External drives won't work since upgrading to Lion.

This is a really frustrating problem. I have two portable external hard drives that have both ceased to work ever since I upgraded to 10.7. These are both used for large video files and I need them to work as they have some important stuff on them.
One is a 1TB WD MyPassport, USB connection.
The other is a 500GB Seagate FreeAgent, FireWire 800 connection.
The drives are both giving me the same weird phenomenon:
I plug them in, and they'll boot up--sometimes right away, sometimes after several minutes--but then they make my Finder worthless. The files won't preview in Cover Flow, and expanding a folder takes forever. When I try opening a video file in QuickTime, I end up with the beach ball of death. I try restarting the computer, but I can't even do that because "Finder (Not Responding)."
So I tried manually shutting down by holding down the power button. When I restarted the computer with the drive attached, the Finder wouldn't launch. The dock would appear, but no icons on my desktop whatsoever. When I unplug the drive, once again hold down the power button to shut down, and restart without the drive attached, everything boots up just fine.
If anyone has experienced this, please help ...

Open Disk Utility, select the external disk in the sidebar and verify the disk. If there's an issue with them, repair the disks

Programs that rely on Java won't work since upgrade to Lion!!!

I opened a program yesterday after the I upgraded to Lion and a message box opened up stating that it would have to update Java for the program to work. The java update seemed to work but the program never opened. I tried to re open the program again and it appreared to start up and then it closed down. I restarted the computer but I got the same result. Any one know how to fix this?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Epson SX445W printer won't work since upgrading to mountain lion

I upgraded both my iMac and my Macbook to mountain Lion and ever since doing so the less than 6 months old Epson SX445W printer I have, which is supposed to be compatible with Mountain Lion won't print wirelessly anymore.
I've hunted high and low for new drivers, tried removing and re-installing the printer, switched off gatekeeper, all to no avail, the only way I can get it to work is to print via USB.
The Printer network settings show it is correctly linked to the wireless network.
I've tried adding the printer via IP, when I put the printers IP in, the imac detects the printer and asks me if I wish to use the Epson Stylus SX440 (which I select as it is this driver I previously used before mountain lion) and it the tries to install, tries to download new software and then fails, with the error message
'Can't install the software fo the Epson Stylus SX440 because it is not currently available form the Software Update Server.'
I am at a loss as to how to progress, I'm starting to feel the upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion was pointless, I must admit I was perfectly happy with Lion anyway as it always worked flawlessly for me.

SInce posting this I did try removing and adding again, I have managed to get it to print by using the IP again to add and entering the ip address and then instead of using the default SX440 driver off my machine I selected from the list on the dropdown and chose Series 440, this successfully added the printer, and it just printed a test page, however I'm a little worried that this won't persist as soon as the printer is switched off and a new IP address is assigned by the DHCP server, and I shouldnt need to have to keep re-adding it, any other ideas are most welcome

Time Machine backup on external drive no longer working after upgrade to Yosemite

Can anyone explain why, after upgrade to Yosemite, Time Machine is no loger working? Backup on external drive stops few seconds after it has started. What can I do?

Try running a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it, a little bit of dust or dirt is all it takes to throw them out and it might just be co-incidental with the upgrade.

Quicktime broadcaster won't work since upgrade to Tiger!

this is probably the worst experience i've had trying to get support from Apple. nothing remotely resembling my problem is anywhere in the knowledge base. here's the deal...
i used broadcaster every week prior to upgrade without any problems...NOW...i am unable to "enable video stream" since upgrading to Tiger. All I can broadcast is audio.
I EVEN have AppleCare support for my computer but Apple still won't help me!!!! I spent all day on this and need it to work TOMORROW MORNING! didn't expect any problems since it worked fine before.

Okay....after a few more hours I decided to reinstall Quicktime Player and then re-enter my quicktime Pro registration key. Now it works. I'm still disappointed that Apple wouldn't help me with this though. Not the service I'm used to.
So...quicktime broadcaster users be advised of this need to reinstall quicktime after upgrading to Tiger. It wasn't just my g5 that was affected...I checked it out on my g4 powerbook and also had the same problem.

Optical Drive has stopped working since upgrading to ATI 9800

Due to hardware failure of my ATI Radeon 9600 I decided to upgrade to the 9800, which requires (in G5's) a four pin split power supply to be connected to the optical drive.
I have turned my computer on and successfully receive signal out to my monitors, but thus discovered I can't eject the disk tray!
I opened up the computer again and all the connection seem fine.....
Is anyone familiar with installing the 9800?

I am going to restore the system with the other video card and try to get things back to normal, but I did a few more troubleshoots.
The optical drive seems to be functioning. I started up my computer with the side panel opened and I moved the drive a few inches out in order to press the manual eject button. I was able to open the drive bay and close it by pressing the eject button on my keyboard. (That is the first time the keyboard worked.)
I closed the drive bay with an installer CD in it but the CD wouldn't read. I restarted holding the C key down to try and boot off the CD drive- nothing. So I guess the drive isn't working....but yet it seems to be powered????
Do you think this is really only a bad cable? When installing the new Video Card I had a very hard time detaching the 4 pin power supply from the optical drive. Could I have damaged something?
It wouldn't surprise me if now my optical drive was broken. I have had to replace everything on my computer since it reached three years old.

