External hard drive copying mp3 files to play on tv

ive looked all over the internet but i cant figure out why my tv doesnt recongise the mp3 files on my external hard drive.
i tested it with one album that was mp3 and it worked but, now that i have copied all my mp3 files to the hard drive and tried to look them up on the tv there is nothing in the folders of the albums?
im not sure if its because i had all my music in one folder and transfered it to my mobile phone. then delted the original foler.
i then took the folder back off my mobile and onto my mac then onto my hard drive. wouldnt that be the cause of the problem?
im using a mac and i have formatted my hard drive to ms-dos(fat32)
and my tv manual tell me it plays mp3 files.
any help would be very greatful.

ot to worry i figured it out!

    Hi skoorb1,
When adding music to iTunes, you can set it to either make a local copy of the file, or simply point to the original location of the file (for example, on an external hard drive). If it is set to do the latter, it will not be able to play or transfer those files when the external hard drive is not plugged in. You may find the following article helpful:

Many users keep their iTunes libraries on external drives. You just have to remember to connect and power up the drive before launching iTunes.

  • External Hard drive and dmg files not mounting

External Hard drive and dmg files suddenly not mounting. Im running Mavericks on 27" iMac. Anyone have a fix or has anyone else suddenly had this problem? There was a Mavericks update a few weeks ago, but things were fine until today. This is weird. Ive checked in disk utility and can see one of my two external HD's, the one that I back up. But not even this will mount. Ive tried repairing HD thinking it was damaged but now see that all my ext hd's suddenly dont mount. Ive tried several mac restarts.

Solved the problem. My external HD is a WD (My Book Studio). I needed to install updated driver manager and this fixed it:

I have just updated to Final Cut Pro 10.1.4 - I have updated Projects and Events on my external hard drives (off the File menu). It's says under several projects 'missing file' - but they were all there working fine before I updated. I am working off 2 external drives - not sure if that would make a difference.

After the update each seperate connected drive should now have a seperate Library.
The older Projects and Events folders would have to be at the top level of those drives go be seen and updated.
Were all the necessary Projects and Events in the corrrct place before updating?

  • Itunes on external hard drive - some mp3s stalling and crashing - HELP!

    Hi,
I hope somebody can help me.
I've had my itunes library on a western digital external hard drive for nearly a year now. i have upwards of 17, 000 songs. Recently after a few seconds playback of certain songs the hard drives starts to click, the songs stalls, jumps ahead then stalls.
I can't play these tracks in another player such as RealPlayer, or even playing the file through Get Info direct from the hard drive.
It's happening more frequently and I'm worried I'm going to end up losing a lot of songs. I also tried dragging the mp3 onto the desktop but it comes up with:
+The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in " " could not be read or written. (Error Code -36.)+
Is there anyway to salvage the files? Stop it happening to other ones?
I'd really appreciate a response if anybody has had a similar experience or knows what to do.
    Thanks,
    Tom.

    Hi,
In case you haven't solved your problem yet, here are some tips.
First, the file that iTunes was indicating was "Damaged" was probably the main file it uses, iTunes Library in your "Music" folder. If this file is corrupted for any reason, iTunes will rename it with the word "Damaged" in the filename, and create a new, empty iTunes Library file. Since all the metadata, containing the definitions of the playlists, etc are stored in this file, you lose all your playlists when the "Damage" occurs. The underlying music files are untouched, as you indeed see.
I've not run into any scripts that actually repair a "Damaged" library file per se. But, if you have a copy of your files on a backup tape, CD, or another machine, you can simply copy that backup file back onto your "Music/iTunes" folder, thereby overwriting the new, empty library file, and you should have all your playlists back. I've done this a number of times without problem when I've had damaged library files.
Going forward you might want to take a look at iTunes Library Manager in Doug's Applescripts for iTunes for managing your library file.
Secondly, check iTunes/Preferences/Advanced and check to make sure the path to your iTunes library is correctly shown in the window. If not, correct it with the "Change" button. You will note that the iTunes library, xml file and a few other files will remain in your "Music/iTunes" folder, while all of your music will be located on your external drive. Don't move the remaining iTunes files in your "Music/iTunes" folder.
As you add new music to your library, you'll see the audio file be copied to your external drive, while the iTunes library file will grow slightly.
    Good luck!
    Ed

