External Hard drive "not readable", does not show up in Disk Warrior either. Help me, please!

I have a 500gb G Drive Slim that is almost brand new. I accidentally pulled the cord out when it was connected, and now when I try to open it, it says "not readable by this computer." This is what I see when I go into disc utility:
I called G Drive, and they told me to download Disk Warrior 4. I did, and this is what I see when I open it:
My hard drive doesn't show up...i'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong but I just paid $100 dollars for this and I'd really like some help. I read the manual and it wasn't helpful at all.
Please help me!

Make sure it's format is Mac OS Extended (Journeled).
To check it's format, plug in the External HDD and search Disk Utility in the spotlight. Click the External HDD and go to the Partition tab. If it isn't Mac OS Extended change it and format it.
You shouldn't need any of these external applications to use it. I have one and use it like a flash drive.

  • Didn't eject my external hard drive now it will not reconnect

I just got my MacBook Air, been using a PC up until now.  Earlier this morning I plugged in my external hard drive and transfered some music onto my MacBook Air.  When I removed my external hard drive I didn't not eject it, now when I plug it in my MacBook does not even see it.  I tried different hard drives and I can see them. I even tried using that hard drive on my old PC and it works. How do I get my MacBook to recognize the hard drive again?  Still new to the whole MacBook experience.

I did the same and was able to see it in Utilities, but not mount it.  I read this article and followed the steps and it fixed the problem http://osxdaily.com/2013/05/13/mount-unmount-drives-from-the-command-line-in-mac -os-x/
    Utilities - Terminal
Type:  diskutil list  to find your drive (mine is disk2s2)
Unmount the drive:  diskutil unmount /dev/disk2s2
Mount the drive:  diskutil mount /dev/disk2s2
The drive immediately appeared on my desktop allowing full access with no damaged files or corrupt disk.

I did not create the file to be read-only. I created to be able to continue to add to it as I work on it.

I'm having some difficulty with Time Machine.  It appears to be deleting backups from random dates on my external hard drive.  I am not deleting them.  Are they hidden and how do I prevent this from happening?  Can I retrieve them?

... I didn't know that Time Machine was more a last resort back up instead of main back up.
Don't rely upon Time Machine to the exclusion of all else. I compliment Time Machine with a periodic "clone". TM is much better than nothing, but it's a safety net, not a hammock
Here is my understanding of Time Machine's file deletion algorithm, distilled from Pondini's FAQ, Apple's KB articles, and my own observations.
Time Machine deletes ("thins") files from the backup disk as follows:
Hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first backup of the day
Daily backups over 30 days old, except the first backup of the week
Older backups get deleted when Time Machine requires space and you deleted them from the source disk.
Therefore, assuming TM has been performing at least one backup per day, backup files will remain available:
at least thirty days, if they existed on your Mac for at least a day
until you run out of space, if they existed on your Mac for at least a week
In addition to the above, Time Machine always keeps one complete copy of your source disk so that the entire volume could be restored if necessary. Any files that remain on your source volume will be present on the TM backup, no matter how old they are.
If you are using 250 GB of space on your source disk, its Time Machine backups are likely to require at least twice that much. A good estimate of the minimum required backup volume size would be about three times the size of your source disk - 1.5 TB in your case.
A more thorough explanation would require Pondini since he has plumbed Time Machine's mysteries far more than I have.

Trying to move my iTunes Music and other media from the main drive on my pc to an external hard drive but iTunes is not recognizing the new file location?  Ideas?

    Hello there, Underwriter.
The following Knowledge Base article provides in-depth instructions on how to migrate your content to an external drive:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
Particularly of note for your situation:
    External drive
This option requires more work than Home Sharing, but it creates a backup of your iTunes library on the external drive in addition to moving your content.
    Notes before you start:
You can use most iPods as an external drive.
Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Because of this, you can't use a Mac-formatted iPod or external drive to move your music to a Windows PC. See iPod: How to determine iPod's hard disk format if you're not sure how your iPod is formatted.
Mac OS X can read Windows-formatted iPods and drives. This means there are many ways to migrate your information from your old Windows-based PC to your new Mac.
Mac OS X: To be sure external drives appear on your desktop, choose Preferences from the Finder menu. Be sure the options for "External disks" and "Hard disks" are enabled.
Part 1: Locating and consolidating the iTunes Media folder
Part 2: Copy iTunes folder from the old computer:
Part 3: Get iTunes ready on your new computer
Part 4: Back up any music that's already on your new computer
Part 5: Copy music to your new computer
Part 6: Add preexisting music that was on the new computer back into the library

    NTFS is your problem.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.
    See this article

What are you using to search? You should be able to search any drive in from the Finder. If you're having trouble, try "EasyFind" from the App Store (free). You can search any volumes with it.

Format the external drive for your PC. Connect it to her computer after that but do not format it. It will appear on her desktop if you have selected that in preferences. Use Finder and drag the files you want to copy from her computer to the icon for the external drive.

  • External Hard Drive doesn't mount, not showing in Disk Utility

I have had this Western Digital external hard drive for a few months now and until this evening it worked fine. It won't show up on my Macbook Pro and it is not present in the Disk Utility section. The light on the external hard drive is on so it doesn't appear to be a power issue. I have another of the same exact hard drive and it works fine. I tried switching USB cables and even power supplies and I can't get it to work. Does anyone know how to recover the files or is the hard drive toast?

Something's wrong inside the case; it's either a problem which is preventing the computer from properly connecting to the drive or the drive itself is dead.
Data recovery from a failed drive can only be done by a professional service, which can charge hundreds or thousands of dollars.

