External DVD burner woes - Firewire and USB Lindy enclosure

I recently purchased a Lindy 42937 USB/eSATA/FW400 enclosure which houses an Optiarc AD-6240S DVD burner. This was a replacement for an earlier IcyBox enclosure which had a Prolific FW chipset - known for having problems with OSX Snow Leopard. The Lindy box uses the Oxford chipset which is supposed to be more reliable.
Initially all went fine but over the last couple of months I have a failure rate burning CDs or DVDs (using Toast 10 and Verbatim discs) of 50%. I get unstable connection or disk error-type messages and the disc burn fails part of the way through the burn. I can always burn reliably using the inbuilt Matshita drive - it's just slower, noisier (and region-locked which the external drive isn't).
I put this down to similar FW issues I was having previously and switched to the USB connection. This too fails much of the time. The drive also disappears after the iMac wakes from sleep - turning it off and on re-registers it most of the time but it's a real pain when you've set up Toast and a burn project and can't simply restart where you left off the previous night.
It's not the drive itself as this works absolutely fine in a PC internally and externally. It's not the iMac or Toast as it works fine with the internal burner. This leaves only the Lindy enclosure which was an expensive and supposedly top-quality one or something in SL continuing to hamper external drives, esp FW.
I've repaired my HDD and file permissions and have all latest patches and Toast updates. All I want to do is burn discs consistently and reliably. It's not too much to ask!

So - now cleared PRAM and double checked using FW and USB connections. I've noticed that the drive ceases to be recognized in Toast if I have a blank disc in there, CD or DVD. A switch off and off of the drive usually gets it re-recognized in Toast. I had two DVD-RAM discs containing a number of utilities I use. These are now apparently blank (or unreadable) and if I load them into the drive, it immediately ceases to be recognized on the Mac.

It doesn't have to be a small drive. I picked that particular drive because it was the only drive I could find with Apple listed under supported OS.

It looks like that copy is only in the UK. Perhaps there is a US version?

Internal and external DVD burner ?

Hi all, have a general question, currently have a HP ProBook 6455b, obviously has an internal DVD burner.. I am looking to add an external DVD burner...is this possible to run an internal and external at the same time? would I need additional burning software? Burning is quite slow takes over an hr to burn one DVD, currently using Windows DVD burner because it is simple and effective.. or should I just use another program that is quicker? any ideas or suggestions on fast burning programs? thanks you guys are the best!

I have never burned a movie with mine but I have burned large 3+ GB ISO images using CD Burner XP, and it takes just a few minutes.
Now, if you mean can you insert a disk in one drive, and copy that disk via the other drive using the same program set to copy or grab disk, that should be possible.
It should show one drive as the one to copy from and one to copy to, just like if you had two DVD drives in a desktop PC.
If you are asking can you simultaneously burn two different files on two different burners using the same program at the same time, that I have no clue. I guess you would have to try it and find out. You would open the program and burn one file to a disk and open the program again and burn another file to the other DVD burner. If the program won't let you open two instances of it at the same time, then you probably could open a different DVD burning program such as the one I posted above and use that to burn the other files with.

If you have the hard drive space, see if you can complete a back up to the hard drive instead. If that works successfully, it could be a buffer or caching issue with the burner. It could be running out of space because it is not clearing after each disk burn.

If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
• iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
• DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
• Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
• Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD

Journaling External FireWire and USB 2.0 Hard Drives?

I have several FireWire and USB 2.0 Hard Drives which I have always formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
I have been told that journaling is a waste of time with external HDs and, if anything, will slow them down slightly.
What is the general consensus on this forum?

I better explain why after all these years I am having doubts.
I am awaiting the delivery of a new piece of kit - a Western Digital HD TV Media player. Basically, you put your hi-def videos (H.264) on a USB 2.0 HD, plug it into the media player which is then plugged into your HDTV.
I have got hold of the manual which says that the supported USB file systems are "FAT32, NTFS and HFS+ (no journaling).
So I was wondering whether I will have to format the HD without Journaling to make it work?

Problems ripping with an external DVD Burner

Recently I purchased a Liteon External DVD Burner off of newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106011) -- It's a Liteon SHW-1635SX -- I bought this because the DVD-ROM drive thats in my tower natively is REALLY slow and I wanted to get a new one that I could use with a laptop that I`m going to purchase in the future. Whenever I try to rip a CD into iTunes using the burner, It says that it's ripping the disk, however it doesn't spin up the cd and it takes about 2 seconds to "rip" all the songs. I know this drive is soposed to be faster than my old one, But two seconds is a little TOO fast. Plus, I know that it's not copying the songs because when I try to listen to them in my library, the song won't play. (Under time it says "789:54..." for all the songs on the cd, in my library) However, the burner rips perfectly in Windows Media Player... Is this perhaps some kind of glitch with iTunes??? Basicly, the only way I can rip a CD into iTunes is to use my old DVDROM drive, but that defeats the purpose... below is the CD Diagnostic log that I got from iTunes::::::::

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.

hmmm. we'd better check on the usual suspects with that. (the incredibly long song times can also be associated with these sorts of causes.)
You can't import or play music from an audio CD in iTunes for Windows
... and the following resources might be helpful with that. (check on firmware and drivers even though it's a brand new unit.)