You may need to prepare yourself for a "World of Hurt" from your wife...
Since the average 0.9 megapixel JPEG photo file of normal graphic complexity stored at a high quality compression setting is 125-135 KBs in size, I would have to assume any QT video files you created of more than a fraction of a second in duration were most likely saved as "reference" files to only be 50-150 KBs. Basically, a reference file is q QT (MOV) file that tells a video player how to play data that is still stored in its original source file container(s). For instance, you could trim and merge a number of files together and save the result as a "reference" file that takes up very little room on your hard drive. Or, you could post fles to a server and create a "reference" file that is small enough to be sent as an email attachment that plays the uploaded data on someone else's computer as long as they are connected to the Internet. Unfortunately, for these reference files to work, all of the resources referenced within the file must continue to exist in their proper locations in order to be found and played by the reference. Since you did not indicate what "but they won't play" really means here or how you actually "moved" your iPhoto library files to the external drive, I can only make some "educated guesses" at this point. (BTW: for future reference, iPhoto has a built-in function that allows you to copy your library to one or more back-up locations and then connect to them by default when iPhoto opens or switch source libraries at will within the opened application.)
If you created reference files and saved them to an external drive, you should be getting an error message telling you the app needs to know where the source files are located so the reference file can re-connect to the resource data. If the original files were also saved, then simple navigate to the source files in oder to tell the app where they are now located. If the source files were deleted as part of the reformatting process, then you are up the proverbial creek whithout a paddle with little or no hope of doing anything about this issue. (I.e., reformatting and then re-installing a system drive usually means you would have little hope of recovering the specific "lost" data you want as there is always a good chance that some of the data segments were overwritten during the process.)

  • HT1473 External Hard Drive (windows media files)

Just bought a MAC and I want to "import" my Window Media Files from an external hard drive (western digital) into my iTunes.  I own and copied all of my
CDs onto this external drive and it works just fine with my Windows PC.  When I connect the external drive to the iMac everything appears as it should.  When I try to "import library" from itunes it doesn't do anything.  No attempt to convert to the Apple format at all.  I can play the music using "Flip4Mac" but this doesn't help in trying to add it to my iTunes.  Any help would be grateful.
    Bill in Wyoming.

iTunes for Mac doesn't play Windows Media Audio Files. Neither does iTunes for Windows, but it does include a feature that will convert WMA according to your current import settings. Convert your files on your old Windows box before moving them to the Mac.

  • Trying to back up iPad to external hard drive, "iTunes library file cannot be saved. The disk you are attempting to use is full."

This issue is somewhat complex so I will try to explain it as clearly as I can. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
It all began when I kept getting popups from my iPad saying that I had not backed up since May. I realized that was pretty dangerous so I decided to finally try syncing it to iTunes, though I had avoided doing so for so long because I knew that when I tried there was no room on the computer. I then remembered that I have an external hard drive with plenty of storage space, so I got that out and set it up with a folder to move iTunes and the backup into.
On iTunes I went to the Advanced Preferences and changed iTunes Media Folder Location to the G: folder, with the keep organized box checked. I also copied the previous backups from the original C: drive to G: so that I could delete the ones on C:.
I used Junction Link Magic to link my now empty MobileSync backup on C: to a new (JLM would not work unless it was empty) backup folder on external hard drive G:.
I plugged in my iPad to iTunes to sync it, and while it was backing up I checked the new folder on G: to make sure that the backup was being put there. It was.
However, about halfway through I got the message "iTunes library file cannot be saved. The disk you are attempting to use is full."
My question is Why? If it is being made in a 1.5 terabyte hard drive now, and not the computer, why is there no disk space? My guess is that it must still somehow be saving to the computer. But how? And how can I get it to save solely on the G: drive where there is enough room?
I am running Windows XP and the latest version of iTunes.
An additional but not as crucial issue:
Much of my music has been lost, with the being displayed next to the songs in the iTunes library, and only 50 (purchased) songs remain on my iPad. This was because those missing songs were stored on a different external hard drive ( I:). However, I copied many of the music folders on I: over to G: so that everything could be together. I am wondering if it is possible for me to get these songs back onto my iPad. But this is not my most important issue right now, because I believe that once I get the first issue solved I can simply plug in I: and G: at the same time while syncing the iPad, and get the songs back.
Note: I have come to realize the iTunes program itself is still under Program Files in the C: drive. Does this have to do with anything?

