External firewire 800 Iomega HD too slow since Lion Upgrade

Hi all,
Since my upgrade to OSX Lion im having the issue that my external Iomega HD is too slow to even playback my song (only audio files, About 9 Tracks of them). I removed all 3rd party plugins but the issue still occurs.
Is anyone experiencing the same issue? Any ideas on how to resolve it?
System:
iMac Middle of 2010
4GB 1333 Mhz DDR 3 Ram
External Harddrive is a iomega 1TB firewire 800 disk.
With Snow leopard it worked well... Maybe i was too fast with updating this time...
Cheers

Sorry little addition:
It s about an external fw hd working with Logic- not in general slow performance.

  • CD-RW is too slow since hardware upgrade

    Hi,
I used to have a Pentium 3 800MHz with an old MSI mobo and 768Mb of SDRAM, I could have programs like Photoshop 7, Dreamweaver MX 2004, lots of Internet Explorer windows, Windows Explorer, Winamp 5 and some tray icons with applications running in the background and I could a full cd (700mb) at the top speed (40x) without reporting any avoid of buffer underrun or without slowing down the computer/windows and without the burn process fail (I dunno what ward you use to say this).
Now I have a Pentium 4 + Neo2-LS + 512Mb of DDR (2x256, Linear Mode) and the system has the same programs installed, the configuration is identical and burning cds makes my computer/windows really, really slow some times the burn process fail and I just wasted one more cd, the computer/windows becomes really slow without even using any other applications besides the burning app wich is Nero 6, the burn process even fails sometimes without any applications running besides nero...
What do you think it might be? I have the lattest firmware for cd CD-RW drive, Nero 6 updated to the last version, Intel chipset drivers, IDE drivers and BIOS are all up to date I guess... You think my CD-RW is gone? With just a simple migration of mobo+cpu+ram?
I'm using (and always was) Windows XP Pro + SP1.
    Any help is really appreciated

Yes, it's running on Ultra DMA 2...
By the way, I have the CD-RW on IDE2  in master and a DVD-ROM in lave (this one is running on PIO, can't understand why)
I read that link but don't you think it will be a little hard for me to "shout" every single characteristic of my computer and hardware and ehac version a definitions of that stuff? Lots of things I might say may not be needed at all so why can't you just ask what is needed to know and I'll be pleased to answer...
And seriously, I always try to write each of my posts in detail so I can get a fast answer without need to answre lost of questions first but I really don't know what else to say...
can't you just ask you want to know?

I've had iTunes for years now and I've never had issues with it, but when I upgraded it to the 10.6 version my computer has been running really slow, I have windows 7 64bits, I uninstalled it and my computer went back to normal. I tried reinstalling the whole thing and it happened again. Now I can't go back to the previous version I had and I really liked to use this software. What can I do to use iTunes without losing my computer full capavility

  • Slow since lion upgrade

since i've upgraded to lion. my macbook is slow!!! also iphoto very slow and blacking out photos when trying to use them for editing. the screen goes blank. any help is appreciated:)

Test iPhoto in the other account. You can put some photos in Users/Shared from your normal admin account. Then switch back to the test account and test on those files. If iPhoto seems to work fine, then log back into your problem account.
    Quit iPhoto.
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
Then go to Preferences folder and delete com.apple.iPhoto.plist
    Relaunch iPhoto and test.
iPhoto shouldn't do that, but you are running on a bare minimum of RAM. The requirement says 2 GB but IMO 4GB is a minimum for effective performance. Add RAM, it cheap & easy. You can use the wizard at Crucial to find the modules you need.

  • Wireless slow since Lion upgrade

Is anyone else finding that their wireless is slow after updating to Lion?  My desktop is plugged in and fine which leads me to believe it's not Comcast but my laptop, iphone and apple tv all of the sudden are not working well.  Especially the apple tv.  Did something change in the update that would affect the wireless router?

