External Flickering in 10.6.6 (LG M227WDP)

Hi, i have looked through the forums and seen a lot of people talking about screen flickering on there external monitors in 10.6.5 and then saying that the issue is gone in 10.6.6
sadly this issue started for me in 10.6.5 and still remains even after i have updated to 10.6.6
The issue only happens when i have my external monitor set to 1920x1080, i know that a simple fix to this would to just keep the resolution at 1680x1050 but this distorts images and videos and i dont see why i should have to do that when i have the ability to go higher.
I would really love it if someone could help me out with this problem or if someone on the apple team could inform me of when this will be fixed as it has been 2 updates now since it started and its not been fixed.
Thank you.

I get this flicker on both my external monitor and my internal even if I have the external disconnected.
I have an iMac with nVidia 8800GS and 10.6.6. I get flicker when running MythTV together with Flash video and certain games. Sometimes the GUI locks up altogether with this combination. Any one of them individually is fine.
If I knew which older OS release didn't have this problem, I'd downgrade.
Apple, please fix this. It's been this way for several releases of 10.6 and is extremely frustrating.

  • External Display Flickers (Intel on board)

    Hi,
I have recently made a fresh installation of Arch Linux and trying to setup it for my work environment. I made a basic installation of xfce4 with slim login manager. I wanted to hook my laptop with an external display. I used xrandr to extend my laptop display with the external display. Everything worked fine but my external display flickers insanely bad. I cannot stare at it for > 30s. I dual boot on windows, so I tested the same setup with windows and it worked just fine, out of the box. I even used one of my friend's laptop who's running ubuntu and has the same h/w. It worked out of the box. I have spent more than 8 hours trying to find out where the issue would be and miserably failed. Below are certain logs and output that might help traingulate my issue.
Its a Dell Inspiron N4030, with Intel onboard graphics. I have the xf86-video-intel driver installed and the display works perfectly fine with laptops default display.

No one? I have the exact same problem. MSI x360 laptop, intel onboard graphics. I too use xrandr. I've seen elsewhere that windows users have solved this by turning off GPU overclocking. Maybe this can point us in the right direction?

  • External Display Flickering/Blanking out on Windows 8.1 Boot Camp

OK, so I have a MBP 15" Mid-2012 model running the latest versions of Mavericks and all software and drivers on Windows are up-to-date. I am using my external display through an Active HDMI adapter for Mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt (one that broadcasts audio as well as video).
So, this adapter and image seems to work perfectly fine on the Mac side, however, when I flip the switch to Windows 8.1, the external display goes haywire and goes blank and flickers with occasional lines and static across the screen. Image comes back every few seconds and then will suddenly lose signal.
I've been reading around the internet and I've seen that this could be a hardware issue in that Intel never put support for Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort on their chipsets for Windows, not a driver issue.
How screwed am I? If not so screwed, what steps do I need to take to attain functionality of the external display while running Windows 8.1 through Boot Camp?
Note: my Mac does not come with an HDMI port already installed like current Macs. This was the last high-end Macbook Pro to have an optical drive installed on it.

From Tech specs for your machine MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012) - Technical Specifications
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory (15-inch 2.3GHz configuration) or NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory (15-inch 2.6GHz configuration) and automatic graphics switching
Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors
From the Intel downloads, there is a new driver for HD4000...
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProdId=3712
It may be worth a test.
    From Nvidia website...
    http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/77228/en-us
On a later rMBP, I can connect three displays via TB at full resolution.
One suggestion is to try a Display-miniDP cable, instead of a converted HDMI signal, if the monitor will accept a DP connection.
If it works correctly on the Mac side, it would be a driver issue, since the hardware supports it with one OS, but not the other. The effects you describe indicates that some pins on the HDMI are not getting correct signals to maintain image refresh rates or pixel sync. When you use the current connection, does the Control Panel -> Displays detect the model and name correctly? If not, the EDID detection is failing.

  • Flickering Problem in external Facing Portal

    Hey
we had some problems developing our external facing portal mainly because of general flickering of the web page ( the page height is set to automatic and it causes the borders to adjust constantly to the current content height).
we have a partial solution for this with:
    meta http-equiv="Page-Enter" content="blendTrans(Duration=.01)"
    meta http-equiv="Page-Exit" content="blendTrans(Duration=.01)"
this works just as we want, but it seems to have no effects on the first page of every new browser window. have anyone faced a problem like this before?
P.S - Our isolation method is URL and thats
    thanks

thanks for the reply , i would like to wait a bit more for similar answer to this problem. so far all the external facing portals i have seen with URL isolation method on IViews have this problem.
With my partial solution the render time looks a lot faster compared to the embedded Isolation tought.
please reply if you know why the meta tag is not working on the first time you open a page on a window
    thanks

  • External monitor flickers when waking up from sleep

I use an external monitor with my new MacBook. All works well, but I have noticed that if I start using the external after the screen has gone to sleep, I sometimes get a problem on the external where the screen flickers and breaks up. If I disconnect and reconnect the Mini DisplayPort then the problem resolves, has anyone else seen this?
    Tony

I have the same issue with my new macbook.
When i wake the computer from a partial sleep the screen flickers and i get line distortion through the image.
If i put the machine to sleep unplug the mini dvi adapter and replug it in and wake the computer up the problem disappears.
The issue is also intermittent doing about 3 times out of every 10 wake ups...
If anyone has any suggestions it would be great, I a using a new Dell 2208WFP monitor.

