External editor failing to launch
I have Topaz Impression set up as an external editor, however when I choose to edit externally, the topaz app does not launch but aperture creates a Tiff.... Any ideas here? Functionality seems to work with some apps such as preview.... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

Elements 8 Editor fails to launch
While using PSE 8 editor, it crashed - there was an error message and it shut down. When I tried to launch it again, the organizer will launch, but not the editor, even if I try to launch it from the organizer workspace. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but still have the same problem. I have gotten a message a couple of times that there was an error in a file and that it should be deleted, but even after deleting it, and restarting Elements, the editor won't launch. Any ideas?

In Windows Explorer, right click (once) on the icon to which the blue arrow points.
Now you should see the dialog to which the two red arrows point. Left click where indicated to create the desktop shortcut

Using Version 8...Edit doesn't launch. Organize does and all auto fix functions work. Selectin Edit picture from Organize screen looks like it is loading the Editor Workspace, but nothing happens. Any ideas?
Launch Organizer, then hold down simultaneously the three keys Ctrl+Alt+Shift
Click on the Fix tab and then click Full Photo Edit whilst still holding down the three keys - until you get a pop up to delete settings. Click yes then wait whilst the Editor preferences get rebuilt. -
New AP3 Version Has Muted Colors when Using External Editor
Hi All,
I'm having a frustrating problem. I just noticed that files that I've edited using an external editor (PS5) come back to Aperture with significantly dulled colors. At first I thought it was something that PS was doing. Then, I realized that this was happening to the new versions created by Aperture even before the external editor was completely launched.
Right when you select "edit with Adobe Photoshop CS5.app" Aperture creates a new version - right then I can see the colors being dulled/muted. I don't for the life of me know how to avoid this from happening.
My export settings are:
- 16 bit TIFF
- DPI: 300
- External editor color space: Adobe RGB (1998)
Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.I'm taking a look now. It's perplexing (to say the least).
There is definitely a shift in the created-for-external-editor Version (I'm seeing the same color shift, almost exclusively in the middle- and high-tone cyans, but not quite to the same degree as you). I using my usual settings of 16-bit and "No Profile Selected".
Although the shifted version shows in Aperture, it does not show in PS-CS5. In other words, the shift is somehow removed when the file is opening in PS. When the file is closed in PS, the shifted version remains in Aperture.
The histogram is very different for the Versions in Aperture.
The color values shown in the Loupe and in the color meter (which shows in the Info Pane at the top of the Adjustments tab of the Inspector) are +the same+ for the Versions, though the histograms are different and the images are dissimilar.
I am seeing -- as best I can tell; it's clearly time to take notes -- inconsistent behavior. Sometimes a shifted Preview will not have a shifted full view. When I send a previously edited in PS Version back to PS, sometimes the shift disappears.
If I have the time later I'll make a chart. I can confirm that something is amiss. I don't edit that many images in PS, but I still do so regularly, and I have never noticed this before. (My images are in general neither saturated nor blue, so it is possible that there has been nothing to notice in those images. I have some very blue JPGs which I may try.) My hunch, though, it that this will end up being traced to something in the RAW conversion done to captures made with this camera.
*Anyone have any underwater RAW captures made with a camera other than a Nikon?*

