External editor linking and data loss

Hello,
I know this has been discussed before, but there seems to be a bit of confusion in some of the posts here and I'd like a fresh answer, please
I'm using Photoshop as my external editor for iPhoto. When double-clicking a photo in iPhoto, one of three things will happen:
1) If the original photo was a RAW photo, it will open the RAW in PS. (I've chosen this function in iPhoto).
2) If the original photo was a jpg and it has NOT been edited at all, (this includes even rotating the photo), iPhoto will send the original jpg (from the "Originals" folder in iPhoto) to PS. I can double check this by choosing "Save As..." in PS to see the source directory.
3) If the original photo was a jpg and it HAS been edited, iPhoto will send the modified jpg (from the "Modified" folder in iPhoto) to PS. I can double check this by choosing "Save As..." in PS to see the source directory.
My questions are these:
- Is there anyway to always open the original photo with photoshop?
- Can't Apple come up with a more efficent way to rotate a photo without having to save an entirely new version of the photo in the "Modified" folder?
- (This is a toughy): I know that resaving a jpg in an image editing program like PS can recompress the jpg everytime you save, and this brings down the quality of the shot. When iPhoto saves a new rotated version of a jpg, does it lose quality as a second generation? I know that the file size changes, (2.8MB for the original, 2.1 for the modified), so has this new "Modified" jpg been recompresed?

Yes, duplicate the Original (Right click -> Duplicate) but there is no way to have multiple modifieds associated with a single Original. (however, this is possible in Aperture).

Im sure they can, but here's the thinking about it: iPhoto never changes the Original. Rotation is a change, so, the modification is made on a copy. Why should there be an exception for rotation? And if you make an exception for rotation, why not red-eye?

Not a toughy at all. Everytime you save a jpeg it is recompressed. Yes, data is thrown away as testified to by the file size.
What you're looking for here is lossless editing. From your questions, I think you're reaching the limit of iPhoto. It may be time to look at Aperture, which can do lossless editing, have a single Master associated with many versions etc. Definitely a learning curve...

Intensify as external editor: how, and how well, does it work?

Intensify from developer macphun I have assigned as an image editor in iPhoto Preferences/Advanced. In iPhoto when i click on Edit the image opens in Intensity and can be edited. Unfortunately, saving after editing the image presents a standard file dialog offering to save the edited image in Documents. Getting the edited image back into iPhoto requires importing. Afterwards other data, such as Places, Faces and notes, are gone, although the original unedited photo remains in iPhoto and still has the data.
To edit with Intensify seems to require exporting, editing, then re-importing the photo. Is this how all iPhoto external editors work? I had thought that an external editor would substitute for iPhoto's editor and edit the existing photo while it remained in the iPhoto library I see on the MacPhun web site that Intensify Pro can be run "...as either a standalone app or as a plug-in to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Apple Aperture." Does iPhoto need a plug-in version to simply replace its internal editor?
In past versions OS X allowed applications to provide services to one another. I have not kept up with how services are implemented, but I think I expected iPhoto to essentially use its services when an editing program was selected.
Can someone more familiar with OS X services, iPhoto's use of external editors in general and/or Intensity in particular, help me understand this?

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate the help. Sounds like you have considerable expertise in what I need to learn. Some of what you said I do not understand. If you could clarify these points it would help me more.
You say "No it's not like this with any editor used as an external editor in iPhoto." I assume you mean an external editor would edit the photo while the photo remains within the iPhoto database, so export to edit followed by import to return the edited photo to iPhoto would not be needed. Is this correct?
You say "... Intensify isn't an editor, it's a non-destructive database-based application." In my very limited reading and experience, it seems Intensity modifies single image files. How is an application intended to modify image files to change their appearance not an editor? How is an application intended to work with single files a database-based application?
While posting here I also asked MacPhun support a similar question. They replied "This editing procedure is fine, you can send the edited image from Intensify to iPhoto as shown at the screenshot attached."
The menu choice shown does allow saving in iPhoto after pressing in Intensity. However, the edited image imported into iPhoto has lost metadata such as found faces, places and comments associated with the original, and it is placed in a new Event. That MacPhun support refers to the product of what Intensity does as "the edited image" shows why I referred to Intensity as an image editor.
You say "In essence, you cannot use a non-destructive processor as an editor" yet "With Aperture I have used it as a plug-in." To me this sounds like one can use Intensity as a non-destructive processor if Intensity's function is accessed as a plug-in. That is, the necessity to export images from iPhoto to "process" (what I would call edit) them in Intensity results from how Intensity and iPhoto access the image files, not from the type of processing involved.
You say "This has nothing to do with services ..." Agreed. I mentioned services because I thought one application modifying data for another seemed like a service.
On further consideration I realize that non-destructive, eh, processing of an image requires storing the original plus the processing steps which have been implemented. This seems similar to what iPhoto's built-in editing functions do. However, I suspect Intensity's more complex processing of the image requires a more complex file structure, which iPhoto cannot read or write.
Supporting this idea of different file structures, I see my originals in iPhoto are typically JPGs of size 800 KB - 5 MB. After processing by Intensity, "-edit" is append to the file name, the format changed to tiff, and the file size increase by a factor of 8. The format conversion and consequent increase in file size I have not seen mentioned in Intensity's literature, but may be of significance to other potential users.
You say "There is no plug-in for iPhoto - perhaps you should ask the developers to make one." Agreed. Not for iPhoto, which is being terminated, but for its replacement Photos.