  • Flickering screen on external monitor

Hi, when I connect my 2011 Macbook Air to a external monitor, the screen of the external monitor is flickering. Tried different cables and monitors, same problem every time. So my guess is, that it's a problem with the hardware of my MB? Is it easy to fix, will Apple fix it when I'll bring it to the Apple Store? Actually, I can't live without my Macbook for a while, because of my work. The problem was always there, but it's getting worse and annoying, because I bought a new very expensive external monitor.

Same with my macbook pro 13" 7,1 (mid 2010) but also with resolution same or under 1080p

  • External monitor flickers when scroll on the google stock chart in Safari

Well, this sounds crazy but this is what is happening to my Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013 Macbook Pro.
    I can reproduce it.
    1. Go to this page in Safari (Version 7.1 (9537.85.10.17.1)): https://www.google.com/finance?q=LQD&ei=nQQ_VPj1H4ebrAHP6oDYDQ
    2. Scroll the page (not the chart)
    3. My external monitor starts to flicker.
I use mini display port to DVI to connect to my ASUS VE278.
    Any idea? Thanks in advance!

  • Brand new macbook pro 15" when connected to external LCD display in high resolution ,flickers often

    Hi,
I have brand new macbook pro 15" with retina display.
I have connected external LCD display (Samsung B2230) using Apple VGA adaptor & thunderbolt port. But LCD display flickers quite oftenly. I read community blogs where many macbook pro users like me are facing similiar issue.
There is no problem with LCD display as it works fine with Lenova laptops.
Can anybody please provide me the solution to this problem.?
    Regards,
    Sam

  • Macbook pro 2011 early cannot find right resolution for external display and keeps flickering

I have a macbook pro 2011 early running 10.9, and a LG FLATRON W2242T external screen. Also, I have a VGA to miniport from Apple and a VGA to HDMI, plus a HDMI to miniport(from Apple). By just connect with VGA to miniport to my MBP, it just flickers few times and stops detecting. But by connect VGA to HDMI converter and HDMI to miniport to my MBP, it keeps flickering, a non-stop flickering. The external screen always shows no signal. However, if I connect my MBP to my TV through HDMI to miniport, it works fine. But connecting the VGA port to my TV, it gets the same problem. I have tried clear my PRAM many times, and it gets the same result. Does anyone have the same problem? Thanks

Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011 external display won't work as it used while Snow Leopard, I hate you Lion so far. I cannot even Go Back!
Did you bother to backup or clone your SL installation before dumping it?

  • Flickering on DVI external monitor connected to 2009 Macbook

This is an ongoing an intermittent problem. At one point Apple phone support suggested that engineers are working on the problem but I haven't heard any updates.
The problem is with a 2009 macbook (13 inch) connected to an apple display (from 2008) by an apple minidisplayport to dvi connector. I don't find this kind of problem when another computer is connected to the display. The problem is unaffected by changing the brightness settings on the display.
The problem is intermittent, it occurs roughly once every five days. It typically occurs after the computer wakes from sleep. It doesn't usually occur when the macbook is first connected to the display (this suggests that it is not a problem with the minidisplayport to dvi cable) and jiggling the cable doesn't cause the problem or make it go away. The problem doesn't occur in particular when the computer is hot, it could be cool, after it is woken from sleep. There are no problems on the macbook's built in display.
The flickering is quite dramatic. Dark flashes extend from the bottom of the display sometimes 50% of the way up the screen and sometime 75% of the way up. The frequency is irregular but during an episode the flickers occur about once every one or two seconds, but sometimes there is a gap of 5 seconds. The episode will come to an end if I put the machine to sleep and wake it again (this also suggests that this is not a problem with the cable connection or the monitor).
It is difficult to get support on this issue. Since the problem is intermittent and may not occur for 5 days it doesn't make sense to try to reproduce it in an apple store. I called apple phone support and the technician recommended adjusting the brightness of the display, resetting the pram, moving some files that record configuration data for the external monitor. These didn't help. The technician acknowledged that apple is working on this problem and recommended that I call back if the problem recurred. I called back a couple weeks later and a technician recommended that I buy another minidisplayport dvi connector - to be frank this is an inconsiderate suggestion for a problem with end to end apple hardware - and I don't expect it to solve the problem.
How should I troubleshoot this problem, or get effective help from Apple? Is this a problem with the graphics card?

