External Hard Drive Enclosure.

Hello,
I would like to take the hard drive out of my macbook which has a damaged display and put it in a case so I can use it as an external hard drive. Which case should I buy? What other adapters or cables will I need?
Thank you.

You can get good case kits here. I suggest either a fire wire or a fire wire / usb enclosure.

  • Need help finding correct external hard drive enclosure for a T61 hard drive

Hi, recently my lenovo T61's video card fizzled out right after the warranty expired. I have information on the laptop's hard drive that i need to get off of it. I have a hard drive enclosure for my old hp laptop's hard drive but the two drive have different connectors. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to find a lenovo T61 hard drive compatible external hard drive enclosure.
The hard drive is a 100 GB 7200 RPM drive
    Model: HTS722010K9SA00
    HDD: 7K200-100
    LENOVO P/N: 42T1056
    HITACHI P/N: 0A53257
    MLC: DA2141

what model is your HP laptop? also how old is it?
Prior to SATA connector there is the PATA connector.

  • Recommended SCSI to SATA converter for older external hard drive enclosure?

I have a SCI external hard drive enclosure that I would like to be able to use a with a SATA drive. Can anyone suggest an inexpensive, reliable SCSI to SATA bridge board?

Those are both good points. It's a really nice enclosure (its a red FW400 drive that instead of being a rectangular box, it has this funky wave shape). I could just use the drive with an existing SCSI drive and make it for something that doesn't need high r/w speeds like documents.

  • Can't format external hard drive enclosure

I connected a 250gb external hard drive enclosure to my mac osx 10.3.9. I was told that it was formatted to windows and that i would have reformat it to mac.
I was given instructions to go to Disk Utility, select the volume and click on the partition tab, but a partition tab didn't appear when i pressed it.
I checked out the info for the volume and this is what it gave me:
    Name : New Volume
    Type : Volume
    Disk Identifier : disk1s1
    Mount Point : /Volumes/New Volume
File System : Winows NT Filesystem
    Connection Bus : USB
    IO Content : Windows_NTFS
    Writable : No
    Capacity : 232.9 GB (250,056,705,024 Bytes)
    Free Space : 232.8 GB (249,976,606,720 Bytes)
    Used : 76.4 MB (80,097,792 Bytes)
    Number of Files : 48
    Number of Folders : 0
    Permissions Enabled : Yes
Can Turn Permissions Off : No
    Can Repair Permissions : No
    Can Be Verified : No
    Can Be Repaired : No
    Can Be Formatted : No
    Bootable : No
    Supports Journaling : No
    Journaled : No
    Disk Number : 1
    Partition Number : 1
Final Cut Pro wouldn't let me use it as a sratch disk because it says it is on write-protected.
Does anyone know what i have to do to get the volume to work.
    Thank you.

Here are some directions for formatting and partitioning a HDD:
    Partitioning a Hard Disk Drive
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel.
Select # of partition in pulldown menu above Volume diagram.
Select 1 partition at a time and resize. (you can type size in the size field in main pane).
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Select each volume, in turn, under Manufacturer ID.
    Select on Security Options button.
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Quit Disk Utility.
Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery has some hints on partitioning.
Please don't hesitate to post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • External Hard Drive Enclosure won't mount

    Hi
I have a Western Digital Caviar WD3200JD 1TB SATA hard drive inside an external startech enclosure
    http://www.startech.com/item-download/SAT3510U2B-35in-USB-to-SATA-External-Hard- Drive-Enclosure-with-One-Button-Backup.aspx
It won't mount on my mac, it won't recognise it in disk utility either
I mounts fine on a PC running Vista. I have formatted it as NTFS but it will still not shoe on my mac
    Anything else I can try?
    Thanks!

my 12 inch powerbook laptop body was no good, but the hard drive was. I had a powermac g4 tower with a bad harddrive. After researching, I found this site and I mounted the laptop harddrive into the desktop and boom! my old laptop drive booted up on the desktop powermac. here is the link. a 3 yr old can install this it is way too easy, plus it cost 99 Cents. way cheaper than buying an enclosure.

  • Issues with external hard drive enclosure

I've been having these issues with my external hard drive since I got it, it seems to be the enclosure
These issues sometimes occur if the hard drive is off but plugged in
-boot will stall after post, before grub
-usb mouse won't work unless I unplug it and plug it back in
-dmesg gives errors about failure to enumerate device
-stalling at other points during boot (continues as soon as I unplug enclosure)
And today, both windows and linux stopped detecting it properly
dmesg said something about a read error.
Then it started working again as suddenly as it started, when I unplugged it and plugged it back in.
Does this sound like a deffective enclosure?

