External hard drive losing free space

Hi,
Having replaced my MacBook's stock 80 GB hard drive, I purchased a FireWire drive enclosure so I could continue to use it as a backup drive. I back up my home folder manually, since I don't feel the need to purchase backup software. Recently I've noticed that deleting files on the external drive does not free up the previously-occupied space. Thus, the drive (which is shown to have 74.21 GB of total space) seems to have only 16.28 GB of free space, while both Get Info and du say that only 28 or 29 GB are being used. I'm not sure what the problem could be, or what my next steps should be. Any ideas/solutions?
Thanks in advance,
Larry

Oh wait, never mind. I had checked .Trashes from the Terminal, but usually I had ls set up to display "/" after any directories. There had been one entry in .Trashes, "501", without a slash afterwards. I had thus assumed that this was just a file. I came back after posting and figured I'd run a du on .Trashes and discovered that "501" was in fact a folder of some sort that contained 29 GB of deleted files! After deleting this folder, my drive's free space is now correct.
Thanks,
Larry

  • Why do my external hard drives not free space when I delete things?

I have a Macbook Pro running Lion 10.7. I have a problem where my external hard drives tend not to free up space when I delete items from them. I have been resorting to regularly reformatting my drives for the pen drives, but now it is happening with my large backup drives. It happens for both OS-journaled and FAT-32 formatted disks. Any answers?
Update: I checked the hidden folders, and they comprise:
    .feventsd
    .Spotlight-V100
    .Trashes
There are no sizes given for the hidden folders and it says I don't have persmission to see the contents of the trash.
    Cheers,
    Heather

When you move items to the trash, no space is freed since you're simply moving a file into a different folder (the .Trashes folder). When you empty the trash, the space will be freed. You must empty the trash while the external drive is connected for it to take effect.

  • Want to save my iTunes files in an external hard drive to free up space for next semester

I'd like to save my college music itunes files in an external hard drive to free space for next semester's music stuff.........how to proceed ???? need detailed guidance....thanx

Copy all your iTunes music to external HDD
Finder -> Music -> iTunes and select your library
In iTunes. select iTunes preferences (in top bar of Mac screen) Then click Advanced. Deselect "Copy files to iTunes media when adding to library".
Highlight all your songs in iTunes and delete them. Then re import them, you can just click on the file named music on your external HDD to import all of your songs.
Once they're imported delete the original iTunes library on your Mac HDD. iTunes will now look to your externak HDD to play your music.

  • HT1923 hi, my mac air is really low on disk space, can i remove iTunes (which is huge) to an external hard drive to free up space and then just run it from the hard drive. instead of taking space on the mac? even if the mac no longer has enough to accommo

Hi, my mac air is really low on disk space, can I remove itunes (which is huge) to an external hard drive to free up space?...and then run it from the hard drive instead of the mac, even if the mac no longer has space to accomodate the size of the library?

    Yes.
Copy your music iTunes Library folder to the external drive and change the Advanced settings in iTunes to point to this new location.
Once you're happy with these changes you can delete the same Library from your User account to free up space on the internal drive.

I need to move an iTunes library to an External Hard Drive to free up space on iMac.  I Need suggestions on type of External Hard Drive to use.  Should you use a Multimedia Hard Drive like LaCie LaCinema Classic HD Multimedia Hard Drive OR a standard Large Desktop Hard Drive like Western Digital/Seagate/LaCie?

There is no benefit to the multi-media feature on the first drive you mentioned. If you are going to look at differences between certain drives, I'd look at the differences in reliability first.

  • How do I move my i-tunes to an external hard drive to free up space, how do I move my i-tunes to an external hard drive to free up space

My Mac air is out of space, how do I put my i-tunes library onto an external hard drive to free up space?

Probably the easiest way is to drag the files from the iTunes window to the external drive.  Make sure they have copied.  Delete them from iTunes.  Hold down the option key and drag the copied files back to iTunes.  This will add them back but mapped to their new location and the option/alt key will stop the files from being copied to your Media folder on the internal drive.
In future if you are adding a batch of files in one go you can set preferences temporarily to store media on the external drive, then change back again.  See also:  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

  • Can anyone give step-by-step instructions for moving my iPhoto library to my external hard drive to free up space on my internal hard drive?

