External hard drive displays error code 22

My Seagate GoFlex external hard drive displays code 22 when I try to initialize it to active status...what is code 22 ?

You should really contact the vendor about this. Try the Seagate Forum. This is not a ConfigMgr issue.

  • External hard drives and Error Code -36

Just wanted to know if anyone knows what this error code means. I tried copying a bunch of video files about 600-700 mb to my USB external hard drive, and this error message popped up and said the disk could not be read or written to. I contacted the manufacturer of the hard drive and they said it was not a manufacturing fault, but an issue regarding the operating system.
Does anyone know why this might be? And also, does anyone know of anyway to get around it?
    Thanks.

You can try DiskWarrior to repair the directory. If DW can't do it, you'll need to re-format the drive. I'd also suggest a zero out erase.
Steps for zeroing the drive Disk Utility:
    1. Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key until you see the spinning gear.
    2. Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3. Choose the entire disk (top icon).
    4. Choose erase tab.
    5. Click on "Security Options"
    6. Choose "write zeros".
    7. Erase
This will take a bit of time because the computer is physically writing zeros to each block.

  • Can't see external hard drive after error code -36

Hi, was copying iphoto data from an WD My Passport 750GB external hard drive to my MACBook when the system said it could not complete the copy as it had encountered a problem and indicated error code -36.  Now I can't see the external drive (or any data) on any computer.  I have tried 3 different MACs to no avail.  The drive makes a soft beeping noise but then stops but the light stays on.
Any ideas on how I can get access to my data??

Make sure the cable is securely seated on the device side.
If that's not the problem, then either the drive mechanism or the enclosure has failed. If you don't have backups, you'd better hope it's the latter. Remove the mechanism from the enclosure and install it another enclosure. You can buy fairly inexpensive USB docks that a SATA drive drops into with no need for disassembly.
Failing that, your only chance is to send the drive to a recovery service such as Drive Savers. They disassemble the drive mechanism in a clean room and mount the platters in another drive. Cost will be in the 4-5 figure range, and the results are uncertain.
If you don't have backups, you don't have data.

  • External hard drive format error!

Hey guys, running Mac OS 10.5.8. Just purchased a 2TB Hitachi XL2000 external hard drive.  I want to use this External HD on both my Mac and PC, and need to format it to HFS+ (for music software reasons) and use it on my PC via MacDrive.  I Followed the instructions given when i first plugged in the drive on how to format it to HFS+
So I went to disk utility, on the left selected "1.8 TB HitachiHDS722020ALA330", there's an indented selection right below that, which is the volume i think.... but I selected what I wrote above which I believe is what you're supposed to do. Under the erase tab, I selected Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the "Volume Format" options. I named the drive and then I hit erase. It begins "partitioning" and afterabout 3-4 seconds it stops and says
    Disk Erase Failed
Disk Erase failed with the error:
    File system formatter failed.
After that the Hard Drive no longer shows up in Finder under Devices. When I shut down and re-connected it I keep getting an error alert popup that says:
    Disk Insertion
The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer
    "Initialize..."  "Ignore"  "Eject"
The drive still shows up under disk utility, but when I try to format it again I get the same error.

    Try this:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • External Hard Drive Permission Error

I've been using a SimpleTech 160 GB external Hard drive for my mac computer for just over a year now. Never had a problem till one day I got on my mac to see the hard drive ejected. So I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it showed up. But since then every time i need to use that hard drive as a destination such as unzipping files, converting movie files and having the output destination as the hard drive, also time machine was unable to back up to it. I started realizing that everytime the output destination would read different then the actual external hard drive. example my hard drive is titled "MegaHD". And normally it would show as desktop/megahd/folder/folder ect. But now it shows, desktop/megahd 1/folder/folder. It adds a 1, some kind of ghost partion or drive. I can't get anything to work.
    What I've done is...
    1) Try repairing the drive, but says the drive cant be repaired cause it's not mounted.
    2) Move everything off and then erase and reformat the drive, then move everything back on.
(Since doing step 2 Time Machine now seems to read it, and when I unzipped files it would say MegaHD 1, but it would still unzip them there. But still get errors from some other programs.)
    3) I contacted the SimpleTech support and they told me to repair the drive. Then when I told them I did already and it accomplished nothing. They told me it was a operating system problem and to contact apple support. Which is why I'm here.
So here I am hoping to resolve this annoying issue. Any help or ideas?

Use the Go to Folder command in the Finder's Go menu to navigate to /Volumes/, drag all of the folders inside to the desktop, unmount it, and then mount it again. This is not a problem with the drive itself nor a permissions issue.

