External DVD not supported?

Hi All
I bought a mac mini with a standart CD-RW/DVD ROM drive. I chose not to go for the SuperDrive as I have a external Freecom DVD-RW, which is Mac compatable. It works fine on my mac mini when I copy/back up large files to it.
I launched iDVD with the external DVD-RW plugged in, but still got the message "your mac does not have a Superdrive, iDVD will not burn DVD's". Essentially, I can create the DVD project, but not create a DVD. Is there a way round this? I know I can create an image (.img file), but how do I actually create a DVD movie from it?
Thanks

    Welcome to AppleDiscussions...
Now, first of all, did you do the iMac Software Update 1.0?

    Disk Utility > Repair Permissions
and have you tried to reset the SMC (System Management Controller)
a chip on the logic board that controls all power functions for your computer

    1. From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
    2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    3. Wait at least 15 seconds.
    4. Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
    5. Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.

  • External dvd not detected ?

sorry, but i'm not speak english, i will use google translator ,
the dvd of my toshiba satellite L645D-SP4023M stopped working, I can no longer valid because the warranty has expired, no problem, the only detail or question I have is that I have a external dvd and not I can start (boot) from this reader, I tried using the toshiba recovery discs with this reader and I can not, and set the bios to boot from the usb, esata the entry and nothing happens, I can not boot from the reader external usb reader works fine on other computers, only on my laptop does not start anyone know if my laptop model supports booting from external drives? any solution? once again sorry im from mexico and my English is very little and did not find Latino forums, I appreciate your response

Are you trying to format your laptop? Since your external USB isn't working, you can still format even without the Recovery CD if:
You're still using the original Hard Drive that came with the laptop and haven't installed the laptop with a different Operating System before.
Also if your laptop didn't come with a Recovery CD when you bought it.
We can try doing System Recovery and I can give you instructions on how to do it.

  • External DVD Not Recognized

I have a Sony DWQ28A Dual Layer DVD burner that I have put up as an external drive attaching to a Firewire hub. Tne Mini does not recognize the burner at all. I have tried Disk Utility and there is no drive showing.
I have heard that Patchburn may be a fix but I have also heard that it works and then it doesn't. I have also seen that Toast Lite 6 should be used with this burner in Mac 10.X environments but I am hesitant to go there when the burner is not being recognized at all.
I would rather ask questions beofre I start downlaoding stuff that is not going to do the job.
    Any thoughts?

I just got a reply from tech support at Sony concerning my problems with my DRX530UL burner (external DVD burner did not respond properly). They say that it is not supported for Mac at all.
They listed two drives that are supported for 10.2 and up: the DRX720UL/T and the DRX710UL/T. Note: the /T means Mac compatible! The drives with the same model numbers and no /T are NOT Mac compatible!
The 710 has a slower sustained and burst data rate, (16MB/s vs 21, and 66mbps vs 480mbs), and the 720 comes with Nero and Toast Lite.
Both drives do DVD-R/-RW, DVDR/+RW/+RDL/RWDL, etc etc.
My burner is several years old, and at $180usd, I can afford to upgrade to DL support.
I guess the moral of the story is that if Sony doesn't say it's Mac-compatible, it's pot luck.

  • External Drive not supported, cant burn CDs, after 10.5.8 update

After having spent just about a month sorting out one massive irritation I now get another one.
My internal drive is not working, (disc stuck inside and I gave up on it almost a year ago. Please don't give any advice on how to get it out, it's a goner OK - not worth the fuss nor the $).
So I bought an external La Cie burner which has worked fine on 10.5.7 for well, almost a year. Since I updated yesterday to 10.5.8 i get a Finder burn message saying the drive is not supported.
What do I do then? I know this must be really easy (I hope). Thanks in advance

Thanks but there is no latest update. The Firmware is vLA00, current.
So what is going on? Why do they do 'up'dates when it's just a downdate fps....
OK rant over. What do I do now? How can I get back to 10.5.7? Should I even'
    Help! Thanx in advance.
Oh, by the way. In System Profiler's > disc burning > burn support column it says it does have support
(Generic Drive Support). So why does it say it doesn't support the drive when i try to use it?

