External DVD No Longer Working

I was burning some CDs in Itunes using an external USB DVD writer today. Went to reboot after updates and system ended up stuck and requiring a power off.
After booting back up, the DVD writer is no longer recognized.
System Profiler does not show a device
Ran a permissions repair
iTunes still shows a device avaialble when I go to burn a playlist
Inserting a disc has no response from OS
I feel like somewhere it's "stuck" thinking there is a device that's not there, so it wont detect it again. Is there a way to force detection of hardware again and wipe out devices it cant directly querry or something similar.
I have reset PRAM and tried other drives
All other USB devices work fine, flash drives, hard drives, it's just external DVD players
Any other ideas?

I tried all that.
Let me be a bit more specific, does anyone know from an OS perspective each file that is innumerated and updated as a device becomes available to the OS, and is detatched. Something is stuck along that process I feel and I may be able to track it down If I knew where to start.

  • External Monitor no longer works after 10.5.8 Update

I just downloaded 10.3.8 update and my Fujitsu external monitor no longer works with my Imac 24". The same thing has happened to a friend who has the same iMAC and similar external monitor. Is this Apples way to get us to use Apple products only or is this a big with the update? Any ideas? Thank you.

    Hello
Try disconnecting all external peripherals, then shutdown your Mac, pull out all power cord, if it is a portable, take out the battery and leave it as it is for at least 5 minutes... 15 mins best.
Then power back your mac and see if the FW ports are working

  • External DVD drive not working with Lombard G3 333

I have an external DVD drive that worked when I had 10.4, but had to reformat HD and now only have 10.3.9, and now the DVD drive does not work with DVDs, it will work with CDs and CDR media, but not with DVD media. My Lombard did not come with DVD originally and I am using a PC Card (Macintosh PowerBook DVD-Video PC Card For PowerBook G3 Series) and it worked before with 10.4, but not with 10.3, any ideas? Also have tried with 9.x, no go either. Any help would be appreciated.
Also, would it be difficult to add a DVD logic board to my Lombard?
    Joey

    xamdu,
I am reading and replying to this post after first replying to your other post, so a few of my previous comments are redundant.
Regarding the FireWire(?) USB 2.0(?) DVD drive: It is possible Tiger supported your DVD drive but Panther does not. I would give PatchBurn for Panther a try:
    http://patchburn.de/download.html
If the above is unsuccessful, take a look at this workaround:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040330171655882
You can swap logic boards but it does require a lot of disassembly.
Since no version of OSX supports Apple DVD Player, I am assuming you have a third-party player like VLC installed to watch movies. If this is the case, the DVD Decoder PC card is not necessary. If booted to 9.x, you of course will need the decoder PC card but I did not know 9.x's Apple DVD Player supported external drives.

I guess it's probably a hardware problem and I'll have them repaired, but I am informed anyway.
Last night, suddenly my keyboard, trackpad and all my external buttons no longer work. Only my touch screen works, but no back button, a BlackBerry is not very useful.
It may be software, but I updated yesterday the operating system. But I find it strange that all the external buttons do not work together.
What could be the problem. If I have to go to the workshop, I want to know as much as possible.

Check the manufacturer website if the device is supported on Yosemite.
If not, you can get a SuperDrive from Apple which can run on any OS X version.

  • Burn data dvd no longer works since 9.0.1 or 9.0

Since the latest iTunes update, at least 9.0 or 9.0.1, I am unable to burn backup DVD data disks which is my "offsite" backup method besides using Time Machine on an accessory drive. The DVD drive is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-109: Firmware Revision: 1.58. I get error messages, did not save the text, but usually read/write errors, "sense" issues usually cited after several attempts. However, seems to work fine burning from Toast and fine for burning iTunes Audio CDRW disks. Anyone else experience this? I see several having problems recently burning CD's from iTunes, but not this specific issue. I know it's nearly time to update my system to Intel, but it would be nice to hold on a little longer...I did try to force lower speed DVD writes with no help. Thanks...

  • External DVD drive not working

Need some help with this one:
    My sister-in-law has an iMac G4 1.25Ghz 17” LCD USB 2.0 with 10.4.11.
The internal DVD-ROM CD-RW died awhile back so she purchased a Sony external DVD-ROM CD-RW USB 2.0 to take its place.
    Everything was working fine.
Recently, she had some bad sectors on her HD (5 yrs old anyhow), so I purchased her a new HD, installed it and while I had the case open, I removed the broken internal DVD-ROM CD-RW. Installed a fresh 10.4.11
System profiler can see the USB Sony DVD-ROM CD-RW, but when a disk is installed, or when I open Apple DVD player, it says a disk drive cannot be found.
The DVD can be seen on the desktop.
System prefs is configured to open Apple DVD player when a DVD is inserted.
I hooked the new Sony drive to my setup (iMac G5 2.0) and the drive works fine when I put in a DVD.
Would removing the old broken DVD-ROM drive from the G4 cause the new external USB Sony not to work??
Any suggestion? I checked Sony’s site and there is no d/l’s for the drive.
    Thanks,
    --Bob Aldridge

