External DVD burner to burn iDVD projects

I purchased an iMac about six months ago to replace an older Mac that I've had for about 10 years. I made the mistake of not getting a Super Drive when I made the purchase. I have spent some time learning about and creating iDVD projects but, of course, can only play them on my iMac and am unable to burn them to a DVD disk. Can I purchase an external DVD burner that will allow me burn my iDVD projects and, if so, can anyone suggest a reliable product?
Thanks.

Use an ext. Lacie FW Burner or make your own like i did from a pioneer 110D and a standard FW400 enclosure. Pioneer 111 and 112 will also work. Nice thing about making you own is that it requires no additional FW drivers.

  • Mp4 video isn't burning in my idvd project

I've been trying to burn a mp4 vid into my idvd project, which is fine.  But after I begin to burn the finished product, "along with the slideshow which loads up just fine" the whole process comes to a stop when iDVD  get to loading video part it.  the video's codec is H.264, AAC
I'm not sure where to go with this, I've tried to change the format of the video useing other apple products but I only get audio when I change the mp4 to a different format.  Any idea's what I should do about this?

    Hi
    Me Wildly Guessing !
As I get it .mp4 - is no codec but a container. So it can be near anything.
    H.264, AAC - are codecs/specific file formats
I would try just to change the post-fix .mp4 to eg .mov or .m4v - I think I've seen such an approach that  did work.

  • Formatted iDVD project complete with Themes, etc...burning through Toast?

I need to use Toast to burn my completed iDVD project. Worked a looong time making it perfect with formatting using Themes, custom Text pages, etc... I'd hate to lose all that, but need to use Toast to compress the video to fit a Single Layer DVD. Does Toast preserve the iDVD formatting or not? Can iDVD finalize a project with Toast burning in mind? Help?

If I'm not mistaken, you can create a disc image to the desktop from the file menu in iDvd. Then burn said image in Toast while selecting the fit to dvd option.
But you may be restricted to selecting one of Toast's basic themes.

  • Compare DVD-R burn quality by internal Super Drive to External DVD-R burner

Has anyone compared the video 'quality' of a DVD-R burned using the internal Super Drive
on my MacBook Pro (Windows 8.1 64 bit) to the same DVD-R burned using a standalone
Sony DVD-R Recorder / player?  One would think the quality would be slightly better using
a standard external DVD-R disc burner.

I see no difference in the video quality.  Although I use a different external burner than your brand.  It's possible some external burners are better than the optical drives on a MacBook Pro or vice versa.

  • How do I move an iDVD project to external

I recently upgraded to iDVD '08 and see that now, one of the output selections is iDVD, meaning it goes straight to that. When this is selected, it automatically begins creating the file as opposed to asking where you'd like to store it. It ended up in my documents on my HD. I figured no worry, I'd just move it over to my ext HD since it was over 2GB. But when I did this and tried to open it, it said 2 files were missing. So, couple of questions. First, I remember with the last that you just output a file that you then, yourself, dragged into iDVD. This seemed very easy. But with this way, it seems to automate it. How can I output so that is does it the old way, where it generates a file that I can place in iDVD myself, and that I can store on an external. Second, if that's not possible, what files do I need to locate to move to the ext, where do they hide, and where should I store them?
Why do they make what was perfectly easy, hard?

