External h.d. recommendations foriMac 24-inch 2.8GHz with 320GB hard drive

Because if interference issues in our home (long story, but Apple's wireless specialists confirmed this) we cannot use our wireless network to back up our iMac to our Time Capsule.
1. I need recommendations for am external desktop (or portable - I don't care) hard drive for use with this iMac. I'll use it for Time Machine backups for the most part. I'm thinking I need a 1TB. LaCie or G-Force? Or some other brand?
2. Can I also use it for permanent or ongoing backups of files which I don't necessarily want to overwrite? (Files which I'd store on the external h.d. and then delete from the iMac.) If so, how do I do this? (Or is this a question better asked elsewhere?)

I have been looking for an option of external storage for awhile and here is my take.
Recently I used Maxtor OneTouch III 750 GB with FW800 as an external Time Machine backup. A little after an year my disk totally crapped. So this is what I did. First and foremost you have to ask yourself what do you want to protect your data against, so you can build your final architecture. In my case, I needed a simple backup solution for TM and additionally I need high performance and redundant storage system for my photos, videos, documents, etc. My solution is this:
- Single Disk for Time Machine (local backup) via USB
- RAID-1 solution to store adn edit my information connected to my iMac via FW800
- 3 1TB WD Caviar Black Disks (1 for the Time machine backup; 2 disks for my RAID1 solution)
I looked into OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro for my RAID1 solution and after at least 7 calls to OWC Tech Support (very helpful guys), this is what I got. The enclosere is great, with Oxford 936 chipset (pretty much the latest one with suppport for RAID and quad interface support); aluminum case for heat distribution and great fan to keep the drives cool. Couple of things that are making the drive not very suitable for RAID1 (thou great for RAID0):
- No external (enclosure) indication on what drive failed and no indication if the replacement drive has been rebuilt. The enclosure supports mirror disk rebuilding
- You have to get 3-rd party software tp enable these types of notification
- Tech support guys said that they had to replace some of the enclosure because of problems for RAID1 support
As alternative, I looked and got Newer Technology Guardian MAXimus RAID-1. Eliminates the above issues. Cons on this enclosure is - old (pretty stable and great chipset - Oxford 924), that lacks eSATA support. For me that was not an issue, since iMac does not have eSATA port. Again, I connect it thru FW800.
For my TM I went with OWC Mercury Elite-AL "Quad Interface". Aluminum case, Oxford934 chipset, etc. Great enclosure for my WD disk for Time Machine, even thou WD produces quite a bit of heat, aluminum case is a must for heat distribution.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.

But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

Oracle recommend configuring a Sun StorageTek 6140 with 15 hard disks

Hi,
How would Oracle recommend configuring a Sun StorageTek 6140 with 15 hard disks for optimal use with multiple Solaris servers running Oracle instances connected via a SAN? Should the storage array be configured as a single RAID 5 device and then LUNs created for the different servers? Or should each Oracle instance have its own dedicated hard disks?
Also might we see better performance if we used Solid State Devices for the ZFS Intent Log (ZIL) and/or L2ARC on ZFS, instead of using the UFS file system straight to the SAN?

I don't think Oracle would recommended any particular way. I would consider the following, but your mileage may vary, so testing is very important.
Raid 1 (10) for logs
RAID5 for Tables
But if you have many servers access the same LUN's/VDISKS then contention may be a problem. Maybe consider consolidating all you servers to a single Oracle Server.( For protection a second server with Oracle Solaris Cluster)
ASM is the best method for managing disks and data placement. But if like to see files/directories then go for UFS with direct I/O enabled. ZFS is fantastic if you want to use Snapshot/clones/Compression, etc.. but I think UFS is faster.
As for cache, Oracle 11gR2 has support for storing objects specifically in FLASH, so look to use the Sun F20 card with 96Gb of flash.

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.

What is the maximum size of hard drive and speed for an internal hard drive to my Macbook Pro (13 inch, Mid 2009), please?
I bought myself a Technics 1TB, 7200 rpm internal hardrive. Made a clone successfully in Super Duper.
It fits, but It is not available for starting up my Macbook Pro. Not available in System Prefs, but visible and grey in Disc Utility.
Although it starts up my Mac Pro just fine.. but not my Macbook Pro.
Is there a limit of hard drive specifics?

I cloned the Technics HDD ( 2,5" HGST Travelstar 7K1000 - 1 TB : HTS721010A9E630) from the MBP.
I tried to boot it up with my Technincs ( 2,5" HGST Travelstar 7K1000 - 1 TB : HTS721010A9E630) installed in my MBP (as my internal hard drive).

I just bought a 3TB My Book that I would like to store my iPhoto library on and remove it from my hard drive completely. I am running Time Machine with another external drive as back up and would like to use Time Machine to also back up my photos that will be on my My Book external. How do I move my iPhoto library to my new external and delete it from my hard drive? The catch is that I only want this new external to be for my iPhoto. I don't want Time Machine to start backing up my entire hard drive, since I already have an external dedicated to back up. I have not attached my external yet because I am afraid it will automatically start backing up my entire hard drive. First format the drive to OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored:
Next drag your iPhoto library from your Pictures folder to the EHD. When the copying is complete launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and in the window that comes up select the library on the EHD:
Check the file path under the window to make sure the correct library has been selected.
Once you've confirmed that the EHD library is working properly and has all of your photos you can delete the library in your Pictures folder.

