External DVD/cd drive for 2010 128G model

good morning
i am looking for a reliable external DVD/cd RW drive for my recently purchased 2010 MBAir 128G. I have read unfavorable reviews for Apples offering (about 50%) and would welcome any suggestions. Should I consider BluRay, or will that complicate matters?

Apple does not support BluRay so that is not a wise choice. Any brand DVD drive will work with your MBA. The most durable seem to be the tray loading models.

hey,
hopefully someone will be able to help me out with this little problem. after like 2.5-3 years my imac's dvd/cd drive has stopped reading disks. i'll insert the disc and it'll act like it's trying to read it and then after about 30 seconds to a minute it'll spit the disc back out. i'm definitely out of warranty and wanted to know if anyone could recommend a new external dvd/cd drive(?) or burner(?) or whatever it is i actually need to be able to play, upload, and burn dvds and cds. i'd rather not have a new internal drive installed and i'd prefer to just buy an external.
sorry if i sound computer illiterate with this post but for the most part i really am. thanks again for anyone that can help me out.

Im been interested in getting an external DVD-Reweriter drive for a while now and were wondering if anyone could list me some compatible ones and where i could get them from in the UK. Iv seen a few around but wasnt sure if they would be compatible, desperately need one for data back-up considering i only have a combo drive on my MacBook!

This isn't an exhaustive list, but I have a Sony DRU-120A in a generic external Firewire enclosure made by ADS. There are newer faster burners out there, but this drive worked fine with my Macbook running OSX 10.4.10. I downloaded the Ubuntu Linux 7.10 live DVD ISO and used OSX's Disk Utility to burn the ISO to a DVD-R disc.
OSX did not support non-Apple drives for burning until 10.4. For the older OSX releases, a program like Roxio's Toast is needed to support non-Apple drives.
I like the idea of using an external burner. Discussion threads have posts with users having problems with superdrives not burning correctly after only a few months of operation.

A lot of people have a Mac where the superdrive has been taken out to be replaced with a harddisk. Try to find a friend who has done that, give him a beer and take the superdrive, then buy a superdrive container from OWC or another for afew dollars and put it in there. This slimdrive container has a USB connector. There you go.

If you purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive, it will only work with select Apple devices. It won't work, for example, on my Late 2011 model that has a SuperDrive built-in, but it will work with an Air, Retina model, new 'drive-less' iMacs, etc.
As far as I know, though, you can only hack the drive to work with some other Apple devices, but not with Windows PCs. Which is a shame as other, less expensive DVD/CD devices will work with just about any machine.

I have only used the SuperDrive in my eMac.
I think it has died and I am wondering about just buying an external drive to work with my 1 GB 800mhz eMac.

How is this to set up?

I did this firmware thing but I sadly don't recall what it is right now.
That didn't work.
Then I turned over my eMac opened up the back and pressed the PNU or PMI button.
That didn't work.
Then I cleaned the drive using my DVD/CD cleaner.
That worked.
The firmware thing and PNU/PMI thing are on thread in this section.
I would say start clicking around for topics similar to yours. I apologize that I don't have more of an exact offering of information.

I find Optical Drives short lived, especially on Macs, but have you tried a CD Cleaner Disc?
One other fix in 10.4.x...
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

It does not matter what I plug in to the USB post, the results is the same ...
U use external hard drives, memory sticks (new and my old memory sticks), I also use an external cd / dvd writer LG Portable Super Multy Drive
They all run for ± 1 min then it loose contact and I get error messages like, error code -8062 or PowerPC applications are no longer supported..... etc

choose the right version for your chipset , look for version for floppy 32bit , run it take some diskette put , and this file will put the drivers right to diskette, then copy this files from diskette, and save them somewhere on the hard (by the way DO THIS ON SOME other computer) . the name of the floopy manager file is "f6flpy32"

Take the tirth party program called: "nLite" copy the disired windows to a folder on the pc, and then turn on the nLite program (the program runs only on windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista) and follow the steps first screen is for the windows that you already copy on the pc (choose where is he) secound screen i think was for the sata driver (choose where is he) and follow the other steps until it finish, then will run to modify the new windows (with integrated sata driver for sata for XP).

Backed up Ubuntu using the Ubuntu backup utility, and also created a clone of the hardrive using Clonezilla live 2.3.2. Attempted to boot from HP Recovery disk on USB and it failed. Tried again, failed. Contacted HP, they graciously sent out recovery disks for free. Only they sent recovery disks for Windows 8.1, so I contacted HP again and they graciously sent recovery disks for Windows 7. Recovery disks would work almost all the way through the Windows installation, giving 3 errors and allowing an install log to be copied. The errors were "chkErrBB.CMD Detect some error during PININST_BBV.", "check c:\system.sav\logs\BurnBootWarn.log.", and "check c:\system.sav\logs\BurnBootMerg.log." Scanning the hardrive showed that the 4 partitions HP factory installs were installed, but the Windows folders were shell folders. HP support had contacted me and suggested I send the laptop in and pay them to install the restore, and I instead purchased Windows 7 Ultimate for a clean install. Using HP support driver tools, it reports the wrong notebook and suggest drivers for a WLAN radio that I do not have installed on the motherboard. I updated the BIOS to F.34 and that did not help. I don't know how to extract the driver from the HP driver and utilities recovery disk HP sent me, it is in a file format I do not know how to manipulate. I can connect to the internet using the ethernet cable, just not the WLAN.
