External Hard disk unresponsive after waking from sleep

i have an external usb2 drive connected to my 15" mbp. when waking from sleep, the drive is shown as mounted by accessing it gives me the spinning beachball icon and the computer stops responding until i pull out the usb cable from the mbp. it then proceeds to give me a device removal error. the external drive draws power from the usb bus.
other than this one issue the hard drive works perfectly on both ports.

I got home from work today and was forced to hard restart AGAIN. It seems to be happening more and more often now, but maybe that is just me.
My logitech revolution mouse has never caused problems before with a g4 powerbook or g5 tower. The last thing I added was the apple wireless keyboard. I can't imagine it being the problem since it is using an apple product with an apple computer.
I read the link you sent and used Disc Utility to repair disc permissions and received the following warnings:

I don't know if that has anything to do with the issue I'm having or not. Help!!!

  • External Hard Drive Fail After Waking from Sleep

    Hi,
I've been having this issue for over a year (since upgrading to Lion, and now still persists after upgrading to Mountain Lion), and I haven't been able to find the exact answer I need after searching through the posts here, and on the internet.
I have a 2011 MBP, and after upgrading to Lion last year, I've noticed that my WD external hard drive for the Mac has issues to be recognized after the laptop wakes from sleep. The drive icons are still there on the desktop, and all the files are listed. However, I cannot open any of the files, and Time Machine backup automatically fails.I am able to eject the drives by dragging the icons into the trash can. However, nothing happens if I simply unplug the fire wire 800 cable and re-plug it into the computer after ejecting the drives. I need to reset the external drive by unplugging both the fire wire cable and the power supply, and replug everything.
Aside from being a hampering process after waking from sleep, this is also very stressful on the drive itself, so I would like to fix this. Does anyone know the issue behind this or have a solution? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for this, and apologies for delay in replying...in between seeing your post I backed up the ext hdd to another mac and used the disc utility to erase and repair and then re mounted the ext hdd. OK.  I have then tested the ext hdd being recognised when waking from sleep mode a few times and everything appears to be fine. If this doesn't work (long term) I will follow the instructions as you have suggested....
I now have a new problem with my HP printer (Photosmart Plus) which is not being recognised by a new wireless router..Ok whilst the router is switch on and I have reconfigured the printer..but when the router is switched off overnight and then switched back on...I get a 'printer is not connected' message and have to go through the re configure routine all over. I am minded to think this is a router problem as the same issue is happening to my wifes Mac Book Pro (which is only a few weeks old)...any suggestions..

  • Trackpad unresponsive after waking from sleep with new 17" MacBookPro

We have two 17" MacBookPros and both have this symptom. After waking from sleep or booting, the trackpad is unresponsive. Eventually full control comes back to the trackpad but it takes a while.
Both computers are up to date with all software.
    Any thoughts?
    Really irritating.

Perhaps they are freezing for awhile? Maybe basic repairs are in order.
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

  • Sound volume control unresponsive after waking from sleep

Lately, a strange problem has developed on my MacBook 13-inch Aluminum (Late 2008), running Mac OS X 10.6.4:
After waking the MacBook from sleep, the sound volume control keys on the keyboard does not affect the volume control of:
    * Neither the sound volume output by the built-in speakers,
    * nor the sound volume indicator/slider in the menubar,
    * nor the sound volume indicator/slider in the Sound preference pane in System Preferences,
Only the sound volume slider/indicator in the Sound preference pane in System Preferences has an effect on the actual volume ouput by the built-in speakers.
First I thought the problem was affected by disconnecting a set of analog headphones while the MacBook was sleeping -- it seemed that after sleep the volume control keys on the keyboard and menubar item still was set to affect the headphone port and not the built-in speakers.
However, the problem just occured after sleeping without anything connected to the MacBook. The built-in speakers were muted, when the MacBook lid was closed, and the computer went to sleep - after waking from sleep the built-in speakers were unmuted - and control was only possible through System Preferences.
    Any ideas?

Not sure if you stumbled on the other threads like this one:

I've been having the same problem on my Mac Pro for a while, finally decided to see if there were some other people having the problem. I'll see if the others have a solution yet.
One workaround I've been doing is to go to Preferences -> Sound and select a different output device. For me, I have to flick to Internal Speakers and then back to Line Out.

Unfortunately coping the partition does not work.  I don't thing you will be able to create recovery media from the copied partition on the external but if you have not yet created recovery disk you can give it a try.
If you cannot create the recovery media you will need to contact HP support to obtain a recovery kit.

Hi All, Since updating to Lion, my imac won't recognise the ext HDD (Maxtor) when waking from sleep mode, I have tried another port, diisc utility (Ext HDD not listed in here) but nothing works. • System unresponsive after waking from sleep

I've been looking at G4 dual 1.25ghz MDD, which for ages has been impossible to wake from sleep without a hard restart.
Anyway, we've done a complete erase, reformat, re-install 10.4.11 which has cured the problem almost, but not entirely.
The computer now merrily goes to and wakes from sleep, with the display reappearing and the cursor visible and active, but the system is completely unresponsive for about 20 seconds, then it is back to normal. Any attempt to click on a dock icon in that period leads to a bouncing icon, but the application will not launch. After about 10 seconds of this the system will completely stop, except that the cursor will still freely move around the screen.
Checked the ram, zapped PRAM, NVRAM, PRAM battery is not that old and should be ok, but I haven't yet tried with a fresh one, no other USB or FW devices attached, monitor attached by VGA.
    Anyone got any other ideas?

Reset PMU ? Although from what you say, it's doesn't look like a PMU problem.
Could be AppleTalk restarting, or something else that stops when you put the Mac to sleep.
Many MDD users had a similar issue when wakin g from sleep, usually with an ADC monitor, rather than VGA or DVI, requiring the PMU reset as the MDD had to power up the monitor too (not on it's own power supply as it is with DVI / VGA) and it would have trouble doing so.

  • IMac is unresponsive after waking from sleep

    Have a late 2006 20 inch iMac
This just started happening... after a long sleep when you wake screen is either blank or frozen.
Restart does NOT help... Just have a blank screen. Sometimes a flashing question mark
The only way is to restart with a safe boot. Then it takes at least 10 minutes to come back up.
Then if you restart it's ok until it goes to sleep again.
Sometime just checking something like mail will freeze the system
Have done the pram reset. Used disk utilities to check/repair HD... Said all was fine. repaired permissions etc.
Was running system 10.5.8 upgraded to system to 10.6.4 same results
Have not done a complete erase of HD yet
    Any ideas? Thanks

I'm having the same issue with my Macbook, and it started just after I updated to 10.6.5. This has happened ~5 times in the last week and I never had this problem before. Either there's a blank screen after wake or there is no response when I type into the log in screen (I have mine set up to require a password after wake)

  • MBP Unresponsive after waking from sleep

Hey Guys, I have found some similar discussions but nothing has helped me so far so I figured I would ask this in my own words and see if anyone has a solution.
Occasionally (up to once per day) I will try to wake my MBP and it will be completely unresponsive, forcing me to force-shut-down using the power button. When this happens the fan will be running at a high speed and the entire computer will be very hot.
This may have something to do with using second displays as this seems to happen frequently after using displays, however, it seems to happen without using secondary displays as well.
Please help! This has been going on for quite some time and it is driing me crazy!

Thanks, Linc.  I was worried that since this was a refurbished computer, it was dying again.  Makes sense, although alittle annoying that nothing really warns you this is happening.  I almost cycled power the first couple times it happened, thinking it was stuck while waking.

  • After waking from sleep, my iMac (Lion) is unresponsive.  The mouse moves, but when I click things it won't open them.

After waking from sleep, my iMac (Lion) is unresponsive.  The mouse moves, but when I click things it won't open them.
This has happened EVERY time the iMac goes to sleep for the last few days.. the only way I have found to resolve the issue is to manually restart the computer each time via the button on the back of the iMac.
Any and all help is appreciated!
    Thanks

FWIW, I never sleep my machines or their HDs, just their displays and never have an issue waking up the displays, usually run 24/7. Give that a shot.

  • Disk drive thrashing after waking from sleep

Apple conundrum - iMac goes from sleepy to grumpy....
At times after waking from sleep mode, my disk drive thrashes for up to 3-5 minutes. The thrashing almost always includes an SSBOD. Then it stops and things seem fine.  My iMac is not backing up as I check for the TIme Machine icon activity.  I have also checked and disk permissions and keychain ae fine.
Any ideas on what is causing the disk thrashing.... and how to fix it.
    Thanks
    Bruce

To find out what the Mac is getting grumpy about, open your Activity and check to see what it's doing those first few minutes.

  • Restarting after waking from sleep

I have a mid 2010 macbook pro running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.3 of which keeps restarting after being left in sleep mode for an hour or two. When waking from sleep mode, the mac functions for about 5 seconds, before restarting by itself. I have tried deleting certain plist files (as suggested by other posts) but that doesn't seem to have helped. I have also recently installed a new hard drive, but i continue to have the same problem. Replace the pair of DIMMs first.
    Monitor the temps inside.
    Install and use SmcFanControl 2.2
    Run Apple Hardware Test
You may want to try a clean system install to test with once you have the RAM replaced. Faulty RAM can cause all kinds of issues. And dirty files. Some deeper check for corrupt files than Disk Utility is probably in order.
There is a significant "Inrush-current" on boot and wake from sleep with the 2008s. They need good power, a 1500VA/900W UPS, and sensitive to other equipment on the same circuit.

  • External monitor initially flashes on waking from sleep

I recently upgraded to 10.4.8. My PowerBook is connected to an external monitor and now often flashes when I wake the machine from sleep. It takes a while too settle down but then works fine. If I wake from sleep without the external monitor, there are no problems. I had no problems using 10.1. Does anyone have a fix?
    G4 PowerBook (PowerBook6,1)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   867 MHz

I found the following article from Apple: TA20612. It reads as follows:
"The popping sound does not indicate any software issue or hardware failure. This is a normal part of hardware-software initialization after waking from sleep or during startup."
I'm a bit skeptical. I think I would have noticed this on the old iMac. Since I haven't yet sold it, I'm going to try to arrange for some side-by-side testing. I'll update this thread when I have the results.

  • IBook G4 temporarily unresponsive when waking from sleep on AC power

    Hi,
I've noticed that my iBook G4 (late 2004) is temporarily unresponsive when waking from sleep, after having slept and been awoken on AC power (with the battery removed). The computer wakes up, but does not respond to trackpad or keyboard inputs for a non-trivial amount of time (30 seconds or so). There are no problems when sleeping and waking with the battery plugged in. I remove the battery to try to maintain it at a constant 40% load to conserve battery capacity. I am running Mac OS X 10.4.6.
Does anyone have a clue what could be causing this weird behaviour?

And yes... everything is normal at wake-up.
The only other thing I'll add is that the iBook battery replaces the traditional on-board battery found in all Macs used to retain several key settings when a system is unplugged. Things like system time for example. I can only venture a guess that some key setting is being recalculated on wake-up from a no-battery sleep, and the process that reads keyboard input is frozen until that setting is restored.

  • Unable to get keyboard or mouse focus back after waking from sleep

Here's a problem with very specific symptoms, which I've seen on a number of Macs that I support:
    - After waking from sleep, the Macs are unable to fully achieve focus on any window. All windows, in all apps, appear to be in the background -- their frames have the lighter gray look of backgrounded windows.
    - I can grab any window and move it around, and even interact with elements of the window by clicking on them. I cannot, however, ever really bring the window to the front.
    - I can't type anywhere.
    - Regardless of what window I click on, the OS menu bar remains "stuck" on whatever app was in the foreground when the Mac went to sleep. Sadly, though, none of the menus can be selected or pulled down.
The only way out of this state is to force a restart.
I am wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior, or, better yet, has actually solved it.
    Thanks in advance!

Check the Display & Enhance Contrast settings - System Preferences/Universal Access
Or repair permissions and restart your computer.
Or *Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.* Boot from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
    Click _*Repair Disk.*_
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