Lightroom lets me set up Painter as my 2nd external editor, but when I right click on a photo in Lightroom and select "Edit in Painter", it launches Painter but fails to open the file.
I had hoped that I'd find a workaround in this forum, or that recent updates to Windows Vista, Lightroom and Painter X would have fixed this. No luck -- so I devised the following workaround that should work for you if you're having similar problems:
1) In Lightroom select Edit, Preferences and in the Additional External Editor section, press the Choose button
2) Browse to the Windows folder on your hard drive and select explorer.exe, then press the Open button
3) Back in the Additional External Editor section, choose File Format = either .PSD or .TIF (remember this for the next step - I choose .PSD as I create layers in Painter). Press the OK button and you're now done with the Lightroom portion of this.
4) Open Windows Explorer and browse to a place where you see a .PSD file (or .TIFF if you chose .TIFF above)
5) Right click on that file and choose Properties
6) You'll see that it says type of file = .PSD (or .TIFF). If it says "Opens with Painter", you're done. If not, click on Change, select Painter and then press OK and OK again.
Whenever you're in Lightrooom and you want to edit a photo in Painter, right click on the photo and Select "Edit in explorer.exe".
I assume this approach might work for other external editors that are not playing nice with Lightroom.A press release at DxO mentioned they were only able to offer the v4.5 plugin as the
additional external editor by way of some clever programming. They are awaiting the LR SDK to ease that burden. I'm not sure Painter falls into the same category of product.
>I choose .PSD as I create layers in Painter
I haven't used Painter in a while, but are you sure Painter can open Adobe layered TIFs or PSDs? Don't they use a proprietary layering scheme? -
10.5.6 update has apparently caused all MS Office apps to fail to launch
Installed 10.5.6 update last week. First time I attempted to use Word afterwards it failed to launch. None of the MS Office 2003 apps will launch now. Other apps seem OK. I've shut down and re-started but still same problem. Using PowerBook G4 with 2Gb RAM. Never had this problem before. I've noticed a number of other posts by other people regarding problems since installing 10.5.6, but not this one.
I have been using Leopard for months and recently had hardware power problems. Genius Bar replaced power drive. With latent problems still on computer internal hard drive Apple Genius suggested cleaning internal drive when I got home..
I did, including backing up all data, wiping internal hard drive, installing previous apps.
Once fixed, I am having a lot of trouble getting apps back on and working. My Power PPC iMac G5 leaves me with some apps continuing to work while others from the very same installation disc, will not load.
The most frequent Leopard error messages I encounter are:
Open Dictionary
Unable to read the dictionary of the application or extension because it is not scriptable.
Hit OK and get:
The documant "Install (put any application here) "
could not be opened.
Trying to Open "Opening Final Cut Pro" = The application Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly.
Message of "Mac OS X and other applications are not affected."
And famously: "Click Relaunch to launch the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple. CHOICES: Ignore - Report - Relaunch."
Already have Motion and Color working but some of FCP Suite fails to open, such as Compressor and Cinema Tools work fine.
I have backed up everything, putting all apps on an external drive. I then wiped to original APPS drive before putting things back on it.
When trying to add some apps that used to work, instead I get "cannot open dictionary of application trying to install" has me against a wall.
Anyone got a clue to get me going on either message so I can get my hot box working again?
I've re-installed OS 10.5.6 twice. Multiple tries to install-load applications always result in identical messages for each thing I try. FCP always reads Click Relaunch etc. while "You cannot open the application"iMovie.app" because it is not supported by this architecture is a familar response.
I hoped on MS Office will not load as close to my problem, except it is many applications.

How do I set up Premiere Elements 13 as the custom external editor for Lightroom 5?
Situation
I own Lightroom 5.6 and I'm experienced. I've just bought Premiere Elements 13 and I'm a video-editing virgin (be gentle with me). I've spent a day experimenting, reading, watching videos and I'm still stuck (I've tried reasonably hard to solve my own problem).
Problem
I've tried to set up the custom external editor in Lightroom 5 to send photos to Premiere Elements, so that I can incorporate images into movies. Having set it up, when I use it by selecting Photo/Edit In/Premiere Elements 13/, there is an exciting lull as a copy of the image is created and appears in LR, then Premiere Elements launches, then what??? There is no clue as to what has happened to the image regarding its import into Premiere Elements 13. It doesn't appear on the screen, it doesn't appear in the Organizer, it's no-where to be seen, other than in LR!
Resolution sought:
Can anyone tell me
1. Is it possible to use Premiere Elements as an external editor in LR5 ?
2. What are the precise settings should be for each field?
3. If I configure it correctly, what does good look like: what should I expect to see happen in Premiere Elements?
I don't know if this is relevant: MacBook Pro 16GB 2.8Ghz i7, 750GB SSD (i.e. plenty of space, plenty of horsepower), OS X 10.9.5
I also don't know if I this is the right place for my question (Adobe directed me here) so please don't shout at me if I've come to the wrong place (I expect if I get no joy here, when I post it to an LR forum, they'll shout at me too :-)
Thanks
PhilPhil

I do not have Lightroom 5 or other version of it. I did do some work on an earlier version tryout of it.
And, I believe now as then, that the answer to your question is No. Bottom line, if there is integration
to be found between Lightroom, it is between Photoshop Elements and the Elements Organizer, not the Premiere Elements Editor.
The following is the extent of my travels through Lightroom with focus the Slideshow Module.

