I had this problem too with my G5 (PPC) and brand new Mac Book.
Both of my computers were given the same local subnet address. To change this go to System Preferences > Sharing > Computer Name, you'll see an "Edit" button, click on it and change the name or add a "2" to the end of the name before ".local"
I guess what is happening is both computers are using the same local subnet and your macbook isn't being recognized.
Mine works fine now, hope this has helped you!

  • External Firewire Drive not Mounting

Hi, I've been searching these forums but can't find an aswer to my question. I just got a new 27" iMac, and purchased a Thunderbolt-to-Firewire adapter. I have 3 external Firewire drives, two of which are DC powered (the third, I understand, might be a lost cause, as it's bus powered, and I gather the bus power from TB won't power Firewire drives). At any rate, I'm not seeing either of the DC powered drives showing up, which is a big concern as I have about 5TB of stuff on them!
Any reason these wouldn't show up, either in the Finder or Disk Utility? Much thanks for any help!

Hi - did you ever resolve the dropouts? I have a new iMac purchased in Q1 2014 and connect my G-Grive to it via the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter. My iMac runs 24x7 and this connection drops out on a regular basis - I'd say maybe once every week or so. I have a slightly newer USB3 G-Drive which is connected by the USB socket next to the TB socket on my iMac.
I cannot tell if it is a software issue or a physical (cable movement issue), the plug has never been out and I can't deliberately disconnect it at will by wobbling the cable/plug. So, evidence and experimentation suggests the physical connection is not the issue. This problem has only come about after switching from a physical FW800 connection (my old iMac) to working via a TB adaptor (my new iMac).

  • External Firewire Drives not mounting but shown in Disk utlilty

Well the title says it all!
I can see my ibook in target mode on my new macbook in disk utlity but not in finder!
I want to copy over my documents folders (I have tried migration assistant but it can't see the mounted drive either!).
It works fine the other way (i.e viewing the macbook in target mode on the ibook)
    Details:
    Macbook 2.2GHz (new model) 10.5.1
    Help!

Is the Mount or Unmount button greyed out in DU when you highlight the Firewire icon? If you can click the Mount one, do so. If you can click the Unmount one, check the Prefs in the Finder menu to make sure that you are showing attached drives.

  • 2 different brand USB external hard drives not mounting- Firewire ok

Hi, first timer here so apologies in advance.
i have to different brand external hard disks and they both show up fine with a firewire connection. the trouble is that i need to use the usb connection and neither show up. (shows up in system profiler though but not disk utility.) why USB if i can use Firewire? I will be using the disk to connect to a Wii console via usb port and the Wii is not recognizing either disk either?
Any ideas on how to get one of these disks to mount by USB?
cables are fine as work with USB only hard disks.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Bob,
    Thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately it does not show up at all in "disk utility". But appears in System Profiler under USB. This is true of 2 different external hard drives that mount fine with the firewire cables. One is a 3.5 inch and the other is a 2.5 inch portable. The USB cable is not faulty as tested it with another USB peripheral. Now a big believer in coincidences. Am i doing something wrong?
    any other thoughts?
    thanks again

  • External hard drive not mounting - what's happening?

All of a sudden one of my external firewire drives is not mounting, but that's not all....
it's not showing up in disk utility, not showing up in system profiler, not showing up on desktop, not showing up in finder, not showing up in Disk Warrior, and not showing up in TechTool.
When I turn on the power, it seems to spin up but doesn't mount. No usual noises either.
Could it be a faulty controller board on the enclosure?
    Any suggestions?
Really hope to figure this out, cause it has my entire itunes collection (500gb) on it.
    Thanks in advance.

First, try another FW drive or device in your computer to be sure that FW is working.
If you have more than one FW port, try the drive in it.
    Change FW cable.
Try the external HD on another Mac (do not use a PC!!!)
If none of above works, it's most likely the logic card in the enclosure, and not the external HD. I believe your data are OK.