N95 time and data loss after shutdown

Hi! I own an unlocked N95 mobile phone with firmware version 12.0.013. The problem is that after shutdown and restarts the time and date is lost. I have disabled the option to get the time from the network operator. I have read on other forums that many other users have this problem too. Is this hardware or a firmware problem? If it's a firmware problem, when can I expect a firmware update that will fix it? My second question: are there different firmware versions for each language, because the T9 dictionary is very unusefull in the Romanian language. Many frequent words are not recognized, other are misspell. Does a firmware include an updated dictionary too? In advance, thank you very match.

I have the same problem. Am also on firmware V12.0.0.13 (what ever it is).
I dont know exactly when my problem with lossing the date and time started but I dont think it was after i changed firmware.
I think the problem started when I had to formated my phone. It was running slow and getting temprimental. In fact am sure the date and time loss thing all started after I formated the phone.
The date and time is the only info I loss when I remove the battery every thing else is ok.

Should "External Editor" setting and "Send To..." be independent?

I've noticed that in FCP 5.1.1 and 5.1.2 on both PPC and Intel machines if I set the System/External Video Editor to an app like AE, when I use the "send clip to Motion' in the timeline it still opens AE!
Almost like The External Editor has to be set on Motion to use the 'send to Motion' command.
Despite the seperate 'Open in Editor' command ... which kind of suggests these 2 things are independent. At least to me!

It appears that 'send to editor' and 'send to Motion' have an odd synergy when AE is set as the external editor.
In this setup, if you use 'send to motion', a motn project is created but is sent to AE for processing. AE (in my case v5.5) doesn't know what to do with it ... and the whole thing turns to mush. If you use 'send to editor', AE opens fine. If Motion is the external editor, it works as advertised.
Interesting. Probably worth a bug/ feedback report.

External editor (PS) and metadata

Hello,
I have my iPhoto 5 library sorted by date and for the most part, any albums are also sorted by date. I prefer to keep iPhoto as the default editor because the red eye tool works most of the time and I like being able to see a larger picture when I double-click on a thumbnail. For other editing, I export the photo, edit it in photoshop and then reimport. I save the photo in photoshop format so I can maintain layers, etc, just in case I want to go back later and change something. The problem is that saving as photoshop rewrites any metadata so when I reimport the photo, it gets automatically sorted to the wrong place.
I would like to keep the time/date stamp in the metadata. Any ideas how I can retain that metadata, but still edit outside of iPhoto (ie in Photoshop)?

I picked at photoshop a bit more and found that the picture files retain metadata of the date shot. The issue then is that iPhoto's sort by date seems to look at the date modified instead of the date shot. This might be more of a feature request than a real question, but is it possible to have iPhoto organize it's library by date shot, then by date modified (for non-date-shot date embedded photos)?

Resize boot partition without loss of OS on C:\ drive and data loss on D:\ drive

I have an SBS 2011E server with a RAID 1 Mirror.
I need to resize the C:\ drive which has the OS on it.
The D:\ drive has lots of space on it but it also has a SQL Database that is ArchiOffice and some other minor software.
Can I shrink D: without loss of data and can I extend C: without loss of OS using Disk Management?
If I need third party software, which do I need?