Performance slowing down when ripping cd's..external drive won't work

2 problems I need help with. Itunes was ripping my cd's to wav format anywhere from 20-40x from my internal cd/dvd player/burner. Now it's only doing it around 12x. I cleaned up space and defraged the hard drive, but that didn't help. I also upgraded to the latest version of itunes (which took me 2 days to fix..that's another discussion completely). Still didn't help. I then tried using the external player cd/dvd player/burner. The cd is recognized by itunes, but will not rip the file. It goes through the files very quickly and leaves filenames on my hard drive, but the files are empty.
So what's killing the speed on my internal drive and how come I can't rip from the external drive?

You'd have to rule out the possibilities. By connecting the drive to another Mac using the same cable, it seems like you have ruled out the drive itself and the cable.
The two remaining possibilities I can think of are the iMac's FireWire 400 port being faulty and a software-related cause.
To rule out the software cause, you can try starting up from your Mac OS X installation disc; insert disc and restart with the C key held down. When you get to Installer's first screen, go up to the menu bar. Under Utilities, select to run Disk Utility. Connect the external drive. Does it appear in the Disk Utility sidebar properly, as a drive with a volume indented below? If it does, there may be some problem with your currently installed system that is causing this problem. If it does not, then it becomes more likely that there is some hardware-related problem with the iMac's FireWire port.
Note: When you did the "unplugging everything for half an hour," you should use the reset SMC procedure instead. Try following this procedure precisely.

When you do this, you should disconnect ALL cables. If you have been using a power strip, connect the power cord directly to a wall power outlet for this test. Power it up with nothing connected, except for the power cord. Then, add only your keyboard/mouse. Connect the external drive. Is there any difference?
Also consider how the external drive is connected to power. Is it connected to power differently when it works on the MacBook? Were you using a crowded power strip that also has the iMac's power cord? As with the iMac itself, if you have been using a power strip, try connecting the hard drive's power cord directly to a wall power outlet for this test.

The #1 culprit for that is Norton security software.

WD External Drive Won't work with Time Machine or anything else

I am really hoping someone can help me. I have been using Time Machine to backup my hard drive on my Macbook and using a WD drive. Everything worked until right before Christmas. Something happened and I don't know what and I am not sure the last backup worked. I can no longer see the external drive in the finder, but I can see it in Disk Utility and it shows up in About this Mac. When I've had the drive connected today, the disk is turning and the status light is flashing. I can see data being written in the activity monitor which makes me think something is happening with the drive. In Disk Utility, I can eject the drive, but can't select it to do any first aid or other activities. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have an external drive that I have set up as my time machine but now the external drive is not recognized on any PC and I've tried several. How do I get the external drive to work on my mac and a PC?

If it's formatted for Mac then you can't use it on a PC without 3rd party software. If you format it for PC, then you can't use it TimeMachine.

Drag and Drop from inside iTunes to external drive won't work

Hello all, I have a huge library of nearly 6000 cds on my computer, all in itunes. I have lots backed up on DL dvds, but i bought a 1tb drive to back up the rest. So i am selectively dragging and dropping the songs in big chunks to a backup folder i have made on my external drive but it just does not work!
It works some of the time, but if it has a problem with even one of the songs it does not copy any of them, so i have to go thru and manually drag each cd until i find the one that it refuses to copy (which it refuses to copy for no descernable reason) and this will take forever with 5600 cds. any suggestions as to why it is doing this??

That is a good suggestion, and it would be simpler, but the problem is, I ahve over 1tb of music and movies combined, but i want them all backed up, so some of my music is backed up to data-dvd's and the rest needs to be selectively moved to the harddrive...is it because some of the song titles may be the same name? folders may not allow that?

Time Machine has not worked since upgrade to Lion

I've noticed that my Mac Mini's Time Machine will no longer perform a backup - I keep receiving a "could not create the backup folder" error message. This problem only started after I upgraded my Mac Mini (2010 Model) to Lion, Time Machine had worked perfectly when I use to use Snow Leopard. I have both formatted and partitioned my Time Machine drives (the first drive was a Seagate Barracuda 7,200 RPM 1TB drive, the 2nd drive is a 2TB Porsche Drive I bought at my local Apple Store). Both drives, when I was partitioning them, were set to use the GUID Partition Scheme. The Seagate Drive is an Internal Hard Drive that is sitting in a ThermalTake 2-Bay Drive Dock which is connected by a USB Cord, the Porsche drive is an External Drive that is connected via a USB cord. I have also tried unmounting/remounting each drive, deleting the Time Machine "plist" file from my Library folder and restarting, and finally re-installing Lion from the recovery drive I made using the instructions on support.apple.com. Unfortunately, nothing I've done so far has solved the issue.
I checked my Console log for Time Machine and this is what I found:
