External DVD burner for backup purposes

I feel more secure knowing that I have several different forms of backups. I'm looking at a Lacie D2 DVD +/- Desktop DVD & CD burner with LightScribe, USB & firewire interface, for Windows and Mac. I have an Epson printer with VD printing capabilities so I'm not interested in the LightScribe features. Is this a good reliable burner or can someone recommend another model, preferably Lacie.

I have an older version of this burner and it's been great for quite a few years. In fact, I seldom use my internal burner because I prefer the LaCie.

You will find internal optical drivers from OWC here. You will find external DVD burners from OWC here.
For the external drives, almost any Firewire burner will be supported by your PowerBook. Here are a few. You can further refine the filters.
    Good luck.

  • External DVD burner for G4

    Hi,
I was wondering if there are any external dvd burners for a G4 with a USB port that is under 2.0. Also, it's a 400 firewire. Thanks in advance.

    Hi
If you're Mac profile is accurate, you will have problems with any new drive: OS9.1 will not natively support any new drive, and will not allow you to burn DVD's at all without third party software, such as Toast 5.2.3 (last version that can burn to DVD-/+R (no DL media), and run in OS9)
All USB2.0 drives are backwards compatable w/USB1.01, BUT USB1.01 will not support DVD burns, as it cannot run faster than 4X CD-R (way too slow to burn a DVD (1X DVD = 9X CD)).
You will want to go with a FireWire-based drive, if you go external, as WWJD pointed out.

Howdy! Welcome to the Apple Discussion Boards!
I have a good opinion of LaCie burners. I have had one for over two years now with nary a problem. I used it with a PB G4 12 inch model. It comes bundled with Toast Titanium, which is really good burning software, IMO.
As far as system specs, check out LaCie's website, but I think anything above 10.2 would be supported.

  • Can i use mac mini as external dvd burner for my ibook?

i was wondering if i could hook up my dad's mac mini to my ibook in target disk mode to my ibook and if that would allow me to use his mac mini as an external dvd burner. if anyone knows if this would work or how to do it, let me know, thanks

Yes and no. You cannot connect the mini to your notebook and use its drive as if it were an external drive. But you can transfer data from your notebook to the mini and then burn the DVD. And, if you can set up a VNC (that's what Leopard screen sharing is) you could even control the mini from your notebook. Not as transparent a process as having an external burner. And, considering the low prices these days, if you really need to burn DVDs rather frequently, buying an inexpensive DVD burner is going to be more convenient.

  • Best External dvd burner for dual layer disks?

    Hi everyone,
At some point my internal dvd burner in my mac book pro died, and apple replaced it. After that, I couldn't burn a dual layer disk. They've changed it twice more to accomodate me (the genius bar is awesome), but I still only have mediocre results. No problem burning regular dvds or cds. So I wondered is there a REALLy good external burner for DVD-DL that you have experience with? Thanks!

A good bootable multi-interface enclosure (empty) for an external CD/DVD drive will run about US$70.

They also sell SATA drives pre-installed in that same enclosure.
Many users find installing an internal drive themselves no more difficult than doing a memory upgrade themselves.
Others prefer not to work inside their computer.
Based on your graphics card and the original drive, I expect your Mac Pro is an older model. All before 2009 accept an ATA INTERNAL drive such as this:

The internal DVD/CD burner died in my MAC Pro -
    PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-111D
it wasn't ever reliable so I want to replace it with an external drive so when that one dies I don't have to take my computer to the Apple store to get it replaced & the worst part being without my computer for 3-4 days.
Any suggestions on a good reliable DVD burner are greatly appreciated.