I use only wifi, and my laptop is fine.
Have you noticed any new wireless networks popping up in your area?
Wireless networks can be slowed down by interference.
Eg: If you have new neighbours, and they recently added a wireless network which is close enough to your network, they will interfere with each other.

I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

Do it with a Firewire cable (buy a 800/400 adapter if you need it) - the USB transfer takes a much longer time.
Start up your old PowerMac G4 holding down the "T" key, for target disk mode.
On your new MacBook Pro open "Migration Assistant" in your utilities folder.
Connect the 2 computers by firewire cable and follow the prompts in Migration Assistant.

  • Computer crash with iTunes - Using external firewire 800 drive

I am using an external firewire 800 drive (2TB Lacie) to store all my music for iTunes... At random times this crashes the computer, the music "skips" and the computer has a grey notice telling me to shutdown immediately. I am not sure why this is happening, but think this must be some sort of conflict issue... but no clue how to resolve... Any advice would be great!! Thanks!

Oh no, sounds like kernel panics. Time to head directly to The X Lab to read the FAQs and get started with maintenance and troubleshooting. Unfortunately, this problem goes way beyond iTunes, so for additional support, you should post in the appropriate OS X forum.

I notice quite a difference in two of my externals because of that (the 5400 rpm drive was a warranty replacement and I had no idea it wouldn't be 7200 rpm - but that's another subject.....).

are you up to date with the siftware?
do you have a lot of memory left?
have you tried a hard reset? a reset network settings? a restore?

  • Mid 2009 macbook slow since yosemite upgrade

I am getting a little tired of the spinning beach ball, my formerly well performing macbook is so slow since I upgraded it.
I have 4Gb ram, activity monitor suggests I am not low on that.
It is particularly slow when I start up anything new; when an email comes in the whole thing grinds to a halt.
3rd party programs like Chrome seem to be sucking the life out of it, I have checked it is up to date and it is.
Is this a common experience and what have others done to speed things up?
System spec: Yosemite version 10.10, processor 2.13 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb SDRAM
    15Gb disk space free.
    I have repaired disk permissions.

The large number of problems with System items looks suspicious: I'd strongly suggest a reinstall of Yosemite. (Make sure that you have a backup of all your files; e.g. a Time Machine backup.)

Screen saver won't start since Lion upgrade. Two different machines, same issue. Help

For anyone following this thread, I've found a solution to my problem. Turns out that a cute widget called FishTank appears to be the culprit. With it running in Dashboard (even when I don't see Dashboard) the Screensaver and Sleep functions don't work. I turned it off, not because I'm clever, just because I tired of it, and voilà, Screensaver and Sleep are now working. It can stay in my widgets list without any problem, it just can't be turned on. I'm going to delete it anyway, however.
Hope this points the way to solutions for some of the rest of you!
    Cheers!

  • External Firewire 800 500GB WD drive does not mount

    Hi-
    Here is the problem.
    i) Bought a lacie 500GB d2 drive using firewire 800 to connect to the iMAC but did not work. The port was seeing the drive but disconnecting it every 10 secs thinking that I was unmounting it during operations. I returned back the drive to the apple store since i saw that it had way too many problems.
ii) Replaced the Lacie d2 drive with a WD 500 GB external firewire MyBook Pro but the mac does NOT see or mount the drive at all.
iii) Bought a 23" HD cinema display and extended my dekstop over. I did not connect the additional USB/Firewire plugs to the iMAC as I am plugging in the drive to the iMAC and not the cinema display.
    I have tried the following:
-Power off the mac and disconnect the power both on the WD and the MAC
-Check/Uncheck the ports through the preferences menu for firewire
-Repaired permission with the disk utility on the internal hard drive
Any ideas as to why the ports do not recognize/mount at all this drive?

