External editing in LR4 and PS6

Upgraded to PS6 from PS5. External editing in lightroom 4 stop working. It fails to open file in PS6. I am using mac with snow lion OS10.8.3

And exactly? Have you configured your LR to use PS CS6 properly? Is there any visible reaction at all? Are there errors? Have you applied all the necessary updates e.g. to Camera Raw?

Just bought a Nikon d750 and confused about adobe LR4 and PS6 support for the RAW files. I have DNG 8.7 but wondering if LR and PS will import direct soon Thanks for any advice

Support for the Nikon D750 was introduced in the latest version of LR 5.7 and ACR 8.7 on Novemder 18th 2014.
Further updates to LR 4 were stopped when LR 5 was released on June 9th 2013. No further updates for bug fixes and new camera support.
Nada, LR 4 will never support Nikon D750. The Nikon D750 was introduced into the market in September 2014 some 15 months after further development of LR 4 was discontinued.
You can use the Adobe DNG program (free download for the package) to convert the Nef (raw) files from your Nikon D750 to the Adobe DNG format which will permit you to import those into LR 4. This is the crutch provided by Adobe to allow for the processing of raw files with outdated versions of LR and ACR.
You can also update the ACR plugin for PS CS6 to version 8.7 which can also work with the raw files from the D750. For direct support in Lightroom you will need to upgrade (paid) to version 5.7.

  • Installing LR4 and PS6 on a 2nd internal SSD

I'm installing a second (2nd) internal SSD in my new computer and want to load LR4 and CS6 on the second internal SSD which will be dive letter "J". Will LR4 and PS6 launch and work properly from my second internal SSD drive? Windows 8 operating system will stay on the "C" drive.

It should work fine.  Please keep in mind that there will still be shared components installed on the C: drive.

  • Why can't I access external edit from LR4 (still OK in LR3)

I just upgraded from LR3 to LR4 and find that external editing does not work (Develop Module - Photo - Edit In). Nothing happens, no virtual copy is created and the externa; application does not launch. I have checked the external edit setup in LR Preferences and these are correct.
LR3 however continues to work correctly - saving a tiff and opening the external editor.
Is this a bug in LR4?

  • LR4.1 won't recognize PE 10 for external editing

I get this new iMac (OS 10.8.2) and I upgrade from LR3 to LR4.1. I had Photoshop Elements 10 loaded first before LR. The problem is when I am in LR4 and I want to edit a photo in the external editor. It opens PSE10 but no window and no photo. I was able to do this easily on a Windows machine matching LR3 and PSE10 and figured this would be just as easy. Not to fast apparently. What to do?

OK, I reinstalled and it got a little better. PSE10 would open but there seemed to be a struggle with the cursor flashing with a colored disk icon. In the meantime I was able to load CS6 and it seems to be working fine on its own and as an external editor for LR4. Any chance I'm picking the wrong file/folder for PSE10? There are a couple of tempting options:
    Applications/Photoshop Elements 10
    Applications/Photoshop Elements 10/Support Files/Photoshop Elements Editor

when I send the RAW Document for external editing (Elements 10) nothing happens at all ... zero :-(
a friend of mine has the same problem - also updated from LR3 to LR4, external editor: elements 10
Which process version is the image you're trying to edit externally?
You right-click (I'm assuming PC, can't help Macs), there should be a context menu option "Edit in".  You choose that, and there's an option for Elements 10 or not?
If so, what happens when you select it?  Do you get any further message?
If not, you may have to go to Edit menu, preferences, External Editing tab and create a preset for Elements.  In the "Additional External Editor" area, click "Choose" and navigate to wherever Elements is on your machine and you can create a new external editor.

  • External Photo Editing from LR4 in PSE10 Editor.exe

I have just upgraded LR3 to LR4 and now find that I cannot use the photo external editing feature (in PSE 10 Editor.exe in my case).   All I get is 'Unexpected error performance command:bad argument #1 to 'lower' (string expected, got nil)'.   Any ideas as to what the problem is here?   This worked OK in LR3.

Fixed problem by downloading Lightroom 4.1 RC.

Lightroom has no problem reading DNG files. Whether the edits you have done to the DNGs you have originally edited in Photoshop Elements 10 I'm not sure. ACR edits made to DNGs are saved in the DNG file itself, as apposed to a XMP sidecar file, so LR should see those edits. At the worst you will get an exclamation mark in the upper right hand corner of the imported DNGs and clicking on that exclamation mark you will get a dialog box asking you to either import settings from disk or overwrite settings. you would select import settings from disk.

  • My external hard drives seem to be mixed up in lr4 and I don't know how to fix them

My external hard drives seem to be mixed up in lr4 and I don't know how to fix them! Help!

