External hard drive & MAC!!!! HELP

I connected my external hard drive (which I have been using with my windows PC the past years) to my Macbook Pro. It showed up as a device on the MAC but wasn't showing up any of the files so i unplugged it and tried it in my PC! Now my PC won't even recognize the drive. WHY? Did I delete all the files from the drive??? HELP pls. I neeeeeeed the files that were on it.

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.
Ciao.

  • HT1338 I was backing up my MacBook with Time Machine on my new (correctly formatted) external hard drive.  It was going fine when my 2 yo knocked the hard drive.  Now TM said "failed" and the Mac refuses to recognize the external hard drive.  Help please?

I was backing up my MacBook with Time Machine and using my new (correctly formatted) external hard drive.  All was going well when my 2 yo knocked the disk leading to a "failure" by time machine (Latest Backup:  Failed).  Now the MacBook will not even recognize the hard drive.  I have rebooted, tried all I can think of, but no acknowledgement of the drive.  The drive itself makes noise and vibrates as if working, but nothing from the Mac.  Please help or $100 down the drain...  Thank you.

You may have already done these resets in the "tried all I can think of " portion of your post.....if not then here they are.....

  • Mac HD back-up to external hard drive Troubleshooting Help!

Last night my MBP was working fine. This morning it would not boot past the white screen + apple + turning wheel + a status bar that only got about 1/5 the way shaded, then disappeared.
What I have done so far:
Command+R: wow. This actually made something else appear! Into Mac OS X Utilities. I currently have no Time Machine backups so that's not an option. Cannot reinstall Mac OS X Lion because, #1) because the drives are locked and #2) I don't want to do that until I have the piece of mind of having everything backed up.
Which leads me to. . .
I just went and bought an external hard drive: WD My Passport Essential SE 1TB. And I am trying to follow apple's instructions to backup the hard drive:
+New Image> Macintosh HD Backup from 3/19> Save to Passport
Goes through about 30 seconds of starting to copy then a pop-up window that says >cannot create ". . .dmg" (error-61)
    Please help!
And once I can back my system up, should I erase the hard drive or JUST reformat it?
First issue with my mac. It's like the first time your puppy gets sick...

I know how important it is to backup your information, Barbaraholch. If you are using an external hard drive to back up your iPhone 5, you would need to use iTunes on a computer. You would first need to ensure that iTunes will be syncing your phone to the hard drive. For assistance with iTunes, you can contact Apple at 800-275-2273.

  • Logic board failure on Mac Book Pro. Backed up info via time machine with sea gate external hard drive. Help!

I now have no access to any mac now, and the old mac while it still has my old information freezes immeadiatley upon starting. I am therefore switching to PC laptop that has be graciously given to me. My question is how do I get my information off my external drive, and on to my new laptop? The laptop is an Asus with windows vista, and I am planning on upgrading it to Window's 7. All my information from the past 3 years of college is stored in this Seagate 320 gb external hard drive. What do I need to do?

OK… firstly try the USB port on the other side and see if it makes any difference. Otherwise, do you have any better luck using the drive when it's connected through an AC powered USB hub.
To check if your MBP is seeing your drive at all it should appear in the USB section in the System Profiler utility.

  • Having **** trying to export films from itunes to an external hard drive! HELP!!! My mac air is FULL!

I have followed every article to the letter and can see the movies file sitting in my external hard drive, but when i click on a film SPOTIFY opens up! No film to be found anywhere!! What am i doing wrong? My mac air is full and wont run applications at the same time now!
    Thanks

What icon is present on the files? It sounds to me like you have your movies associated with Spotify as the opening application.  Get info on a file in Finder, then change the open application to iTunes, click on the "open all of this kind" button to use iTunes to open all files of that type with iTunes.

  • IS it possible to share external hard drive Mac To Mac, over a PC network,

I would like to explain this situation in it's own post so it's clear. I am at my brother's house (PC user) and both my wife and I are Mac users who are on the network. I have an external hard drive which is plugged directly into my wife's Macbook. I am trying to access it from my Macbook pro. This is my first time sharing and this is what I have done:
I went into "sharing" on her Macbook and turned file sharing on.
I added the mounted drive as a 'shared folder' and made everyone able to read and write.
Under 'options' I checked all of the boxes, including AFT, SMB and FTP (was I suppose to do this?)
Now, when I am on my Macbook Pro I look at the network and I see the PC network server, and her Macbook there (along with another weird network folder called "Mac001ff3cdf6ff", which I'll get to in a minute)
When I click on her computer and connect, I see the folders there which I've previously been able to share.
However, there is no external drive to be seen, even though it is mounted on her desktop of her Macbook downstairs.
When I go back and connect to this strange network folder called "Mac001ff3cdf6ff", however, I see again all the folders that I see when I click on my wife's Macbook folder AND the external hard drive..which is great...BUT, why can't I see this when I click on her Macbook folder? I did notice too that the icon is a PC icon for "Mac001ff3cdf6ff" when I click on 'more info, says "PC server".
Does this mean that the only way for me to access the external hard drive is through a PC server and this is the 'long way around' to get into the external drive? And why can't I connect directly from my wife's Macbook icon in the network folder?
Help please! Thank you. I hope this is more clear.

