Hello Apple Support Communities!
I have a Western Digital 320GB external hard drive and it currently has 0 bytes available. This has prevented me from even viewing the hard drive on my finder window. I can only see it in disk utility. I have tried repairing the disk and verifying it but neither has worked in letting me view my files. I use the hard drive for movies and now i can't see them! Can anyone recommend free data recovery software so i can delete a few files so that i can view my hard drive? Thank you!

I found a way to sort of mount the drive and consequently do a data recovery.
What i did was highlight the 'iphone-dump.img' and opened it with 'Disk Utility'. Inside of 'Disk Utility', I double-clicked the 'iphone-dump.img' icon and low and behold, it split into two drives, despite it giving me an 'Unable to attach 'iphone-dump.img' (no mountable file systems)' message at the same time.
I wasn't able to do much with it in 'Disk Utility' from there on, so I opened 'Data Rescue III' and it became available to scan as a 'Virtual Interface' called 'Apple read:write'. I performed a scan and was able to locate my missing photos. It took a while because there were several duplicates of older photos. I think this is because each time I've restored the phone from a backup, data has been placed in a different location on the hard drive. Therefore, it has not overwritten these very same photos that have been on most of my backups for some time.
I wasn't able to find my missing voice memos from the 'QuickVoice' application though. They appear not to be there. I found the existing ones from the recovery. They must be somewhere surely? Maybe the photos are stored in a different way since the photo application is a default app and 'QuickVoice' is a bought app. ?

Using Time Machine to restore external hard drive data

I have been using a Mac Mini running 10.6.8 for years as a media server. I have always been very careful to maintain backups of everything, and the inevitable did happen - the hard drive containing all my media did fail.
To clarify my set up, my Mac Mini internal hard drive is insufficient to store all my media, so I have been using an external 2TB drive to store it. I then set up Time Machine to back up both the Mac Mini and the 2TB external drive to a second 3TB external drive. Now that the 2TB drive with my media has failed, I seem to be having problems restoring all the media from 3TB drive. This is because the Time Capsule interface is designed to display finder windows at various points in time so you can go back to when your missing files existed and restore them. The problem is that I need the entire contents of the dead 2TB drive restored to a new drive, but I can't open a Time Capsule window that shows the contents of the old drive. I have tried opening /Volumes in a finder window, then invoking Time Machine, but my dead hard drive does not show up in the list of volumes. When I open the 3TB drive in a Finder window I can clearly see that it has backups of the 2TB drive, but they are spread out among 83 different snapshots of various dates.
How can I use Time Machine to easily restore the entire contents of the dead 2TB external drive to a new external drive?

Data retrieval from reformatted external hard drive

I have an 80Gb Lacie rugged portable external hard drive that I had to reformat in Disk Utility in order to mount properly.
In the 'Erase' option I picked 'Don't Erase Data' in the Security Options. As I understand it the data is still retrievable until I start loading fresh content on the drive.
Anyone know of a way/program of retrieving this data?

If you cannot find the data on the drive, your best shot at recovery is Prosoft Data Rescue. There is a free trial to see if it can recover what you need. But don't do another process on that drive until you've downloaded and run it.

Password Protecting An External Hard Drive.

I am running 10.6.2 on my Macbook Pro 2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.
I've just used Super Duper to back up and make a bootable copy of my Macbook Pro's internal hard drive. My question is can I password protect this new external hard drive, and it if it password protected, will I still be able to boot up from it should anything go wrong with the internal hard drive?
If the answer is yes to both questions, then I would very much appreciate some tips on how to go about this.

there are no built in tools for that. but you can turn on filevault on your home directory and encrypt your home folder. that's enough for most people as there really isn't any sensitive data outside your home directory. then of course the home directory on the clone will be just as protected.
if you want full disk encryption you need to use 3rd party tools like TrueCrypt or PGP encryption. I'm not familiar with them and don't know if they allow you to boot from encrypted drives.

The easiest way is to make an encrypted disk image of the folder contents with Disk Utility. Go to Disk Utility's File menu -> New -> Disk Image from Folder. There you can pick an encrypted disk image. Once you have made that image, delete the folder that it came from and leave the image behind. Mind you, there is always the risk you might lock yourself out permanently from that data if the image becomes corrupted. You are safer keeping the external hard disk in a physically safe place when not in use.