If I understand you correctly, you are actually asking two different questions.
    1. Do you mean that with iMovie 08, when you select to 'share' your movie to iDVD that iDVD opens a new project automatically?
You do not have to use the output options in iMovie. Just close your iMovie and open iDVD yourself, choose to create a new project, select a theme, then go to the Media tab, then 'Movies,' locate your iMovie and drag it onto iDVD's main screen. Be careful not to drop it into a menu Drop Zone.
    2. You also would like to have your iDVD project saved to a different location than the default 'Documents' file. When you open iDVD and create a new project, you will see a dropdown box showing Documents as the save location. You can change that right from that drop box.
However, it is recommended that you save your project on your computer's drive, not an external drive. The iDVD application itself must run from your computer. Some users have successfully created and burned projects located on other drives, but many have run into problems.
You can certainly save your completed iDVD projects to an external drive by doing a 'save as disk image' from within the iDVD project. This will look like the burn process, and take just as long for the encoding, but the end result is a disk image file, not a burned DVD disk. The disk image file is a self-contained file that is an exact replica of your iDVD project. It can be moved without losing the ability to burn DVD disks from it in the future.
Remember that an iDVD project itself should be thought of as a container that has references to media files used in it, but it does not actually CONTAIN the media files. When a DVD is burned from an iDVD project, iDVD locates the needed media and copies it for the burn, doing this for each disk burned. Sometimes there are burn 'glitches' where the first DVD disk burns fine, but others may not. Also with an iDVD project, if you rename, move, change or delete any of the files used in the project, iDVD will be unable to locate them and will not be able to open properly. With a saved disk image file, you can safely delete the original iDVD project and the original iMovie, thus saving drive space.
Burning DVD disks form a disk image file using Disk Utility or Toast is a better way to burn DVD disks since the files are all encoded in the disk image file and do not have to be copied in each time.
Please post back if any of this is not clear, or does not answer what you need to know.

  • HT1645 I am trying to burn an imovie I made. I keep getting the message multiplex error. The imovie will not burn to a idvd.

I am trying to burn an imovie to a DVD. I keep getting the message multiplex error. I do not know what to do. Please, can anyone help me.

    Hi
Multiplexing error is a very complex problem due to many things (long long list following) - one common but not obvious reason is that material on the iDVD menu goes outside the TV-Safe area (or just touching it).
So first - turn on TV-Safe area and move any object well inside of this.
Wide screen stretched - usually (as I think) it is due to making a 4x3 movie in a 16x9 wide-screen project OR the other way around. This forces one to on flat-screen TV (or other) set the presenting view right - My has 4x3, wide-screen, zoom and auto-wide-screen and I have to switch this by my remote for some DVD I've made "wrong" way.
Now my long long list on Multiplex Error

    A.    Using strange letters in video project name e.g. +,/; etc. keep to a-z and 0-9 strange letters in project name e.g. +
as described by Donnyboy69.  Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.
    B.    Location of Chapters
    • Can’t be at start or end of movie (Skip first/start one - iDVD sets this by it self. At the End - no need)

Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.
    2. Disconnect any other external devices not absolutely needed.
e.g. external USB/USB2 hard disks, other FW hard disks etc.

FROM Bev. (Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.
    One user more writes
To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
    The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
    This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.
    Russ One - suggest this
Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
    Summary - What to try
    1. Chapters
    • Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
    • No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
    • No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
    2. TV-safe area for buttons (no one outside this)
    3. Safe re-boot
    4. No other external devices connected - that are not needed
    SDMacuser adds to this
    • On #4 ... No ext. devices. Some think this applies mainly to ext. FW. Not the case. Also applies to ext. USB2 as well (not to mention flash drives too).
Do not leave 3rd party devices / camera / camcorder plugged in unless it is being used with iDvd's One Step process. Certain web cams can trigger this also (especially ones with added features like LED light/s that draw additional power from the FW or USB bus).
    5. Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up hard disk
    6. Make a DiskImage first - reduces where problem originates
    7. Trash iDVD pref. file
    8. Make a new iDVD project
    9. Movies in project with same aspect ratio e.g. 4x3 or 16x9
    10. No other programs/applications running during iDVD process. e.g. Internet, screen & energy savers

  • External DVD Burners ?

My first post so please be patient!!! I have an Imac with ComboDrive and am looking to buy an external DVD drive to burn a couple of projects I'm working on in IMovie. Could anyone please offer any recommendations ? Also will I still be able to burn from IDVD using an external DVD writer or is there a way to upgrade my existing drive to Super drive ? Probably silly questions but I'm new at this!!!
    Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You can upgrade to a Superdrive, but simply adding an external drive is much easier, and probably less expensive (no labor). You also don't have to be without the computer till 'they get to it' and you avoid the worry of packing up & transporting the computer.
Garyjr is right, there are many drives that will do fine with the iMac; I got the LaCie d2 for actually a bit less than the cost of an internal Superdrive (without even counting labor), and have been happy with it.
The only really silly question is the one not asked which would have saved unnecessary trouble/expense/unhappiness, just for the asking!