  • New cube laptop - not showing Maxtor external hard-drive in windows explorer, but showing up in Device manager.

    Hi
If anyone is able to give me some advice I'd really appreciate it. I have seen similar issues on here and tried uninstalling then re-installing the driver which seemed to fix the similar issue on someone's Windows 7 system but it doesn't seem
to have worked for me. I also tried using the usb 2 drive rather than the usb 3.
I have a new cube laptop with Windows 8 (which I'm not used to yet at all) and am trying to access the files from the Maxtor hard-drive from my old pc. The hard-drive does not show up under file explorer but seems to appear in device manager. The
laptop makes noises occasionally as if it is detecting some hardware but not showing it.
    Can anyone suggest a fix?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    Apologize for the late reply.
How about the situation by now?
Could the external hard drive be shown in the
    disk management?
Or take a look at the format of that hard drive(list disks) with diskpart command:
A Description of the Diskpart Command-Line Utility
Check if the format is NTFS.
Also please take a look at the following article:

    Hope this may help

  • I have tried transferring my iphoto library to my external hard drive and it's not working.

I have a Macbook Pro. I have recently gotten into photography and to save space on my internal hard drive, I bought an external hard drive to keep all of my photos on. It's a Toshiba with 1 TB of memory. I have searched and searched on how to transfer my iphoto library to it and I'm getting the same answer. I open two finder windows, one with pictures open, the other with the external hard drive open. I have tried to drag the iphoto library icon to the second window to the external hard drive and instead of it staying there and loading everything it gives me the circle with a diagonal line through it and floats back up to the pictures finder window. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I really need help!

you need to make sure the drive you are moving the iphoto library to is formatted in the mac OS extended journaled format
you can view and/or change this in the disk utility which is found in the utilities folder in applications within finder.
on the left side select the external HD and then click on the erase tab it will show you the format it's currnetly in, if it's not mac OS extended journaled select that from the drop down and then hit the button that says erase.
after the erase is complete try the article i gave you again to move the location of the lbrary and it should work.
    good luck

  • External hard drive time machine backups not mounting

I have used Seagate 500.11 external hard drive as a backup location for the time machine for over two years. I just got a message that it had not updated in over thirty days.  It is not listed on FInder, but it is listed on the disc utility.  The Time machine backups  are grayed out on the disc utility screen and cannot be mounted, even after the repair and verification tests said that their volumes were ok.  What should I do?

Time Machine does not create bootable clones. It does not even create a bootable backup. If that's what you prefer then do not use Time Machine.
If you use Time Machine then you must allocate at least twice as much space for the backups than the capacity of the drive you are backing up. A 2 TB backup drive would be suitable for a 1 TB main drive or smaller.
If you plan to create a bootable backup, then partition the backup drive with one partition the size required for the clone. Then use the other partition for you additional storage neeeds.

  • External Hard Drive says there is not enough space even though it is empty!

    Hi,
I have just backed up all my data with Chronosync. I then selected all and put it in my trash, so my external hard drive would have enough space for a backup. But when I try to use Time Machine it says that the external hard drive still has all the data even when I put it in the trash. I do not want to empty the trash before I backup using Time Machine, just in case something happens. How do I get my external hard drive to show it is empty to Time Machine, so I can use it?
    Thanks
    Tim

moving stuff to trash doesn't remove it from a drive. It puts it in a hidden .Trash folder on that drive. you have to empty trash to reclaim space. even easier would be to reformat the drive if you have a lot of stuff to erase.

  • New external hard disc Verbatim 500GB does not start up the Time Machine

    Hello,
I have just purchased an external hard drive (500 GB Verbatim USB 2.0 portable) to back up my computer. The Time Machine did not start up as it usually does when I plug in an external disc and istead a window popped up saying that "unexpected error occured. Error - 43". Does anyone know what the problem is and how to get rid of it? I need to be back up my computer ..
    Thank you.

that's the problem. time machine cannot back up to FAT32 formatted HD's.
use *disk utility* to reformat the drive for Mac (partitioned using GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)).

  • External Hard Drive containing data will not store new back ups in iMac

We have a Toshiba  USB 3.0 & 2.0, 750 GB/Go External Hard Drive to store our Time Machine backups.
It contains only the Time Machine backups
Computer is an iMac6,1 with OS  Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
We have been using for almost a year without problems.  Now it will not back up.  Message states that "files can't be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read only".
We are able to click  the T.M. backup icon on desktop and see past backups, but just cannot backup anything more.
That would make me think the data contained is corrupted but that the hard drive is working?
Tried several recommendations from a number of apple forums, etc: turning the external drive off, and removing the USB cable, restarting mac. Also went thru several cycles in Disk Utility of trying to verify and repair the disk. The last time I tried, there were several messages, including 'DU can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files" , as well as "you may need to repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can't be repaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open T.M. preferences to select a different backup disk."
We have already spent many hours reading and working on this without success.
Please see attachment: The Volume Scheme is set up as 'Current' (no partitions) if that is helpful
What is the best plan of attack? Is it best to erase the existing backups and start from scratch? There is an Erase tab on the Disk Utility with several options but I don't know what to select.  Thank you very much for your advice!

Upon further investigation, I've discovered a problem in the settings under the " Info"  drop down.
The privileges have changed from set up!
I have looked in both the administrator and another user account.   "Read & Write" privileges had been set for both of these account holders, but on Sept 1, "everyone" was added with only the "Read only" privilege in both accounts.
How could this happen?  I have unlocked the padlock and used the admin. password so that I should be able to get ride of the 'everyone' setting, but the whole section has the greyed out look and is not letting me make a change??
