External Hard Drive no longer working

Hi Everyone,
I am hoping for a positive response.  I have a SimpleTech (SimpleDrive) Model 96300-40001-001 external hard drive that I have been using for about 2 years now.  The drive has extermly important information on it.
I just returned from vacation and attempted to reconnect my drive, using it's standard USB Cable, and received the error message of, "The disk was not ejected properly."  After reading several previous topics, I attempted to do the following, with negative results:
Reset SMC and PRAM
Change USB Cable
Change Power Supply
Attempted to do Disk Repair, although, unable because the computer would eject the drive
When I first did a PRAM reset, I was able to double click on the hard drive from my desktop and see it's contents on the drive, but, when I tried accessing any of the files, I received the error message once more, (The disk was not ejected properly).
I am currently running a MacBook Pro, Mac OS X, 10.6.8, 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 4GB of Memory.
Any advice or suggesstions would be exteremly helpful, as I am trying to access the information left on this drive, which are very important.

Hi, Glenn900. Welcome to the Discussions.
Assuming the hard drive mechanism itself isn't damaged (and that's a big assumption given what you described) the partition map of the drive may be damaged if it was connected to your computer and running when it went for its flight.
The partition map on a running, mounted external hard drive can become corrupted if the external drive is disconnected or powered-off without first being Ejected.
I frankly think there's a good chance that the drive may be damaged if it is not a portable external drive, i.e. one specifically designed and somewhat hardened for carrying around. The enclosure for a conventional, desktop-oriented external hard drive is not hardened, meaning they generally don't respond well to becoming projectiles.
However, if there's a chance to recover any of the data from the drive, my "Data Recovery" FAQ may help you with this problem.
Good luck!

My La Cie Porsche Design External Hard Drive USB 3.0 is no longer working with Time Machine.  Is Yosemite the cause?  How do I fix?

Can you see the drive in Disk Utility? If so, try selecting it and using the Mount button in the top menu. You can also run repair disk and repair permissions.

  • External Hard Drive No Longer Working After Being Removed From Mac

The following issue is happening to two other mac users that i know and its quite frustrating.
So if an external hard drive is not ejected properly from a mac, it then cannot be recognised by any other Mac’s. This issue is not isolated to just one external hard drive.
Then if i plug the external hard drive/s into my 8 year old Dell (PC) it works fine.
Further to this when i check the hidden files on the PC it looks as though Old Apple imbeds the external HD with a bunch of useless hidden files, once these are all deleted it miraculously works  again on the Mac’s.
Too bad if you only have a Mac Because if the Mac disk utility can read the External HD it says that the disk has crashed and needs to be replaced.
    Nice one Apple...
    So now for my questions.
Why does mac add hidden files to an external hard drive when not ejected properly that prevents it from operating again on a Mac ?!!!!
How do i prevent apple from adding these hidden files?

Can you see the drive in Disk Utility? If so, try selecting it and using the Mount button in the top menu. You can also run repair disk and repair permissions.

  • External hard drives no longer working in Mavericks - HELP!  I need my data...

    Hello
I recently upgraded to Mavericks (10.9.2) and this morning I was trying to find some files so connected my external hard drive (back-up 1).  Light went on...nobody home.  The drive didn't register as it had done last week.  In my hurried state I plugged in external hard drive 2 (back-up 2) and the same thing happened.
Not phased by this I took my hard drives to work and tried them in my PC and also a friend's mac (not upgraded).
Annoyingly I cannot access anything, in fact they don't even register existence even though they are whirring with the lights on.
Please help! I need my data

    Hello AstroTravel,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your external hard drive.  I found an article with steps you can take when an external device is not being recognized.
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the following article:

  • Why does my external hard drive no longer work

I have a toshiba 1tb external hard drive on which I back up my Toshiba lap top. This morning when I tried to do this both USB ports on the laptop died. Thats a very short explanation for what has taken some time to establish. To get them working again I have to reboot the laptop & then I can use my wireless mouse & keyboard etc. Attach the harddrive again everything dies.
Now the point that got me to this board is that I gave my hard drive to a colleague to copy some files (which he did) but he runs a mac! Has his mac killed my hard drive & done something that somehow means when it plugs into my laptop it kills the USB drives on that too?

Bob you might just be right. He might have killed the cable though. I've managed to find a similar connection & I now seem to have access. Is that a natural breeding rainbow or one of those bloated stockies?

  • My Seagate Expansion 500GB external hard drive no longer works with my Mac

    Hi
i have had a seagate expansion hard drive for the last year ish and it has worked as a time machine without any problem. when i first got it i had to format it to windows but that was simple and worked well. recently i unplugged it for a few weeks and have recently plugged it back in. now it won't register as my timemachine or show in finder.
I went into disk utilities and clicked 'repair' then click 'verify and these are the two errors i recieved.
Verify and Repair volume “Jon & Sarah Time Machine”
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.

I am hoping that someone has had the same issue and is able to help me with this problem.
all my back ups are on the hard drive so i really don't want to have to format it as i don't know what i will lose.
I have checked for updates for my Mac and it says there are none.
    cheers
    Jon

You need something stronger, such as DiskWarrior, to repair the HD.

  • External Hard Drive no longer working. Repair disk not working

It appears in the finder, but says I should take everything off of it and restore it.
Weird thing is, it says it's a 465GB capacity, and 236 is available, with 56,708 files on there, but it says 0 items in the finder, so it can't see everything.
I have important stuff backed up on there, but it's not loading.
Disk utility won't repair the disk, and the repair disk permissions are greyed out.
Incorrect number of Access Control Lists
The volume KYLE-HD could not be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
Those are what I get when I try to repair disk
Also for owners enabled, it says no, not sure if that is impt. or not.

