External Firewire HD cannot be opened since Mavericks crashed
Mavericks crashed mysteriously, nothing got it rebooted, since no combo update is available I tried the entire list of Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs, nothing. So I rebuilt from <control-R> OS X Recovery System which allowed reinstallation of Mavericks and restore from Time Machine on and external hard drive. Upon the first successful reboot of my restored system, one of my other external drives wont allow me to access it, giving the system error:
The folder “≠≠≠≠≠≠” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents. (≠≠≠≠≠≠ is drive name). Root login and <control-I> to change permissions, even checked ignore ownership and "apply tp enclosed items.
Also tried advanced User and Groups update as documented elswhere. Hopefully, you may have a suggestion on this delema?
Thank you in advance.

Boot from external Firewire Drive-cannot repair or optimize internal drive.
Hi all
Connected my new 300 GB Seagate External Firewire Hard Drive today.
Installed Tiger from DVD. Updated to 10.4.3.
Installed Tech Tool Pro 4. Updated to 4.1.1.
Booted from External Firewire Drive.
Disk Utility cannot Verify or Repair internal drive. Does not say or do anything.
Tech Tool Pro cannot repair volume or optimize. Says, "Cannot Unmount Volume."
Is there a fix for this?
Thank you for the help!
Jeff
eMac 800 nVidia. Mac OS X (10.4.3) 160 GB Internal HD. Pioneer Superdrive. 1 GB RAM.Hi
I did name the new external completely different from the internal.
After booting from the external Firewire Hard Drive, I tried running Disk Utility and Tech Tool Pro from both drives. No matter which drive I run the Utilities from the same things happen every time...
Nothing happens when trying to use Disk Utility to Verify Volume on internal eMac Drive.
Tech Tool Pro says, "Cannot unmount volume" when trying to check Volume or Optimize internal drive. -
Adobe Acrobat Pro crashes on open since Mavericks update
since installing mavericks, i am unable to open adobe acrobat. to be really specific, the app itself starts, but crashes immediately when attempting to open a PDF file.
the text of the problem report is pasted below. any assistance would be appreciated. i read & create PDFs on a daily basis, so i very much need acrobat to work!
also, if i can just vent for a quick second... this OS doesn't seem to be fully baked. i'm surprised that apple would have released mavericks in such a state. i've had no issues (of the magnitude that i'm encountering with mavericks) with previous OSs, and would like to know if there's ANY way i can roll back to mountain lion until mavericks is more stable. seriously, i remember experiencing similar disappointments like this when upgrading a windows OS, but never osx.
here's what my system looks like:

This seems to be a licensing failure to me.
Please try the following steps and let me if that worked or not.
Delete all the files from following folders:
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\SLStore
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\SLCache
And, delete all files from following folder except cache.db
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\ Adobe PCD
Then launch Acrobat, Accept EULA and enter the serial number again and check.

Make sure your Office Applications are in your Applications folder and have not been moved elsewhere or the update will not find them.

Older iphoto on external hard drive won't open in Mavericks os
I have my iphoto on an external hard drive that I would open on two different computers. I recently upgraded my imac to Mavericks and now I can't open the library stored on the external HD; it's indetectible. When I click iphoto icon on the imac, the existing (internal hard drive) library opens. I *believe* before the upgrade I had to choose which library to open, but it was such an intuitive process I can't remember exactly what or if I had to do anything specific now. The library still functions fine on my macbook air, which is running iphoto 9.2.3.
Can I upgrade the iphoto on the external hard drive?? I've been reading tons of threads but haven't found a solution that sounds like it fits my issue. and of course i'm hesitant to just try anything as I don't want to lose all the photos (and I like how they're organized).
Thanks for any advice! So can i update the library on the external HD so that it can be used with 9.5.1??
Probably - I'm still not totally clear on what you ahe, what you have done and what yu are doing
this statement is worrysome and more information is certainly needed
I recently upgraded my imac to Mavericks and now I can't open the library stored on the external HD; it's indetectible.
and
If I update the MBA to Mavericks with the EHD attached will the iphoto be updated to 9.5.1??
If you also update iPhtoo to version 9.5.1 on the MBA then both computers can access the 9.5.1 iPHoto library while the EHD is connected to them