Trouble with PSE12 as External Editor in Aperture 3.3
I previously used Photoshop Elements 6 (PSE6) as my external editor in Aperture 3.3 with no problem. After having installed PSE12 and set it as the external editor in Aperture, something is amiss. When I choose a photo for external editing in PAS12, PSE12 launches but the photo never opens in PSE12. Has anyone else experienced this? Am I missing something? Should I just stick with PSE6? Thanks.....
Have you selected the PSE application or the PSE folder in the settings for the external editor? When you are setting the external editor, make sure you dive into the PS Elements Support folder, where the application is hidden.

Using Lightroom as my external editor - worked, now broken
For nearly two years, I used Lightroom as my external editor for iPhoto using the following process:
1. Select 'Edit in External Editor'
2. Select Add to Library (not Copy or Move) when the Lightroom import dialogue comes up so that LR is simply pointing to the file my iPhoto library
3. Make all my edits in Lightroom (my original is left untouched at this point, and LR stores data about how to process the original)
4. Export the photo from Lightroom into the same folder as the original using the same filename
At this point, I would get a prompt saying:
"The following files already exist:
[path/to/file]
Do you wish to overwrite the existing files, skip the existing files, or rename the exported files to avoid collision?"
I could simply choose 'Overwrite' and my file in iPhoto would be updated with the changes from LR.
This worked until right after Christmas. Then, in January, the process mysteriously stopped working for any new photos. Now, if I use the same process, I get the following warning:
"You can not choose to overwrite the existing files since some of them are the source files"
Interestingly enough, I can still go back to any of the pre-January images in my LR library and export them back into iPhoto, overwriting the original. I have not updated Lightroom at all, but I suspect I did download an update to iPhoto. Still, I can't figure out what is materially different, and what I might be able to do to get my old workflow back!
Any ideas? And no, I don't need a lecture about the fact that iPhoto and LR are both image library managers, and that I should just switch to LR or use Aperture. I like the way iPhoto organizes my files (Events, Places, etc) and I only end up needing to edit 20% of the photos in an external editor. LR is definitely the editor I prefer and I'm not crazy about Aperture.
Thanks dudes!Larry you fail to mention that using an external editor with iPhoto will not allow you to save your changes back into the iPhoto library.
Unfortunate you simply are ignorant of how iPhoto works - when you use an external editor with iPhoto and save the edited photo it is returned to the iPhoto database and the iPhoto database is updated correctly.
There are many Apple apologists on these forums
No - but since these forums are for iPhoto support the users here are very experienced iPhoto users and do use iPhoto a lot - no apologies - just CORRECT information on how to use iPhoto (and if it will not doe what you want sometimes suggestions on where to go to do what yo want)
and they will either try to convince you that other software is not as good
I certainly have NEVER seen this - every piece of software has good and bad points - and again remember *this is an iPhoto support forum*.
or totally ignore newbie users whom want to know how they can do something in iPhoto when it is not possible due to it's limitations.
Once again this is simply incorrect - unfortunately you have no idea how iPhoto works or how to use it
Rather, in my opinion I prefer to be honest
Honest maybe - but very unknowledgeable
and if another application does a function that iPhoto doesn't then I would personally point that out.
Good plan - the problem is that you simply are ignorant of how iPhoto works and what it can do so con are posting erroneous information making false claims
Your totally incorrect posts are unnecessary and could be confusing to users who want information - as the TOU state please TEST your assumptions before you post them here - totally incorrect posts like yours are not the least bit helpful

