External GPU question!!!
I recently bought a mid-2012 macbook pro 13 inch (high end) without realizing that I would get into PC gaming. The stock graphics card, Intel HD Graphics 4000, is not powerful enough, by far, to run the games I want it to, such as MW3 (and blops 2 when it comes out) and Battlefield 3. You cannot change the graphics cards in the macbook pro, they are a special small format to fit in the macbook pro. Your only alternative is to sell you macbook pro and buy a real high end one that has a better graphics card.

I own a Lenovo G550 (model 20023). It currently has a Intel Pentium Dual Core T4500, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator(That's one hell of a bad GPU!!!!), 4Gb DDR3 Ram(had 2gb DDR3 Factory Installed), with 3 operating systems(Yes, three!).
I can see that the Gpu bottlenecks the whole Computer. My objective is to run Prince Of persia:Forgotten Sands at a proper resolution and at medium Graphics Mode without High Resolution Textures(or Minecraft at about 100 fps At full setting, in 16x16 texture pack).
I see that the only way to safely increase without turning my computer into a paperweight si by using a External Gpu. But, I dont know anything about them(like Where to get them readymade, Will it fit into the PCI ExpressCard port etc.). Please give some Information.hi atreyabain,
The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator on the G550 is soldered on the motherboard and can't be upgraded. There's also no PCI / PCI-E slot on the mobo where you can add a discrete card. AFAIK, there's no ready made external GPU. You need to do it yourself . See the following:

Although it looks promissing, it may not be practical and you're better off buying a mid/high-end rig for your gaming needs.

MBP 13" late 2011 external GPU for gaming
Hi guys i am really confused with the articles on the internet about external GPU. I am a 13 inch MBP user with bootcamp for playing games. I was recently trying to play watchdogs and i saw also the fifa 15 requirements that are too high for my MBP. I need a solution and i cannot afford to buy a PC or another laptop or any console, so i found in the internet about external GPU. I also saw that it needed expresscard slot which my MBP does not have. So can my MBP uses the external GPU? What does GPU increases? Can anyone help me answering my question? Thanks a lot before.

Long story short, if your computer doesn't meet the requirements, it doesn't meet the requirements. There are some Thunderbolt -> PCI X boxes that can run almost any GPU. However, in OS X, a Thunderbolt Aware driver for the graphics card is necessary for these to work. This is a limitation of the OS, not the hardware.
As to what a GPU is, it stands for "Graphics Processing Unit." This is a chip that's designed to manipulate and alter memory to accelerate the creation of images. The better the GPU, the higher the FPS/details that can be loaded at once.
tldr;
If your system doesn't meet the requirements due to graphics card limitations, it doesn't meet the requirements. You can't open your MBP up and throw in a new GFx card. If it's RAM limitations, that's fudgeable a little bit. If it's processor (CPU), you're in the same boat as you were with the GFx card.

Does Thunderbolt 2 provide the ability to run an External GPU
Does Thunderbolt 2 provide the ability to run an External GPU (Nvidia Quadro 4000) for Mercury Playback in Premiere? The newly announced Mac Pro looks good except their choice in GPU, AMD, is very undesirable for any video editor using Adobe.
Apple seems to be trying to use their hardware to give their inferior software, Final Cut X, a competive edge over Adobe Premiere.
Either way, will it work? Will Thunderbolt 2 allow for full usage of external cards powering the new Mac Pro?

I have heard that Thunderbolt PCIe cards are not actually run at full capacity because Thunderbolt is limited in respects of PCIe power.
A PCIe slot has 16x lanes of power and thunderbolt has 8x lanes. I have wondered if Thunderbolt 2 is more powerful in that respect.
I might be wrong on all of this information becuase I have read from mixed sources all over.
As for video editors in my position, I just learned that Adobe plans to provide Mercury playback for the AMD cards that are coming in the new Mac Pro.
Still, I always appreciate overkill and would still love external cards on top of powerful internal cards. -

As far as I know, the INTERNAL CPU to GPU data transfer speed is way faster than the speed you can obtain via thunderbolt, so it doesn't matter what GPU you put in an external thunderbolt case, you won't benefit on any speed increase.
But still when I goggle this subject I find people saying that they edit and render much faster with an external thunderbolt case and GPU.
So I thought about trying to find the "truth" here on this forum.
Anyone else wants to share his/her experience?