Cannot access Facebook since Mavericks upgrade
Since I updated my Snow Leopard to Mavericks about a month ago, I've been unable to access Facebook through Safari, Google Chrome, or any other browser. However, I'm still getting Facebook message notifications via the notification centre.
I am very confused as to why Facebook is simply not loading when every other site is working fine.
Any ideas?I also have the same problem until now after upgrading to Mavericks. I cannot access Facebook on all browsers. Have done the following:
- cleared cache, etc.
- uninstalled and reinstalled all browsers (except Safari)
- reset all browsers.
Please help. Thanks! -
ABS shows external HD but cannot mount/open HELP SOMEONE!!!
I have an external HD connected to ABS. Whenever I click to mount in Finder by clicking the folder, it says "The operation cannot be completed because the original item for (HD name) cannot be found".
Everything that I have tired:
Software up to date.
When HD connected directly, it opens without any issue.
Formatted/reformatted JHS+
Disk Utility does not see it, but in airport utility HD shows under Disks
Tried reseting all ABS setting to factory settings
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.Btw after doing some research I found this http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8199581. I don't get what the fix is... I am new to Mac can someone please write "idiot proof" directions to solving this please?
PS
So much for Apple's reputation as a hassle free operating system. At least with Microsoft, enough people owned the operating system/were having the same problem to jot down the fixes effectively for computer disabled people such as myself. -
Installed Mavericks yesterday from Mountain Lion. Everything worked OK then tried to download iPhoto and iMovie update. My laptop power dies accidentally and now App Store, Messages, Maps, iBooks won't even open (Bounce once then nothing). Also running ridiculously slow now!
Hi,
Try Rebooting the computer and holding down the CMD and R keys together to access the Recovery process.

Since upgrading (?) to Mavericks I can no longer access iTunes Store. The error message 'The iTunes Store is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later'.
Mobile devices using iOS7 do not have a problem, so it must be related to Mavericks.
This has been happening for at least three days. What is happening?

Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Pro, I have many documents, but not all, that cannot be opened in either Pages 5 or in Pages '09. The names show in my document lists, but are greyed out. They do not show any extensions, but I'm sure at seast some of them are PDFs. As I cannot open them, I am unable to try to experiment with any solutions - I am not tech savvy, but can sometimes fix things by trial and error. I have no issues with sharing documents as I have no other devices. I just want to be able to open my saved documents! Also, the documents I can open have to be persistently coaxed to open to a point that it is extremely aggravating. I am not so happy with this recent "upgrade." Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
You use Finder to find stuff. It is what you use to look at where your files are kept and to rename, move or trash them. If you double click on a file in Finder it finds the right software to open it for you.
To open particular files you use the right software for each type. Usually, but not always, the software that made the file.
Pages opens files ending in .pages. Also .txt, .rtf, and doc.
Pages 5 is the latest (but certainly not the greatest) version of Pages. It has trouble opening all sorts of files including the older Pages '09 files but it will still do it.
Unfortunately Apple has chosen for Pages 5 to also save its files as exactly the same file extension .pages despite it being a different format that can not be opened by the older Pages '09.
As we all know Apple is wise and great beyond belief and would not do something that on the face of it looks extraordinarily stupid and shortsighted. Therefore we know that it must be our fault and we are not holding the software right. Because we are bad users, we must be punished, by either having to use Pages 5 or jump through hoops to avoid using Pages 5.
If you have installed Pages 5 any .pages file (old or new) will be opened by Pages 5. If you then save the file, Pages 5 will change the file format. So don't open your files with Pages 5 and don't save them if you do.
To stop Pages 5 opening and resaving your old files, you need to drag it to the trash and empty it.
When it is no longer around to annoy you, you can go back to using Pages 09.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
Cannot Boot from OSX on external firewire drive
I recently bought a seagate hardrive and installed it in an external firewire casing. I partitioned it into two partitions, and installed osx 10.4.10 on one of the partitions, the same as is running on my Ti Book.
I tried selecting the os on the firewire drive as the startup disk, but when i restart, after the grey screen i get the flashing question mark icon, until the mac recognises only the default osx on the internal drive and boots with that instead.
That not working, i created a clone of my startup disk using DejaVu in my system preferences and saved it on the other, empty partition on the external drive and tried booting from that.
On restarting, i get the grey screen once again as the backlight fires up, and nothing more. the screen remains grey without any further ado until i hold the power button and force it to turn off. then as i start it up again, up comes the flashing question mark icon followed by a boot from the internal drive.
Any Solutions on this?
Many Thanks, Neptune.Hi Dale,
Whoops- everythings not as smooth as i thought it was!
since i restored my internal drive, a lot of things have been really messed up, starting with, for example, iTunes reverting to version 4 instead of 7. that wasnt a problem, i still had the 7 installer, and soon had my whole music library back again. but the computer appears to have a problem with the handling of graphics. the finder wont create previews of even simple jpeg images, nor will it for video. quicktime wont open any video file, i get some random error message which i cant remember stating it could not open the file. and if i view my finder window in grid icon view, the usual blue mac os desktop image that i keep as a background in the finder window isnt there, instead its pitch black. same goes for the slideshow feature in the application graphic converter, i can start a slideshow and it will scroll through the images, but every image will instead be completely black. there are no scroll bars in itunes. i can scroll down randomly by clicking where the scroll bar should be, but there is nothing visual there at all, no scroll bar, no arrows. when i connect my ipod, the main ipod window of itunes wont display any graphics either, be it the picture of the ipod or the capacity bar indicating usage of the drive for music, videos, data, etc. instead, fine print says something similar to 'cannot display image, quicktime and lzw tiff decompression plugin (?) required' I cant remember word for word what it says, dont quote me on that.
the computer also came to a dead freeze twice in ten minutes, i had to hold the power button down to get it to shut off.
im sure there are other issues too which i havent yet noticed, but even these, i havent the faintest clue what could be causing them!

