External hard drive greyed out mavericks

Since upgrading to Mavericks me key working external hard drive has become unreadable. All the data looks like it is there, and the list of folders appear in the finder window, but they are greyed out. (see attached screen grab)
I have tried all my other drives and they are working normally.
I tried this drive with my wifes Mountain lion computer and it worked fine.
The same drive is paritioned with a TM backup as the other part and that works fine.
Any advice? Its probably 1 click somewhere, but haven't been able to find it. I played with the permissions in the info window, but made no differnence.
I really need access to this, so please help.
Thanks

I managed to sort it out, but cant really remember/dont really know how I did it. It was super simple and 1 click of a button. I was just trying loads of stuff to see if I could find it and suddenly it was working.
I was deifnitely from the finder window. Try the buttons along the top, including change the arrnage by. Try the tags button and change the tags to none if you can. Finally try in the top menu "view" and click around in that.
Sorry that this is such a terrible reply, but as I said it just happened for me without really knowing what I was doing. So dont worry, all the data is still there.... just click lots of buttons!

  • External hard drive for maintaining Mavericks after Yosemite upgrade

    Hey guys,
Here's my situation. I have some software that won't be compatible with Yosemite in the fall but I want to be able to continue to use it as I do with Mavericks. Can I get an external hard drive like G aluminum 1T model and run OSX 10.9.4 and this software on it and still upgrade my mid 2010 macbook pro to Yosemite?
    Thanks,
    Mike

After you get the external drive, attach and open Disk Utility.  Choose the new drive from the left sidebar, then in the main panel choose Partition and set the number of partitions you want...you can use the default of 1 if that is what you want.  Then Name the drive so you can spot it on the desktop.  Format should be Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and partition table GUID.  Apply and confirm you want to erase the drive.  Close Disk Utility.
Now, you can use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner (now costs $40 but you can use if for free for 30-days) to make a bootable clone of your current drive on the external drive.  That way you have everything from the internal and you can boot your current Mac OS X if you want to or Yosemite after that comes out.
    You will then have options

  • External Hard Drive Grayed Out?

External hard drive (Lacie) will not mount on finder. It shows up in Disc Utility, but the name is grayed out and when I click on "mount" nothing happens.
Is there any hope of getting that data back?
    Thanks!

Click on the Repair Disk button with that disk selected in the Disk Utility; if the Disk Utility cannot repair it, an utility such as TechTool Pro or DiskWarrior might be able to, or you can try using Data Rescue to recover data from the drive without repairing any errors.

  • EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE CUTS OUT RANDOMLY

    Forum,
While in working in FCP, my external hard drive (G-Raid 2) keeps cutting out - 3 times in the past few hours.
I think it's a bad connection, but I'm not sure.
    Any tips?
    Thank you,
    Trey

Check the cable connections and power supply.
Could also be drives going bad. Does it only happen undwer certain circumstance (when you step away and the computer sleeps, during long renders, etc.?) Or is random?

  • External Hard Drive cuts out

    Hi there,
I removed my 120 G internal hardrive (Maxtor) from my pc, put it in an external box and plugged it into my intel macbook via USB. It appears to have formatted correctly in utilties and I can transfer small files (approx 100 MB) fine but when I attempt to transfer larger files the drive shuts down and switches off, it disappears from finder, I get an error code 36 and a warning about impropper removal of drives.
    What's going on?

    Thanks
The box only supports USB. Also ,I'm not convinced the formatting was completing as I tried various format options in utilities and the drive was shutting down during each format.
Firewire on a caddy was much more difficult to get hold of for use with sata drives. I tried my local retailers with no joy. Hence USB option.

  • How can i run an application from an external hard drive on my macbook air, since I've got less space on my SSD

Ive got a 128GB SSD on my macbook Air and i know as time goes on ill eventually run out of space so i want to know if their suggestions on how to run applications like google chrome, Skype etc on an external hard drive with out installing int on my SSD.

    Double click on them.
You could create Aliases and store them in a convenient place.
Drag the folder with the apps to your Dock and launch them from the folder on your Dock.
Make sure Spotlight indexes your external disk, then use Command-Space -> name of app -> return

  • Backup External Hard Drive with Time Machine

I have several external hard drives and am wondering if I can use Time Machine to backup External Hard Drive #1 on Hard Drive #2? Or is it only possible to backup your Main Machine on an External Hard Drive?
    Thanks

These issues with non-apple format drives that you mention, would they concern the dedicated Time Machine external hard drive, the external hard drive one is looking to backup, or both?
What are the issues raised? My current 500GB external hard drive is FAT-32 and I want to use an additional 500GB external hard drive [fresh out the box so I can determine whatever format it is fairly easily] as the dedicated Time Machine backup. Would you suggest reformatting my 500GB FAT-32 drive before initiating the new drive as the dedicated Time Machine backup? It's possible to do so, but would take quite some time. Also, this may move into a different subject, but I enjoy being able to share files with a PC with Windows XP using my external hard drive; would any of the formats you mentioned as being Time Machine-safe allow me to continue to do so?