    R00KIE wrote:
I'd say bad power supply (if it has an external power supply).
Two external enclosures have done that to me already (but one is almost certain to do it while the other just started to do it recently), if the HD I have in the enclosure is a bit older (and noisier) I can even hear the HD spin down a little and spin up again, of course that whatever I was doing explodes in the process.
Mind you that the HD is confirmed to be working properly by connecting it inside a desktop pc.
I have couple other power adapters I can try. I got the same enclosure for my dad. I have a brick for a LaCie drive too. (I bought the lacie drive a year ago, but the power supply buzzed loudly. I put in a support request, but ended up returning the drive, and they sent me a new power after that)

  • Mounting thumb drive/external hard drive enclosure on Airport express

For unknown reasons it wouldn't see the external enclosure anymore. It totally did before. Now it doesn't even mount a thumb drive.
Am I doing something wrong? I just plug in the usb port and it should work right?

No way, I formated 1.5TB with my mac. Or did I do it with the USB port on the air?
    Uhhhhh
Are you sure it's for printer only? Because if that were the case that's a very huge crying shame on Apple. I don't want to use up my only on-board USB port for something as dumb as a mere time machine backup drive.
Unless I hook up my bleeding USB splitter, and that's pretty much not what I want, because I am not entirely sure it will power my external hard drive.

  • Help with an external hard drive enclosure

I had a Power Mac G5 that had a motherboard which died. The hard drives were still good so I purchased the "EAGLE Consus D-Series ET-CSDU2J-BK JBOD 2Bay SATA to USB 2.0 External Enclosure". I have it on the setting which both of drives show up on the desktop individually. So far it works and everything is great but I would really like to make it so it combines both hard drives (two seagate 160GB of the same model) into one 320 hard drive. I have a macbook pro running OS X. Do i have to reformat and erase everything before I change it to spanning or can i just switch the jumper and have one hard drive image with all my data still on it? Thanks
Here is the online manual if it helps http://www.eagletechusa.com/Download/ET-CSDU2J-BK_UM.pdf

RAIDing the two will destroy the data on the drive. I'm sure that's explained in the manual.

  • External Hard Drive Enclosures

I recently salvaged a 3.5" ATA Seagate 80GB hard drive from my old eMac and would like to use it as a backup storage device. Could anyone offer suggestions on a reliable and cost effective enclosure that is compatible with my new Core-2Duo iMac. Thanks'.

I use and recommend the enclosures from OWC found HERE. They are a little more expensive, but the stability and quality are worth it.
As long as you get an enclosure with an Oxford chipset, you will have a very stable and reliable drive. I suggest that you avoid the more common and less reliable Prolific chipsets as they have proven to give trouble to Mac and PC owners alike.

  • [HELP] My MSI External Hard Drive Enclosure cannot be recognized by my laptop...

As the subject tells my MSI cannot be recognized by my laptop...
At first I thought that my laptop is the one at fault but i tried inserting it on my friends computer but still doesn't work.
Then I blame the USB connector but tried using it on other devices and it works.
The only one left to be blamed is the device itself.
the model of this device is MSI UH1000-K500
Before this device broke(i guess) I am copying my important files to my PC.
I cant seem to see the drive in my "drive manager".
But I can see it on "Devices and printer"
Can anyone help me how to fix this?
    I really need your help...

    nope it didn't got partitioned/formatted...
I'm sorry for late reply been busy this past few weeks...
I already returned the device on the seller because it is still in warranty period...
    thx for the help anyway...

  • External Hard Drive not in finder, but in Disk Utility, info gone? recover?

My external hard drive shows up in disk utility, but not in finder. Usually, in disk utility, there will be visible the model/make of the hard drive (such as 232.8 GB MDT MD25...etc), and then below that, there be the actual name of the hard drive that I gave it (such as Jack's External Hard Drive). In disk utility, it only has the first one (the MDT... name) and not the other.
How do I fix this situation? Is my hard drive dead? I don't think it is dead because I can hear it spinning and it shows up partially in disk utility. Oh and by the way, it doesn't give me the option of repairing the disk.
    Thanks

Alright, so I bought an external hard drive enclosure. The screeching noise is gone. Disk Utility sees the same "232.9 GB MDT MD25..." stuff, but now also "sees" "ROCK" which is the name I named the hard drive. But the lettering in "ROCK" is gray, not black. Also, its not showing up in finder. When I start up the computer with the ROCK hard drive on, finder says something like, "The disk you have connected was not readable by this computer." I try to verify disk in Disk Utility but it says "Disk Utility Stopped Verifying ROCK because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
So buying the enclosure, helped, but it seems the hard drive is damaged or the information is corrupt or something.
What is the problem I am having? (Is it not mounting or is the data bad or whats going on?)
Is there something I can do right now that can make this all better?
My last resort will be to try data recovering software (last resort because it costs around $100).
Thanks for all your help so far everyone.