Can't open external Firewire disk after upgrade to Leopard
I recently upgraded a PowerBook G4 from 10.4.11(?) to 10.5.5. Now I cannot open its external disk, a LaCie 400 GB Firewire disk, model number 300925, like this: http://www.amazon.com/Lacie-400GB-7200Rpm-Firewire-300925/dp/B00066989Mreport
The disk's icon appears on the desktop after it is plugged in. After double clicking to open it, the pinwheel cursor spins for a while, then Finder appears to restart, redrawing the desktop. When I have the Activity Monitor open during this, I see a process called ReportCrash run for a while before the Finder reset.
Does anyone recognize this symptom? Is there a way to see what is being reported by ReportCrash? The Genius was skeptical that this was a problem between Leopard and a given disk. Indeed his first test was to boot my laptop from a clean install of Leopard on his own external FireWire drive. Running this way I had no problem opening my external disk from my laptop, running his fresh copy of OSX 10.5.something.
His theory was that something leftover in my configuration files (in /Library/Preferences) from a previous OS was causing the Finder crash while opening a FireWire disk under Leopard. (Since this machine is four years old, there has been a lot of opportunities for kruft to collect.) His suggestion was do a backup (complicated by the fact that I can't open my backup disk, d'oh!) then to do a clean install of Leopard, and then copy back my user folder.
I wish there was a smaller hammer I could use, like setting aside some magic .plist file... Any hints? -
Cannot preview on external firewire device
I just recently upgraded from Premiere Pro CS3 to CS4. Since doing so I cannot seem to get my video to display on my external firewire device. I have a Sony GV-D900 deck that I use for preview while I'm editing.
Has something changed in CS4 that would cause this not to work? If I bring up a project in CS3 the video appears instantly on the firewire deck but with CS4 I get nothing. I've checked the preferences and the two applications appear to be setup with the same options.
Has anyone else had a similar problem?Everything seems to be setup correctly. I forgot to mention that I can capture and manipulate the deck from the Capture window so it is communicating with the deck. I just cannot see the video on the deck when previewing the timeline. If I open a project in CS3 it shows up right away.
My main purpose for previewing on the deck is I have a TV attached to the A/V outputs of the deck and it allows me to view my project on the TV while I'm working on it. Very handy. I've used it in this manor since Premiere 6.0.
The fact that I can control and capture the GV-D900 from within Premiere CS4 seems to indicate everything is set ok. I just can't figure out why I cannot see the preview.
