External Firewire Drive Ceases to be Detected After DVD Drive Installation

About a week ago, I replaced the original Pioneer DVR-103 drive in my Quicksilver 800 Mhz/dual G4 with a Pioneer DVR-115 to work with newer, faster media. After restarting the machine, I got an alert that told me my 80Gb Maxtor external firewire drive wouldn't initialize. The only real option it gives me is to reformat, thus losing valuable data. That's a non-starter. I've tried restarting the machine with the new DVR unplugged, but I get the same result. I've zapped the Pram, thinking it was a dirty pram, but no go. I've reset the nvram to default, using the command line, but no luck. The odd thing is that applications (like iTunes) continue to access the music files stored on it. I need this drive. Seagate support has been worthless. Any ideas?

  • Having problems with BIOS detecting CD/DVD drive

So heres the deal.  I have a Samsund DVD/CD-rw drive and my motherboard is a MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R K8T800.  I built a complete new system.   I got everything up and running then yesterday all of a sudden my CD drive isn't being recognized.  So I check BIOS and its not being detected there either.  I checked everything, replaced cable and stuff.  Finally I was able to get it to work but I had to clear CMOS.  After clear it detected it again and everything was fine and dandy til today.  Same thing happened.  Had to clear CMOS to get to detect again.
I thought maybe my drive was bad but I don't see how clearing CMOS would fix that.  And the ONLY way I was able to get it to detect again was clearing CMOS.... sigh.  And I really don't like doing that.

    Hi
Have you tried uninstalling the drive in device manager, then letting it re install, also DVD drives often need additional drivers, which can be got from makers site.
    Cheers

When I have followed all advices what I have read here on chats I have find message:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code39)
I do not know what to do with this problem.
I will be really grateful for any help or advice what to do with it.

This is usually caused by a known software issue and happens across the board will all computer manufacturers due to a conflict with media burning/ripping applications...
You can either run this file , go online to Microsoft's site for a fix, or manually fix it by following the instructions below:
    Manually delete the registry entries
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
Note Before you use this method, uninstall all CD or DVD writing or recording programs. Deleting the corrupted registry entries might cause problems with any other CD or DVD writing or recording programs that are installed on your computer. Uninstalling these programs before you start will help you avoid any problems that removing the registry entries might cause. You can reinstall these programs after the problem is resolved.
This method provides step-by-step instructions for how to use Registry Editor to delete the following corrupted Registry entries:
    UpperFilters
    LowerFilters
Step 1: Start Registry EditorStart Registry Editor
Start Registry Editor...type "regedit" into the run box on the start menu.
Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry
In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
Expand Control, and then expand Class.
    Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click UpperFilters.
Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only.
If you see the UpperFilters registry entry in the details pane of Registry Editor, go to step 6.
If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to "Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry."
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes when you receive the following message:Are you sure you want to delete this value?
Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click LowerFilters.
Note You might see a LowerFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click LowerFilters only.
If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content is unable to help you any more. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes when you receive the following message:Are you sure you want to delete this value? The LowerFilters registry entry is removed.
    Exit Registry Editor.
    Step 4: Restart your computer
Restart your computer. After you have done this, try to access the CD or DVD drive. If you can access the CD or DVD drive, and if you do not receive an error message, the problem is resolved. You can reinstall your CD or DVD writing or recording software.

  • K7pro Bios doesn't detect my DVD drive

Hi, I'm very desapointed, so I try to contact directly the MSI home forum from France.
    I use a K7 pro (6195) since 4 years
+ AMD Athlon 600 MHz 128 Mo ram and Win 98 2nd Ed
I bought a TOSHIBA DVD driver SD M1612 a year ago
Up to today, it was detected from time to time by old Bios (1.0 ? 2003/02) and sometimes it didn't work on windows : random detection in fact !
I read in FAQ that for the same problem with an other DVD drive (HITACHI) we should upgrate the Bios.
I did it with the V1.8 version for Win 98 SE downloaded in this site.
result : the DVD drive is no more at all detected by the BIOS, and by Windows of course.
I upgrated the IDE chipset driver (AMD 756) with a file found in the AMD site : V1.43 - no change.
Please Mr "MSI" what is the right solution in order I could use normally my DVD drive with your mother board ??????
Many thanks for a right answer.
    James