  • Time Machine won't backup my external hard drive.

I am trying to get Time Machine to backup my external hard drive.  I have the external drive formated as Mac OS Extended (journaled) and I have also removed the drive from the Excluded list.  I put some 'test' files on the external drive and told TM to do a backup and when it is finished the only way I can see my external hard drive in TM is if it is connected to the computer.  It doesn't seem to be backed up anywhere in TM that I can see.  Please Help
    Thanks.

My thinking is that if my external hard drive craps out it would be ok because it would be backed up on the TM (what I'm trying to get it to do)  How would I open the external drive if it was damaged and then invoke time machine?
#E3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting shows how to do that.

  • How do I encrypt my external hard drive and subsequently a specific file within it, using my Mac? I tried creating a disk image but permission was denied.

Encrypting an external hard drive and specific folders within. Permission denied using disk image.

When I tried to encrypt a single file within the hard drive itself, I got the following: Disk Utility Progress: Unable to create "Name of my file" (Permission Denied).
When I tried encrypting the entire hard disk itself, I got: A GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required.
I have also currently used Time Machine on the external hard drive, along with saving other data. Hence, I am not sure if partitioning is going to delete any of this (a video I watched mentioned that using the + button when creating partitions retains current data). Backing up the external hard drive is out of the option since it is the back up to my Mac.
You can't encrypt a single file. I'm not sure what you did to try. You can make an encrypted disk image which begins with a folder, if desired. Or, you can just create a blank, encrypted disk image, then move your desired files into that.
While you could partition off the free space without erasing the disk, you cannot encrypt it because you need a GUID Partition table which requires you to repartition the entire drive, not just the free space.

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

  • I have an external hard drive that shows up in disk utility but Verify and Restore are greyed out.

I have an external hard drive that shows up in disk utility but Verify and Restore are greyed out. I am trying to determine what is wrong with the drive.
I need the data on the drive and it won't show up in Disk Warrior. I have tried different Mac's and different USB cords only to find the same outcome. When selected in Disk Utility the information read as such...
Disk Description : WD Elements 1023 Media                      Total Capacity : 500.11 GB (500,105,740,288 Bytes)
Connection Bus : USB                                                               Write Status : Read/Write
Connection Type : External                                                     S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
USB Serial Number : 575837314135304D36373132        Partition Map Scheme : Unformatted
As the drive shows in Disk Utility there must be some life left in it surely. There is a possibilty that the physical connection between the USB cord and the external drive is damaged but since the drive shows up I believe it's unlikely... before I give it to the pro's is there anything else I can do to diagnose the issue?

    Hello,
I have just experienced the same thing!
Although my external drive shows in Disk Utility, it does not show in Finder.
And the Verify/Repair buttons are also greyed out.
Also, although the drive is 2TB. DU shows it as having Total Capacity of only 4.14GB! (Which should be the Free Space).
I was wondering if you solved your problem, & if so, would you share your solution.
I´m afraid to Erase in case I lose all my Data on the drive.
Thanks in advance for your reply!

I had ITunes on a Dell laptop.  I copied it all to a Compaq laptop via external hard drive.  The Dell is deauthorized. The Compaq is authorized.  My IPod Classic will not Sync on the Compaq.  I have transferred purchases, but "Sync" is greyed out. How can I get the IPod to sync with the Compaq?

If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
The iPod should appear in the sidebar, under DEVICES.  Select it there.  To the right, its Summary screen is shown.  Toward the top, there is a bar of buttons starting with Summary.  Click on Music next to Summary.  This Music screen is where you tell iTunes how to sync songs ot the iPod.
Check the box for Sync Music.  This is the switch to enable automatic syncing.  If your iTunes music library fits on the iPod, you can choose to sync Entire music library.  Otherwise, you can choose to sync Select playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Then select what you want on the iPod from the lists below.
Click Apply to intiate automatic syncing between that iTunes library and your iPod (based on how the iPod's Music screen is set up in iTunes).

  • New iMac/external hard drive - redirected to play, but song info greyed out, so can't edit?

I have got myself a lovely new iMac and can play music on my iTunes through my external hard drive. I have redirected iTunes to do this. The iTunes media folder is correctly showing as my external hard drive, but when I go in to the song info section, the info is greyed out, so I can't amend the info.
I was wanting to do a bit of house-keeping before importing the whole library, but this problem isn't going to allow it.
I'm also worried I've not imported it correctly so future adds to my iTunes won't go to my external hard drive and will go on to the iMac.
    Any help would be appreciated....

Yeah, library was made with Windows.
How do I reassociate the library?
I noticed that the hard drive is 'you can read only' in the permissions and sharing section - is that the issue?
If I take everything off the h/d and put it on to the mac and then back across to the h/d will that fix. The songs are not 'greyed' out when on the mac's hard drive.