  • External hard drive and errors - 'iTunesMiniPlayer.Resources'

    Hi there,
I've got my music installed on an external hard drive. When I got a new iPod for Christmas, and had to start using another computer, I put all of my music onto this external hard drive. When I installed the program, I also installed it on the external hard drive. I'm thinking this may have been one of the reasons, but I'm not sure.
Here's an error message I've been getting from the beginning-
'iTunesMiniPlayer.Resources' is not a valid short file name
    Fatal error during installation
It's also told me I should reinstall, but I've tried, and with no success. I'm running off of WINDOWS XP. I've also tried to repair via the program install AND in the control panel, with no success. Tried to uninstall via the control panel, again, no success.
My external drive is labeled E, but I didn't choose that, it's kinda how it comes up automatically.
BNoir, or one of the magical geniuses out there in iTunes land, can you give me some tips? I have a hard enough time opening it regularly, but today I tried to add music that I have on CD, and it won't even recognize it.
Another error message comes up about reinstalling iTunes so that it can get CD information from the internet.
    Cheers, and thanks,
    ~ Josette ~

Solved the problem. My external HD is a WD (My Book Studio). I needed to install updated driver manager and this fixed it:

If you have a WD external HD goto the above link and search for your model and a list of updates will be shown, Yay!!

  • Can't update iPod - external hard drive permissions error

I'm trying to change file permissions on an iTunes folder on an external hard drive. I'm able to get to the folder, but when I open the documents info screen, the Ownership and Permission section of it is disabled and I can't change it. I'm the administrator of the computer- there are no other users other than me, so I assume I can change permissions for a folder.
The problem is that all the easy options (I'm no UNIX tinkerer) are grayed out. I don't have the option to lock/unlock, change permissions, etc... because there is no way to access these options. See the screenshot of the folder here:
    http://digital-goddess.com/img/itunes_screengrab.jpg
I have tried changing permissions on the parent of this folder and applying to all subfolders, but that didn't change this folder or my access to it. This folder holds half my iTunes library and throws up an error that I don't have sufficient permissions to update my iPod. This is very annoying and worrisome. Any help?

    Sorry, I forgot one step.
When you expand 'Details' a button called 'Apply to enclosed items..' appears. Click on that to apply all permissions to the files inside the folder.
You can also use a free (donationware) utility called BatchMod to set the correct permissions.
    Hope this helps.
    M
    Edit:
Just realized, you have that folder on an external HD.
Apply the Ownership & Permissions to all contents of the drive to prevent possible trouble with other applications.

  • Faulty external hard drive displays no files

I work at a school IT Helpdesk supporting Macbooks and a student brought in an external HD that appears to be missing files. The HD is a WD My Passport 500GB (FAT32 format). The students says the drive is always ejected properly. You can see the folders on the drive, but the Finder displays nothing in them - I get a spinning circle on the bottom bar. I run Disk Utility on the drive and it says that it couldn't unmount nor repair the disk (see attached image)
Before I decided to do what Disk Utility recommends - back up, format and restore - I opened up Grand Perspective and had it scan the drive to see what's on it. When it finished, the files were visible again. If I eject the drive and plug it back it in, the files are no longer visible. Disk Utility still has a problem with the drive, so I'm going to attempt to back it up first.
Does anyone know what's going on here? Has the entire drive corrupted?

Open Disk Utility on your internal hard drive, select the external hard drive, and run Disk Utility's "Repair Disk" routine. If it finds and repairs any problems, run it repeatedly until no further problems are reported. If problems are still reported after half a dozen Repair Disk run-throughs, you'll need DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to rebuild the hard drive directory effectively.

  • When I went to back up my MacBook to an external hard drive, an error message said the backup could not be completed because an error occurred when creating the backup folder.

I used a backup hard drive for my previous PC, but I have not done a backup on my MacBook yet, which I got this summer. When I hooked it up to my computer, it started the backup fine, and then my computer went to sleep, and so I closed it to let it back up overnight. The next morning I saw that it had been interrupted, and that an error occurred; the backup could not be completed because there was an error in creating the backup folder. I'm not sure what to do now because my data has been erased off of my hard drive now to prepare for the backup on my MacBook, but will I be able to use this hard drive again? Will the error message always come up?  Is there anything I can do to fix it?

I am always suspicious of using a different OS to the one that was used to run the backup.. ie if you used Snow L to backup then there is absolutely nothing wrong with using SL to restore.
Mount the TC sparsebundle and verify it using disk utility.
    A5 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You might also like to load the widget in Time Machine so you get whatever the full error message is..
I cannot find any reference to the error code you are getting..
My recommendation would be to try it on a different computer.. restore the whole backup to an external drive large enough to accept the whole backup.
Use the manual methods pondini recommends.

Use ethernet only. Turn off wireless so it does not enter the situation.