    Hey Bob,
My understanding of this is that when you install the OS there is like a "shake hands" with the DVD-ROM chip on the internal ATA bus by the installer. The installer then installs/enables the necessary components to play DVDs.
Would removing the old broken DVD-ROM drive from the G4 cause the new external USB Sony not to work??
If you remove that drive that's probably why you get the:
"An installed DVD player cannot be found" error.
I did not re-apply any thermal compound on the heat pipes. Is the compound something I can get a Radio Shack?
Here's the exact procedure from the 1.25 Service Manual:
"This procedure requires the following tools:
    • Plastic stylus or plastic spatula to remove the old thermal paste
    • Plastic stylus or plastic spatula to spread the thermal paste
    • Thermal paste (922-4757)
    Part Location
    1. Thoroughly clean the original thermal film from the mating surfaces (circled below) of
the bottom housing and thermal pipe. Use a plastic stylus to scrape the surfaces
clean. Note: Do not use an abrasive material or liquid cleaner.
    2. Squeeze a ball of thermal paste onto the mating surfaces of the thermal pipe.
    3. Replace the bottom housing.
Warning: The bottom housing has four torx screws that must be tightened to at least
17 in.-lbs. Use a torque driver (service tool 076-0899) to ensure that the thermal pipe
is firmly mated with the top base. If you do not have a torque driver, you must make
sure the screws are tightened by hand FIRMLY, BUT NOT FORCIBLY.
Failure to apply the thermal paste as described in this procedure, and failure to
tighten the torx screws as directed, could cause the computer to overheat and
    damage internal components."
I personally haven't had a 1.25 apart. The 700s and 800s I've had apart have a silicone pad like material or thick rubber compond on the heat pipes. The manuals for those machines refer to "thermal pads".
I think you could use a thermal pad material like from Micro Center, Comp USA or Radio Shack.
This is the Radio Shack stuff:
    http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2295074&cp=&sr=1&kw=therma lpad&origkw=thermalpad&parentPage=search
If the thermal stuff was not too badly damaged you'll probably be OK but I'd probably run Temperature Monitor for a while just to make sure.

  • My optical drive went out. what external dvd drive will work?

My optical drive is going out.  I went to Apple and they suggested I buy an external dvd drive instead of paying $150+ to replace the drive on my MacBook Pro. I bought the Samsung Ultra Portable Slim External DVD drive and it took about 15+minutes for my Mac to even acknowledge it. Then it read the dvd and then my Mac told me it was consuming too much power through the USB and disconnected it. And I could not get it to work after that.  I called Apple Support to find out what drives will work and they told me their USB Superdrive.  I told them I read it won't work with Mac's that already have an optical drive installed, they looked it up and told me I'm correct.  When I asked them what other drives they suggest, they told me they had no idea and I should google it.
    Super frustrated.

Virtually ant external drive should work with your MBP.  I would suggest one with external power so that you do not run into the same problem.
You might try a USB 'Y' connector with the one that you have purchased.  That may allow sufficient power for it to operate.  This is an example:

    Ciao.

  • External DVD Drive not working with osx 10.8.5

Hi, I'm having issues with my MacBook Pro 15" 9,1 working with an external DVD drive.  I am running OSX 10.8.5 and have been troubleshooting this issue for a few weeks.  The optical drive itself is the original drive that came with the computer, but I have put it in an external enclosure to free up space inside the body of the MacBook Pro.  The drive seems to function fine with CDs (playing and ripping - haven't tried burning yet) but is extremely inconsistent/barely functional with DVD playback.  Only one DVD in my collection properly works - others bring up error messages in multiple programs (VLC, Wondershare, the native DVD application, etc.) and another continuously loops back to the main menu each time "Play Feature" is selected.  These are a variety of DVDs that range from obscure to commercial and old to new (the oldest and most obscure is the only one that works).  After deciding that it is not the programs, I replaced the enclosure.  I still had the same exact issues.  I reset PRAM - no solution there.  I created a new user on my computer, installed the same media players and had the same luck.  I then used the same external drive on my old MacBook Pro 15" (5,4 running OSX 10.6.8) to see if it would work there.  It worked perfectly (with the native DVD application).  What is going on here and how can I get my new computer to recognize the external DVDs reliably and consistently?

older superdrives were Hitachi mfg, new ones are Panasonic.  Since yours is new and panasonic, indications are it wont work thru the enclosure on your NEW macbook, rather as you state on your older Mac.
until you said it worked fine on the old machine, the logical conclusion is a dirty lens on the laser since it reads CDs fine but most DVD not, since the track is much smaller.
Considering a new superdrive is only $48 on ebay ,or $78 for a new superdrive, your frustration might be too much, and just grab a new superdrive.
Your detailed information indicates a firmware incompatibility of the panasonic superdrive thru an enclosure
This is the new superdrive, made by panasonic as you have in your enclosure:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/221280580133?lpid=82
of course thats a lot of trouble buying that AND an enclosure, easier still is just getting a Mac superdrive inside its working enclosure designed for use as such:

  • Ideapad U110 - External DVD Player not working with Windows 7

I did a windows 7 upgrade on my U110 and now the external DVD drive will not function. The computer recognizes that a DVD driver is plugged in (in an explorer folder) but Windows 7 doesn't register the DVD when I plug it in and the computer cannot read the DVDs. It seems to be trying as there is noise emanating from the DVD drive and the light is blinking but no end result.
I've search high and low for a solution but non seem to exist. Lenovo support has no driver replacement. Their rep suggested reinstalling the Intel chipset for Vista which I've done and that didn't fix anything. Is there a solution out there? Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Oh and my internal microphone doesn't work either. I assume a related issue.
    Many thanks for any help.
    Alec

Here's one out of nowhere:  do you have CD/DVD software that includes Sonic DLA or something like it?  I've seen that take over drives and prevent normal operation.
If you right click on the drive and hit properties, are there any suspicious looking tabs?
Total WAG, and about 1% likely, but there you go.

  • IMac 24¨External display no longer working

I have a Intel iMac 24¨using an additional external display - Fujitsu.
It has worked perfectly since I bought it and suddenly the external display will no longer work. There is nothing wrong with the Fujitsu because I have tested it on other computers but will no longer work with the iMac.
I have checked all connections, running current update and I am now at a loss as to what to do next.
I read that there were problems linking external displays when the iMac 24¨came out but I am assuming that this was resolved long ago. Even so, mine has worked fine until now. Any ideas please?!
    Thank you

    Hi Canaryguy
    1. Shut everything off display, computer and disconnect everything.
    2. Reset the iMac's SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    +● Shut down the computer.+
    +● Unplug the computer's power cord.+
+● Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.+
    +● Release the power button.+
+● Attach the computers power cable.+
+● Press the power button to turn on the computer.+
    3. Now first reconnect the DVI or VGA cable to the Display.
    4. Then connect the Mini DVI to ??? to the Cable coming from the Display.
    5. Lastly plug the Mini-DVI adapter into the iMac.
    6. Then turn the Display on and startup the iMac.
If that does not work try a different Mini-DVI to ??? adapter and cable, or test your adapter, cable and display with another iMac.
If all of the above fail, then the iMac needs to be serviced.

  • External display no longer working

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro Retina 13" (Late 2013) model and was able to use it with my external display yesterday. Everything was working great out of the box and I was using the hdmi port on my mac to connect it to my monitor (dvi). Today though when I first turned on my mac after shutting it down for the night, my external display no longer receives a signal.
I've tested the cable and monitor with another laptop and everything is working, but for some reason just not with my mac.
I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC, and have been googling how to resolve this but have no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

So I somehow got it to work again, although it was unexpected, random and 100% luck.
I think what fixed it was that I switched off and unplugged the power strip that my monitor was connected to (I was reorganizing my cables). I didn't plug my rmbp right away though. The external monitor was still hooked up to my windows laptop. On a whim though I decided to plug the hdmi cable into my rmbp and it worked! My monitor set up also went back to how it was the other day.
I am sure that I didn't do anything on my rmbp that would have fixed it because I was just browsing internet on it. So if anyone is having this problem of where the monitor used to work but then suddenly didn't then I would suggest them to try this out. Let me know if anyone wants me to recall what I was actually doing. Good luck!
I think in the future to prevent this from happening again, I will probably unplug my rmbp from the monitor before shutting it down for the night.

  • Need External DVD Player that Works on Mac

My G4 fell (ouch) and the right corner bent and the DVD player doesn't work anymore. At Best Buy I bought a LG DVD player and burner, but my G4 wouldn't recognize it. Then I bought a Pioneer DVD player and burner, but it wouldn't recognize that either (this one has a place to plug in a cord to power it from the wall, but it didn't help).
Does anyone know of an external DVD player and burner that will work with a Mac G4? They seem to all be well under $100, a lot cheaper than having a Mac repair person open up my G4 and try to fix the internal player and also replace the shell.
BTW, I guess I could get by without a burner, so if you know of just a player that would work with my G4, I would consider it. Also the LG player says on the box it works with Mac, but then I noticed it needs OS X 10.5 . I suppose it costs over $100 to upgrade, so I don't think it's worth it.

All PowerBooks starting the G3 "Pismo" dating to Feb 2000 have Firewire Ports. On the 17" G4, the FireWire 400 port is the only labeled "2" in this image of the right edge of the computer:

FireWire is an Apple trademark for the IEEE 1394 interface. Other companies will usually use the IEEE designator to avoid mentioning Apple.

i've been trying to make duplicate DVDs of projects i've made on idvd on an external DVD duplicator (Athena) and it won't work, keeps saying there isn't enough space on the disk when it's the same size disk i used for the original. it does, however, work for copying professional CDs (i tried just to see if it would work at all). my question is, is there something i need to do when making the original in idvd in order for it to be duplicated? i have idvd 5.

    No
You need to contact the external DVD duplicator (Athena) manufacturer and see what THEY advise.