    I'm experiencing a similar issue...
In the middle of copying items from an external drive (ironically, to reformat and enable Time Machine), finder popped up a 'Device Removal' warning... and the two volumes (partitions) of my external HDD disappeared and would not remount. (Disk Utility would not show the drive or volumes.)
I disconnected, powered down the drive and tried reconnecting - same problem... volumes wouldn't mount and Disk Utility showed no disk (despite the hdd showing up under system profiler just fine).
Tried again, and got the problems Kylecool is describing.
Luckily, most of what I wanted to get off the drive had already copied... there's just one more essential (iPhoto library... yes, I have a backup - but I spent a few hours a couple of days ago integrating two libraries into one [a painful process that I don't want to repeat]...).
I'm in the process of copying the library now, and will then reformat - so hopefully no great loss... but thought I'd add my experience to that of Kylecool's as it may be an issue with 10.5?
    (HDD is connected via FW400.)

  • External Hard Drive no longer showing in Devices

My external hard drive no longer shows up as a device on my MBP. It has worked fine since the day I plugged it in.
The Time Machine is using the HD, and continues to do it's backups, so power and USB connection is not an issue
The HD shows up in Disk Utility (The Time Machine portion AND the partition that I've been using for storage)
I ran a repair on the partition in Disk Utility and it checks out OK
I can access this partition from VMware Fusion, so the windows side of the MBP sees it, and it's operational
Used the HD all day yesterday without issue
I've restarted the MBP to see if it would find the HD partition after a restart, it doesn't
I've unplugged (USB) and powered-off the HD, and when I power-on, it still isn't seen.
    Any ideas?
    John

If TM is turned on and it still doesn't show up then do a SMC reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • 120 GB External Hard Drive no longer readable

My 120 GB external hard drive has been working perfectly fine on my new macbook pro. I just updated to OS X v. 10.5.2. Ever since, my external hard drive is no longer readable by the computer. I would like to set it up with time machine. I tried to connect the HD to another mac and a PC and it cannot be found by any computer. When i plug it into my computer, it brings me to the disk utility but I haven't been able to do anything to it. I don't really care much about the information on it as it is just backup stuff and my computer has it saved. Is there any way to format the drive and make it workable even if it is unreadable and can only be seen through the disk utility?

It only resets the machine's parameter RAM to the defaults (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238 for details) which will necessitate resetting those preferences, but they're minimal. It could well be that the ext HD's gone south, but since it was usable prior to updating, it's worth a shot. If that doesn't allow you to see the HD, then you'll need something more powerful, such as DiskWarrior or TechTools. If those can't allow you to access it, then if there's stuff on it that you want to recover, you'll need something like DataRescue and even that might not work.

  • I have a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2 Yosemite. My external hard drive no longer appears on my screen or in Time Machine

I have a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2 Yosemite. My external hard drive no longer appears on my screen or in Time Machine. I have gone into Disc Utility to repair disc, and get the message: Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found. I was trying to follow Melophage's instructions by going into "Terminal" and entering  "diskutil list; diskutil cs list; mount"  and "diskutil info disk2."  Then I entered the command "sudo got show disk1."   I am sure I have made the problem worse. Can you give me some help?  Thank you. blelambert

You mean you transferred the media, not the library...
Now I have a laptop - but I can't get itunes to pick up the library location
The library location is in your /Music/ oflder.
Your media files (not yet in your new iTunes library ) is on the external drive.
I have changed in advance preferences, but the library does not display.
Because you have not yet added anything to your library.
    Quit iTunes.
On the external, create a new folder named My iTunes library (or something).
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select My iTunes library on the external.
Go into Windows Explorer and move all the media files on the external into /My iTunes Llibrary/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.

  • External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.

External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.
I have the latest Airpor Time capsule 2gb. I specifically bought it so that I could have an external hardrive set up to wirelessly house my itunes library and movies. When i connect the drive, all i get is that the disk needs to be repaired.
the drive can works fine when connected to the macbook pro and I have run the verify and repair features in disk utility. I have also reset the airport timecapsule as well following these changes and still no change.
The 7.7.2 update says that it addressed the usb issue of not showing the drives but there are still problems as I cannot get it to appear.
    Please help.
    Thanks

How is the hard drive formatted?
Have you tried using a powered USB hub with the drive when it is connected to the Time Capsule?
(The USB port on the Time Capsule is borderline as far as power is concerned....you may need to use a powered hub.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply)
If the drive is formatted correctly....and....it has ample power, it will "show up" when you open AirPort Utility, click Edit, then click the Disks tab at the top of the next window.
In the example below, my Time Capsule drive is named "Backups" and another drive named "WD Drive" is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
You should see the name of your Time Capsule drive (named "Data" unless you have changed the name) and the name of the USB drive if you perform the same check.
    What do you see?

    Gives ?j

Maxtor, must be an old one.
There is a disconnect occurrence in some cases with FIREWIRE ext. HD and Mavericks.
(indications mentioned on the Mavericks board)
This is known and being looked into.
Ive looked into this much myself.
Suggest using another Mac and offloading data onto a USB3 and using same until there is resolution.
Any normal USB ext. HD is working fine.

PS. Maybe its important, I use it for Time Machine as well. Before I used that, it deleted my whole hard drive whitch really ****** me off. Now I got new stuff on it. Maybe my Mac is just claiming it to keep the hard disk for itself?

    One can't read the other.
Just to be clear Mac's can read/write FAT32 but windows cannot use OS X Extended. So to use a drive on both systems it needs to be formatted FAT32
FAT32 does have limitations and possibly the best solution is to use NTFS, a more modern, robust filesystem. The drawback here is that OS X does not natively read NTFS so a third party kernel extension is needed.