  • External LCD Monitor Flickers for 10 - 15 minutes before it settles down

I have a Lenovo 3000 N100 with a samsung syncmaster 931B as the second monitor. When I activate the monitor, it flickers for around 20 minutes before it settles down. I have the resolution set at 1280x1024 32-bit color 60hertz refresh rate.
I've had this monitor for more than one year, without any problems. I've recently updated the nVidia Ge Force 7300 video drivers on my Windows XP Pro SP2 system.
Actually, the problem is not the monitor. I can connect this monitor to a second laptop and it works fine, with no flicker.
I have PC-Doctor 5 installed and the video tests for the nVidia GeForce 7300 and the external monitor itself ran with no problems.

I have a similar issue: external Samsung monitor worked fine on Vista, but I could not stand Vista. I put Win Xp Pro on... and I cannot get any signal out through the VGA port now. The monitor works fine (still), tested with two other latptops.
My suspicion is that the nVidia driver files, possibly the .INF, may need tweaking / replacement / etc.
    Any assistance appreciated.

  • External display flickers BADLY on refresh/redraw under Mavericks

Running a mid 2008 Macbook Pro: 2GB RAM, 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, GeForce 8600M GT 512MB. Connected to a 24" Apple Cinema Display via the DVI to ADC adapter. Had been running Lion, no problem. Decided to break my own rule about jumping into OS updates and download Mavericks today. Immediately ran Software Update to apply any patches.
Screen refresh/ redraw is TERRIBLE. Endless parade of flickering and crappy redraws. Click on a folder in the Dock and you see it refreshing each scale-step of the expanding and brightening pop-up. Click on the Launcher, and you can see it redrawing the screen line by line through the animation steps and transplucency until eventually the icons show up. Safari continuously redraws the page contents, the address/search bar flickers like mad when entering information and loading a page.
This is unacceptable and darn near unusuable.
Does anyone know of any fixes or tips to make this stop? Is this an issue with Mavericks "breaking" the NVIDIA display drivers? Something that's changed with how external monitors are supported or managed?
    Thank you in advance!

I unplugged my Macbook and worked with it away from my monitor for a while. When I came back a day later and plugged it in, the flicker problems were resolved, for the most part. Launcher renders smoothly. I see a little bit of the Application folder animating only, but I think that may just be the icons themselves updating. Safari renders pages as expected and the URL bar no longer flickers/redraws while loading. I think it might have been the new gradient-progress bar redrawing that threw it off before.
Unplugging and re-plugging (along with much ranting in between) seems to have resolved this for the moment. I'll be working away from my desk again soon, so we'll see whether this holds up once I dock it again. So far, though, so good. I didn't apply any updates while I was away, unless Mavericks does something like that in the background without notifying me but it doesn't appear to be doing that.

  • External display flickers for a fraction of a second

    Hello all,
Im using a macbook pro 15 with the new invidia 8600m graphics, hooked up to a cinema hd 30 inch display at home and a HP 30 inch display at work.
At times, maybe twice an hour, my external display will flicker for a fraction of a second. I can not find a source of the problem, having tried all available graphics drivers from apple and forceware drivers from laptopvideo2go.
The problem does not seem to be related to any particular action in vista, like opening windows or applications. It just flickers at any given time, for a fraction of a second and then comes back to normal.
I have tried all available drivers. Yes, UAC is off. TMM is off, too. Yes, it does the flickering on both my cinema hd and the hp 30 at work. Yes, it is very very annoying.
Anyone else having the same problem? Any idea of what it might be?

I have but the problem is still there. Matt on this forum has the same problem. He is in Austria, so maybe there is issue with streaming ATV in 50hz countries.
Will try to connect the ATV directly to my projector instead of going through the receiver.

  • External display TV flickering

I am using my tv as a external display. im running it from my iMac mini display port to a hdmi converter. the screen is flickering about every 10 secs. any ideas?

It could be a simple fix, like what happened to me.
I realized that by having my iPhone too close to the computer caused my 2nd monitor to flicker.
As it turns out, the iPhone internal OS is constantly sending out signals, checking for updates, location changes, all kinds of stuff… even when it is OFF.
Other electronic devices being too close could also be the cause like radios, neon lights or even the flickering christmas tree lights on the house next door ?
Try to swap cables with alternates if possible, try a different TV ?
There are tons of posts here with flickering iMacs even just up-graders to Mavericks.
Good luck, and let us know if you find out anything.

  • Using iMac as external display from Macbook Pro flickers static and crackles.

I'm trying to use my iMac as an external display.
When I plug in my early 2011 Macbook Pro into my Mid 2010 iMac via a Belkin Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort, the iMac screen flickers with static and there's random crackling noises.
Weird thing is, when I try the same thing with a new Macbook Air, everything works perfectly!
    Here's a quick video demonstrating what I'm talking about - http://youtu.be/xxTXVRffWwE
Are the two not compatible or do I just have a defective Macbook Pro? The Macbook Pro works fine with the Cinema Display I have in the office...

Huh, It should work like this:
Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
    iMac Model
    Cable Supported
    Port on Source Computer
    iMac (27-inch Late 2009)
    Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort
    Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt
Actually that table seems illogical. The cable supported is mini to mini display but the port says "or Thunderbolt"
Does that seem contradictory to you?
