External Enclosure with out a fan

I bought a 250 gig Sata internal hard drive a while back and want to put it in an external enclosure for my video files to edit off of. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a huge selection of Sata firewire enclosures available. I found a couple from Coolgear.
Using it for video editing, would I be making a mistake using an aluminum enclosure without a fan?
Does anyone have any recommendation of specific enclosures they would recommend. I'm a hobbyist, so price is always a concern.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your input Alchroma. Unfortunately, when you throw in the SATA into the mix, you will find the options are very limited, especially with firewire. Most Externals right now are made for IDE drives. Coolgear makes a couple of enclosures, one with and one without the fan. I was very surprised when I started researching for an external enclosure how limited the SATA enclosures were. Kind of regret not going IDE at this time. I just didn't know at the time. Probably the reason is, you don't really benefit from the extra speed a SATA drive has to offer when it is in a 400FW enclosure.

what happens if i unplug external HD with out demounting

The Mac OS will give you a warning if you do this. It is possible (though unlikely) that some file or directory damage may occur, particularly if you were writing to the disk at the time you unplug it. Try not to make a habit of it.
    Best of luck.

  • G4 does not recognize external enclosure with old drive from my MacBookPro

I recently upgraded my MacbookPro (OS 10.6.8, version 5,5) hard drive and I put MBP original drive in a Sabrent 2.5" USB-SATA hard drive enclosures. This USB external drive booted right up on the MBP, all files intact. One reason for the new MBP drive was to use the orignial drive as increased storage on my G4 (which has a working USB 2.0 card). My other USB external drives work fine on the G4, so the card works.
The Sabrent USB enclosure is not recognized by the G4. I am hoping to not have to reformat the drive until I am completely confident my new HD in the MBP works well (it is fast!). The Sabrent enclosure (EC-UST25) comes with a funky two-headed USB cable to plug in a second port if there is not enough power coming from the USB port to power the unit. I used both USB plugs in the G4 USB board, restarted several times with no success.
So the question is, will this hard drive (a Toshiba, I believe) word as an external USB drive on the G4? Do I need to reformat it in some special way?
Thanks for any and all help!

The Sabrent USB enclosure is not recognized by the G4.
The chipset of that controller is likely the issue.
Either that or the fact that it is bus powered. An external power supply might help, but G4 were never intended to use those enclosures.
One reason for the new MBP drive was to use the orignial drive as increased storage on my G4
As is, read only. MBP use GUID partition sheme, PPC Macs (G4, G5) use APM.
To write or boot to the drive, reformat is necessary.

  • EREC - Publish jobs to external websites with out XI

    Hi Friends,
Created custom program which can capture all job posting information based on Requisition ID and create the XML File.
Please suggest me how to send this XML file for job sites using Web Service, We don't have XI integration.
So i have to create a Webservice which can send the XML file to job boards.

    Hi,
can't you just write the file down to some file share? The job boards I have been working with so far provide services to gather the information for postings from a company share / ftp server.
If you really have to call a webservice of the job board you could for example use classes like cl_http_service to act as a http client from your report.

  • Dual External Enclosure with E3000

I want to buy an external drive to set up my E3000 as a media server for a Win 7 PC, XP PC, and Xbox 360.
Can I buy a two drive external USB bay and put two 2 gb drives into it?  Any particular brands work or not work?
Is the USB port on the E3000 USB 2.0 or 3.0?
    Thanks
    John

The USB port on E3000 router is 2.0.
You can connect only  1 USB drive to the router, as it has only 1 USB port.

  • External enclosure and hard drives for mac g5 quad

I would like to add an external enclosure with two drives to my mac g5 quad. Does anyone have experience with these or do you know if this will work okay without issues?

also wondering if this enclosure has a fan or if that would be necessary...
    Thx

I have the same case, only mine's the version that has PATA drives inside. It's pretty quiet and does have a fan. I've had no issues with it. It's setup with two 250GB drives striped into a RAID 0 configuration.
I personally am not a fan of Maxtor drives - I prefer the Western Digital RE2 RAID Edition. I have two of these in an external SATA enclosure.
What will you be using the drives for? You'll get better speed from the drives by putting them in an external SATA case, although this requires adding an eSATA controller card to the computer. A single WD RE2 drive is faster than my RAID 0 FW800 setup, and the FW800 setup runs pretty close to the maximum FW800 transfer speeds of about 80 MB/sec.
I'm using a FirmTek Seritek 2EN2 enclosure and their 2SE2-E PCI Express card. OWC has a bundle with these two items. Like I stated earlier, I've got two 500GB WD RE2 drives inside (drives purchased from Newegg.com where they're less expensive).
OWC also has a Mercury Elite eSATA enclosure which looks just like the FW800 one, only in black.