It really depends on where you use it. I know many have made an issue of the glare screen. I went and played with it at the local Apple store and decided I could make it work. By using lamps appropriately in my area, I don't have issues with glare. And I appreciate the clarity of the screen.
Now, if I were getting a laptop, I'd insist on the non-glare screen, because various environments are difficult to control. But in my office, I have easily made it work, and am pleased with the result. -
Flex Pro 2 15 External GPU potential. Help Please!!!!
Hi guys and girls i have just purchased a new Flex Pro 2 15 and am quite happy with it (apart from windows 8 lol) but am at a slight loss with the graphics. Its ok being a Nvidia 840m but not quite powerful enough certain appliactions. So ive been doing some research about External GPU's and possibilities of it. My problem is im not sure as to whether it would be possible with this laptop at all regarding the internal PCIe, i know it is currently occupied by the wireless card but i dont mind removing this and having a USB device.Does anybody know whether it would be possible to run a GPU from this expansion? Can I use Magma's EB1 to run an external GPU for GPU-computation?
Hi,
I'd like to run an Nvidia GTX 285 with my MacBook Pro (late 2008) for double-precision GPU-accelerated computation, not for any graphics output. I think the only way would be via ExpressCard. I've found a card from Magma: the board set for their EB1 unit which supplies an external PCIe x16 slot via ExpressCard/34. I would replace the 60W PSU with ~250W to power the 285. I would need the board set and my own enclosure because the retail EB1 can't fit the double-width 285, and can't power it. Magma says the EB1 has been tested with MacBook Pro's, but not explicitly for GPU processing.
The question is whether there's any particular reason to think the 285 wouldn't be found as a PCIe device using this setup? I'd be using CUDA for development, and it's supposed to be able to find multiple GPU's on your system. I know ExpressCard will only give me x1 bandwidth, but that's fine for my needs now.

Message was edited by: mgstaufferSorry, incorrect. There are no drivers for powerline adapters, just like there are no drivers for your router. They are essentially single port switches. Just plug them in and go. However, can they be used between a modem and the router? That I'm not sure of. I would think they may work since they are pass through devices and do not require an IP. Someone else may know.

With the new Mac Mini refresh, any hope of a new discrete GPU inside has been completely killed. That said, I need a new PC still, and I'm willing to get creative in order to find a Mac that suits my needs inside my budget (under $1k, gaming capable). While initially disappointed, I did have a Eureka moment when I saw a Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure for external cards, but I have a question to ask first.
To those who have tried it, what success did you have with External GPUs over Thunderbolt? I'm well aware of the limitations of the Thunderbolt spec, in that it's essentially a PCIe 2.0 4x slot, but I also know that many higher end desktop GPUs don't even saturate an 8x slot, and that the lower end ones use even less bandwidth, despite the slot length. My idea was to grab a Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure, like the OWC HELIOS, and jam a GeForce 650 inside for gaming purposes. Allegedly, it works fine under Windows with some tweaking and software hacks, but I want to get confirmation before I run out and drop the coin for such a setup. I'm absolutely dying to switch to Mac here, and I'm willing to Frankenstein my way into a good setup if need be, I just want input from those who have tried or succeeded with it first.
Thanks!For what it's worth to other people searching I did find this article on Tom's Hardware about the Echo Express Pro, which showed me two things:
The solution works on Windows, since it sees Thunderbolt as a PCI Express slot.
It likely won't work under OS X, since Apple doesn't support it, nor do vendors.
The latter point isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just a symptom of a bad round of hardware design by Apple on the Mac Mini, combined with their desire to keep the platform as stable as possible by limiting hardware driver support to 3rd party peripherals and whatever hardware they shove into the Mac itself. I can understand where Apple is coming from, even if I disapprove of it in this specific case. That said, while the current Mac Mini doesn't meet my needs on its own, Thunderbolt makes it possible to meet my needs for gaming, so long as I don't mind booting into Windows 7 to accomplish it. The major downside to all this is cost: with a Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure running $380 to $1000, and a low power gaming GPU like the GeForce 650 going for $120, you're looking at $500 or so alone just to get into the game, not including the cost of the Mac Mini itself which, if you're a gamer anyhow, is at least $1200 with that spiffy Fusion Drive and an AppleCare warranty!
Still, it's an option. Just not a very reasonable one. As much as I'm absolutely dying to switch, I guess I'll try holding out another year to see if the next refresh fixes the Mini and brings back discrete graphics. This price of entry is just way too steep. -
Issues with using 3 monitors on 2 external gpu

I have some issues with configuring Xorg to use 3 monitors. I have 2 external graphic cards (same model, no SLI). Monitors connected to the first gpu are recognized ok but I can't configure my 3rd monitor conencted to the second gpu via HDMI nor DVI.
1st is recognized as DVI-I-1, 2nd is DP-1 in first card, 3rd monitor is in second card (bus 22:00.0) as DP-1-2 (also tried connecting as DVI-I-2). I can see them in Xorg log but I can't configure my 3rd monitor via kscreen nor xrandr. :-/

Thanks for any help!I have a similar issue except with two ATI cards and four monitors.
I have a working xorg.conf that uses Xinerama and all 4 work but have been trying to get xrandr to work since xinerama is deprecated supposedly.
I would like to switch to xrandr but there is some kind of magic voodoo I have with my current xorg.conf that doesn't even work on an exact same machine and cards that I tried to setup for a co-worker.

