External editing with PSE 6

Hi, When I select external editing, Aperture 2 creates a TIFF image and transfers to PSE6. When I am finished editing it offers me the option of saving the image outside of Aperture but does not transfer me or the image back into Aperture. This worked fine with PSE3 and Aperture 1.
Am I doing something stupid?
Thanks
MST

Try simply closing the file that you've edited in PSE6. It should ask you if you want to save. Select save and the file should close and take you back to Aperture.

  • External edit with PSE 12? I get an empty window.

I am running Aperture 3.5.1 in current version of Mavericks on a MAcBook Pro. I am trying to use PSE 12 as an external editor to resize, merge and some other stuff I want to do prior to printing on an Epson 3880.
When I try to send a file to PSE by Photos>Edit with PSE 12, an empty window opens in PSE. There  is nothing in the Photo Bin.
What am I doing wrong or is this not possible to do without exporting a TIFF to my desktop, etc.?
FYI, I am checking PSE out with their 30 day demo version, if this makes any difference.
    Thanks,
    Mark

Thanks for your suggestions, but, again as with Kirby's comments, my settings are exactly as you have suggested. I did confirm that my files were editable in Aperture.
Just to make sure: When you have a file open in Aperture and you choose "Edit with PSE 12", does that file open in a PSE window? (I get a PSE window but with no content.)
I'm going to see if I can get any info from Adobe.
    Keep those suggestions coming, folks!
I just realized I am selecting an alias for PSE and I haven't confirmed that, as you suggest in another posting, that I haven't dived deep enough.
    I'll report back momentarily.
LEONIE, YOU WERE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. ONCE I DUG INTO THE SUPPORT FOLDER, I FOUND THE APP, NOT AN ALIAS, SELECTED IT AND EVERYTHING IS WORKING PERFECTLY!!!!
    MANY THANKS!

  • External editing with Elements 6

When attempting to externally edit from Lightroom 2.3 to Elements 6 for Mac, the file does not automatically open in Elements as it used to do when I edited in CS2.  I find that I have to export the file from Lightroom, open the file in Elements and then import the file back into Lightroom once the edit is complete.  This seems extremely long winded and I feel I am missing something.
    Can anyone help please.
    Dave

I have almost the same problem. I have been externally editing in PSE5 as my primary. A few days ago, I installed the PSE7 trial. Since you can't run two PSEs at the same time, LR defaulted to opening in PSE7. PSE7 was causing me too many problems, so I uninstalled it thinking it would just default back to PSE5. Now the PS (not found) showed up in my primary external editor. Even after uninstalling PSE7 I checked under the the Adobe folder, and it still showed it there. Had to manually delete it from there. Still didn't work. So I tried doing a system restore back prior to PSE7 being downloaded. Still shows the Photoshop (not found) in the primary editor spot. I, too, can edit in PSE5 independently, save, and then import back into LR for further work, but that defeats the whole purpose of being able to externally edit in PSE from within LR.
Has anyone found the solution to this yet? I'm desperate! This all happened in the middle of trying to finish processing a wedding. Can use all the help I can get right now.
    Thanks!

  • Can pics edited with PSE 8 for Windows be edited with PSE 8 for Mac at a later date?

I am looking at switching from Windows to Mac.  I currently use Photoshop Ements 8 for Windows.  Will I be able to edit older pictures (jpg) edited with the Windows version if I switch to the Mac version of Photoshop Emements 8?

    Hi,
JPEG is a format and a specification. Any image editing software confirms to the specification while editing and writing to the format. So, a jpeg can be further edited by any other program after editing with PSE.

  • Using external editor with PSE 9

I use CS4 as my external editor.Typically Adobe installs 2 versions 32 and 64 bit versions of CS4.
When using Ctrl-H from within PSE9, it always calls the 64 bit version of CS4. How can I tell it to use the 32 bit version. I have to use 32 bit CS4 because of some plugins I need that do not work with the 64 bit version.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

The work around is to copy the 32 bit application to My documents. Then rename it and put it back. You will have two identical applications. When you browse to the renamed application PSE will be fooled into thinking it’s another program.