I want to move my iPhoto from my internal hard drive to an external hard drive to free up space. Can it be moved entirely and function the same as before with all features and the software itself on the hard drive?  Also, can anyone give step by step instructions on how to do this?  I'm having a difficult time figuring this out on my own by trying to search through Apple support.

  • How do I transfer time capsul data to external hard drive to free up space?

How do I transfer time capsule data to external hard drive to free up space?

The fastest method is straight copy and paste..
Plug a suitable hard disk into your computer.. format it Mac OS extended journaled (if not already).
Select the folders/files you want to move.. copy and paste them to the external drive..
Double check that the files are copied because the next step will delete the files forever.. there is no trash on the TC.
Delete the files on the TC.
You can also do a full archive of the TC disk to a USB plugged into it by USB.. it must be formatted Mac OS Extended Journaled. It must be big enough to hold all data on the TC disk.. best idea is to buy the same size or bigger.. so if you use 2TB TC buy a 2TB or bigger external drive.
    In airport utility select archive.
That will copy everything on the TC disk to the USB drive.. you could then Erase the disk of the TC.. this is super fast if you choose quick erase.. just a few minutes. But the archive will take many hours.. say for 2TB about 12-24hours.. and you cannot use the disk in the TC during that time.

  • XServe boot drive losing free space

A 10.5.8 Server with a full hard drive (zero free space).
Booted from external. Found out most of the space (60GB worth of an 80GB drive) was being occupied by files in /usr/share/swupd/http
Apparently, the Software Update Server had been downloading files for awhile until it filled the drive.
Trashed a couple gigabytes (from a different folder) to free up some space to boot. Turned off the Software Update service. Within a few minutes, the drive filled up again.
    Trashed 20GB from /usr/share/swpud/http
Within an hour, free space was back down to 10GB and subtracting noticeably.
For some reason, Console crashes upon launch, so I can't easily check the logs.
Activity Monitor reveals no suspicious or runaway processes.
Also, Xserve is offline for the moment, so it's not downloading anything from the internet.
Any ideas what's chewing up space?

Do you have some sort of web proxy for filtering? Such as Websense? There seems to be an issue with swupd authenticating through a proxy that causes this in 10.5.8. The solution we used was to disable filtering based on the 10.5.8 machine's IP.

How do I point iMovie to events in my external  hard drive so I can play projects which use them?
    MacBook, iMovie 9.0.4

    Hi
You can do this - by not doing it the way You describe as it will not work.
    a. the external hard disk - MUST BE - Mac OS extended (hfs) formatted -
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - will work for most things - BUT NOT FOR VIDEO (iMovie, iDVD or FinalCut doesn't matter)
    b. Do not alter or move any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
    on DeskTop/Finder - at all
All moving's of Events and Projects must be done within the iMovie Application - then connections will not break.
(move them back and see if iMovie remembers them - then do move as described above)

  • I was going to install Rosetta Stone Spanish onto my Macbook but am concerned about it taking up space on my 2GB hard-drive.  I have an external WD hard-drive; is it possible to put the application onto the external hard-drive to save space on my mac?

I was going to install Rosetta Stone Spanish onto my Macbook 10.6.7 but am concerned about it taking up space on my 2GB hard-drive.  I have an external WD hard-drive, and I was wondering if it is possible to put the application onto the external hard-drive to save space on my Mac?

I think you're confused about how much hard drive space you have.  You probably have 2 GB of RAM...  there hasn't been a Mac shipped with only a 2 GB hard drive in a while.  At the bottom of any Finder window, how much space is available?
If you're actually running low on space, you should move documents to the external drive, since many applications want to be on the system drive.

  • I am trying to burn CDs to an external hard drive to conserve space on our laptop. When I change the file location it says the folder on the external drive is invalid. Am I missing a step?

I am trying to burn CDs to an external hard drive to conserve space on our laptop. When I change the file location it says the destination folder on the external drive is invalid. Am I missing a step?

It does, but that's definitely strange.  Try showing all hidden files and folders on your Mac to see if that helps.
To do this, head to Applications -> Utilties -> Terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE -> Press Enter
    killall Finder -> Press Enter
Then navigate out to your iPod again via the Finder. Any luck now?