Is there anyone out there who has had success with sharing an external hard drive over a network from Mac to Mac? I just can't figure this out! It's so weird. When I look in the network places I see the icon for my wife's computer, and the PC ones of my brother in law's drives connected to the network. And ONE of those PC icons (you know, the one with the blue screen of death on them?) is labeled with "mac934ffsg" or something similar. I've been experimenting and when I add the hard drive in "shared", or if I add another folder in 'shared' on her computer it is THIS icon in the network that is updated.
Does anybody come close to my situation? Is there anyone sharing a couple different Macs over a network set up with PC's?
    This is driving me batty...

  • I can't copy files to External Hard Drive : Please help..

    Evening,
I've just bought a Macbook and am just getting to grips with it. This is my first question on this forum...the first of many no doubt.
Problem I've got is that I can copy file's from an external hard drive on to the MAC but I can't go back the other way and copy file's from the MAC on to the external hard drive - it says 'New Folder cannot be modified'.
When I go into 'Ownership and Permission' of the external hard drive it says I can read only.
The Hard Drive is a Octigen USB 2.0 drive if that helps..
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help

How confident are you that MacFuse/ntfs-3g is a reliable option for ordinary humans? It is at version 0.2.2, not long out of beta, the FAQ mentions slow write performance and other rough edges (possibly fixed in the current version), and this is a comment by the author as of 1/11/07:
"Small disclaimer: Please note that MacFUSE is a complex piece of software, and it is a work in progress. We believe in releasing early and often, so we're releasing it now so that the community can help us to make it more robust."
I have no need for it whatsoever, but if I did, I would have concerns about using it for a backup drive.

  • Not Recognizing External Hard Drive Mac Book Pro

    Good Day!
I have a 2010 Mac Book Pro that I just downloaded the neww OS X Lion for the upgrades ext... I haven't had any other problems exept that before I downloaded the Lion my Mac would recognize my external hard drive (WD passport).  And now it doesn't, I even go to the finder and it doesn't even show up under "computer"  to make sure there isn't anything wrong with my external hard drive I plugged it into another mac that doesn't have Lion and it would work.  Please Help because my external drive has everything 1TG of everything...
    Thanks!!!

    Hi,
I had already checked in Finder's Pref's for the check mark for External Disks and it is checked.  That is for external disks to show up on your desk top.
So still no luck for my Mac to reconize my external hard drive with this new OS X Lion Program.  Should I just take my computer into the apple store?
    Thank you!!

  • External Hard Drive/Mac & PC

I've read some of the posts on this topic and want to be sure I'm not messing this up.
I want to buy an external hard drive, but I want to use it on both my iMac and my wife's PC. I've noticed that the instrux for the Western Digital drives talk about formatting the HD for either/or, which would seem to be problematic.
So the two questions I have are:
-Does the external drive NEED to be formatted?
-Are there any issues overall with using the hard drive this way?
    Thanks,
    Steve
20" iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, the external drive needs to be formatted. However, to use the drive on both the Mac and a PC the entire drive must be formatted for the PC. PCs cannot read or write Mac disks. OS X can read and write MSDOS formatted disks (but not NTFS formatted disks which are read-only to OS X.)
Use Disk Utility to prep the external drive. Open DU and select the external drive's main entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of partitions to one (1) equal in size to the full capacity of the drive. Click on the Options button and select the Master Boot Record partition scheme from the available choices and then click on the OK button. Set the format type to MSDOS (FAT32) then click on the Partition button. Wait for the volume to mount on the Desktop.
Note that OS X and MSDOS use different filesystems. MSDOS does not handle the long file names supported by OS X. Some Mac files contain special resource forks that will be lost when files are saved to an MSDOS formatted disk. If you plan to save Mac data it's a good idea to archive the files before transferring them to an MSDOS formatted drive.
You also cannot use an MSDOS formatted drive as a boot device for OS X, so you cannot clone OS X to an external drive formatted for MSDOS.