  • Edit with external editor command in iPhoto

I know there is a way to set IPhoto so you can use both iPhoto and PS Elements editors to edit photos.  I have seen the "*Edit with external editor*" command within the Edit header within iPhoto but can't figure out how to do this.  I found the below and tried it but it doesn't allow me to set two editors within Preferences.  What am I doing wrong?
+"If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and select "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds"+
    Thanks,
    Scott

FIRST set external editor to PSE
THEN change the selection back (NOT TWO selections - just this one) edit in main window leaving PSE as the external editor
once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window".
+You are working VERY hard to make this dificult - *it is simple*+
Set PSE as the external editor THEN select edit in main window as the default without changing PSE being the external editor - One selection - EDIT IN MAIL WINDOW
NOW double clicking will edit in iPhoto -- Right clicking (or control clicking) will give you a contextual menu allowing you to choose PSE as the editor

  • Aperture - Edit with External Editor - Photoshop

    Hi,
I recently made my first attempt via Aperture to "Edit with External Editor" and in my case I have the preferences set to export to Photoshop CS4 Extended. The External Editor File Format (in preferences) selected is TIFF and as advised by Apple's Help menu this is set at 16-bit. The External Editor Color Spaces is set to Adobe-RGB (1998).
I selected an image with some barrel distortion, hit the export button, and Aperture sent the new master to Photoshop. I did my fixing and saved. This automatically sends the updated file to Aperture. This is very handy and practical but I was shocked to see the size of the new and fixed file. The original file was a JPEG at 4MB and the new fixed file was a colossal 200+ MB file. I ended up throwing away the new file - too large.
I am just wondering if this is normal? This is my first time using the Edit with External Editor in Aperture and I am also quite clueless about using Photoshop efficiently and properly. Could I have done something differently and received the new and fixed file at a smaller size?
Thanks for your advice and help.

    This is normal.
TIFF files get rather large and the 200 MB sounds about right. If I send a 1.63 MB JPEG at the same settings in PS CS5, I get a 134 MB TIFF after applying the Lens Correction filter and saving.
If I send the same file as a TIFF 8-bit in Adobe-RGB (1998), I get back a 54.73 MB file.
You could therefore send as an 8-bit TIFF to reduce the size. Additionally, the PSD format tends to return a slightly smaller file size (51.xx MB in the case here).
A JPEG file is actually only an 8-bit file, so it isn't really necessary to go to 16-bit, but many users like to protect against further degradation of the JPEG when editing externally (especially from posterization where smooth gradients - such as a sky - start to break down into visible steps in the color transition).
I personally send as TIFF 8-bit in the sRGB color space and if the image shows degradation, then I might change to the TIFF 16-bit (or simply not use that image).

  • Edit in external editor with lightroom adjustments issue LR5 and PS CC

Since several days when I try (in Lightroom) 5 to edit an adjusted file (NEF, JPEG or TIFF) in Photoshop CC as external editor (with the option "edit a copy with lightroom adjustments") in many cases the adjustments ar not visible in photoshop CC, or only partial visible, and sometimes the file opens not at all. Removal of the preference files of LR 5 and PS CC and  a whole new installation of LR 5 didn't resolve the issue. I have a macbookPRO with Mac OS 10.8.5 and the most recent versions of LR 5 and PS CC. Has anyone experienced this problem and what can be a solution.

I have no idea, but have you tried File / Catalog Settings/ General tab: Relaunch and Optimize. Relates to the database.

  • I have a problem with external editing preferences where Photoshop will not launch when I choose "Edit In"...

Hi. I have a problem with external editing preferences. If I add Photoshop as an external editor, it won't launch when selected, if I add it as an additional external editor it will. Why? How can I fix this as I need to use Photoshop and another program as the additional external editor.
I use a Mac running OS X (10.8.5) and PS CS4 and LR 5.7. Any ideas on a fix? Thanks in advance.

I don't know why Photoshop won't start. However, it's possible to create external editor presets using the additional external editor tools. There are instructions on how to do this in the Lightroom help. You could assign Photoshop and create one preset, and then assign another program and create another preset.
I don't know if deleting your preferences would fix the problem or not. It can sometimes fix other problems.

  • Am I correct that Photos does not support external editors? i.e., in Aperture, I click Photos Edit with.... and can open in Photoshop or various plug-ins. Changes are then automatically saved back to Aperture. Nonexistent in Photos?

Thanks Larry. That certainly gives me some understanding. Can't imagine I'm the only Aperture user with that concern, so I certainly hope Adobe and others will fill the void. Without that feature, Photos is pretty much a non-started for me.

