External DVDRW compatibility?

I was browsing various external DVD burners, and i found an excellent looking one ( http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/productdetail.do?product_code=Q6764A%23ABA&tab=overview&storeName=storefronts&landing=& category=dvd_writers&subcat1=dvdwriters&catLevel=2#defaultAnchor )
It's the HP DVD Writer dvd640e.
Well, it doesn't say anywhere specifically that it's Mac compatible, but I was wondering if my Mac Mini has a proper plug & play driver?
Assuming it doesn't, can any of you recommend a good external DVD burner?
Thanks,
Laurel
EDIT
I just read about a program called PatchBurn. Is there any way to know if PatchBurn is compatible with this DVD burner before buying & attempting to install the burner?

Hi Laurel,
I have a HP DVD 640i inside of my G5 and it works fine except that I can't (or haven't figured out how) use the Light Scribe feature. I believe the connection for 640e model is USB 2.0 so it shouldn't have any problem connecting to your mini.
If you're looking for Light Scribe capability for mac, you can get the LaCie's D2 DVDRW with Light Scribe which comes with software enabling you to use the Light Scribe feature on Mac and a copy of Toast (or Toast Lite). This drive comes with both Firewire and USB 2 connectors and is wrapped in attractive outer casing that matches G5 nicely.
I have this drive too and it works very well with no problem burning using iLife and/or Toast. Just for your info though, the Light Scribe takes forever to print/burn disc and more complex the graphic is, the longer it takes.
I haven't used patchburn so I can't be certain that it will work but should not be a problem. I have toast and it works just fine.
I hope this helps,
Alex

  • External HHDs & compatability with ppc & intel

    hi
my whole arrangement is external hhds firewired to a ppc emac - the hhds have partitions for back ups, scratch discs and also one external boot drive.
    but....
if i get an intel based mac - like a laptop or something - is there anyway i can access the hhd drives that are connected to my ppc emac - is the compatability issue a big one or are there work arounds
    thanks folks
    tzzz

something to do with how the hhd needs to be formatted differently for intel compared to ppc
That only applies if you want to use the drive to start up the computer, and you can start up an Intel Mac from a drive in the PowerPC format as long as the OS installed on the drive is compatible with both, which basically requires it be Mac OS X 10.5.

  • PC to Mac external drive compatibility

Is there a way to make my PC external drive compatible with my macbook pro?

Your Mac can read & write PC Volumes in FAT-32. It can Read but not write NTFS, but there are add-ons that can allow it to write NTFS if you need it.
Windows does not acknowledge that there ARE any other kinds of computers.

  • Dual external monitor compatibility

I tried asking the Geniuses about running 2 external monitors to my new MacBook Pro. They say it can only be done by buying a video card to insert in the expansion slot.
My question is if anybody else is doing this, and if so, what card would be recommended and how did you configure it?
I want to run 2 big external monitors and keep my powerbook closed when I'm working in my office.
They didn't seem to know what to recommend to me at the store since they didn't carry any.

I believe that it can be done because i've done it before. I have this small external box that plugs into the DVI port and with software it splits and extends the display so i can use 4 displays in total. I got it from Matrox
This one lets you expand up to two external displays.

  • Pc and external drive compatibility

My HP Compaq presario does not recognize a new usb external hard drive. Any suggestions?

Assuming the drive in question is USB, then Windows should be able to use it.  The possiblity of bad USB ports or a failed external drive may come into play.  Try it on a different computer to see if the drive actually works OK.  If yes, then try a different USB port on the computer in question.  There is a possibilty that if this new drive is really big, 3TB and the Windows is old, they might not work together.  What is this new drive - make and model?
Oh yeah Windows version, too please

  • Connecting an external DVDRW & Scanner???

I am having a tough time with my G3 iBook. This is my first Apple and I am often lost. I added memory shortly after buying it-it came with 128 MB and I added 256MB. I received an HP Printer/Scanner/Copier for Xmas - it required an upgrade to 10.3 - which thanks to finding this forum I finally figured out and ordered from AppleRescue. I installed it fine and everything but the scanner is working at this point - could it be that I don't have enough memory? I click on the scanner icon but nothing happens. Any thoughts?
The next part of the question - is I bought a LaCie LightScribe DVDRW 16X to store all the photos I scan(hopefully) and home movies I download - rather that the harddrive but that is not going well. I noticed that I should have 10.3.9 so I am going to have to update, but that aside my iBook keeps spitting out the driver software without any kind of message- I think it is maybe a DVD which having a CD-R only - I'm stuck.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Adding a 512 MB RAM module would have been much better than the 256 MB. You will have less problems if you maximize the RAM.
What is the MHz rating of the iBook?
What size is the hard drive and how much space remains available on it?
Have you tried going to LaCie's website to see if they may have a driver available for download?
The same thing may be true of HP's website for the scanner. They may have an updated driver there that will work for you.
    Good luck.

  • Cross-platform External HD Compatability

Hey guys, I recently purchased an additional external HD from HP.
Its obviously designed with Windows in mind and as such doesn't allow write functionality in OS X.
I could just reformat, but my question is, is there anyway to format it so it will work in both Mac and PC environments.
    Reformatting options
    Image:http://yfrog.com/0fscreenshot20100510at231p

By default, the FAT option (which isn't much of a good option) is your only bet. If you use NTFS-3G, you can use NTFS, which is Windows' native format; you can also use MacDrive to allow Windows write access to OS X-formatted (HFS+ Journaled) drives. I'd recommend the former, as I've had Windows destroy OS X disks but not the other way around.

  • HP external monitor compatibility

I just received my HP L2045W monitor and after all my research & 2 orders that fell through, somehow I have a monitor that is not compatible with Mac. I don't know how I did it. I wanted this particular one because it pivots 90 degrees to view longer documents. Apparently there aren't many that do this, at least not under $300.
Enough about HP. Before I pack it up and send it back :(( is there any hope to use it? I do have Parallels and I suppose I could install it there, but would I have to keep Parallels open all the time? It hasn't always been that stable so I try not to use it unnecessarily.
Is there another monitor that compares in function and price? I can't tell you how disappointed I am. Not to mention thinking of the shipping to return it.
    Thanks...

If what you want is to be able to rotate the display...
Download Display Rotation Monitor which is a free app & works great.
It dose NOT however automatically rotate the image. I've been running it for a couple of months now without a hitch.

  • External monitor compatibility

  • External Display compatibility

    Hello,
I have a Macbook Pro I bought new in June 2008 (Not Uni-body). It's a 15 inch with the standard options. I want to make a desktop setup on a budget and I'm wondering if my MBP will fill up this display at the complete resolution (1920 x 1080) and if it will function completely with the peripherals on the monitor.
http://tinyurl.com/lsadtn - Here is the display I'm looking at. Seems like a good deal, but I haven't done a lot of shopping around. I don't do graphic design and as I said, I'm on a budget, so the Apple displays are out of the question.
    Thanks!
    Tim

Hard to beat that price !
It says HDMI or VGA connection but doesn't mention audio out so that's something to double check.
On the camera and 2 microphones it says "USB up stream cable (enables the USB ports on the monitor)" which in theory should work if connected to your mac but I can't be 100% sure ...
The resolution won't be an issue - but you might want to check out the BenQ range of 21 and 24" LCD's to compare ...

  • WD My Passport External HD compatibility w/ 10.3.9

I just bought the WD My Passport 320GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136227) HD for use on both a PC and a Mac. The product listing on Newegg said only that it was compatible with Mac and PC, it gave no limits on the Mac OS. I did enough research to know that as long as I wasn't running OS X 10.2 (which limits the size of the drive to under 124gb) that I thought I would be fine. The Mac I am using is running OS X 10.3.9 and the HD does not recognize. After this failure, I did further research that shows that the My Passport will only work on OS X 10.4+, meaning my OS isn't going to work.
I am PC guy and know very little about Macs. I know that, in theory, a HD formatted in FAT32 should be accessible to both PCs and Macs. This HD is formatted that way, but it doesn't work.
    My questions:
Why doesn't this HD work with 10.3.9? Is it some special software that has been installed on the HD, or is it a hardware incompatibility?
If it is software, can I just reformat it as FAT32 and will it work? If so, what is this special software that I will be losing?
Is there anything that I can do to make this drive work with OS X 10.3.9?
    Thanks in advance.

I didn't try the Y cable, but also heard that could work. Again, it appears to be a power issue and the Y cable would solve that.
In my particular case, the mac has only two usb slots, on opposite sides of the laptop, so a Y cable won't reach both slots. Plus, I would have to unplug the mouse, making it a pain in the whosit to use. I have already returned the drive and plan on getting a different one, after researching it fully.
I hope it works for you though. From what I saw, the included software seemed powerful and user friendly.
    Good luck.