Actually, there's really no reason to make the disk image the size of the whole hard drive. It would make it convenient in a way, since the disk image would have plenty of room on it, but it would also make backups a major pain in the arse, since one minor change to one file inside the image file means the whole thing has to get backed up. If you've got a 150 GB drive, that means a change to a 4 k file requires that you back up 150 GB. (And where do you back up several incremental backups of a 150 GB file to, anyway?)
What I would recommend is to use many smaller disk images. For example, if you've got 10 projects on the drive, each taking up, say, 150 MB, then you could make 10 disk images that are 200 MB (or more or less, depending on anticipated growth of the projects), and put the files for each project inside one image. Change one project, you only have to back up one image file, which is only a fraction of the total size of the drive. Even if you made each image file 1 GB -- an order of magnitude larger than the project files -- it would still be something you could easily back up onto a DVD, and all 10 disk images would still only take up less than 7% of a 150 GB drive.

Protection of backups of two machines on one external hard drive

I have one external hard drive which I intended to use to back up two MacBooks owned by different family members. However, it seems that I can access all files on the other person´s backup on the external drive and vice versa, even if our data are protected with user accounts and passwords on our separate machines. You need to partition the drive and each of you should backup to your respective partitions from your computers. You should both be using different usernames and passwords.

I think that was FileVault 1. Starting with Lion (10.7) Mac OS X uses FileVault 2, which is whole disk encryption.
Based on complaints seen in these forums, I would say FileVault 2's only complaint has been when people forget their password/encryption key (it seems an encrypted disk does prevent anyone without the password from accessing the data, including the real owner). Otherwise it does not seem to be causing any serious issues. Your Mileage may vary and objects are closer than they appear in your side view mirror (standard disclaimer). Of course this is all academic while you are using Snow Leopard (10.6).
There are other whole disk encryption packages available, such as PGP Whole Disk Encryption, HOWEVER, I would not advise it for your Mac OS X boot disk, as it has been known to be a problem when you try to install operating system updates or upgrade to a new version. NOTE: I have not seen PGP Whole Disk Encryption discussed much, ever since FileVault 2 came along.

The best protection for your data, is to maintain the data as a encrypted disk image. This will provide both the need for a password, as well as decryption. Creating a "sparse image" will require a password to open:

Ext. HDD passwords, in OS X, are just permissions, which can be changed, or hacked, and don't give much protection.

I have recently copied over a folder on my iOmega (Prestige Portable) External Hard Drive with a folder from my Power Book Hard Drive, with the replace all.
What I need to know is there a way to step back to the point before I copied over this folder?
Ok so here comes the Dumb bit, I have never set up Time Machine! Yes I know, very stupid!
So I'm now in the process of seeing if it is possible to step back with data recovery software and if this is possible what do people reccomend! I have tried SanDisk RescuePro but It comes up with a message saying that the drive is too big, I think it is meant for Flash Drives!
Have I posted this in the right Discussion thread? If not were do you think I would be best to post this?

FIrst, stop using the drive immediately. If the files haven't been overwritten already, the more you use it, the more likely that is.
There are several Data Recovery apps for Macs; +Data Rescue II+ seems to be the one mentioned here most often, but others get good reviews, too. I've not used any, so can't say one is better than another.
I understand you'll need another external disk to receive the recovered files. (But you'll probably need one anyway for Time Machine or other backup app that you'll be using regularly from now on, right? You can use a second internal HD, Time Capsule, or in some cases back-up over your network.)
I also understand that some of these apps have a trial version that will tell you whether there's anything to be recovered, and perhaps recover a single file, so you don't spend the $$ for nothing.
Look for +Data Recovery+ via Google, VersionTracker.com or MacUpdate.com. The last two have user reviews. Just be certain whatever you use is compatible with Leopard.
And/or, search for +Data Recovery+ in the Using Leopard forum.

Formatted external hard drive from PC to Mac - Data Recovery Needed

I formatted an external hard drive configured to (PC) for a Mac.
I clicked erase data by accident during the process of formatting -- My old files are no longer there now.
Is there a way to recover the old files that I had on there before the reformat?

General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive. Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk. Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

I recently updated to Mountain lion 10.8 . I backuped using external hard drive using time machine . I used Lacie drive. I had to format it MAC OSX " extended journaled" before I could back up my dat and after that I backed it up.

1) I cant seem to restore my data back from Time machine as many files seem Locked. I cant use the Migration app since it doesnt show me my external hard drive when I try to use it. Plus Ive heard that Migration app copies whole drives rather than selecting and copying some folders/data.
2) Even if i use the time machine to restore the data , It does copy on to my mac but that locked symbol is still there .
3) I have read that my drive wont show on migration application cuz the OS should be same before and after the backup and there shouldnt be any difference , otherwise the migration app wont show the drive. This is absurd cuz mostly ppl back up because they want to upgrade their computers . It will never be the same , I mean the OSX , cuz after i have done the back there would have been an upgrade .

see #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it. If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup (especially the destination for the backups), what you've done, and the results.
If that's not the message you're getting, please clarify.