Disk Management.
I Shrink Volume on E drive via Disk Management. Then an unallocated partition occurred. It’s in the right of
E drive (if the unallocated partition is next to C drive, you may be able to extend volume). However, when I right click the C drive, the Extend Volume option is grey out. I can’t extend the C drive by using that unallocated partition. If my testing process
didn’t follow your original thoughts. Please feel free to let me know.

Exporting Cross-Tab to Excel using RAS 9.0 - incorrect and data loss

Hello,
Hope somone can help to solve the following issue.
Develop a cross-tab report using Crystal Report Developer 9.0. service pack 5 or above.
(1). Viewing in Crystal Report - no problem - all rows and columns displayed correctly.
(2). Export to Excel using Crystal Report - no problem - all rows and columns exported correctly.
(3). Viewing in RAS 9.0 - no problem, all rows and columns displayed correctly.
(4). Export to Excel using RAS 9.0 - problem - only one or two rows with last rows are exported but wrong data. Most columns are not exported. Seems like exporting errors.
RAS 9.0 was patched with hotfix 200603 and service pack 5.
Please help or is there any hotfix or service pack that resolved this problem? As developer, we can use crystal report for exporting but for users, their only choice is through RAS.

Troubles with reformating Windows iPod to Mac and data loss

I'm completely lost. I've tried searching the support section of Apple.com and I've tried searching these message boards but I haven't been able to figure out what exactly I'm doing wrong...
I have a horrible Dell computer running Windows XP Home... the machine is just full of problems and I have a 20GB HP iPod that was originally formated for the windows machine.
I bought a G5 iMac almost 4 months ago and try as I might I cannot format the iPod to hold any information from my Mac (it just reads the information from my Dell and will copy that to the Mac) and I even lost all of my non-purchased songs on my iPod the first time I tried to switch it.
Does anyone have any information that might help...? Thanks (and I'm sorry for posting what probably is an annoying question!)

Question on switch-version and data loss

In reading info around the web, I do find and understand that any changes made to configuration of an upgraded CUCM node will be lost if they were made after upgrade but before switch-version. I was wondering if CDR files/database were also grouped into this, or if those are copied over when switch-version is executed.

Put it in an ArrayList and use a paging library e g displaytag or write your own paging where you can put the list in a Result object and the page parameter in the query string, then iterate over the list, fetching only the 10 records you want to display each time:
localhost/list?page=1
localhost/list?page=2
localhost/list?page=3
If you make use of sql, use limit calculated from the page variable in the http query string.

2014.3 Update causing crashes and data loss

I have recently update to Adobe Muse 2014.3 edition. Since then I have been experiencing many crashes, difficulty saving and file corruption. I was not sure if it was Muse or Mac Os errors until now. I can confirm my Mac is in good working order.
See attached screen capture for the latest problem - cannot save a file after making edits. Muse feezes on save.
Is it possible to reinstall the previous version of Muse? I cannot complete work reliably with the new update.

The update fixed the problem, however I am now encountering a new one.
Uploading to ftp locations slows dramatically at about 60% progress, by about 70% progress I get the Mac spinning wheel, sometimes the transfer will progress incredibly slow, or Muse will freeze.
Today I could complete an ftp transfer and muse crashed. See attached screen capture.
I am now exporting html and then uploading va ftp app however when exporting I am still seeing a dramatic slow down at some point after 60%.
I am also seeing the following message pop up in web browsers (see attached image). I have been seeing this message a lot since the first update 2014.3
I thought these problems may be have related to my ISP, however I am in a different country now using two different IPS's but the errors still remain.

External Drives for Mac Experiencing Data Loss with Maverick OS -- UPDATED FOR NOVEMBER 6, 2013

On October 30th, 2013 Western Digital informed registered customers of affected products via E-mail regarding reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9). Our investigation to date has found that for a small percentage of customers that have the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and/or WD SmartWare software applications installed on their Mac, there can be cases of a repartition and reformat of their Direct Attached Storage (DAS) devices without customer acknowledgement which can result in data loss.
WD has been tracking this issue closely through our WD Forum and through our Technical Support hotline and the occurrence rate of this event has been very low. A specific set of conditions and timing sequences between the OS and the WD software utilities has to occur to cause this issue. Should this event occur, the data on the product can likely be recovered with a third party software utility if the customer stops using the device immediately after the OS X Mavericks (10.9) upgrade. WD will be issuing updated versions of these software applications that resolve this issue.
WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading until we provide an update to the applications. I agree. After installing Mavericks I was troubleshooting and reinstalling drivers for days. Many Apps did not work anymore, although the updates slowly arrive. As total divergence of the old Apple philosophy, I had to use endless library cleaning terminal commands to get a new Canon network printer running again. Canon provided the procedures after updating from OS X10.6 to 10.7 already. Now it seems, that the first time I used the Super Drive (CD-DVD Drive) trying to burn an audio CD with baffling error messages (Drive already used..). After this, the RAID1 status of the two MyBook archives changed to JBOD. The changes of OS X10.8 to 10.9 I find unnecessary (iBooks could be an App, Maps we have already the same on other channels). Some changes are even a step back (calendar graphics), the so much more user friendly Office suite iWorks is free, but degraded an of limited use!MadOverlord wrote:

IPhoto 11 and PS Elements 10 - external editor issue

My Imac has been upgraded to Mountain Lion, iPhoto 11 and PS Elements 10. Now right-clicking shots in iPhoto browser brings up external editor choice and will then open PSE 10, but not the shot ( I have to drag shot to desktop, open with PSE10, save, import back to iPhoto - a huge step backwards). Same software ( iPhoto 11 and PSE10) works fine, albeit slowly) on my Macbook Pro running Lion. Please help?

You're selecting the wrong item as the editor in the Adobe PSE folder. It's fooled a lot of us in the past. This is the file you want to select as the external editor:
I may be preaching to the choir here but maybe the following will enlighten a bit on using PSE as the external editor:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:

Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

How to install an external editor in version 2.1.1.64 for viewing XMLType

I have a question about viewing XMLType in version 2.1.1.64
If you want to view the content of an XMLType column in a data-tab, you can double click on the particular XMLType field and the edit button appears at the end. Push this edit button and an "Edit Dialog" popup appears with the data presented as one line.
Push the External Editor button and you get a dialog that informs you about the not supported mime type of the selected object. You can find the complete list of supported mime types in Tools->Preferences->External Editor panel. I like to use an external XML editor for viewing an xmltype column, can anyone put me on the right track? Change the Editor Location for the .xml file extension didn`t work.

This is the case:
SQL Developer version 2.1.1.64
Oracle client 11gR2
Oracle Database 9.2.0.6.
Under the table tree, on the left side of the screen, a table is selected with 3 columns. One of them is a XMLType column.
Click on the data tab on the right side of the screen and a part of the xml-data is visible of that XMLType column.
Perhaps my expectations are too high, i want to see the all XML data in a structured and readable way.
I have tried to accomplish this by double clicking on the particular data in the XMLType column. This results in an pencil icon on the right side of the data.
Click on this icon and a popup window appears with the 'Edit Value' titel. This windows shows the xml data as one string, not very readable.
I have the oppurtunity to click on an 'External Editor' button. It seems to me that i can use this button to see/edit the data with an external editor.
If you click on this button, a dialog appears with the following message : 'The Mime Type of selected object is currently not supported. Please see the complete list of supported Mime Type and extension in Tools>Preferences>External Editor panel.'
I have 2 questions, perhaps you can put me in the right direction :
- Why can't SQL developer standard display XML in a structured/readable way?
- How must SQL Developer be configured to use an external editor for displaying XML data from XMLType columns?

16bt files with external editor

Am I missing something very obvious?
No matter what I do, I am unable to export to external editor (photoshop) and have them open as 16bt files. They always open as 8bt.

No, you are right. My nice 16 bit file goes to 8 bits
when opened in the external editor. Needs to be fixed.
Needs to be fixed and we should not be forced into Adobe RGB (1998)! What if the scene gamut exceeds this? I can’t get ProPhoto? Or the scene gamut is much smaller but I want 16-bit sRGB?
Is there any logic in how Aperture is providing this encoding? Again, I suspected it was based on the EXIF data the camera writes to the RAW file based on the matrix. I’m lazy but should set my Canon to sRGB, shoot RAW and see what Aperture thinks it should use. But that doesn’t matter because having only sRGB or Adobe RGB (1998) doesn’t cut it.
Why not allow us to setup as we do with Export how we want the Open with External Editor to handle all this?
From a color management perspective, this application is hopeless lame. Hard to believe it’s from the company that started the ICC and introduced ColorSync. We can’t control the rendering intent for output color spaces. The Histogram doesn’t tell us squat about the rendered image and there’s no RGB info palette (that again should tell us the values AFTER we produce a true RGB image. How can they call this a Pro tool?