  • Can I pull out a RAID drive and use in an external enclosure?

    Hi everyone,
I have a Quicksilver with two identical drives formatted as a RAID setup (mirrored) and the G4 has reached its EOL (won't boot). Can I pull one of the RAID drives out and use in an external enclosure? Does the RAID formatting render it unusable in any other configuration? If that is the case, can I put the two drives into an external RAID enclosure?
Thanks in advance for any advice the community can supply!
    Cheers,
    James

    Hi-
Can I pull one of the RAID drives out and use in an external enclosure?
Yes. Not as the original RAID setup, but as a drive, or part of a new RAID.
Does the RAID formatting render it unusable in any other configuration?
No. Just reformat the drive, and it's a regular drive, ready to go.
If that is the case, can I put the two drives into an external RAID enclosure?
A RAID set does not have to be internal. External RAID sets can be created, and successfully used.
Use firewire, or, if SATA, an eSATA connection to PCI controller.....
If the drive is, as you say, EOL, I would write zeros to the entire drive before reformatting.
Give Disk Utility a chance to map any bad sectors......

  • USB External HDD Enclosure with a 500GB HDD!!

    Hi All,
I was just wondering if anyone has come across using a 3rd party USB external HDD enclosure with a hard drive (mine is 500GB HDD). What I am trying to do is to format the HDD so both PC and MAC can use it but it will be mainly connected to my iMAC. I have tried by using PC to format the HDD to NTFS but MAC will not show the HDD on the desktop when I plug the USB to the back of the iMAC.
I have done some researches and it seems the only way to do make this possibe is to format it into FAT32. So I have tried to use FDisk to make the partition but it doesn't seems to support anything bigger than 120GB, now I am really stuck. If anyone knows any quick and painless solution, please spare me some advice.
    Headache!!

Windows can use, but not format, large FAT32 partitions. Microsoft wants to discourage using FAT32 for portable storage (for marketing reasons).
The solution is to use Mac's Disk Utility to format the disk as FAT32 (misnamed MS-DOS in Disk Utility). The disk will then be read/write by both Mac and PC.
Also, it's worth pointing out that you can read and write NTFS disks using MacFUSE with the NTFS-3G plugin. Albeit, this is very awkward to do unless you've got some UNIX shell experience.

Once you get a complete iTunes folder on the external drive, start iTunes with the option/alt key held down and select the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.  You will also need to do this with your main computer or the libraries will become unsynchronized.
Alternatively you can make a separate library using the same media on the second computer. Start as you have been doing, let iTunes create a new, blank library file which will be on hte internal drive, set the media folder location in preferences to be the one on the external drive, then add the files to the new iTunes library. Unless you are a super-organized individual, or you don't care if your libraries do not have the same content, you are better off using a single library file that is on the external, not setting up separate library files.

how do i stop my itunes from changing the location of my itunes media.  i have it saved on a external HD and it keeps changing back to my local drive with out being told

No, an external drive will not always be mounted. If the drive goes to sleep, it can unmount, or it may unmount for other reasons. As Chris said, confim that the drive is mounted and active before launching iTunes.

I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extreme (2 TB drive plugged into the USB port).  I see the drive on my laptop and I can add and delete files no problem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptop's hard drive?  I don't have enough space to do that.

How did you move the music to the external drive?  What exactly is on the drive?  The entire iTunes folder or only music?  If it is the entire iTunes folder you can do the option+start suggestion earlier.  If you copied only music and did so by dragging it there then you need to delete it again and consolidate/organize it there instead so iTunes tracks the move.  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

I have a requirement to read the External Content Type and storing the Data in a Session Variable. The Reading of the content from External Content Type with out creating a External List.
Please help I am trying to find the solution, but unable to do that.
    Thanks,
    Pradeep

    Hi,
Firstly an external content type designed to work with SharePoint list and there is no way to read apart from this.
If you are looking the solution out of the " Business Connectivity" then find that data source has been exposed through WCF and  Web Service ?
So you can use REST API and CSOM to consume those data in SharePoint.
You can also leverage the ADO.NET option if the datasources based on MS technologies.