Using (Parallels) PS as an external editor for Aperture
I am new to the Mac so perhaps this has already been addressed. If so, I apologize.
I am using Aperture for my photo editing and have been using PhotoShop CS5, through Parallels, as an external editor. Much to my surprise this works reasonably well most of the time although sometimes I run into a very puzzling situation.
Typically I use CS5 to take care of lens distortion since Aperture does not have that functionality built-in. I adjust an image and, if it needs perspective adjustment, I call CS5, through Parallels, convert the object into a Smart Object, Transform the object using the Distort functionality, flatten the image and save it to return to Aperture. Most of the time this works just fine. However sometimes I end up with an image that Aperture tells me it cannot open and, when I try to open it with PS again, it also fails. Sometimes the newly adjusted image just never shows up in Aperture and it is as though it dispappered into the ether.
I have tried Save and I have tried Save As using the same location specified by PS. Save normally works but sometimes fails as described above and Save As always seems to fail. Can anyone tell me what is going on here?
One more note. When the attempt to adjust the photo in CS5 fails I have tried again and again and it always seems to fail for those images. I have no idea why this should be but repeated attempts fail. I have success about 60% of the time and the rest of the time either I get an image that cannot be opened or an image that just disappers. I am using CS5 under Parallels because Adobe will not give me a license for the Mac version unless I upgrade and I would rather not pay the $200 and I don't want to end up in CC.
There are really two issues here. First, why is CS5 occasionally failing and, second, is there a good replacement for CS5 that will work with Aperture to do Perspective Adjustments. I have the trial of PTLens but CS5 is much more flexible in how it allows me to distort an image since not all my image distortions from UWA lenses are symetrical and PTLens only handles symetrical distortion.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.Agreeing with 99jon, and adding that in my opinion, the only logical use of the two programs is to use the Lightroom Library Module (not the PSE Organizer) as the tool for organizing your photos, and the Lightroom Develop module as your primary editor, and the PHotoshop Elements Editor as the supplemental editor for the situation where you need more power editing than Lightroom provides.
Why? Because Lightroom is designed so that it can relatively seemlessly send photos to PSE for extra editing and receive the edited photo back from PSE.
There is no relatively seemless way to have the PSE Organizer send photos to Lightroom and receive the edited photo in return. You will do a lot of extra work to make this work. I am also very skeptical about this statement, I don't think it opens your photos in the Lightroom Develop Module, but I admit I haven't tried it: "I figured out how to configure Elements to call Lightroom to edit a picture directly. (Edit-> Preferences->Editing) WIth that setting, I can now use lightroom on my photos." -
How do I configure the custom external editor to work with Premiere Elements 13
Situation
I own Lightroom 5.6 and I'm experienced. I've just bought Premiere Elements 13 and I'm a video-editing virgin (be gentle with me). I've spent a day experimenting, reading, watching videos, I've tried asking my question in Premiere Elements forum, and I'm still stuck (i.e. I've tried reasonably hard to solve my own problem).