My Xorg.0.log shows all the DVI connections when I don't use a xorg.conf file but only two are "connected"
I see DVI-0 and DVI-1 connected and in "xrandr -q" but in Xorg.0.log I see DVI-1-2 and DVI-1-3.
xrandr --listproviders show the two cards as well.
Tried "xrandr --setprovideroutputsource 1 0" and they show up in KDE but as clones and then X crashes eventually.
"xrandr --setprovideroutputsource 0 1" just plain crashes X -
Another external drive question
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've partitioned my WD 500 GB firewire 800 external drive into three partitions. My intention was to obtain a bootable backup in the first partition (100 GB) and have the other two as supplemental strorage for future use (200 GB and the remaining approx. 165 GB). After performing an immediate backup of the Macintosh HD into the first partition, I read that a "duplicate", not "backup" was required for boot purposes.
I'd really appreciate some suggestions here from those with more experience in these matters. My internal 500 GB HD has approximately 28 GB of used capacity currently (this will grow, of course, over time). Should I have created a partition for a bootable start up and "duplicated" the internal HD? Then, should I use a second partition for normal backups? What size should these partitions be configured to allow for maximum future storage, without pushing the limits on the backup/startup partitions? And finally, what are the steps to re-configure the external to achieve my desired intentions?
This is a lot of question, but I certainly appreciate the guidance provided me thus far in my early days of Mac enjoyment. Thanks.

You can do that using CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or you can use the Apple Disk Utility you already have. A lot of people use SuperDuper and others swear by some of the others. Below are listed Kappy's steps to do it using the disk utility. I use several bootable backups just for peace of mind. I generally clone to one and then the other so if something happens during the cloning (such as a power outage) I'll still have a drive that works. I usually make a clone about once a month and then backup any important documents every day to a flash drive, cd/dvd, or another hard drive volume. Once you make a clone you should always boot from it to make sure it's booting ok. Sometimes a clone will fail to boot. I also HIGHLY recommend obtaining and using DISKWARRIOR. Diskwarrior is the "gold standard" for disk drive directory maintenance which is the leading cause of hard drive problems. Using DW about once a month or after any force shutdown, forced re-start, or power outage will head off most disk problems. Tom
Kappy's Steps to Produce a bootable clone
Prep external FW drive:
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone. -
Is the PXIe-PCIe8361 adequate for this system? And external clock questions...
Hi all,
I have spent some time piecing together a system and I'd like a sanity check before pulling the trigger on this purchase. The system will contain the following hardware:
1. Chassis: PXIe-1078
2. Controller: PXIe-PCIe8361
3. 3 x PXIe-6363 (16 analog inputs each card, 32 digital inputs each card, all internally clocked @ 10kHz)
4. 2 x PXI-6224 (32 digital inputs on one, 8 digital inputs on the other, externally clocked in "bursts" of 62.5khz)
5. Labview software
The three PXI-6363 cards will be responsible for a mix of analog and digital measurements made @ 10 kHz, timed continuously by the onboard clock.
One PXI-6224 will be clocked externally @ 62.5 kHz and will be used to collect digital data on a 32-bit port. These clock pulses will not be continuous, but will occur in bursts lasting for 2ms every 20ms.
The other PXI-6224 will be clocked externally @ 62.5kHz as well and will be used to collect digital data on an 8-bit port. These clock pulses will not be continuous, but will occur in bursts lasting for 2 ms at random intervals.
My questions are:
1. Am I planning anything that looks unreasonable for this hardware?
2. Should I expect issues with data transfer rates with the PXIe-PCIe8361? I will be operating well within the advertised 110MB/s throughput of the device. I plan to stream this method... NI Fast TDMS data streaming
3. I have only ever used NI cards for continuous measurements made by an onboard clock. When I set up a task to collect data that is externally-timed, will the DAQ be expecting a "continuous" clock pulse, or will the system wait patiently for clock pulses to arrive at any rate (any rate within the spec of the card, of course)?

1-As long as you put the PXI-6224 and the PXIe-6363 cards in the corresponding slots, meaning the express(PXIe-6363) in the express and the hybrid(PXI-6224) in the hybrid.
2-I think you would not have issues with the transfer rate.
3-Your timing specifications sound reasonable to me, I think you will be fine.

Backup to external drive question
Alright, so I have been trying to partition my Macbook HD for a little while now (to install Bootcamp), but it is now telling me to backup all data and format my HD.
So, after looking around for a little while, I found a backup program on the Apple download site called "SmartBackup". It says that I should be able to backup my information to any external HD. I have a 250GB external HD that is in NTFS format (so I can use it on my Windows Desktop, too).
My question is, will I have to partition the external drive to be in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format to do a proper backup? I've been a Mac user for a while, and this is my first time doing a full backup to an external HD. Also, if I partition my external drive, do you know if it will erase the data currently on the external drive?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.Hi,
may I suggest a setup for the external HD with two partitions, one for OSX and one for NTFS:
Open Disk Utility (found in Applications / System Applications) - choose your external drive from the left pane - go to the Partition Tab - from Volume Scheme choose two partitions - set the size of the partitions - click on Options to verify that GUID is set - click on the first partition and choose HFS+ as file format - click on the second partition and choose MS-DOS (is FAT32) as file system
Start the process by clicking on Partition.
To get NTFS (if wanted) for the second partition you have to reformat it while in Windows since Disk Utility can not do this.
Use SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html to make a full bootable backup of your internal OSX system to the external HD (makes it easier to do what you need).
Caution: Using the a.m. procedure will delete all files that curently are on your external harddisk !