  • External edit (TIFF) and metadata

For some weeks (I guess since I'm using Max OS X Lion or since I'm using LR 3.6) I got a problem with all external edited photos after the external changes are imported into Lightroom.
If I make any changes on metadata (or editing the photo in develop module) after I've edited a photo in an external editor (in this case it is Nik Silver Efex Pro 2) Lightroom can't write metadata anymore.
The original files are DNGs created from Leica M9 DNGs (uncompressed) by Lightroom 3.6 on import and I use TIFF-copies for external editing in SEP2.
To be completely clear, here's my workflow:
    import as DNG
basic edits in LR develop module
    right-click > edit in > SEP2
use copy with LR-changes: TIFF, 240dpi, ProPhoto RGB, ZIP-compession
convert to black and white in SEP2
save and go back to LR
change metadata or sometimes make some further adjustments in LR develop module
    >>>  warning sign on photo (grid view)!
If I then re-import the metadata from the file all changes in Lightroom after the external editing are gone. Saving the metadata again doesn't work and changes nothing.
Does anybody know if that's a bug (in LR, Lion or SEP2) or if I can do anything to prevent that problem in future?

Sorry I should have been clear - I am referring to IPTC metadata.

  • Refernce files and external edited files

    Hello,
i am testing Aperture and i was wondering if it was possible to use only refernced files.
in my Library there are only refernced files. But if I use PS to edit an files - aperture creates a working copy that will be editet an after PS saved the file Aperture as the updated copy stored in the library.
the library-file is increasing the amount of the filesize of the saved picture.
Is there anyway not to save the edited file in the library but have it as a refernced file in the library while using that very nice workflow?
    Thanks
    Maverick

    Is this true???
My experience is that Ap creates either psd or tif file and exports it out to PS. Once editing is done, Ap reimports the edited files into Ap Library and not just modification data (since PS does change the image at pixel level, not non-destructive). The result is each tif/psd file is increasing the library size by 50+mb, depending on size of your original image.
Since I only use referenced masters, would you please be kind enough to tell me what option/steps I need to take so that, either the externally edited file gets automatically stored in the folder that the master file is, or if Ap truly only keep mod data, how I do that?
Currently, I export manually, and edit the file directly in PS and save, then re-import the edited image as referenced master and stack with the original raw. Cumbersome, but the file stays referenced in my folder where the original raw file is.
    Thanks...

  • Likely bug with external editing (in CS5 not CS6 beta) and edited image not showing back up in LR

I have come across something strange today that I've not seen before. I'm running LR 4.0 under Win7 64-bit. I usually use Photoshop CS6 beta as my external editor, but invoke CS5 when I have to use some tools that don't support the beta. Here is the scenario:
    * I have CS5 open
    * I externally edit an image in CS5 and Save it from CS5 when I'm done
    * The edited image does not show up in LR
    * I close LR and reopen it
    * There is the edited image!
I have duplicated this many times this evening. I don't think I've seen it when I've used CS6 beta.

Something strange is going on because I had the behavior reported of edited image not showing up after using another filter, Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.

  • Image constantly reloading and freezing after external editing

After going through the following steps:
    Select an image in LR3
Edit in an external application - doesn't seem to matter which one
    Select "Edit Original"
    Save and Exit external application
    Return to LR,
Any further edits - crop, noise reduction, brush stroke, doesn't matter what, triggers LR to convulse.
By that I mean, if I attempt to apply a crop, the image blinks, zooms in, and you see the word "Loading" appear. In other actions, it just blinks, the sliders freeze, "Loading" appears, and after a few seconds, it releases. Then a few seconds later, it goes through the cycle again.
Only by exiting LR and reopeing it can I continue to work on the image without constant interruptions like the above. I know that in Develop mode, the program has to load the adjustments but why is that they don't occur with nearly the same frequency if you exit and reenter LR.
Is this bug in the program?

    Try the following:
In Edit > Catalog Settings in the Metadata Tab uncheck "Automatically write changes into XMP".
If you want to save your changes into XMP do it manually via Ctrl/Cmd + S or via Metadata > Save Metadata to File.

  • External edits and disk usage

Does external editings result to higher disk usage?
I've a master non-referenced image (6MB) stored in Aperture. Subsequently, I've modified it using an external editor. After each edition, the modification are stored as separate versions under Aperture.
Is it correct that each external edited version is stored in full size (6MB) each? For example, I've made 4 editions, therefore, I would have used 24MB (6MB x 4) of disk space.

When you export an image to an external editor, Aperture gives you a choice of whether to send it as a PSD or Tiff. Tghios choice is made in Preferences. It comes back as a stacked Version, but in reality is atleast the size of your Master. This is something that hopefully Aperture will change in 2.0. You should learn to take full advantage of the modifications you can make in Aperture. Obviously, there are some beyond its capabilities. Hopefully this too will be dealt with to some extent in 2.0.

  • Setting the Primary External Editor in LR4

How can I set the primary External Editor in LR4?  I recently  upgraded to CS5.5, then uninstalled CS5 and now Lightroom thinks it should use CS4 which is not longer installed.  I've unstalled and reinstalled LR4 and nothing changed.  I deleted the preferences file and nothing changed.
Why isn't there an easy way to change this setting?
    David

    Winner, Winner, chicken dinner!
Thanks so much trshaner.  A modified Solution 2 from the link you provided below fixed it  i.e. The Photoshop.exe Key was already there, so I just changed it to point to the CS5.5 path.  woala!