I have read elsewhere that the FW 800 port on the iMac 24 can be a bit tricky. You may want to make sure you have a good connection.
I formatted mine out of the box which is just good practice and because I wanted to make a partition bootable/clone.
Powering on/off wont make a difference.
I don't know what you mean by uncheck/check ports for firewire. There are no such prefs in OSX.
Repairing permissions has nothing to do with hardware.
You only plug the FW 800 plug into the FW 800 port on the iMac. You use the other ports on the drive to plug other drives in on a daisy chain.
Go into drive utility and see if it shows up there for formatting. If not, then you have a bad cable. Try the regular FW 400 port and hook up that way. The 400 and 800 share the same bridge. If that doesn't work, and another drive does, then the FW bus on the drive is dead.

  • External firewire hard drive reverts to slower transfer speeds

This is the strangest hardware problem I've come across. I'm running a unibody mbp (June 2009) with an external WD 2.0TB Caviar Green drive mounted in a firewire 800 enclosure made by icydock.
Lately, I've noticed that after an unknown amount of uptime, the speed of file transfers to the WD external drive slows down dramatically. I figured this out by watching my time machine transfers take a bit longer after awhile, and I verified this using aja system test and speedutilities.
When I boot my mbp in the morning, file transfers and time machine backups to the external WD transfer at a rate of about 67-75MB/s. This is the speed the drive should always be working at since it's connected via firewire 800. Aja speedtest verifies the speed is as it should be as well.
Then, after a couple hours of using my mbp, or even later in the day, I'll transfer a file to the external WD or run a time machine backup and find that the transfer will only run at a max of 29-35MB/s. This is exactly half the speed the transfer should be going at. Subsequent transfers stay at this slower rate no matter what I do.
However, I've been able to fix this problem by unmounting and remounting the external WD or restarting my mbp. After doing either of these actions, the WD external goes back to contant transfers at 75-80Mbs. So something is happening where the longer the mbp is running, or after some sort of disk activity, the external WD reverts to a slower transfer speed (closer to FW400). I can't isolate whether it's an issue on the mac os side or the hard drive or the hard drive enclosure because I can make the hard drive go back to optimal speed again merely by unmounting and remounting it. This works consistently until a few hours later when the drive begins to handle transfers at half speed again.
I run hourly time machine backups to the drive. The time machine backups can't be the culprit because the drive remains running at optimal speed after the backups (verified with aja system test and speed utilities)
Any possible ideas as to why the drive cuts down to half its optimal transfer rate after a bit of time? I can't figure out the cause of this, and the consistency of the drop leads me to think this is an issue with the power management on the drive since it reverts to full fw800 speed when I umount and remount the drive or restart my computer. Could this be an OSX issue where for some reason the system isn't negotiating the fastest speed?
    Any help appreciated.

    From the SoftRAID manual:
Fire hubs and disk drives. FireWire hubs are notorious for introducing errors and instability onto the bus.
Make sure that all of your consumer electronic devices (iSight, cameras, scanners) are connected to a separate FW bus. These devices are not built to the same standards as storage devices and known for introducing errors onto a FW bus.
Cables. While most cables work fine with a single device, many cables will introduce errors when 2 or more disks are connected to the bus.

