External hard drive issues. Please help!!!!
hey everyone!
I have a 500GB external hard drive and I've just plugged it in via the USB as I normally do to do some work.
I just had a message come up saying *"the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"* and the options 'intialize' 'ignore' and 'eject'.
I really don't what to do or where to start.
Any help would be amazing!

New itunes is trying to wipe the ipod. But have many many playlists (many hours making) which I want to save. Any help would be appreciated.If you want to just extract the playlists from your iPod, plug it in iTunes. When it appears under devices, right->click on it and choose Export Playlists. Save them to a location such as your desktop and them import them into your library once you have copied and imported all of your music back into it.

PLEASE HELP. =)
we are about 4 minutes into editing a video for the first time on final cut pro x 10.1. everything was going very smoothly, but then it started freezing up. I had to do a hard reset and took it into the computer store that actually installed final cut for us. they suggested that our mac actually is not capable of keeping up with final cut. (I FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE!!) We work on an IMAC 2.66 ghz intel core 2 duo. 8 gb 1067 mhz ddr3. software os x 10.9.1 (hopefully that info will help for your suggestions) Because we have soooooooooooo many hours of high def video, we are working off of two external hard drives.... is this a problem?? or do we really need to upgrade our computer?????Like Russ said, check Activity Monitor and see what else is running and turn off any Applications that aren't needed.
Turn off wi-fi or disconnect the wire that goes to the Internet
Turn off Background Rendering (if you see an orange line on the top of the time line that moves along and gets shorter while you're not doing anything that is a good sign that Background Rendering is running.
I haven't used 10.1 yest but on the previous version there was a small circle approximately in the middle of the screen, about 1/2-inch or 1 cm in diameter, and it would have a number inside. The number is the percent complete of what is hapening. When it is Rendering the percentage will be shown.
Basically, you probably need to free up resources.
For what it is worth, my previous Mac Pro was a 1,1 2.66 machine, also with 8GB of, I think, 667 memory, and it would process FCPX 10.0.9 okay. It did have an upgraded video card, though. -
HI, I updated my software of my Mac Pro to OS X v 10.9.5, after I installed it, my MAC doesn't read any external hard drives. Not sure what to do now. Please help? Is there a way of updated drivers

I just bought a western digital external hard drive with 500 gb since my g4 only has about 14gb left. Ive been noticing my computer has been slower when ive been using certain programs. How can I take off all my music and move it to the external hard drive safely? I have about 20+gb of music and I just thought it would help if I moved it.

How do I move my iTunes Music to an external hard drive? Please help!
I bought an external hard drive and moved the iTunes Music folder from my local hard drive to the external hard drive and now the iTunes library appears empty. I moved all my music back into the local hard drive and the libarary is now full full of music again. How can I move all the files to the external drive and have iTunes retrieve the music from there?

PaulaThis article tells you the proper way to move your music:
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
After a successful move, always connect your external disk, before running iTunes.
Failing to do so will iTunes cause to reset the 'iTunes Music folder location'.
That means your next ripped CDs will be stored on your internal disk.
If that happens, just set the proper location again in the preferences.

My MacBook won't boot to Ubuntu on my external hard drive. Please help!
I installed Ubuntu on my 500 GB hard drive, however, when I hold the option key down at startup to load boot manager, Ubuntu isn't there. The same thing occurs when I look at start up disks in system preferences. The Ubuntu boot loader is installed on my external hard drive.
I know in windows you must access bios to boot from a USB device, Is it a similar situation for Snow Leopard?

On a Mac there is no BIOS. They use EFI instead which doesn't allow that.
Since I have never use Ubunto I am unable to help you, my suggestion would be to repost over in the Unix forum;

External hard drive problem, please help!
I have a SEAGATE external hard drive which I had associated with Time machine so its file system was HFS+ journaled.
when i turn the hdd on a window pop up comes on the screen telling me to either initialize, ignore or eject.
if i go to disk utility the hard disk shows as disk1s2 and that its format is FAT32.
trying to repairing it/fixing through Disk utility gives me the following error

If you don't have any data on the drive, you may want to initialize the disk. Otherwise I would check out DiskWarrior.

I am on tiger 10.4.10 and my external 500 gb buffalo hard drive is NOT mounting in os x. When I go to disk utility it tells me I have no files. I verify disk says its ok.