  • Faces issue when selecting 'edit with CS4' (or any other external editor)

Ok, so I have a work flow where I effectively use Nik Plugins. I have the complete set so that i can use them in Aperture and CS4. I correct exposure and white balance and crop in Aperture but then have automators set up in CS4 to apply Nik plugin effects via a batch change process ie no manual adjustments needed, start the batch and come back 20 mins later. Anyway thats somewhat irrelevant....
Once stage one is done in Aperture I select faces and see that all looks fine. Suggestions appear over faces etc as you'd expect. BUT if I then select edit with CS4 (via right click) on that image it creates a duplicate image (as its non-destructive) and opens it in CS4. Fine. But if you go in to Aperture the faces on this duplicate image are now all messed up. They are not at all over peoples faces but seemingly in random places. Right click and selecting detect faces does nothing. So in summary if I edit anything with CS4 and hit save so that the changes appear in Aperture then hit faces to tag people I have to effectively start from scratch and delete all the faces (not over peoples faces) and add new faces.
The best way to illustrate this is with screenshots. See this link for 2 screenshots of the issue. http://adamlewis.zenfolio.com/screenshot
Can someone else confirm they have this issue at all first off to see if it is a specific issue to myself or a generic Aperture issue?
After that I guess we can proceed with troubleshooting and solutions.
PS I have repaired my library and rebuilt it and have upgraded Aperture to the latest 3.2.2 (released today / yesterday but note the issue was found under 3.2.1 so its not a 3.2.2 specific issue).

Maybe I should have made it clearer in my original post. The 1st paragraph was just for colour. The fact of using Nik has nothing to do with the issue. The below quote is the issue:
"Suggestions appear over faces etc as you'd expect. BUT if I then select edit with CS4 (via right click) on that image it creates a duplicate image (as its non-destructive) and opens it in CS4. Fine. But if you go in to Aperture the faces on this duplicate image are now all messed up. They are not at all over peoples faces but seemingly in random places."
Thus the issue is generated by merely selecting Edit with CS4. ie no editing done in CS4 and not even saved in CS4. Just selecting edit with CS4 in Aperture creates the duplicate image in Aperture (and sends it to CS4 but lets assume we do nothing with it there at all) but creates a duplicate with face tags in the wrong places.
After further investigation I changed my external editing software option in preferences to Pixelmator and the same issue occurs.
So to replicate the issue in my place there are 2 simple steps that I need to make (and would like tested by someone else):
    1. Tag some peoples faces in an Aperture image
    2. Select edit with (any external editor)
Then go back in to Aperture (immediately) and select faces on the duplicate image created and see if the faces are in the correct position.
Note I have my external editor set to TIFF 8 Bit 300dpi using Adobe RGB colour space.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Can't export images edited with external editor

Images edited within iPhoto '11 export to the desktop without a problem but images that have been edited with an external editor (Photoshop CS4) will not export. The following dialog come up:
    Exporting...
    Unable to create /Users/<name>/Desktop/
    Cancel
Don't know if this has any bearing but the problem is on my wife's iMac, not my MacPro.
Any clues to the source of the problem will be appreciated.

Thanks TD for your input. While I could not get the rebuild to work (it would show 97% done then hang up), it helped me isolate the problem. I ended up deleting all the images that were edited by PS CS4 then tried to do the rebuild again. Still no luck. I then opened the file sans the edited PS images and it worked.
I then edited one of the images using PS CS4 as the external editor and that worked. I then exported the image to the desktop and that also worked. The only think I can think of is that the original edits were done in iPhoto 9.0 and I have since updated it to 9.1. Whatever - it works and the only loss were some edits on a dozen or so family candid shots.
Your help in getting me headed is most appreciated.

  • With PSE 12, is there a magic trick for repeating editing steps that were done on one photo to another?

With PSE 12, is there a magic trick for repeating editing steps that were done on one photo to another?

    No magic, sorry...
If you are able to achieve your goal by using adjustment layers, you can save the first picture in psd or tiff format to keep the layers. If you have a new file needing the same adjustments, have both pictures open and copy the adjustments layers to the new file.
But the best solution, by far, is to edit in the ACR module. You can use it not only for raw files, but also with jpegs, psd or tiffs. Edit the first picture, then when editing the following one, choose 'previous version' from the menu icon on the right of the 'basic' tab.

  • Editing with External Editors

Heya folks, a quick query as i suspect ive probably missed something, i have Pixelmator installed as a cheaper image editor with much of the functionality of Photoshop, and i want to use it as my external editor. How do i go about doing that? I go to Images > Edit With> but the option for external editor is greyed out.
    Any ideas?
    cheers
    Rowan

from page 350 of the user's manual:
To set an external editor in Aperture:
1 Choose Aperture > Preferences, or press Command-Comma (,), then click Export.
2 Click the Choose button below the External Image Editor field, navigate to an
application in the Select Application dialog, then click Select.
The application’s name appears in the External Image Editor field.
3 Choose the appropriate 16-bit file format (TIFF or PSD) from the External Editor File
    Format pop-up menu.
This is the file format Aperture uses when opening files in external editors.