  • External dvd options

is anybody using an external dvd dual layer burner with a mac mini with success and if so which one?? my superdrive has gone from system profile etc and i've been quoted £200 for a new logic board. everything else is fine i just can't burn or import anything, a new external can be had for £50ish but are they compatible?? help required. it would also be handy if the external burner was compatible with my ibook g3 dual usb 700mhz though not essential.

HI there - I'm gonna buy one of these too, for my G4 powerbook so I can put our home Digi Cam footage onto a decent size dvd 8gig .... but was wondering is the burner compatible with iMovie/iDvd??
Hope you can shed some light on this - as apple used to say you had to have a superdrive for it to work, but I make a dmg file which i can then burn at work on a single layer, albeit a superdrive

I have an external LaCie FireWire DVD-RW

  • Ccan't play my iDVD project on a TV

So I've burned both an iDVD project and also as an alternative created a VICEO_TS version that I burned to a DVD-RW - however in both cases the DVD's play when inserted into a PC or a MAC, but I keep getting an Insert Disc error when I load these into the DVD player attached to my TV's (I've tried two DVD players now and both have trouble recognising the disc).
Any help would be appreciated, as I've got creating the projects down to a fine art, but want to now burn them to DVD's suitable for a TV.
    Thanks

I used the standard mac tools (I'm running os 10.x) to burn the Video_TS to the DVD - I have a small suspicion after your reply that it may be the fact I am using DVD_RW media and the DVD players for my TV are both quite old and probably don't support that format.
The format is coming up as MAC OS Extended, so I guess it might be the burn tool on the standard finder side bar that is creating aMAC format by default.
Apologies if all this sounds a little dumb, I've been a PC user for 20+ years and only a MAC user for 1 year - and whilst I love the MAC more than the PC now I struggle with some things still.
    Thanks

  • IDVD project to toast

Is their anyway to burn a complete iDVD project in Toast?

Less errors? That's great, because while I was using iDVD, I got a lot of errors... so I bought Toast 10 lately.
What do you think makes more sense: To let iDVD to do encoding (and one can have a nice menu..not like the ones in Toast), or distrust iDVD all together, and to do the encoding and burning in Toast alone to avoid the iDVD's potential errors? - this is 1st question,
The 2nd: since I'm still inexperience with using Toast to burn DVDs, so I do not have a "feel" yet for the burning quality settings... and looking for the best burning settings for 2hrs of Standard Definition DV home movie (in full quality Quick Time DV file).
I noticed that the material burned using "Automatic" settings is looking less desirably than while using manual with higher "MAXIMUM" and higher "AVERAGE" values, like 8 or 9, but then I also learned that setting those too high may cause the reading errors in people's DVD players.
Thus the question for you - experienced Toast's burners:
    - at what maximum value should one set the"MAXIMUM" and the"AVERAGE" values for 1-hr and/or (if different) 2-hrs of the Standard Definition material, so it will fit on just one regular single layer DVD, and will look possibly the best, with an error-free playback on people's DVD players?
(I will set the audio at compressed 320 kbps in order to gain some extra room for the video's quality... but at what settings?)
Please help, if your burning and then playing back experiences are positive, or PLEASE - let me know about some pitfalls that I might be not aware of. Thank you.

  • AVCHD to iMovie EXPORT as QT File to iDVD Project

Hello all. Has anyone imported an SVCHD footage, edited it in iMovie, then export it into a QuickTime file, bring it into an iDVD project, and burned it into a DVD? What was the result? Good or poor quality when viewed on a big 1080p display?
It seems like that is my next move using what came with my Mac. -And I just wanted to know if anyone has done this already, to see if it'll be a waste of my time. Thanks!