  • External Hard Drive not mounting on bootup

I have a USB2.0 Hard Drive formatted with ntfs, which holds my music. I have an fstab entry for it using ntfs-3g and I can mount it fine after booting up. But the drive doesn't automatically mount like it should. It looks like the system is mounting the fstab entries before it is finished detecting my external drive. Anything I can do to fix this?

fwojciec wrote:I let my external ntfs drive be mounted by hal - I have no entry for it in /etc/fstab.  In order to have it mounted with read/write privileges I had to create a hal policy like this wiki page describes: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HAL … ntfs-3g.29
I'm not sure if this solution is what you're looking for though...
I actually tried using hal to do it and it didn't work right for some reason.

  • FIREWIRE DRIVES NOT MOUNTING OR BEING RECOGNIZED

After a recent software update, I cannot get my 3 external Firewire HDs to mount or even be recognized. Often in the past I needed to mount the drives via Disk Utility, but they were are always recognized.
I've had this problem before – usually after software updates – but I've been able to resolve it... up until now.
Here are the steps that used to work either alone or in combination:
    • Restart (duh)
    • Run Cocktail and/or repair permissions
    • trash com.apple.ats.plist and com.apple.bezelservices.plist (for some reason I no longer have com.apple.ats.plist in my preferences)
    • disconnect all externals, shut down for a while, restart and reconnect
I was able to mount one of my drives via USB (slow), but the others are Firewire only.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    external hard drive not mounting

I fixed mine by uninstalling the software that came with the harddrive such as Tuxera and reinstalled it now myharddrive works again and i did not have to delete the harddrive and reformat it.
I tried a lot like reseting the Pram And connecting other harddrives but by unstalling the original software it works all over again. I hope this works for you because i was getting pretty frustrated myself.

  • 10.4.7 & FireWire drives not mounting

    Hi everyone,
since this morning my trusted LaCie FW HDs won't mount, are not seen in System Profiler and Disk Utility.
I tried almost every thing I could find, resetting vram, pram, powering everything down, waiting, disconnecting all the cables, powering back up, connecting one after another, etc. - no changes.
Every application runs fine. Except, of course, Logic because I have all my sounds and song projects on these drives.
My system.log continues to say every second again:
...-Computer kernel[0]: AppleFWOHCI_AsyncTransmit::waitForDMA - context not going inactive.
    The console.log repeats:
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] attempt to make FSSpec for "121-210.cypress" failed -120\n
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] attempt to make FSSpec for "210.cypress" failed -120\n
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] found no firmware to load for 210\n
Does anybody know what these logs mean?
Is anybody else having this problem with 10.4.7?
I started a similar thread on A-S-D- Installation and Setup, only to find out, that a lot of people there are experiencing the same issue (FW drives not mounting, not showing).
    Would resetting the PMU help?
    Please help, I can't work

Back from the mysterious world of HDs, so easy to solve..., sometimes...
I tried the HDs on my friends older PB and all was fine.
Resetting my computers PMU did not solve the problem, after I tried everything else.
    I refrained from reinstalling 10.4.7.
All other applications (but Logic, because I could not access my files) were running smooth.
Going back to 10 a.m. yesterday, basically starting over, there was one thing I missed checking (being human): the AC to DC converters supplied by LaCie for their drives.
See, they are under my desk, like out of sight...
Voilá! Individual testing revealed, that the AC/DC converter for the first LaCie drive in my chain did not spin up any of my other six LaCie drives, which I never run all at the same time, but they still have their own power supply.
Changed power supply on the first HD and now I am back to the fast speed and glitch free system I love. Back to enjoying work as well
What a day. And I am very sorry, that I was implying to blame 10.4.7 for this. My PB has never been faster

  • Lacie firewire 800 external hard drive not mounting in mac os 10.4.8

I have a pm g5 Dual 2ghz system ,i have connected an firewire 800 lacie 1tb external hard drive to the system, now the problem is it is not mounting on the desktop shows in the diskutility repaired the disk say's disk volume ok any way to mount the external hd on the desktop

Hi Veena, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
And you've tried choosing the volume and pressing the "Mount " icon on the tool bar of Disk Utility?
Have you shut down your Mac and disconnected your firewire cable from both ends and let it sit about ten minutes then reconnect and try. Also, it is important to disconnect the AC power to your Mac, this helps to reset the FireWire port(s).
Do you have TTP or DW, both of which you could use to try to mount it.
It is also possible that you have a bad cable or a bad port, do other FW devices work?