How to get batch recognition of (!) on some tracks after moving library from external hard drive to new iMac (with terabyte hard drive)?

I'm using Lion 10.7.2 and iTunes 10.5.2
I have moved my iTunes music from an external hard drive onto my new iMac (with a terabyte hard drive) with music folder organized - when I try to play some tracks I get the iTunes can't locate warning and so I follow through and show iTunes the track - they are all in the music folder on my iMac hard drive - they all copied over and they all appear in the iTunes library list - so far as I can tell out of a 500 gigabyte music collection - but there are so many giving me the error - many other tracks function as they should too, some work others don't - So I'm looking for a way to get all the error tracks fixed in a batch correction way. Doing this individually with each track just isn't realistic.
Can anyone suggest how I might fix this issue?
Also, after I show iTunes the song location and it plays, I get a find files prompt that looks like it wants to find other files, but that just causes the process to jam and I have to force quit iTunes and then it doesn't remember what I last showed it next time I open iTunes.
Also I'm trying to avoid the use of the consolidate function because that would copy a whole other set of music - not in iTunes - that is in the process of being edited (audio hijack pro and fission tools being used to put vinyl and tapes to mp3) But all that other music just means the consolodate function across my whole computer would be too much.

Some details seem to be coming into focus - I have started scrolling through the main library list A to Z repairing tracks individually (there are thousands, but it's what works so far) - as I work through, it appears the problem occurred on tracks where album artist metadata was different than song artist metadata, predominantly. I'm not sure that is 100% the case in every instance, but that is what it's looking like. I don't why that happened, must be some technical glich I guess.
Also, I tried running Doug's Scripts - the one titled, iTunes Track CPR v1.3 - it is supposed to fix exactly the kind of issue I'm having - I bet it would work for some people with a similar issue - but for my case it only identifies the 'de-linked' tracks and doesn't repair them - that is at least helpful as I scroll though to fix them - I can see exactly which tracks have the issue quickly after running that script - but iTunes doesn't remember that warning symbol after a log-out, so it's only worth running the script on a set of tracks I intend to review and fix in any given session at a time.

I have a whitemacbook 13-inch 2010 model. The hard drive crashed right before my final was due. It was not Photoshop, although 2 GB was not near enough to run it, but a corrupted file on the hard drive. should i get a new hard drive, or a new computer?

Any 2.5" SATA notebook drive should work fine. Some are 5400 RPM and some are 7200 RPM drives. The latter are faster. You can choose Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba, Samsung, or Western Digital. There's not a great deal of difference between drives. You may find some reviews and benchmarks at Bare Feats, Storage Review, and Tom's Hardware Review.

I have never heard of a relation between the enabled state of Time Machine, and boot. Its probably coincidental.
Try booting in Safe Mode (hold down shift key, whilst booting). Then check for apllications in your Users & Groups preferences that are starting up with login. Disable all startup apps, then eanable them one at a time, booting normall. See which app is possibly hanging.
You can also try doing a Repair Permissions and Repair Disk on your startup drive. This must be done within Disk Utility when booted to your Recovery Partition. To boot to the Recovery Partition, hold down the OPTION key while booting, and select the Recovery Partition drive to boot from. Then run Disk Utility.

Windows 8.1 Bootcamp with 27 inch 2011 iMac with no DVD drive

Recommended # of "zero out" passes to securely erase hard drive?

I'm selling some old hard drives. Apple's Disk Utility (OS X 10.4.8) provides the ability to "zero out" the data on a hard drive. Options include ability to run 1, 7 or 35 zero out passes. The 7 option will take a day per drive, and the 35, obviously, several days.
Is 1 zero out pass good enough to securely wipe the data? Is running two consecutive 1 zero out passes twice as good as one pass?

Depends on how paranoid you really are, how important it is that no data be recoverable, and who might attempt to recover data from the drive.
In most common cases one pass should be sufficient. If you have extremely top secret NSA data on the drive that highly trained spies will attempt to discover and have access to the most sophisticated data recovery equipment, then go for 35 passes.

My MacBook Pro 13 inch makes a clicking noise from the hard drive and can not start up in safe mode and normal. I then ran disk utility in recovery mode and disk utility shows no problems with the hard drive. What is the problem?

Sounds like a mechanical problem with the drive and it ruined the sectors where the Macintosh HD partition (and OS X, and files and programs) reside, but not your Recovery HD partition.
If you held command option r while booting, that's Internet Recovery and it's loaded via the Internet, not via the Recovery HD partition on the boot drive, so that could mean the drive is dead mechanically or there is another issue.
In either case the drive will likely have to be replaced, it's a matter of what occured to where and the drive state if you can recover data or not. If you made recent backups then your fine.

The hard drive crashed it was an 80GB apple model that is the biggest that originally came with the. powerbook. I was wondering if it is wise to put a larger one and if so which type can I order IE... how big data storage and type IEE etc.

Not a computer guru by any means but I just went through this with a 1.67ghz G4 PB 15" with a crashed hard drive that I was given to me by a relative.
You can replace your HD, the only large ATA drives currently available, I believe, are from Western Digital, their 320gb drive is the largest and is available through Amazon for about $90. Other vendors sell the drive as well.
Go to ifixit.com for excellent instructions on how to do this mod. The HD replacement is a little complicated and you should go through the ifixit instructions to see if you are comfortable tearing into your computer to that degree BEFORE you buy a HD.