3. If I configure it correctly, what does good look like: what should I expect to see happen in Premiere Elements when I squirt photos over from LR5 via the 'Edit In' option in LR5?
I don't know if this is relevant: MacBook Pro 16GB 2.8Ghz i7, 750GB SSD (i.e. plenty of space, plenty of horsepower), OS X 10.9.5
I'm hoping the answer isn't 'sorry, it can't be done' because if it is possible, it would be a real contribution to my video editing workflow.
Thanks
PhilYou don't have to buy an Apple keyboard, but you probably need at least to buy a keyboard that connects via proper USB instead of through some Windoze-world adapter, which probably requires a driver that's not available for the Mac OS.
The Apple Bluetooth KB and Magic Trackpad make a fabulous combination for use with any MacBook Pro that spends a lot of time in clamshell mode, because the trackpad works exactly like the built-in trackpad. So there's no transition adjustment to make when you pack up your MBP and go portable with it. -
"open in external editor" not working
I use "open in external editor" a lot to edit pictures in Photoshop, but it has stopped working. Now it launches Photoshop, but doesn't open/load the relevant image.
What has changed since I had this working?
I had a couple of kernel panics, and used "archive and install" to re-install Tiger, and then 10.4.3.
I am using iphoto 5.0.4 and Photoshop CS 8.
Any remedies/help gratefully received.Hi Nige,
It is a Photoshop problem and probably because it is missing files.
this is an old copy/paste from MacFixit it.
Try this suggestion I copied and pasted from MacFixIt first
"Photoshop CS: Fix for file opening problem Yesterday we reported that since installing Mac OS X 10.4, Photoshop CS refuses to open any new files or create any new documents, reporting a "program error" when one tries to do so. Our previously reported workaround involved re-installing Photoshop CS, but MacFixIt reader Bryan Schappel now offers a faster solution:
"This happens because the Archive and Install option does not copy over a necessary folder for Photoshop. The critical folder is called 'ScriptingAdditions' and is stored in the main Library folder. This folder contains one file 'Adobe Unit Types' that makes Photoshop open files that have been double-clicked or dragged to the PS icon in the Dock.
"Simply move this folder (and file) from the 'Previous System' backup to the Library folder, relaunch Photoshop and all is well again. No need to completely re-install.""
I copied an pasted instead of putting the link in because it is not on the front page and you would have to search around to find it. Hope it is ok to do that here. If you don't still have the folder then you have to reinstall PhotoShop. -
Saving to Aperture after using Photoshop as an External Editor
I'd be grateful for guidance please. I use Aperture but sometimes use the external editor (Photoshop in my case). When I have finished editing in Photoshop what is the best way to get the finished photograph back into Aperture? Do I have to do another import or is there a way to get the saved photo as another version next to the original but including the work I did in Photoshop. If it is possible I would expect this to be a flattened image (ie not preserving Photoshop layers). Thoughts and guidance would be much appreciated.
The following series of events occurs without fail in aperture 3 and CSPS4:
I place a single JPG image on desktop. Then, in aperture, I create a new project named TEST. I then import this single JPG into aperture, making the choice to store the master on the desktop, rather than in the aperture library.
The JPG image now is in aperture in the PROJECT "TEST". I then select this single image in aperture and send it to CSPS4 to edit.
I can see aperture write a new image to the project with the same name as the JPG but the suffix is now TIFF (note two "f" in this suffix). This happens as photoshop is opening and i can briefly see the TIFF file in the aperture browser before photoshop completes opening.
I then edit the "TIFF" image in photoshop (which is by now completely opened) and SAVE (not save as...) it. Since I have previously chosen 16bit TIFF in the preferences I expect to get this file with the photoshop edits in the aperture project TEST. HOWEVER, the file is written with the suffix "TIF". Note that there is only one "f" in this suffix.
Now, on my desktop I have THREE files, a JPG, a TIFF, and a TIF. Aperture shows only 2 images in the TEST project, the original JPG and the TIFF. This TIFF was written by aperture before i edited it in photoshop. Apparently my edits in photoshop are in the file IMAGE.TIF, which is not in my aperture TEST project.
This has to be a bug regarding the suffexes "TIFF" and "TIF" This would explain why my "edited" file in my aperture project TEST shows no evidence of having been edited.
This has been difficult to explain clearly but perhaps someone has noticed.

Indesign fails to launch again on mac mini
Here is the report generated when indesign fails to launch. I followed all the advice from previous posts and created a secondary account which now has the same problem. I have been told to backup everything and dump my computer and reload everything. I have no idea how to do that but can learn quickly. Both BDQqua and RRFs's were a great help but the problem is still lurking and stops me from working.

This is what i did to "kinda" fix it
Rename the following
c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS5\Plug-Ins\UI\csxs.apln to csxs.apln.old
c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS5\required\support for javascript.rpln to support for javascript.rpln.old
c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Extensions\ScriptingSupport.8li to ScriptingSupport.8li.old
use this file from InDesign CS4
c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\required\support for javascript.rpln
place in
c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS5\required
This will at least allow these apps to open.
InDesign May throw a goofy error when starting but if you hit ok it still opens.
Adobe knows this is an issue yet refuses to fix it...
I wrote a batch file to make these changes then put that in a location easily accesible on the network then used microsoft's psexec to to run that batch file on all lab PC's