  • Please help... External Hard Drive not mounting

Hello, Please help me if you can:
I have all of my data backed up onto a Seagate External Hard Drive, purchased just a few months ago. I just got a new laptop (MacBook Air) and need to get my data off of my hard drive, but it isn't showing up on my Desktop or Finder. It shows up in Disk Utility, but when I ask it to "repair" it says:
    "Invalid B-tree node size
The volume could not be verified completely.
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
The problem started after I added some data to it - I accidentally unplugged the Drive without Ejecting first. The next time I plugged it in it allowed me to view my files but not add anything else to the Drive, and now when I plug it in it doesn't even appear. I am running Lion.
I would be happy to back up the files as it says, but as it doesn't show up anywhere I can't find the files to access. Can anyone help me find a way to get the files off of the disk, or fix the disk so that it is readable?

Hi, Brian, and welcome to the Discussions!
You might perhaps launch System Profiler (from Applications/Utilities) and see if the device is listed there under the FireWire heading in Hardware Overview.
Can you hear the LaCie spin up when powered on?
You might download the free trial version of Data Rescue II and launch it to see if it recognizes the drive. This software often does when DW or Disk Utility won't. If it does, run a scan with it to see if the data on the volume is viewable.
You can test the FireWire port with another Firewire device, or by hooking up to another Mac via a FW cable and trying to boot into FW Target Disk Mode. Visibly check the port at the Mac end first to insure that there are no bent pins at the connector (so you won't damage another device).
You can try resetting a "dead" FireWire port by shutting down, unplugging the external FireWire devices, and disconnecting the Mac's power cord for thirty minutes or so. Before doing this, run Disk Utility's Repair Permissions process on the startup volume first, to see if that corrects it.

  • After updating to 10.4.6, external firewire drives wont mount consistantly

I have a swappable external hard drive casing that has two slots. Since updating to 10.4.6, the drives will randomly dissapear from the desktop, then will not remount. It takes a lot of swapping firewire cables around, usually ending up with the same configuration and multiple reboots to get them back. Even then, I can't depend on them to stay mounted. I have had this problem infrequently in the past, though not recently. This last update seems to have resurrected the ailment. Any guesses?
    Thanks mac people.

I'd find out if the Firewire bridge needs a firmware update. I'd also try changing Firewire cables. See this FAQ:

  • HELP! Firewire drives not mounting after crash

So I had two FW400 drives daisy-chained together. I was exporting a quicktime while simultaneously compressing another QT in Compressor. Apparently, too much for my computer to handle and I got the spinning ball of death. Nothing would force quit. So I had to shut down by holding down the power button. Restarted and neither drive will mount, daisy-chained nor individually. I plugged in a 3rd FW drive and it mounted fine, so I'm guessing it's not my Firewire Bus or PRAM or something internal to my computer.
Is it possible to fry these drives? Hope not as I have a lot of media on them.

Phew. I’m not sure what happened, but I ran the Disk utility from the Installer disc and no repairs were necessary. But while at it, one of the drives mounted. Then I power cycled the other drive and that one came online. So looks like I’m in the clear!
...Although, now FCP won't launch. The load window appears and the last thing I see is "Loading Audio Filters".

  • External FireWire Drive Stops Mounting

    Friends,
I did quite a bit of searching on this, and didn't find any answers. I have a 160 GB external FireWire that suddenly won't mount on my eMac, running the latest OS X. I store all my music and all my photos and videos on the drive. I can see it in Disk Utility still, but can't Repair or Verify (those buttons are grayed out). I can also see it in the System Profiler. The only thing I can't do, is mount it, or read it from my eMac.
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Greg

    Hello Andy,
    Thank you for your help.
    1. The drive just stopped working one day. I didn't do any upgrades, it just stopped working.
    2. I don't remember the brand of the drive, or the enclosure. I could probaby find it in my records, but I bought them separate. From what I understand, the enclosure does have an Oxford chipset.
    3. I have never updated the drivers/firmware. I saw there is an Oxford 922 update on VersionTracker.com, but I am not sure if I should try it. Should I?
One more development. I bought DiskWarrior in hopes of using it on the drive, but it doesn't see the FireWire hard drive at all. According to their text support, the partition is not showing, which is why the DiskWarrior can't see it. Does that many a difference in what I am dealing with here?
    Thanks again,
    Greg
