External Firewire drive does not mount on desktop now.

Greetings everyone.
G5 dual, 4.6GB ram, OSX 10.4.10, external firewire drive, formerly worked fine, now is invisible.
Not the drive. New purchase, worked fine until a restart. Not the cable. Power is getting from the G5 to the firewire drive. Not the port. I also have a firewire card instlaled so I have three ports to connect it to (and two on the FW drive). No combination works. Not the computer, the FW drive also fails to appear on an iBook. Not the OS. I did a clean install to make sure.
I'm not a newbie. I know what I'm doing. Until now! DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, Drive Genius and Apple's Disk Utility cannot see the drive.
The FW drive is a Powerbook internal HD inserted into a case, purchased seperately.
At my wits' end. Can anyone help please.

I am suddenly having this EXACT problem. I have two Firelite firewire drives (one 60G and one 80G) that are suddenly refusing to mount on my older dual 1.25GHz G4 tower. They are also suddenly refusing to mount on my non-intel iMac. They will both mount painlessly on my new Intel MacBook Pro, but that's not much use, since the point of the firewire drives is to transfer files between these computers. I'm updating all of them to 10.4.10 to see if that's the issue...

  • External Hard Drive does not mount

My 2TB external hard drive does not mount and I cannot get it to.  Have tried turning the hard drive off and then back on.  No response.  Any thoughts as to how I can get it to be recognized?

You can try doing a SMC reset, if it doesn't work the first time it's totally OK to reset the SMC several times.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • External Drive does not mount on desktop

    Hi,
I did a Leopard upgrade and most everything went smoothly. But when I boot, Leopard pops up a window telling me that a disk I inserted is unreadable (it took me a time or two to realize it WAS referring to my USB 2.0 external hard drive).
It gives me the option to ignore, initialize or eject. Thus my hard drive won't mount on my desktop. It DOES show up in Disk Utility, however, so maybe there is hope.
So what are my options? Am I looking at burning DVDs all day so I can re-initialize or reformat this drive for Leopard?
I appreciate any help, and I did a lot of searching on this topic, so I'm aware that there may not be any solutions as of yet.
    Many Thanks, Frank B.

Hi Andre, I can't remember except to say that it was mounting fine with tiger and I was able to copy files to it for backup purposes.
I just hooked it up to a PC and windows tells me the drive is not formatted. That's not a good sign, and this was stupid: I think I had the drive hooked up to my Mac Pro during the upgrade.
Idiotic, granted. But this was an upgrade, not a full install and I maybe was trusting in Apple's ability not to do extraneous stuff during an install like windows does. Oh well...
I appreciate any further ideas. Many Thanks, Frank.

  • External Hard drive will not mount on desktop

I have a 17" Powerbook G4 that has replaced a broken iBook G4. I've been using a Western Digital MyBook Pro Edition as a secondary drive for my multimedia as well as my iTunes Library. It worked fine on the old iBook.
When I plug it into the Powerbook, using either USB2 or Firewire 800, it will not mount to the desktop. It DOES however appear in the System Profiler as "External HD Button and Lights". The drive is formatted for FAT32 and works fine on my Windows XP desktop machine, so I know the drive functions mechanically. A different hard drive, a Maxtor mounts to the desktop fine using USB2, so it isn't a bus issue.
This is driving me nuts. I LOVE this computer, but I have WAY more invested in music than the cost of the computer.
    Thanks in advance.

It took a while to figure it out but apparently there was a conflict with bluetooth. I disabled it and all is well.

  • External hard drive does not mount after sleep

I am using a brand new Seagate 2 TB external hard drive for my backup drive.  More often than not, when the computer goes to sleep, the icon for the drive is gone from the desktop when the computer wakes up.  I have to unplug it from the computer and reconnect it, then it mounts and works fine.  I have it plugged directly into the computer's USB port.  The drive uses USB3.  As far as I can tell, it does not exceed the power requirements of the USB port.  It is the only external hard drive I am using at the moment.
I should note that the same thing was happening with my last hard drive.  That was a Western Digital 250 GB drive with an independant power source connected by firewire.
I am running OS 10.6.8 on an Intel circa 2009 iMac.  My external drives worked fine for years, and it seems in the last year or so is when this started happening.