Short term, free up some disk space. Long term, move the library to a bigger drive.

  • How do I find my external hard drive and move files?

Im totally a non tech person so please bear with me. I have had my imac for several years. I started getting a message every time I went to do anything saying that I didnt have the space available to do whatever I was trying to do. I finally bought a 2tb external hard drive. It didnt come with instructions or anything so all I did was plug it in. The computer seemed to recognize it and something having to do with timemachine came up and I just clicked yes and it did its thing for about 2 hours and it was done. I didnt get the message about the available space again so I assumed that corrected it. Well today when I went to update my software its telling me I dont have the space available for the update. I have no idea what is going on. I dont even see an icon on my desktop for the hard drive, just timemachine. What am I doing wrong?

AS you drag files to an external drive, a little Plus sign + will appear to indicate the files will be copied.
You need to delete some files ASAP.  Best to have greater than 2gig of free space.  Many posters to these forums state that you need much more free space: 5 gig to 10 gig or 10 percent of you hd size.

Be careful when deleting files. A lot of people have trashed their system when deleting things. Place things in trash. Reboot & run your applications. Empty trash.
Go after large files that you have created & know what they are.  Do not delete small files that are in a folder you do not know what the folder is for. Anything that is less than a megabyte is a small file these days.

  • External Hard Drive Not Showing Files

Hi. I'm really in a panic right now because school starts tomorrow and a problem occurred with my external hard drive today. Before I start, I would like to clarify that I use a Macbook Pro 15" (not Retina Display). Here is what happened:
Around 6 months ago, I was organizing the contents of my external hard drive into folders (i.e. "Movies" > "Romance," "Action," "Horror," etc.). In the midst of doing so, my laptop kind of froze and before I knew what was happening, the contents of the "Movies" folder was invisible. The "Movies" folder itself was still visible and accessible, but its contents were not. When I double-clicked the "Movies" folder, nothing would be shown. It was as if it was empty. The problem is that something was still taking up space on my external hard disk. When my friends asked to copy some of my movies onto their computers, I agreed and saw that they could access the "Movies" folder on their Mac laptops! This means that it was probably a problem with my Mac laptop. I decided to ignore it because I was still able to access the contents of the folder if I plugged in my external hard drive into my TV (it's an LG TV).
Today, I decided that I've had enough with the invisible folder. I needed to access movies from the folder and because I couldn't access it, I got very stressed and decided to repair it myself. It was probably one of the worst decisions I've ever made.
I opened Disk Utilities and clicked "Repair Disk" and then "Verify Disk." I then clicked "Repair Disk" again just to be safe (which was absolutely stupid in hindsight). Hoping it would have solved the problem, I ejected my external hard drive and plugged it back in. Once I plugged it in and opened it, I was faced with this:
There was absolutely nothing else visible in my external hard drive. The reason I'm still fighting to fix this and not throwing out the hard disk is that when I got the info of my hard drive, a lot of space was still taking up my hard drive. Here is what I did (the name of my external hard drive is "Mines of Moria"):
Mines of Moria > right-click > Get Info
Once the info was shown ("Mines of Moria Info"), I saw this:
Do you see how annoying this is?! It clearly states that there is only 17.78 GB left on the external hard drive meaning that there are a LOT of files on this hard drive considering its capacity is 1 TB, but I can't access or see anything inside the external hard drive! I tried to open my hard drive on my brother's Alienware (Windows 7), but it couldn't open it because its format. I also tried plugging it into my LG TV and the only folder visible is the "found.000" folder and I can't access it.
Please give me some advice as to what I can do as soon as possible. I am willing to go to a store to fix it, but I would much rather try to do it myself at home. I transferred all my movies from my laptop to this external hard drive because I had no more space on my laptop (yes, almost 90% of the space taken up on my external hard drive is used up by movies and episodes).
Please help me. I also have school files on here (granted, they are from two years ago, but you never know when you're going to use them). I'm a HUGE movie junkie and I've downloaded so many movies that I don't even remember what I downloaded last week (I just can't keep track of which ones I've downloaded when).
This is really important to me, so I would be VERY grateful for any and all relevant and helpful tips and advice.

The problem is caused by the third-party software you installed in order to make NTFS volumes writable. Refer to the developer for support. You might be able to repair the volume in Windows using the CHKDSK program.