  • Need an External DVD Burner for eMac

I bought an eMac about 3 years ago for personal use. I didn't get the Superdrive at the time and now wish I had! I want to burn DVD's of my kids to give to the Grandparent's etc. They wouldn't be complicated, just photos, videos and some music. I also want to archive home videos.
The Apple store recommended the LaCie d2 DVD+/-RW Drive with LightScribe 16x and Toast 7 Titanium. But the reviews I've found about it have not been so great.
Has anyone used that burner, or can you give me a good recommendation for the easiest way to equip my eMac to burn DVDs. I don't want to spend a fortune or end up with a total headache! Thank you!!

i have a LaCie D2 dvd-r/rw ( older model, only 4x/2x i believe ), but my wife has been using it fine with iDVD... i don't think it required her to use Popcorn (or Toast) when burning.
i know of others needing to use other apps as a workaround, but mine was fine... and as always, if you're sticking with macs, i'd recommend using firewire over usb any day... never had reliable results with any usb 2 periphs with any regularity... might just be my luck, but i'd put my money on a good firewire burner, and can't say i've ever had any issues LaCie as well...

  • How to transfer Itunes Library (PC) to external hard drive for backup purposes?

I need to save my Itunes library from my current PC to an external hard drive just in case my computer were to crash/die.  Two questions:
Question #1:  How do I do this?
Question #2: Should my computer crash and I need to get a new PC, how would I transfer my Itunes library from the external hard drive to the new PC?

  • External DVD Burner

I'd like to get an external dvd burner for my iBook. I'd like to be able to use it with iDVD. Is firewire better than USB? USB would make it compatible with our pc.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a burner and other software I might need to burn dvds?
    Thanks.
    ibook 12   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   20g iPod, 5G iPod mini

You should be able to create a disk image of the dvd from within iDVD, and you can then burn this to disk using Toast

Congratulations on the new Mini. Are you saying you tried burning and it does not play, or do you want to burn it only for the computer to be able to play it?
OS X Mountain Lion: Burn a CD or DVD may help.

  • Looking for a external blu ray dvd burner for my mac

looking for a external blu ray dvd burner for my mac

There are plenty of options but I have found that the LaCie d2 http://blu-ray.burnworld.com/burners/lacie-d2.htm works more consistantly. I use Toast 11 mainly for Blu-Ray. The drive does come with a basic verison of the software which is good for most but you need to upgrade to do some serious authoring.

  • Buying an external DVD burner, what to look for?

Hi, I am buying an external DVD burner in the morning, anything I should look for feature wise, any models which are recommended?
    Cheers, S.

Patrica, we'll forgive you this once! For future reference at the top of each Discussions Forum section there's a blue "Post a New Topic" link - that's where you start. Anyway as to your problem as to what to do now. You can ignore the "Easy Media Creator" disc - this is an application for Windows machines.
All you need now is a blank DVD to record onto. Usually LaCie include a complimentary DVD-R disc - didn't you get one?
It's useful because it will give you a good idea as to which brand of disc works best with your burner. My LaCie likes Maxell and Verbatim but not TDK even though it's on LaCies's approved list (which you can find on their website). Buy a small pack until you are sure they work OK. Whether you get DVD-R or DVD+R is up to you, but the minus format tends to work better with domestic DVD players.
I don't know what you want to burn onto DVD - is it files or movies? If it's the former you have all the software you need in Disk Utility. As far as I know iDVD on the other hand doesn't work with an external burner (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!) you need to buy something like Toast for that. I notice also that you're in the PowerBook forum although you have an iMac! Does this not have an internal DVD writer? I thought all versions of the G5 had a SuperDrive? My final bit of advice to you would be to get yourself whichever of these http://www.missingmanuals.com/ you feel you might need. Certainly the 10.3 book will help you enormously. Good luck.

  • Adobe Elements catalog backup fails after 3 discs.  Message says something wrong with dvd writer.  I bought an external dvd burner and changed disc brands, still the same results.

Full backup of catalog stops after three discs.  I have changed disc brand and added a new external dvd burner but still get the same results.  What is wrong?

If you have the hard drive space, see if you can complete a back up to the hard drive instead. If that works successfully, it could be a buffer or caching issue with the burner. It could be running out of space because it is not clearing after each disk burn.

  • Recommendations for External DVD Burner compatible with 10.5 Leopard?

We still have an older MacBook that we bought in 2007, it works great except for the CD/DVD drive. I need to be able to burn DVD's, could anyone recommend an External DVD Burner that would be compatible with 10.5 Leopard? Or at least give me an idea of what I need to look for to know if it should work before I buy it? Thank you!