  • How to open a library file on an external hard drive

    My old laptop died.
I have my old internal hard disk in an external hard drive enclosure. Now I want to open the home / library/ application support / mail  file on the external drive and copy the emails from it to my new laptop. Option Go shows only the internal library file but it doesn't open the external one. An suggestions on how to do this. I am trying to do a relatively clean install so don't want to use the migration App.

Use the Go to Folder command in Finder, View menu.
Also note that Mail is not in the Application Support folder, but straight in the Library.
The path to your external Mail folder will be in the form /Volumes/<Name of external drive>/Users/<username>/Library/Mail
If you didn't change the name of the old drive, it will be Macintosh HD, also.
I don't know what name it will use for the mount point in Volumes. You may be able to tell by going to Computer from the Go menu.
You can definitely tell by using this command in the Terminal (just copy the whole line and paste it into Terminal):
    ls /Volumes.
Once you know what name it uses, you can fill in the placeholders in the path example above. Use that in the Go To Folder path field.
Note that you can use Go To Folder while in an Open File dialog, also. With the dialog open, type cmd-shift-g.

  • More external hard drive woes.

    Hi all,
I'm using an old Seagate U Series 5 (30GB) that I harvested out of an older computer along with an external hard drive enclosure. It's been initialized and formatted to HFS+ and is at the moment completely empty. However, when I try to transfer large files or large amounts of files (more than around 800MB), it stops at anywhere from 400MB to 1.2GB through and just keeps on displaying the progress bar with whatever estimated time it had left before. Nothing short of unplugging the drive will cancel the operation. This has actually happened with a different hard drive (even older, though) and I've used two different kinds of enclosures. Any ideas?

Shutting down your Mac without properly ejecting your drive (put icion in trash) can fry an external drive. I know, I did it! Maybe you'll have some luck with my tips.
Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
    Here's some more FW tips.
     Cheers! DALE

  • Can I boot my computer from an external hard drive

I have already used the (internal) hard drive to boot my computer. If it is bootable while outside the computer, that is only the (internal) hard drive being outside the computer running while the computer is on then I will buy an external herd drive enclosure so that it can do so.
I want to boot my computer using one of my internal hard drives using an external hard drive enclosure so that I do not wear out the the hard drive ports
I am running a Late 2008 MacBook unibody with Mac OS X (10.6.8). The hard drive I plan to boot from has been used internally and is an ssd hard drive, I formated it before I started using it.

... that part is for using an internal hard drive and as I stated that is the one I am trying to avoid wearing by daily swapping. Not only is it an inconvenience to swap them, but it is not an activity that is usually expected to be performed by most users, so likely this part is not meant to be used for that and that would make it not built for multiple hard drives swaps making it prematurely wear out.
That is exactly correct. We do not do that.
It is not necessary to get inside your computer to connect a hard drive. You can connect a second (or third, or even more) drive externally. And if the drive is correctly formatted, you can boot from it. An external hard drive enclosure costs less than < $10. You install the drive in the enclosure, and you can connect it externally to a usb port on the computer.
A typical enclosure for a SATA laptop drive looks like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/SATA-Hard-Drive-Case-Enclosure/dp/B001AAVA08
In summary then, keep one drive inside the computer. Always. Use any other drives you need as externals. If you have many external usb devices, plug them into a powered hub. This way nothing needs to be regularly connected and disconnected.

  • Time Machine from one external hard drive to another

Hi, I just had the dreadful misfortune of spilling water onto my Macbook Pro over the weekend. It shorted immediately and it's currently drying with some rice. Luckily I was able to take the hard drive out! I already checked that all my contents are fine *whew*.
I bought an external hard drive enclosure to put the hard drive in (it has all my most up to date files). Let's call this poor guy the Enclosed HD.
I also have another external hard drive (La Cie) that I typically use to back things up. I haven't ran Time Machine in a while and really hope to do so ASAP.
I have access to another MBP and I want to use it to run Time Machine to back up the latest files from the Enclosed HD to the La Cie. How do I do this without the computer thinking that I want to run Time Machine with it's internal hard drive?
I appreciate any suggestions. Spilling water on my laptop has already been a nightmare for me the past two days.
    THANKS!

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.