  • Can't boot from clone on external firewire 800 drive

    Hello,
I have a 24" mid-2007 iMac 7,1 running Snow Leopard. I recently changed my set up to put a clean install of OS X 10.9.1 on a partition of an external SSD. I also moved the 10.6.8 start up system to a partition on the SSD. My internal iMac hard drive now has no system folder, only my data files. I have additional firewire drives for Time Machine, other data and media drives. Finally, I just bought a pair of 3TB drives that I partitioned into enough partitions to be able to clone both operating systems and all my data files for a rotating pair of offsite backups. All moving/cloning of drives was done with version 3.5.4 (Mavericks-compatible) of Carbon Copy Cloner.
I can boot from my external SSD (either Mavericks or Snow Leopard) fine and all external drives mount correctly in either case. After cloning all the partitions onto the backup drives, I tried to test the clones but I am not able to start up using either the Mavericks or the Snow Leopard clones when the backup external drive is connected via firewire 800. This is true whether I select the clone volumes in the Startup Disk preferences pane or hold down the option key during start up (note that the external drive with the clone partitions does not appear in the list of disk choices with the option key method). I get the "question mark in the folder" sign that the start up system is not being found.
I have changed the order in which the external drives are connected (normally the SSD is first in the chain), including trying when only the backup drive is connected directly to the iMac. I get the same result no matter what.
Curiously, the Mavericks and Snow Leopard boot clones start up via firewire 800 when the external backup drive is connected to my wife's 2009 13" Macbook Pro, indicating that the clones and the enclosure (an OWC Mercury Elite Pro quad interface, newer version with USB3) both support booting. Furthermore, if I connect the backup drive to my iMac using USB, the boot clones both work to start up the iMac.
This all points to an issue with the firewire bus failing to recognize the boot clones somehow during my iMac's start up process. I am rather puzzled about how to fix this.
I can get by booting via USB in an emergency but because my system is old, this is of course USB2 so its slow. If I had to use the clones to recover I'd rather be able to operate and restore at FW800 speeds.
If anyone has any ideas what might be going on, I'd appreciate hearing them.
    Thanks in advance.
    Greg

Did you ever get this resolved, Greg?

  • External firewire 800 disk: Raid or non Raid?

    Hi all,
I am currently about to by a new external firwire 800 hard disk to replace my firewire 400 200GB Maxtor. I mainly use this disk for timemachine backups and all my final cut express scratch area and work area. I am working with AVCHD video and looking to expand the storage and speed of this disk. I have narrowed my options down to two. They are both high quality options. I will be buying the enclosure and hard disks seperatly to ensure I get a good enclosure and good quality hard disk drive.
    Enclosure options:
    1. http://www.macpower.com.tw/products/hdd3/pleiades/pd_scombo.
Pleiades Super S-Combo, FireWire 400/800, USB 2.0, and eSATA interfaces. This enclosure uses Oxford 934DSb or Oxford 924DSb chipset. This is a single drive enclosure and non Raid. I would put a 1TB disk in this enclosure.
    2. http://www.macpower.com.tw/products/hddmulti/taurus/pdd_raid2
Taurus Raid II enclosure. FireWire 400/800, USB 2.0 and USB 1.0 interfaces. This enclosure uses Oxford 934DSb or Oxford 924DSb chipset. This is a dual drive enclosure and Raid 0 and 1. I would put a two 500GB disks in this enclosure. But will use with mirroring such that a copy of data will reside on each disk. Whilst this will reduce the overal capacity to 500GB I will have the extra redundancy should a drive fail. From which I can just replace the failed drive.
I am aware that using Raid mirroring will slow down the data transfer to the disk enclosure but I think this should be ok for AVCHD editing for my purposes. Cost wise there is not much difference between the two options. In both options I will go for either Seagate Baracuda drive or Samsung Spinpoint.
Would like to know what your thoughts are?
Which options would you go for?

    Hi all,
Ok so I decided to not go done the raid mirriring route. Instead I finally made a decision and boughts a Macpower FW800 enclousre which uses the Oxford 934 chipset and a Samsung HD103UJ 1TB Serial ATA 3.0 Gbps
    buffer memory32 MB hard disk.
The enclosure is excellent quality and the disk access is very quick via FW800. The disk itself is very quiet and also great for Final Cut with my HD editing. Only noise the disk makes is upon power up other than that it is very quiet.
I have partitioned th disk into two 500GB's. One partition is used for time machine backups and the other is the Final Cut scratch space.
I plan to buy another enclosure and 1TB disk and parition into two 500GB's also. I plan to use one of the 500GB's for Super Duper clone of iMac system hard disk and the second for cloning/backing up the scratch Final Cut space. This second disk and enclosure will be my offline backup system and will not be powered all the time.
Details of the elcousre and hard disk are provided below. I purchased them in the UK. Enclosure was purchased from www.span.com and hard disk from www.ebuyer.com. Whilst span can sell disks in the enclosure you can save yourself a little money and buy seperatly from ebuyer and install yourself.