Another point of note is that both the HD and the keyboard are connected to the iMac through a 7 port USB hub.
I think this might be the issue. If the iMac is waking back up, it will likely be waking up this HUB, but the HUB might not be re-initialising the connection between OS X and the external drive or the keyboard.
After waking the iMac, if you unplug the external drive from the HUB, then plug it back in again, does OS X pick it up again? Have you tried plugging the external drive directly into the iMac and then testing what the result is?
If you read back on what you've said, you pointed out that you have a USB mouse that you use to wake the iMac from sleep. Is this mouse directly connected to the iMac? If so, it surely can't be a coincidence that a directly connected USB device can wake the iMac from sleep, but any USB devices connected to the iMac via a USB HUB cannot.
I would suggest you test the drive as it is directly connected to the iMac. I would complete the same test with the keyboard too. I think you'll find it's the USB HUB.
    I hope this helps.

  • Fat32 External Hard Drive does NOT mount on Windows XP Pro under boot camp

I have a gateway 160gb portable external HDD. When it came pre-formatted in NTFS. It mounted on Windows XP under boot camp or Vmware Virtual machine very well.
I then formatted it under HFS+ to use it with superduper.
Now that I want to convert it back to NTFS. I formatted it under Fat32 so that windows can recognize it and I can format it again under NTFS.
The drive mounts fine on Mac OSX leopard but not on Windows XP (bootcamp or Vmware VM). Could someone help? I need this drive to be under NTFS so that I can store work related files which can only be run on Windows and some of the files are larger than 4gb.
    Thank you

Under Disk Utility>Partition select anything other than 'Current' under 'Volume Scheme', then the format field will light. However, you should have been able to format under Windows Disk Management once it was online. See:

  • External Hard Drive does not mount after connecting to airport

    Hello,
I tried finding a solution to this problem already, but people that posted were having issues seeing the drive connected to the airport, while I am having the opposite problem.
After I tried connecting my USB drive my new airport extreme and it worked there and I tested speed and whatnot, I disconnected it and plugged it back into my iMac and now it will not show up anywhere, and will only show up when connected to the airport.
Basically I want my drive that was connected to the airport to connect to my mac again because it is not working.

To clarify, when you connect that drive directly to your iMac it doesn't appear on the Desktop? Do you have Finder preferences set (in the General tab) to show "External disks"? Do you see the drive in Disk Utility?

  • External Drive does not mount with Firewire but is ok with USB !

Since 10.4.4 my external drive is no more recognized using firewire, but it mounts perfectly with USB
Using FW request me to reinitialize the disk, but then, the apple disk utility it is unable to reformat!
then I unplug FW , sets USB and everything is ok!
I connected the drive to my old IMac G4 700 and evrything is fine, FW and USB, using the same drive, using the same cable. I did repeat the test many times it is always ok with the old mac and it never mounts with FW on my newer Ibook.
I did reset the openfirmware but that was not successfull!
Then I brought both iBook and the faulty Drive to a friend (he owns a powerbook and also an external drive)
we verified that my drive does not mount on his powerbook G4 12" using FW and is ok with USB.
Then he tried his external drive and was very surprised to find the same fault with his drive and his PB using FW. (as for me everything is ok with USB!)
We are both very puzzled, our drives did work well before, (before 10.4.4 , and 10.4.5 did not improve!)
and now, with firewire, disks never mounts..
In addition I tried with the same cable to alternatively start, using the target mode, the ibook and the imac. For each test they were both recognized as external drives as they should..
So to try to sum up
    - Disk mount ok with USB (1 or 2)
    - Disk is no more recoknized with FW (but it was before with the exact same hadrware)
    - FW Cable seems to be ok as targuet mode works properly
    has anybody any idee?
It would be very munch appreciated..
thanks a lot for having read this long post..