  • External Monitor Not Supported Issue (Sony Bravia)

I have been tryign to connect my Lenovo T400 to a Sony Bravia (KDL-32S300 LCD Digital Color Flat Screen) and unable to use the "Projector Only" (to watch recorded movie) video output setting.  I am given a non-supported error.  Yet I can use either the "Duplicate" or "Extended" video output setting just fine.  The Sony Bravia even works fine with a more recent Lenovo T520.  I also connect my Lenovo T400 to an older Smsung SyncMaster 930B  as an external monitor and that works fine in the rojector" mode too.  Can't figure this one out.

I have a LaCie D2 Porsche FW and I was able to burn DVD's and CD's w/no problem. Since the updated software my drive is not reconized. I Tried using Toast and Popcorn and the disc is not seen at all...I tried several types of media--HP, TDK and Sony--none work---help me if there are some drivers or app that can settle this little problem.

Did you unplug the drive during the upgrade?
It is recommended that you do that.

  • 2.14 Library on external drive not supported by 3.1 how do I upgrade it?

I've moved and saved projects to external drives and into separate libraries. Upon upgrade to 3 it upgraded my attached drive and the library on the computer hard drive but when I connect other usb drives, it finds the 2.14 library but just alerts that it isn't supported. What can I do? Thanks, John

How are the external disks formatted?
I think A3 is more specific about the disk formatting then A2 was.

  • Is pixel aspect ratio in TIFs not supported

    Hallo,
I generated 200 TIFs with a Photoshop script that I wanted to use as slides in an Encore DVD project.
After importing the TIFs into Encore I recognized that the were too small. Though when I opened them in Photoshop they had the correct pixel aspect ratio for a PAL DVD and the correct size (720 x 576 pixels).
I then saved those TIFs as PSDs again and imported those into Encore. Suddenly they were shown in the correct width.
So my question is: Does Encore DVD not support pixel aspect ratio in TIFs?
    Regards,
    Christian Kirchhoff

    Bill.
    My Apologies.
What I mean is a Subpicture Highlight image, as used by Scenarist & Maestro and an option in DVD-Lab Pro.
Instead of importing a PSD, with all it's layers, what we do is this:
1 - Create a 720x480 0.9 PAR background image in Photoshop. This will be the background of the menu, and should be a full 24 bit colour image. Usually saved as a TIF file but in some apps can be a bitmap. Sonic insist on a TIF.
2 - Create the Subpicture Highlight image. This is what will become the button artwork. You have 4 colours:
    White (Background)
    Black (Main
    Red (Highlight 1)
    Blue (Highlight 2)
Save as a 2-bit indexed TIF file, with a maximum of 4 colours. Black must be 0,0,0 in RGB, same applies for other colors - they need to be pure colours.
3 - Create a button image if there are complex shapes in the SPHL. This will create the actual buttons. Not always needed, as you can also create buttons from the SPHL.
When I need to use these, I then load the external background, and import the SPHL over the top, and assign the buttons. Everything works really well doing this process. Not as elegant as a PSD import, I grant you - but a lot less room for error with "hidden" buttons etc.

  • Installation from external DVD drive

I have an older Powermac G4 that had a DVD-RAM drive and I replaced it with a high-speed Toshiba CD-RW drive. Is there a way to install Tiger from the DVD via an external drive or do I have to buy the CD's?

Assuming this Mac has a Firewire Port or Ports and you have an external Firewire DVD drive and your Mac and the external DVD drive supports booting the computer from the external DVD drive, the answer is yes.
If not, you need to use Apple's Media Exchange Program and exchange the Tiger DVD media for CD media or if you have access to another Mac with a DVD drive and both Macs support Firewire Target Disk mode, you can connect the two Macs via Firewire Target Disk mode and install Tiger on your PowerMac G4 from the Mac with a DVD drive.

  • External Inland DVD Burner not supported for disc burning?

    Hello all,
I have a G4 tower running OS 10.2.8. It is used for a recording studio and is in great working condition. I recently purchased an Inland external usb burner model op-2488x which says is compatible with mac os10.2 or higher. The drive is recognized by the computer and it reads dvds as well as cds but when i insert a blank dvd or cd to burn it will not allow me to open in the finder because it says "drive is not supported" I spoke with the tech support at inland and they told me that since the computer recognizes it that its not an issue with the burner itself and that it is something wrong with my os software. He said that there were no drivers and to check my system settings. Any advise would be a great help, thanks!