Hard Drive Issues - Please Help
I have an early 2011 15 inch MBP i7 8gb ram. I was running really sluggishly so I did a complete reformat of the hard drive. That did not work, and even after reinstalling everything manually (not from a time machine backup) it is still really slow. When viewing the finder, it get very different numbers on how much free space is left. Once it said I had 1.2 TB free even thought it is only a 1 TB drive. I have run Verify Disk in disk utility and got:

When I use my start up disk and reapiar it says the repair is successful, but then a week later if I run the verify disk again I get something similar to above. Why is this happening? Is the hard drive bad?

My internal hard drive isn't being recognized on my macbook pro but when I put the HD in my Mac Pro (desktop), the desktop computer recognizes the HD. When I insert the installer CD on my laptop, it also doesn't recognize my hard drive. Please help! Thank you!
I've also been getting an image with the folder and question mark. I've tried everything on the apple support page but it doesn't seem to work either.Well, I tried all of your suggestions and they didn't work -- no surprise because I was trying to backup to my external c.d. disk. Hi Everyone. I have an old Mac Book with software updated to 10.6.8. I have saved a ton of emails in my inbox 'On My Mac'. There are so many it is slowing down my computer. Where do I find the folder with all the emails so I can cut and paste them to an external hard drive? Pls.help. Tks.
Depending on which email client software you use
the files should be in 'your home folder' library, esp.
if you use Mail application.... ~/Library/Mail
Since you don't specify what mail application,
that would most be associated with the file.
I notice there are some items to the right of your post
where it says "more like this' so that may be worth a
look to see if similar issues were answered. Also, the
Help viewer in your system is a searchable database.
Seems that google also brings up fair information, too.
Do you have a complete bootable clone of your entire
Mac system on an externally enclosed hard disk drive?

There's Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant. The cleanest way to do it is Setup Assistant, but you only get that option once when you fire up a fresh install of OSX. If you're past that, you could reinstall OSX by booting with Command-R, or you could use Migration Assistant.

My whole catalogue was nearly lost due to a failed external hard drive. Professional help recovered photos but I can't find my smart tags. Is it possible they were lost on failed drive?

In order to recover the tags/albums, etc, you need to have the catalog db. Since currently you only have images, the organization done in the older catalog is probably lost.
Which version of PSE you have and is there any chance, that you have access to catalog location (default is : %programdata%\adobe\elements organizer\catalogs on Windows and ~/library/app support/adobe/organizer/catalogs on MAC) ?

Please Help - Time Capsule and External hard drive Issues
Recently, I switched from Comcast to AT&T uverse as my internet provider and I started experiencing problems.
(1) I have a 4th generation Apple Time Capsule which I am using as my router.
(2) Connected to the Apple Time Capsule - USB - is an external hard drive (not for backup with Time Machine.)
(3) I have a 2011 Macbook pro which I use to access my file on my time capsule and external hard drive.
(4) I had been using my AT&T portable Hotspot from my cell phone to get internet access on my MacBook pro from remote locations to gain access to my external hard drive which is attached to the time capsule.
(5) On August 2, 2014, I switched from Comcast to AT&T and had the AT&T turn off the router function. (I have been using the router from my apple time capsule)
(6) Under Network I switched to bridge mode.
(7) And since August 2, 2014 my time capsule has not been backup.
THE PROBLEM - I need to be able to use the hotspot function from my cell phone to gain access on the external hard drive using my MacBook Pro which I was able to do before. Now it is showing time capsule under finder but unable to connect.
Do I need to reset my Time Capsule since I have a new service provider. Everything else works fine - meaning able to get internet signal but unable to access my external hard drive and backup my time capsule. Please HELP.(5) On August 2, 2014, I switched from Comcast to AT&T and had the AT&T turn off the router function. (I have been using the router from my apple time capsule)
(6) Under Network I switched to bridge mode.
(7) And since August 2, 2014 my time capsule has not been backup.
If you got ATT to turn off router function in their modem..
Then 6. is wrong.. You cannot have the Network switched to bridge mode..
You must have it set to dhcp and nat.
That is also why you cannot backup.. the TC is off the network.
Please change back to router mode in the TC.
Ensure the internet tab shows dhcp and you create a wireless network.
Then power down the TC... power down the ATT modem.. wait about 20min (you can try 5min.. but it might not be long enough).
Power up the ATT modem.. wait 2min for things to flash lights in de right blinkin order.. then start the TC.
Open the airport utility and make sure your TC captured the public IP and is now working as the router.
That should fix that end of it.. the hotspot end??