  • My external hard drive does not show up on my desktop

My external hard drive does not show up on my dest top but, does shows in my Windows (vmware fusion) end although I can't see it ob my desktop but, I can eject it properly like any external drive. I have connected it to my windows and ejected properly (per the suggestion of someone on this forum) but, it still doesn't show on my Mac. I see the blue light and hear it running though. I have looked for it in disk utility but, still can find it. I have changed the cable and it still did not show on my Mac. I connected another external drive  and that showed up on my desktop.Any help????

if it is NTFS then you need Paragon Software NTFS for Mac.
NTFS volumes are suppose to be read only but in practice external drives don't always mount or work.
If it is not NTFS then you need more details. Need more anyway.
PS: this is not a MacBook area, it is Mac 65lbs tower related forum.

  • External Hard Drive won't mount on desktop!

    Hey, guys.
I ran into a problem this morning that I've never ran into before and I wasn't sure where to write it but I thought this is best.
    Here it goes...
Last night I had a power surge and when I restarted my computer, my external hard drive did not mount on my desktop. I than proceeded with restarting my computer, I relinked all my connections and I cant seem to get it fixed. I have a lot of material on my external drive that I dont have backed up (I know, a stupid move) anyways, I dont want to lose that information. Also, when I open up disk utility, the icon for my external drive is there and the partition I made for my external drive shows up also but the title of my partition for my external hard drive is not in bolded font. I tried to click the button to mount my external drive cause the specs tell me that it is not mounted but when I press the mount button, it does nothing. I than tried clicking the unmount button and than restart my computer and still nothing.
What problem am I facing and how can it be fixed?
    Thanks.

    Dear Jason,
Gary's advised is, IMHO, a very sound one.
The only thing I can think of about your problem, given the information you have provided us, is to run Disk Warrior on your external HD.
In fact, DW is particularly indicated in events, like:
"...you should run DiskWarrior when you suspect that there is directory damage on one of your disks. Directory damage can result in the disk not mounting (not appearing on the desktop when the computer is started), missing files or folders, an inability to move or copy files, or crashes when files are used...".
You could actually buy your copy of DW Licence on-line and download it directly onto your internal HD, starting from this "Information you must read before you make your purchase" page. A hardware copy of the software you have so purchased, will follow by postal service (or currier, if so you choose), shortly.
Follow all the instructions you will find in the download to install the DW software onto your main internal HD and then run it on your external hard drive.
DW has saved my data several times and in similar situations as you are experiencing. IMHO, you should seriously give it a try and, even in the unfortunate event it does not manage to solve your problem, it is one of those Mac OSX utilities which ANY Mac power user MUST have handy at all times.
So, no matter what, my opinion is that it is always well-spent-money those used to purchase your copy of DW: in the long run, you won't regret it.
In the event that even DW is unable to retrive your precious data, my suggestion is to contact Micro Com data recovery. It's going to cost you some money, but if you make a leaving out of the data you've lost on your external hard drive, it's going to be worth it.
    All the best.
    Costa

  • Firewire drive will not mount

Firewire drive will not mount USB mounts fine.

It's nearly impossible to offer any help given the dearth of information you provided.
What Mac are you using? What external FireWire hard drive are you trying to use? Is it a FW-400 or FW-800 interface? Have you tried any other FireWire device with that computer? Have you tried that FireWire drive with any other computer?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
The drive's directory is damaged and as you found Disk Utility isn't equipped to repair it. You need Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro.

  • External hard drive does not shut down

Hello, When my mini mac goes to sleep my samsung external hard drive does not shut down or dismount properly. when i wake computer i have a error message stating improperly ejected hard drive. It also does not reconize HD until I disconnect and reconnet??? PLEASE HELP Thank you

My Mini was doing the same thing until I reset the PRAM. With four external drives. They would stop inadvertently with an "improperly ejected" error. Granted two of the drives went bad (6 and 7 years old) but a brand spanking new Seagate and a 3 year old Hitachi drive doing the same. Haven't seen the error since resetting the PRAM.
If you don't know how to do that, Reboot while holding the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys until your hear the startup chime three times and then release the keys.