Yeah... If everybody had all those things. I'm trying to make do with what I have to share with those folks that don't have a high speed Internet connection or all those things you'd mentioned.
I have to admit. I've burned some miniDV video footage and it looks good on a big screen, better than analog. Granted it's not HD, but it's better than analog.
Once again, making do with what I have... I have an AVCHD camcorder. And it's crap when burning through an iDVD project because it does not support that kind of quality. So my thought was to export it from iMovie as a QT file, bring it to iDVD and burn it to see if I can at least get it as good as DVD quality. Has anyone out there done this?

  • External DVD DL burners

I want an external DVD DL WR burner.
    1. I am wondering if I can get one of these to be recognized by Tiger (to burn in iTunes, iDVD, etc).
    2. Should I get a +DL or -DL burner, for most DVD players that one has for their home systems?

    4. What format (+/-) are standard movie rental DVD's?

    1. I am wondering if I can get one of these to be recognized by Tiger (to burn in iTunes, iDVD, etc).
    Yes.
    2. Should I get a +DL or -DL burner, for most DVD players that one has for their home systems?
Most DVD Players have support for neither dual-layer support though that is changing. The original DVD-R is the only true universal standard.
    3. Which format (+/-) does the Superdrive read?
The original superdrive only did DVD-R, CD-R. Later models added did DVD-RW, CD-RW, and even later ones added the + and dual layer format. Use your System Profiler in Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info in Mac OS X to determine your Disc Burning support in the Hardware section to find out what formats are supported on your Superdrive if you have one.
    4. What format (+/-) are standard movie rental DVD's?
Most are a special kind of dual-layer that can only be gotten in a commercial quality, but are also playable in players that only support DVD-R for consumer grade media.
    5. Is there a unit that burns + AND - ?
Current Superdrives do, and have for about a year on some models.
    6. Best place to buy DL disks?
I've found two places are good for buying media:
    http://www.meritline.com/ and
    http://accaproducts.com/
Media reliability of dual-layer is not necessarily as great as just straight DVD-R. Straight DVD-R also comes in a double-sided (not double-layer), which offers more storage capacity than plain DVD+/-DL on a single disk, though you have to flip the disk, and there is no label space on it except on the ring. There is though substantial circumstantial evidence that labeling and/or writing on disks can damage their ability to be read and possibily create issues of balance on certain drives.
For more on the quality of media, and what drives support which type of media, see http://www.videohelp.com/dvd/
Several good general purpose external Firewire burners that support all formats on the Mac with all of Apple's burning software are available from http://www.macsales.com/
Other burners may also work, though may need a firmware update and http://www.patchburn.de/ to work with iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, iTunes, and the Finder. http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ has an extensive database where you can search drive compatibility.

  • Need External DVD Player that Works on Mac

My G4 fell (ouch) and the right corner bent and the DVD player doesn't work anymore. At Best Buy I bought a LG DVD player and burner, but my G4 wouldn't recognize it. Then I bought a Pioneer DVD player and burner, but it wouldn't recognize that either (this one has a place to plug in a cord to power it from the wall, but it didn't help).
Does anyone know of an external DVD player and burner that will work with a Mac G4? They seem to all be well under $100, a lot cheaper than having a Mac repair person open up my G4 and try to fix the internal player and also replace the shell.
BTW, I guess I could get by without a burner, so if you know of just a player that would work with my G4, I would consider it. Also the LG player says on the box it works with Mac, but then I noticed it needs OS X 10.5 . I suppose it costs over $100 to upgrade, so I don't think it's worth it.

All PowerBooks starting the G3 "Pismo" dating to Feb 2000 have Firewire Ports. On the 17" G4, the FireWire 400 port is the only labeled "2" in this image of the right edge of the computer:

iDVD does not care about file size (it compresses a movie file by about 4:1 o the standard mpeg2 format), only about length.

Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced two-pass technology to encode your video (The first pass determines which parts of the movie can be given greater compresson without quality loss and which parts can’t.  The second pass then encodes those different parts accordingly) , resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about the time taken.
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.