I tried that and the both disk's pass the verification, the problem is the installer detecting my hard drive.
When i'm running 10.5 and try to install from the SL Disk it picks up the hard drive (but says it cannot install to this volume, use disk utility etc) - its when I restart and enter the installer via the splash menu, it fails to pick up my hard drive.
I cant see any other way of partitioning my drive to the required GUID, even when I made a seperate 20gig partition, it remains as Mac OSX Journaled on the same drive thats partition scheme is 'Apple Partition Map'.
Bootcamp will not help me either, I thought of creating a seperate partition and installing it to that, then reformatting the rest of the drive from within' SL, but Bootcamp says that it cannot modify the 'startup disk' and says it requires reformatting.
I really am stumped as to what to do next, I can't understand why the installer picks up the hard drive whilst its running, but when its in the installer it doesn't
    Help!!!!

  • Mac Mini fan at max after DVD drive install

My Core Duo Mac Mini is now driving the fan at max speed after an upgrade of the DVD drive (to an Optiarc AD-7630A). I've tried a PMU reset (though I'm not convinced it worked as the clock was still correct and I thought that a PMU reset also set the PRAM and therefore the clock: it does on my PowerBook). A temperature monitor app tells me that the various CPU temperatures are between 30 and 40 Celcius. Until now, I've never heard the fan come on so hard: not even when encoding video and generally thrashing the CPU. All very annoying for a machine that serves my TV!

First things first, a PMU reset should never be used on an Intel Mac mini - the Intel system doesn't have a PMU, and the reset procedure actually causes problems rather than resolves them. The correct procedure is an SMC reset - it's basically the same except that importantly, you do not hold the power button in while reconnecting power.
To reset the SMC on an Intel mini:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
Thusly, perform an SMC reset on the system.
Assuming that doesn't resolve the issue, the most probable cause is that during the install of the new drive, the fan control cable was not reconnected correctly when reassembling. If that cable is not connected, the fan defaults to run at full speed since the SMC can no longer control it. You would need to open up the system again (or have your service provider do it if the drive upgrade was done by them) and check the tiny black control wire is connected properly.

  • CD Drive Door does not open after Super Drive Install

Yesterday, I installed a Pioneer DVR-109 8X DVD-R/RW Super Drive in my Power Mac G4 450 AGP Graphics. Everything seemed to fit back together just fine, but now I cannot open the drive door by pressing the button. I have to manually pull the door down and insert a paper clip to open the drive and insert a CD. Is there something I missed when putting the thing back together?
    Power Mac G4 450 Sawtooth   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Carolyn, welcome to Apple Discussions.
I had the same problem when I replaced the Apple CD/DVD drive on my G4 AGP with a drive that had write capabilities. The problem seemed to be a slight difference in the drive's front mounting dimensions. The plastic lever on the front bezel would not depress the button on the drive far enough. To fix the problem, I cut a slim section from a rubber eraser, & using masking tape, positioned the rubber spacer over the drives button. Now it works perfectly. You may have to experiment with how thick the rubber is.

  • How do I install bootcamp on the new drive that I installed with the dvd drive adapter

Hello, I have a macbook pro mid 2012 13 inch, I have just earned some money, enough to buy a SSD, and I happily went to the store and bought a samsung evo 840 120gb SSD. My plan was to clean install windows 8.1 on the SSD, I already had bootcamp on the 500GB HDD with windows 8 that came with the mac, so I backed up the important files from the windows partition. I deleted the partition, and restored it to the mac's partition (which I was going to partition again after the windows installation is complete for the storage for my windows partition) I made a installation usb with the iso I have made with bootcamp assistant, and waited. After that was done I restarted my computer holding the option key, then I booted into the EFI boot partition, and went through the process, entered the serial key, and agreed the thing, and then  when I did the format it said it couldn't do it, so I took it out put it in an external hard-drive case, then I plugged it into my windows 8 laptop, then I opened command prompt, then I typed "diskpart", then after the administrator thing popped up, I clicked yes, then in the diskpart prompt, I typed in "list disk", and my SSD was disk 1, so I did "select disk 1" then I typed "clean" Then I went into the drive manager, then a thing popped up saying which one would I choose between MBR or GPT so I selected GPT, then made a new NTFS partition on the SSD, then took it out, then I popped it back in then went through the installation, until the actual installing part where after copying files is done, this pops up "Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code 0x8007045D" So I downloaded a torrent because I had thought that this was corrupted, and downloaded a torrent from a website, and downloaded the iso, and I tried and the same error, again and again of taking out the drive from my computer to format it and putting it back in again (since there was some files made on the SSD) so I had decided that I would download a windows 8 torrent, then I did then it couldn't even start, so I want to install windows 8.1 on my macbook pro, on a separate drive in the the DVD cage (not external, internal), would there be any way to do it, please help!