  • External Hard drives Mac OS and Windows

I have a question on external hard drives. I am looking for an external drive that will work with both my Mac and Windows xp pro. I remember that Mac used to be able to read windows format but not vise versa. I know that thumb drives switch back and forth with no problem but it seems that hard drives do not. I went to the store and was told and the boxes state that the windows drives must be reformatted to work with Mac and the WD Mac drive said that it must be reformatted to work in Windows, (as I expected). Is this something new between the OS's or something to do with the drive sizes? Any help would be appreciated as I would like to be able to move large files, usually movies, between the two formats by simply moving the external drive from one to the other.
    Thank you

If you reformat that flash drive to use +Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)+, it will probably work. But then, you would not be able to use it on the Windows PC (until you reformatted it again).
then probably the best option although more expensive will be to buy an ethernet drive and connect to my router.
Or maybe you can do a direct transfer from PC to Mac or Mac to PC over wired Ethernet, and put the extra storage drive on the Mac or PC, formatted to be optimal for the respective connected OS. If your PC has gigabit Ethernet (and your router is has gigabit ports), it should be fairly fast. Make sure the cables are rated Cat-5e or better.
Wow another Power Mac 8100 user who added a G3 card to it.
Still a machine that is set up and runs fine, for using my old Mac OS 9 programs. I bought mine used after it was already a few years old, but it was used as my primary Mac longer than any other machine before or since. It stayed relevant for a long long time.

  • My Macbook Pro won't let me use my external hard drive anymore, Help!

Every time I go to time machine it has my internal hard drive as the back up drive, when it should be my external hard drive. When I tried to select my external hard drive it doesn't do anything, it goes right back to the internal hard drive. Time machine and my external hard drive had worked the night before and I havent had any problems backing it up until I loaded Mountain Lion. I dont know if that could be one of the reasons or not. Also the hard drive is almost full, however I thought that this couldn't be the problem because I have it set to automatically delete stuff when full. Also the ownership is not set and I can't enable it. I have looked around and there is not an "ignore ownership" box to check from get info... I am lost and somewhat new to macs so any help would be appreciated.

if she's not the only person with Mac and this problem - go to school network administrator, something wrong.
If there are other people with macs and without this problem - compare network settings.
Also disabling 'Stealth mode' can help sometimes.
see p8 here to find setting.

  • Using an external hard drive?help

my hard drive on my laptop is full so i purchased a 30gb external hard drive to serve the purpose of containg all my itunes library.i have dragged my entire library over to the external drive and has successfully duplicated in the external drive.my main problem is when i delete the original folder and go to play the songs in itunes it shows the exclamation mark beside the track saying it cannot be located...obviously it can be located in the external drive but it will take an age to locate every song seperatly?surely there is a better and more efficient way to do this?please advise?

This is the preferred method to move the Library to an ExHD while keeping iTunes 'in-the-loop'. If you can move the files back to where they were and recover your Library, then using it will help.
If you want to make another drive (direct or portable) on your PC the main music location for iTunes, move all song files there, as well as any future imported music from CDs, here is one method (see the links below):
You will maintain your playlists, ratings, comments, etc. This will
    i only
    move your music folders location,
    i NOT
your iTunes program files. It is my opinion that programs (i.e. – iTunes) work better when installed on your main hard drive. At the very least, it makes it easier to manage all your programs if they are centrally located on one hard drive (the Windows default standard).
See these links for step-by-step info:
Moving your iTunes Library to a New Hard Drive
MacMuse, "Move iTunes music/Library to new drive", 12:34pm Oct 12, 2004 CDT
If you are moving the music to an external hard drive, after the transfer and to work correctly, the ExHD must be running prior to your opening iTunes. If not, iTunes may reset the location of your music to the default.
OR -- If you do not have a large investment in playlists, ratings, date added, last played attributes, you can 'Refresh' your Library as this post details: Buegie, "Songs "could not be found"" #17, 09:12am Oct 26, 2005 CDT

  • Problem running Itunes from external hard drive- Please Help!

So, last night I transferred my entire music folder over to an external hard drive. It copied all the files and I then proceeded to tell itunes where my new music folder was located. The problem I ran into was when I actually deleted the music files from my internal hard drive my library won't automatically find the files. When I click on a song it comes up with an error message saying, "original file cannot be found, would you like to locate file?". If I tell it yes, I can then manually tell it where the file is, and it will play. I'm really hoping there is an easier way around this issue because going in and doing this for every song in my library would take years. Should I clear out the library and then drag it from the external hard drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.
    Sean

I am experiencing a similar problem. I already had all my files on an external drive, where I had transfered them a few months back, and everything was working fine. I have now moved them, again, to a larger external drive, did everything the same, but now receive the message "original file cannot be found, would you like to locate file?" I was advised to use the "add to library" button under "FILE" in the menu bar and all the music was finally imported into iTunes, but the problem now is that the new data on the music files is missing all the metadata, and I am still stuck with all the original files with the "!" in front of each file that is going to have to be manually deleted one file at a time, all 30,000 of them. I would like a way to start over and get it right the first time. Anyone have any solutions? I have found a program, "Super Remove Dead Tracks" which should solve the problem of eliminating the "!" tracks, but so too all the metadata. Ideally I'd like to be able to locate the original files with all the attached metadata and get back to where I was 24 hours ago.