  • Install Windows 7 FROM an External DVD USB/FireWare on a iMac 27 i7

    Hi all!
I've a iMac 27" i7 and I want install Windows 7 64bit, but I can't use internal super drive (drive failed), I've a usb-sata adapter and a fireware 400/800 sata adapter and a DVD RW sata standar, to solve that trouble i bought a Samsung external DVDRW drive too, but nothing, when I try to boot from one of those drive it fails... I tried to use a macbook pro in target mode by fireware to use it as dvd drive, but nothing, it doesn't goes...
I tried to install rEFI but nothing too
    How can I install windows?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Best regards

This would imply that the Windows CD you have may be the problem. Have you tried this disk on another computer. (Boot the other computer with the CD, but cancel the install before it format's your hard drive.) Did this CD come with another computer? Many of those "restore disks" are not bootable and can't be used for other computers. You usually need a retail or volume license copy of Windows. (For legal reasons as well, but we won't get into that now. )
The disk is good and I teste it on another computer and I've burned another CD from my original .iso
It's a standard Windowx XP Pro disck, no upgrade, and I tried with a standard Windowx 7 Home Edition 64Bit and 32Bit, both standard version not upgrade or restore disk
And I donw' want install only windows, I want Snow Leo as primary and a small bootcamp for windows.
Which is why you definitely want to go through Boot Camp Assistant otherwise you risk loosing the Snow Leopard partition.
I know, I've just some year of IT system, but thank's for warning
No, when you are in target mode you can use DVD too, you can try it
    Ok, good to know.
    Just to summarize my try:
    - Standard SATA DVD-RW drive (5" 1/4) connected by SATA->USB
    - Standard SATA DVD-RW drive (5" 1/4) connected by SATA->FireWare 400/800
    - Samsung external usb DVD-RW drive - http://tinyurl.com/y8vhu29
    - USB Flash drive with Windows XP or Windows 7 install software (it goes really well with standard pc)
    - Another Mac in Target Mode as DVD reader
    - rEFIt - http://refit.sourceforge.net/
I tried it with Windows XP, Windows 7, Ubuntu and Snow Leopard install disk, the only one that goes with ALL methods is Snow Leopard.
From rEFIt website, I found that Mac cannot boot Windows or Linux from an external disk is not well-supported by Apple’s firmware, and for external disk it mean any storage device that is not considered "internal"*, that includes USB Flash drives, SD cards, USB/FireWare DVD/HardDrive, but that is not true for MacBook Air, that it maybe have an EFI firmware without that limitation because haven't an internal drive and because MBA it's the only Mac that can use MBA SuperDrive USB.

I had the same problem with my new G585, I couldn't get any windows 8 upgrades done by undoing and reversing to pre-upgrade state right after reboot which made my system unstable and very slow to use and windows8 very buggy, it was very frustrating but I didn't give up and kept trying to upgrade with no success to the point I started to think that either something was wrong with my unit even though I had it for less than 2 weeks since I bought it from best buy or Lenovo effed up this time with this sluggish configuration and that I have to add RAM and see if its any better b4 returning it to them for servicing.. well IT TURNS OUT YES LENO EFFED UP BUT NOT WITH THE CONFIGURATION BUT WITH SOME BLOATWEAR CALLED NITRO PDF THAT WILL NOT LET U UPGRADE WINDOWS8 AND SPESIFECLY THE UPGRADE PART OF NITRO PDF FROM TRIAL VERSION TO FULL VERSION CALLED NITRO PDF PRO 7 OR SOME SH** LIKE THAT, THE GOOD PART IS NITRO IS OFFERING A DOWNLOAD FIX U CAN DO WHEN YOU USE THE BLOATHWEAR FOR THE FIRST TIME OR BETTER YET BY DELETING THAT APP AFTER THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO UPGRADE YOUR WINDOWS8 OS AND YOU WILL BE AMAZED BY HOW MANY UPGRADES YOU WILL GO THRU BUT YOUR SYSTEME WILL START RUNNING FASTER AND SMOOTHER FROM THE FEW FIRST UPGRADE. • Photo Smart 8250 Conflicts With Seagate Free Agent External Hard Drive

I recently installed a Seagate Free Agent External hard drive.  The hard drive will not work when my printer is connected.   I checked Device Manager and found that both the printer and the hard drive load a USB Mass Storage device driver that is the same version number. If I unplug the printer the driver is removed from Device manager and the hard drive works fine.  Should the printer load a USB Mass Storage device driver when it is connected?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. Your external drive compatibility depends on the file format it uses.
You won't have any problem reading your external drive because exFAT, FAT32 and NTFS are compatible with OS X. However, if your external drive is formatted with NTFS, you won't be able to write in it. You will notice it when you try to copy data to your external drive from the iMac. If that happens, you have two options:
    1. Use a third-party application like Parallels NTFS.
    2. Format the external drive with exFAT or FAT32. You have to do this in a PC. Copy your data to the internal disk of your computer before formatting the external disk.
If the external disk is formatted in FAT32 or exFAT, your external disk will work correctly