  • Disk utility reports failing hard drive with error code STF/8/3:2 ATA BUS 0

My imac G5 (running Tiger) suddenly decided not to boot past the grey apple screen with the spinning wheel. I ran the disk utility and received error code STF/8/3:2 ATA BUS 0 MASTER on the mass storage test. I tried to run repair and only received a message "fatal hard drive error etc... back up, recover asap... I could not access the disk so I connected my new MacBook Pro by firewire in target disk mode. My HD shows up however, "nothing" shows up under when my "user" file. All I care about saving is my iphoto library. Everything else is trivial. Can someone Please help me? Is there any way I will be able to save this file?

Welcome to Discussions - you can try DiskWarrior and see if it can retrieve some of your data. You can also take it in to Apple with an external fire wire drive you have purchased elsewhere (cheaper) and see if they can transfer the data. You can then install the external into your computer.

  • External hard drive problem, error when transferring files

My old imac special edition started acting weird and the screen was bad anyway, so I bought a mad dog fire wire enclosure and put the 80 gig drive in it and attached it to my FP imac 800. The problem is that I didn't know that it would only act as a storage device and not be able to open up any of the programs that are installed on it, so I have some shifting around to do so that I can get all my programs installed on the imac so that the files on the external drive will work. I have transfered files from the external drive to the imac no problem, but today I tried several times to transfer files from the imac to the external drive, which I have to do to clear up some space before I can do anything else, and it wont let me. It keeps saying error code -51. What can I do to get this to work?
    FP iMac 800   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

There are differences in external volumes, how they were setup, and which Macs they will work on. So much for keeping things simple.
If I remember right, you can't use or have limited use of HFS+ drives on external firewire. On an Intel Mac, it has to be setup using gpt. You can do this using Disk Utility, there is a new option for this.
I had a link that went to macfixit, but the content is now blocked. If I can scare it up again, I will post it back here.

  • External hard drive eject error when computer is asleep

Having some major problems with my iMac. It seems when the iMac goes to sleep I get an error saying the disk hasn't ejected properly. This is not the first hard drive to do so! Several months ago my Buffalo Drive Station would give me that error every night.  This was before I was using Mavericks. I decided to upgrade and from that point on my hard drive wasn't recognized at all. I got the disk restored and bought a new Lacie. Everything has been fine for 2 months and now I am getting the same message on my Lacie Drive!  I'm afraid whatever is going on is going to ruin the new Lacie.
I've seen some similar problems with other user who have said turning off "Put hard drives to sleep" int the Engery Saver preferences works. But I always had that off. Not sure what to do. Can anyone help?
    Running OSX 10.9.2.
    Thanks.
    E

    about once an hour.
That behavior seems somewhat suggestive of the issue described [here|http://www.shirt-pocket.com/blog/index.php/shadedgrey/comments/mackeep_waking_on_its_own_try_this/mac_keep_waking_on_its_own_trythis>.
So I would try going to System Preferences>Energy Saver, and if "Wake for network access" is checked, then uncheck it.

  • External Hard drive getting errors when copying files?

When I'm copying files to my hard drive I keep getting errors that the file is in use.  It was originally stopping at around the 167.8MB mark everytime when I try copying files over and giving me that error.  As this is a 1TB HDD I have no way of backing it up until I get to the US (currently studying in Australia).  So just wondering if anyone had ideas.
    Things I've done:
    - Tried using HDD over Firewire/USB and with other Macs still same errors
    - Tried Disk Utility and sometimes it I get no errors with the disk when I do Repair/Verify Disk or I get an error where the disk can't be unmounted
         - I get that error of unmounting when I normally unmount them and I have to unplug the HDD for it to be readable again.
    - I try copying files from it or to it, and sometimes files copy to my Computer entirely even 2GB ones, but other times it stops at random intervals, and it always   stops when copying files to the HDD that never works, usually stops at random times.  :\
Any suggestions, help, or programs I can use for HDD repair would be great!
    Thanks a lot,

Wondering if I could bump this up a bit, still having problems with it.

  • EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE FORMATTING ERROR

I have a WD External HD and I want to format it to Jorunaled. There is no content on the drive. I go to disk utilities and I change the FAT to Jorunaled and click erased and its says:
Volume drive failed on an error:
The underlying task reported a faliure on exit.
    Anyone know whats up?
    Using a MacBook Pro btw.

Thanks for the replies and tips. I'm not the most proficient at understanding all the formatting options but I also found a way to make it work...
I was finding that using disk utility, only the FAT32 reformat option worked.
However, when opening Time Machine in system prefs, I selected the external drive to try and set it up and it said 'reformat required'. Clicking on erase from within the Time machine set up seemed to work fine and it reformatted no problem.
This seems to get around a bug somewhere because then going back to disk utility and reformatting the same disk from the time machine set up to Mac OS Journaled worked a treat.
I know have both disks working as I originally desired.
    reformat
I have two disks, one for Time machine and one for video storage. However,