IMac G3 hooking up External DVD Burner

Hey.
I'm trying to hook up an external DVD Burner to my iMac G3 to use with iLife '05 (I don't think the G3 is compatable with '06)
The problem is, my external USB 2.0 DVD burner I got for my Windows XP computer doesn't say it can be used for Mac OS X. I can take the wait of a movie being burned on a USB 1.1 connection.
Does Apple already have a generic driver for External DVD Burners like it does for Bluetooth?
I'd like to show off to my friends the awesome movie-making capabilities on a Mac, but it can't be done without a DVD burner.

Instead of using an external USB with iMacG3, I also recommend using a firewire one with it. iMac G3's are equipped with USB 1,1 and it is slow for cd/dvd burning. With a firewire case you can use all the speed of your writer.
On the other hand, some writers (CD-R or DVD-R) are not fully functioning with all applications. Toast can handle much of them but iTunes for example was not functioning with my old mitsumi CD-R. I prefered to buy an LG and now it works perfectly.

I would like to know any info about the Sony DRX820U external DVD burner and I know this one is a USB connection I know that it has a firewire one too. I know that this one doesn't say that it will work with a Mac it only has Windows only burning apps. Can I still use it even if it doesn't say on the box Mac compatible or it's just that they don't have any Mac progs in the box, does this goes for all external DVD burners that doesn't say Mac compatible? I don't mind if it doesn't boot from it I just want to burn at the 16X speed compared to my 8X that I have now. If you have any other type of DVD burners besides the Sony, please let me know.

Sony is not renowned for Mac support, even thogh Apple has used specific model drives, many do not have firmware that works well with a Mac.
I would suggest looking at a Mac-vendor such as LaCie or OWC if you want an external drive; FireWire is preferable, because you can boot from it if need be.
On the other hand, internal 16X DVD burners (DVR-111D or ND3550A) can be had for under $40 online; I would suggest replacing your stock drive with one of these. You can always get an external FireWire/USB 5.25" (BYTECC makes perfectly functional inexpensive casings, check out Newegg.com as one resource for both items) casing for your existing drive, if you want the option of having two drives available.

External DVD Burner

I'd like to get an external dvd burner for my iBook. I'd like to be able to use it with iDVD. Is firewire better than USB? USB would make it compatible with our pc.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a burner and other software I might need to burn dvds?

You should be able to create a disk image of the dvd from within iDVD, and you can then burn this to disk using Toast

unless you have one of the latest models of an imac g4 with usb 2.0 i would suggest a firewire burner instead. they're a little harder to find but they're still out there.

Best external DVD burner?

I have the basic Macbook with the combo drive, and I'm considering getting an external DVD burner so that I can actually burn DVDs (which I didn't think I'd be doing originally, which is why I got the baseline Macbook...oh well) and to use for watching movies while at home to save wear and tear on my internal drive.
I've heard a couple different things, that every external will work, that only some will, that the Sony burners work, that others don't... I know PC hardware backwards and forwards (used PCs for decades...but I'm much better now ) but as I'm new to Macs I want to make sure I do this right the first time. Can I get any old burner and stuff it in an external enclosure? Does it have to be FireWire, or is USB okay?

It is an, "old," drive because it is a few years old, but I am using a Sony DRU-120A 5.25 inch half-height dive in an ADS brand firewire enclosure. Each item was about $40. Insstalling the drive in the enclosure was about a five minute task: snsp on the cables and install total of six screws. No special software is required with Tiger 10.4.8 and newer.
The ADS enclosure is cool because it is translucent aqua plastic and complements the Apple design ethos. The ADS enclosure is exactly the same footprint as an even older Sony USB burner I have, and even the little rubbery stacking feet mesh between the ADS and Sony box. I'd hazard a guess that ADS was the OEM supplier for Sony back then.

I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

Thinkpad X230 could not recognize external DVD burner

Hi, I received my Thinkpad X230 two weeks ago and was planning to make backup media. However, X230 could not recognize my external DVD burner. It was not responding no matter which USB port I tried. The DVD burner works fine with my T400 and X201. Just want to know how to get X230 to work with the DVD burner so that I can make factory backup media. Thanks a lot!

Your external USB DVD±RW disc drive may require more power than can be provided via one USB port in order to burn DVDs. Did the drive come with a "double-headed" Y-shaped USB cable to connect to two USB ports on the notebook? If so, try plugging both of the large ends into the ThinkPad's USB ports and the small end into the external drive and then see if it is now recognized by the computer.
