Information (About This Mac)this Mac was purchased before OSX was released. Could it be not be formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)or possibly some other reason? It has worked well with OS9 and all the versions of OSX through OS 10.4.6 without any difficulty or software upgrades as a storage device.
1.25 GHz Dual G4 Desk Top   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

are the install disks that come with the computer limited to that specific computer? We have 2 powerbook G4s (a 15 and a 17 inch) The 15inch is giving me the trouble. It's possible that I grabbed the install disk for the 17inch.
Never used the disks before. When I insert the disk, reboot and hold the c key, the computer eventually goes to a solid blue screen without anything on it and stops.
As an experiment, I inserted the install disk in the 15, then attached the 15 to the 17 as a target. Teh 15 mounted on the 17 with the install disk mounting. I then drilled down through the install files until I go to the os install package and double clicked. It started to install but after about an hour it ended with an error message.

you can but there may be some issues and a lot of files will be saved to your c drive, anyway.

2.1 TB for certain & some 3 TB drives work if Partitioned to less than 2.1 TB but then it must be GUID instead of APM, most important is if it is SATA I 1.5Gb/sec compatible.

After installing a new hard drive can I install snow leopard directly from snow leopard disc. Or do I have to install previous versions first. iMac 7.1 (2007) 2.8ghz

You can install directly, assuming the disk is newer than your computer and not designed for a different Mac, but doing so won't install iLife.

  • Can I install windows 7 on a second internal drive on a macbook pro 2011?

Can I install windows 7 on a second internal drive on a macbook pro 2011? I have 2 500 gb. SSD drives in my 2011 MacBook Pro. My plan was to install windows 7 on the 2nd drive. I'm new at owning Macs so I have had Windows on main drive using bootcamp but I wanted to speed up my 17" Mac so I maxed out the memory and added the SSD drives.  Thinking I could put the 2 operating systems on seperate drives I bought to 2 SSD's. Is there any way to do this.  So far I have drawn a blank. Any ideas?

Yes. Just install Windows onto it without using the Boot Camp Assistant to partition it.

  • I erased my HD. Now I can't instal mountain lion from my bootable flash drive, and keep getting "installation error. Try again."

I bought  mountain lion, made a bootable flash drive.
I booted from it and it went to upgrading right away!
So I stopped it and went to my former recovery partition I erased my HD because I wanted a clean start.
Now I can't instal mountain lion from the bootable flash drive, and keep getting "installation error. Try again."
and there is no 4 choices window.
I don't know what to do.

How did you create the USB install thumb drive? If it was with Disk Utility I have run into this problem and have since used THIS program to make the USB install drive.
As to your problem you only have one option and that is to Reinstall the Original OS X version that came on your computer or if you still have the Lion Recovery Partition use that to reinstall Lion. Or if you system came with Lion and you have No Lion Recovery HD Partition you can boot the system from over the internet and Reinstall Lion.
At startup hold down the Command+Option+r keys until you saa a spinning Globe in the center of the screen. Once that loads Repartition the drive as One partition and then reinstall Lion.

ITs an old Iomega 100gb external HD that has about 90gb of music on it. The Macbook has a 500gb HD. I would like to put the iTunes library on the internal HD so I have room to expand.

You can copy it to the internal hard drive as long as it fits on it. How big is your library, and how big is your internal HD?
The only thing you do not want to do is over-stuff the internal hard drive. The OS needs some space to operate correctly, so if your iTunes library uses up more than say 80 to 85% of the internal HD's available space it may not be a good idea to transfer it over.
With that said, the internal HD will provide slightly faster access to the library than the external would, but other than that, you can point iTunes to the external drive just fine.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can, but it's a bit difficult because you have to copy the Snow Leopard disc content to a USB drive. There are a lot of pages which have got the steps to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard from the USB drive, like this page > http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html

Your can place one in a external Firewire 800 or Thunderbolt enclosure, but it's not a SSD, it's a hybrid drive that stores the most frequently used data on it's SSD part.
So since it would be a extenral drive, and you can't boot from it for long, it's a storage drive which your accessing it will be random, basically eliminating the SSD portions of it that does give you the speed.
Your better option for fast external storage is RAID 0 of 2 7,200 RPM drives, + 1 larger one where the RAID 0 is auto-cloned to it nightly, with a extra drive for the RAID 0 as a hardware replacement.
Next step up after this is a RAID 5 on Thunderblot with 5 7,200 RPM drives.
All depends what your needs are for fast external storage and how much.
The iMac is a consumer machine, it's not designed for MacPro type uses, swtich drives etc. etc.

  • Can't install OS X on 160 GB hard drive in MBP

I bought one of those perpendicular 160 GB hard drives for my MacBook Pro, and installed it. It works great, exactly as advertised, however there's one problem: both Boot Camp and the Mac OS X installer refuse to install onto the hard drive. Boot Camp gives an error, saying "Your startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. Back up your startup disk and use Disk Utility to format your startup disk as a single Mac OS Extended (Journald) volume." It is already formatted this way, and the drive (which I cloned from my 100 gb MBP drive) works great. How can I make it so Boot Camp will install? Do I need to reformat and reinstall everything? Is there any intrinsic reason why the 160 GB drive, or one cloned from another source, shouldn't work? I did repair permissions and checked the drive.

    Peter.
Hopefully you have an external firewire drive you can boot from. (Thats what I make my daily backups to). Boot from this external drive and run disk utility and make sure that the drive IS actually formatted as GUID this is the Intel HFS format. If its not you should format as the Intel partition and then re-dupe the drive from your backup.
If that doesn't fix it then there might be a BootCamp limitation on the startup volume. Its possible Apple didnt foresee this large a partition and there may be some glitch. I know when I installed my 160G drive (2 weeks ago) I forst reformatted the drive by booting from an external forewire drive and wiping the new internal drive, leting DU create the single partition and formatting in DU. I noticed that the drive was actually preformatted HFS but not the Intel version.

  • Can I install Mt Lion directly onto USB thumb drive?

I want to tryout Mt Lion without a lot of reinstalling of Snow Leopard issues. Can I just install Mt Lion onto a USB thumb drive or external HD via Firewire 800 to demo Mt. Lion and if I don't like it then I won't have to reinstall SL.

Yes, if the Thumb drive is big enough. I installed it on an External Drive myself... & went back to 10.5/10.6 for getting work done.
Also, the Installer "conveniently" erases itself after install, so to save a huge download if needed again... make a copy of it before you install.

  • Can I install Mountain Lion on a different hard drive when it's already installed on one hard drive?

I have a Mac Pro with two 2TB hard drives installed, one I use for storage, and one as my startup disk (also store things on there as well). I just installed two new 2TB drives and have set up a RAID 0 with them. I want to use the RAID drive as my start up disk, but I'm not sure if I can install Mountain Lion on the new RAID drive while it is still on the original start up drive. I also don't want to lose or erase any information from my current start up drive. Can anyone offer me guidance??

Firstly, you need to partition and format the SSD. You need to be able to boot the computer from another drive that has a bootable OS X system installed or a Snow Leopard DVD installer that works on the computer.
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
