD that is not formated it wont just pop up on the desktop or finder but is available in disk utilities then a quick format and it shows up.
Not sure if this will help but you didnt mention if the drive was brand new or not so its all I could think of.
Good luck if I find anything else I will post it back here.

  • WD external drive won't mount after OS upgrade

After updating to latest Lion my WD 2T external drive wonlt mount. Actually it will mount momentarily and then disapear. I have loads of data on there (pictures, etc) that I do not want to lose.
There is a firmware update on the WD site that is supposed to address this issue, but it very clearly warns to back up your data before updating the firmware. If I can't mount my drive how can I back up my data?
Has anyone else had this problem and succesully fixed it?
    Thanks for any help!

I think I have fixed it (fingers crossed).
I unistalled my virus protection, turned time machine off, verified the disc and remounted it.
So far, so good. It has styed mounted for a coupel of hours so far and all the data seems to be there.

  • My Toshiba external hard drive won't mount after OSX Mavericks update. Please help.

Two days ago I updated to Mavericks 10.9.3 and prior to this, my Toshiba 1TB external hard drive worked perfectly well. Since the update, my hard drive will no longer mount. It shows up in Disk Utility but will not let me 'mount', 'verify disk' or 'repair disk' through Disk Utility. My sister has an identical Macbook Pro which she has not updated to Mavericks. I have tested my hard drive on her laptop and it works just fine. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Do I need to reformat my hard drive (and if so, will that clear everything on my hard drive?) or is there a simple fix?
Thank you for any assistance you can offer!

Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • MOVED: Powercolor HD 4650 won't display after drivers installed

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I downloaded that and tried it yesterday but it didn't help :-(
I noticed that a couple of other unrelated things stopped working after the last batch of Windows and Toshiba updates - for example, the Event Viewer snapin wouldn't load and the built-in .NET Framework 2.0 installation appeared to be corrupt until I ran sfc to repair it. I was getting pretty sick of the whole thing so I took the drastic step of nuking the C: drive and installing Vista Ultimate from my own retail DVD.
One hour later I have a working Vista Ultimate installation and, interestingly, I installed the Toshiba HD-DVD player and it now works!!!
It was a pretty drastic method to get it working - and not everyone is going to have a retail copy of Vista just lying around - but at the moment everything looks good. I still don't understand the original root cause (or which software update messed up Event Viewer/.NET Framework) but I guess it's kind of a solution...

  • External Drive Won't Mount After Power Failure

I was in the process of erasing a hard disk that was repeatedly not behaving correctly when the power went out last night. Now it won't mount at all, though another external disk I have daisy chained to it will mount. I have tried unplugging it (both the firewire cable and power) and it still won't mount. Any ideas? Thanks.

Actually, the opposite is true; you can't reformat a mounted volume. If the device isn't showing up in the left hand side of Disk Utility at all then you've probably got a hardware problem.

  • Pavilion dv6t new hard drive won't boot after OS install

Hello, I have a HP Pavilion dv6t-3000 and the hard drive went bad and I just ordered a new one with basically the same capabilities. BIOS recognizes it because I can run the hard disk test and because the HP Recovery disc's successfully load and install on the hard drive. But once the recovery disc's finish the install and restart I get the error "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". The only thing I can think of is the hard drive is not compatible or something needs to be configured in the BIOS, but it is still recognized and still gets Windows 7 Home Premium installed using the recover disc's so in my mind that eliminates that problem.
Is there something I am missing or something else that needs to be done?
    Thanks

  • External keypad won't work after installing OS 7.

External keypad won't work after installing OS 7. I have a "Zagg" keyboard that won't pair now to OS 7,...Why?

They do work. I have one and mine is working. Have you tried to reset your iPad? HOlding down teh sleep and home keys until it reboots then try pairing again.
A slightly more drastic thing is to go into the settings and reset all settings. THe downside, you will need to retweak your device but it can help fix keyboard glitches.

Can anyone explain why, after upgrade to Yosemite, Time Machine is no loger working? Backup on external drive stops few seconds after it has started. What can I do?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Try running a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it, a little bit of dust or dirt is all it takes to throw them out and it might just be co-incidental with the upgrade.