  • External Firewire-HDD only works in Win7 after Reconnect

    Hello,
I use a 27" iMac with BootCamp 4.0 and Windows 7 64-bit. I connect an external HDD via the iMacs Firewire 800 port using a 9 to 4-pin cable.
This works fine, but only if I replug one of the connectors AFTER I switched the HDD on. Only switching it on take no effect; Windows explorer didn't show it!
I tried already the "OHCI-konformer IEEE 1394-Hostcontroller (Legacy)" drivers but with the same result - I alway have to reconnect the HDD every time i want to use it - gets on my nerves...
    Any solution for this?
    Thanks a lot!

Windows and FW800 never were supported and even FW400 is weak.
Thunderbolt devices are not hot pluggable and need to be present on startup in most cases.
USB3 is finding its way into Mountain Lion now that some Macs have them, and support in Windows 8, which gives more than enough bandwidth for any hard drive and most SSDs.
You can try a rescan in Storage in Computer Management.
eSATA and USB3 (and of course USB2) work fine with recognizing.

  • C: Drive won't show up after Bootcamp 5 installation

I recently re-installed Windows on to my MacBook Pro (Mid 2011) and in the process of installing some programs I've noticed that the C: drive isn't showing up when I go to My Computer (Windows 8).  The strange thing is that before I installed Bootcamp 5 I was able to see the drive and my eject key worked fine.  I read through the FAQs and support for Bootcamp 5 and it says to reinstall the keyboard driver - which I've done - but I don't think this is helping any.  Keyboard works fine, but the drive is still not showing.  Before I reinstalled Windows on my machine, the drivers were working fine, though if I remember correctly, I ran Bootcamp v4 and then upgraded to v5 when that came out.
Is there a specific driver I should look into reinstalling?
Thanks and I apologize if this is a common question and has been answered, I searched for a similar issue and couldn't find anything.

  • External Firewire HD won't mount after Connecting to B&W w/ bad Firewire

I've tried and tried to find the answer, so finally I post...
I've had two external Firewire Laptop HD enclosures become unmountable after hooking them up to a 400 Mhz powermac G3. This has been 6 months apart. I used to use the Powermac B&W ... I know the Firewire worked at one time, but cant remember if it was before or after I added a Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card.
After clean installing... 10.3.2 .... no Classic... I hoped it would wake up the Firewire, did not. So hooked up the external HD to the USB.... it worked. Then, went to the eMac and via Firewire hooke up the same external HD.... it worked.... for 2 hours. Disconecceted, reconnected and like the other one...... no more mount. Not in classic, not on any comuter. If I daisy chain it to another Firewire external, the About this Mac no longer recognizes info on either. Once removed, the computer recognized the info the good one. Disk Utilities does not recognize harddrives in the enclosure... I put a different HD inthe enclosure.. still not mounting
It spins and receives power.... but no mount. Is this firmware? The hard drive is not corrupted... I put it into a mac mini and was able to extract the info... but what has caused this B&W's fire wire to go, and caused 2 of my externals to go as well....
    Help.

try the following to reset the ports:
    1) zap PRAM - reboot holding down Cmd-Opt-P-R and left the machine boot cycle 3-4 times
    2) reset Open Firmware
    reboot holding down Cmd-Opt-O-F
    at the screen type <reset-nvram</i>
    press Return
    type reset-all
    press Return
    3) disconnect ALL devices from the computer
unplug the computer from the wall
let it sit for 10-15 minutes
    plug back in and reboot

  • Duplicate boot drive to external firewire

I have an 320GB OS drive that has a 10.4.8 install on it.
I need to upgrade it to 10.4.9 for FCS2, but 10.4.9 is incompatable with my version of ProTools, so I wanted to literally duplicate my OS drive to a external firewire. Here's my Q:
The OS Drive only has... ~100GB or so in use, and the external drive is 160.
Even though it would fit, can I actually boot off of DVD and copy the OS to the external if the total disk size is smaller than the OS drive? If not, is there a way to do it by just copying files (some sort of unix command)

    Download Carbon Copy Cloner
    http://www.bombich.com - version 2.3
Or head over to http://www.macupdate.com and download.
No need to boot from DVD.
You can also use Apple Disk Utility -> Restore.
