External DVD drive compatible with Windows 8

I am looking to purchase an external DVD drive to use with the U430 laptop which is running Windows 8. Which units does lenovo offer that can run in this OS? Would the 0A33988 work; the specs only list Windows 7. I don't think the DB60 will work in Windows 8.

I recently ran into that problem. In order to have the hard drive compatible for both PC and Mac it must be in a FAT32 format. In order to do this though all your files will be deleted (in order to reformat). You can do this by plugging in the hard drive into you mac and going under disk utility and there you will find your hard drive and under erase change the format to FAT32 and then you press erase (all will be deleted off the external drive though)

You can buy just about any USB2.0 hard drive and use it with your MacBook Pro. Many older external drives come pre-partitioned and formatted FAT32 for use on Windows. Your Mac can use that file system as well, but it has limitations on file sizes. You can always re-partition your external drive and re-format it as HFS+ (MacOS Extended Journaled) then your old Mac OS version and your new one should both be able to access it just fine. One thing to keep in mind is that many older OSes don't really handle drives larger than 2TB well, so you would probably want to try to keep your external drive to something smaller than 2TB...

External Hard Drive Compatible with Mac and Windows?

So my old laptop is a Dell Latitude and I bought a Western Digital external hard drive and put all my files/pics/music on it. The information the WD came with said its compatible with Mac and Windows, but when I plug it into my brand spankin new Macbook, it doesn't register with the computer and won't show up. I recently purchased a Lacie external hd (the porsche design P´9220). Had some initial trouble with getting it up and running, had to switch primary partition hd to actually get the 1 TB storage amount. I did this on a pc in computer management, because I couldn´t figure out how to do this on my mac. Anyway, when I swiched the primary partition hard drive to the right one, I only had two options for formating, either NTFS or exFAT. I thought exFAT would work on mac, but turns out it doesn´t.. Is there any way I can format this hd to fat/ fat32 either on mac or pc?? The whole point of buying this hd was that I thought it would be compatible with BOTH mac and pc at the same time..

Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two and size them to your preferences. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you created for Windows use, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the Format Type to MSDOS then click on the Erase button.

Recommendations for External DVD Burner compatible with 10.5 Leopard?

We still have an older MacBook that we bought in 2007, it works great except for the CD/DVD drive. I need to be able to burn DVD's, could anyone recommend an External DVD Burner that would be compatible with 10.5 Leopard? Or at least give me an idea of what I need to look for to know if it should work before I buy it? Thank you!

Can I use an external dvd drive to install windows?

Basically I have a licensed version of Windows Vista Business laying around, but it is on 5 CDs, and I can't seem to find a legal source to redownload it so I can burn it on a dvd to use my legal key. And I know in the bootcamp instructions it says it must be on one disk, due to newer macs not having an analog eject method, and the mac keyboard's eject button not working since this is before you can install the drivers.
One work around I have read is that you can run an eject.exe program from a flash drive via command prompt while installing, and this would eject the disk so you can put in the next one, but if it can read from a USB flash drive during the install process can it not also read from a USB dvd drive?

But it has to be done on a Windows PC.
Plus, be aware that with the newer 2011-released Macs Apple has abandoned XP and Vista support, so that Windows 7 is the only one supported.

External hard drives compatible with time capsule generation 3

I am trying to connect a little 160Gb HP hard drive to my time capsule via a hub which also connects successfully a non wireless printer. This particular hard drive uses two usb in's to connect. Once i plug it into time capsule, it powers up, thinks for a while,the wee blue light becomes solid and there it is.
However it does not show up in the finder sidebar under Shared - though i have set preferences to show everything. the hard drive is formatted correctly, and i can access it when i plug it directly into the imac.
am i missing something ? or is it just not compatible with my time capsule ? - perhaps the two usb connections are the cause? i just want to be able to save files and access them on the external hard drive via the network from imac and laptop, instead of having to plug it in to either.....
any help much appreciated...

yep am using a usb hub,time cap. has only the one usb port- yes two usb outs on the hard drive , sorry, which merge into one into the hd, is bus powered...

OWC Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive - Share with Windows Machine?

Others on this discussion have recommended the OWC Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive. Dumb question: my live-in girlfriend has a Dell XP laptop, and I have a MacBook. If we purchased an OWC hard drive with both firewire and USB, can we both use the external hard drive?

You can certainly use their drives between a Mac and a PC. As mentioned, either format it FAT32 witht he 4GB file size restrictions or partition it.
You can also use a program called MacDrive. It give a Windows machine that ability to read and wtite to HFS+ partitions. I have used it and it works nicely.
There is a timed demo, so you can try it out and see if it meets your needs.

Portege R600 - Is the DVD drive compatible with double layer disks?

The Australian specs for the *R600 PPR61A* state that the unti contains: *DVD SuperMulti Double Layer (7mm)*
The R600 however does not recognise any blank double layer DVD discs using either Windows burning tools or Toshiba Disc Creator.
Is this a mistake in the specs (being completely misleading), or do I have a driver/configuration problem?

Are you really sure that your ODD can recognize double layer DVD’s?
I mean on the specification of the ODD you can find a mark (#) and on the second page you find the following information about this:
#=> +CD/DVD write capability may vary depending on the type/brand of media utilized+
So I think your model is equipped with a non double layer ODD.
But you can check this for example with Nero as Chad suggested.
What does Nero say?

Does anyone have advice on the best external hard drives currently available for the 2008 MacBook Air?

While most any external drive may work, the Toshiba Canvio USB 3.0 drives have generated quite a few threads on this board with people having problems in getting them to mount. While some cludgy work-arounds have been useful to some, I think the best one is just to avoid the drives until Toshiba works out the compatibility problems.

I've exhausted everywhere on the Toshiba support pages, and forums, and I'm of the impression the only solution is to buy a new card.

Yes it is an older A2, however I've upgraded the RAM from 256MB to 1GB (win7 wouldnt have even operated on it without the upgraded RAM). I upgraded to win7 out of curiosity really. Not dissatisfied with xp, just wanted something different, and the new features on 7 are pretty cool.
If I cannot get a driver, I'll have to source out a win xp disc and reinstall xp, get the old drivers reinstalled, and be content with the fact I have a fully operating computer. I am about to start building my own PC, so it probably wont be that much of a biggy.
Lesson learnt from all this? - Check compatibility before changing your OS!

HP Deskjet 6122 Driver Compatible with Windows 7 32-bit

I need to find out how to update the driver for my HP Deskjet 6122. We upgraded to Windows 7 32-bit and the only instructions I can find show using a USB cable from the printer to the computer, and the HP Deskjet 6122 does not have a USB cable nor does it have anywhere to plub on in? Is there another way?

It should work OK, since PSE is a 32-bit application, and Win7 can run applications in "Compatibility Mode" using the settings for earlier versions of Windows.

Using An External DVD Drive

I do not have an internal DVD drive and want to view commercial DVDs on my iMac. Only AFTER I purchased an external LaCie drive did I learn that this is not supported on my machine. I tried VideoLan Client software (version 7.0; the latest that supports OS 10.1) but it's not reliable.
My question is-if I upgrade to the latest operating system and increase my RAM, will I have reliable DVD viewing capabilities with my external drive? Anything else I should do?

But if you look closely at that picture, you will see a possible issue getting a VGA cable seated fully in the adapter.
You may want to try a Fry's or Microcenter or other "giant electonics retailer" to find other brand names.
