External hard drive not seen in disk utility but can be seen in system profiler

HI
i have a 500gb western digital my passport, its been working fine, since i have used it on a windows machine, i can no longer get it to be recognised in finder. The light is flashing on the side and i can see it under USB in sytem profiler. I cant see it in disk utility. i cant format as it has photos etc loaded
cheers

An update for anyone who can help me:
I have tried the external hard drive in other computers (mac and windows), each time I get the same problem above.
I have removed the HD from the enclosure and purchased a docking station for it (3.5" SATA). When I plug it in to the laptop it disconnects itself straight away before it is visible. With the windows computers it installs the drivers and says that the device is ready to use, then disconnects before it shows up.
As the HD is not visible there is no option to re-format or anything.
This is very frustrating as I was using the HD with no issues and it randomly disconnected and I have not been able to access since.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • External hard drive not visible in disk utility or finder

    Hi all,
I have had a good look through previous discussions and I can't seem to find an issue relevant to mine.
My external hard drive has 2 partitions (1 time machine back up, 1 general hard drive). The issue is that the HD is running when it is plugged in however it is not visible in either disk utility or finder.
I am running OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) on a 2010 MacBook Pro. I also have parallels desktop running windows 7. When I boot windows and plug in the HD I usually get the option to mount the HD to either OS X or Windows. With this issue the option window appears for a split second (not enough time to select either) and then disappears. It seems that the HD may be ejecting itself as soon as it is registered by the computer. I have tried using a different power cable for the HD and also a different usb cable, this doesn't help.
The external HD is a Samsung D3 Station, which i have had for 6 months now and never had an issue with.
    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks,
    Bruce

  • Iomega external hard drive not appearing in Disk Utility

I have a MacBook Pro (from 2011) and I'm running OS X 10.9.5. I have an old Iomega external hard drive. I'm not certain but this thing might be about 3-4 years old? When I connect the drive to my MBP, it shows up in Finder under Devices. But what appears is the Windows disk utility that is pre-loaded on the drive. The actual drive does not appear and I can't move files onto it in Finder.
When I go into Disk Utility and try to format the drive for Mac use, it doesn't appear.
Is there anything I can do or am I stuck with this old drive that doesn't work with Macs?

  • External hard drives not showing in disk utility

When I connect a new Eagle/Consus W-Series external hard drive enclosure to my 15" PB, the hard drive doesn't show-up in the left hand pane of the Disk Utility window. The only thing that shows is the drive in the PB. The hard drive in the enclosure is a WD SATA and is connected via USB cable. The same thing happens, or doesn't happen, when I'm connected via ethernet to my G5 2.3GHz Dual Core: when I open Disk Utility on the PB, the drive on the G5 doesn't show. What I'm trying to attempt is to mirror/clone Tiger from my PB onto the new, to me, G5 using SuperDuper.

Hi, Bob. I obviously didn't understand the situation properly, and now that I realize that, I'm afraid I still don't.
When the G5 is connected, via ethernet to my PB, the hard drive does not show-up in the PB's disk utility pane.
The G5 doesn't have a hard drive in it now, is that correct? So why connect it via Ethernet to the Powerbook?
If you're trying to clone the Powerbook's hard drive onto the G5's drive inside the external enclosure, all that needs to be connected is the external enclosure to the Powerbook, via USB cable. The G5 itself isn't involved in that process at all. When the G5's drive is in the enclosure and connected to the Powerbook, does it appear in Disk Utility on the Powerbook? If not, see my previous suggestions, with the exception of my comment about it not working with either computer.
If the SATA hard drive doesn't appear on the Powerbook's desktop or in Disk Utility when it is in the G5 and the computers are properly networked via Ethernet, recheck your sharing settings: the G5's drive must be shared to be visible to the Powerbook. In that mode, you may not be able to clone the Powerbook's drive to the other one, because the drive in the G5 is being used to run the G5. But if the G5's drive is partitioned, you should be able to clone the Powerbook's drive, via Ethernet, to a partition other than the one which contains the OS that's running the G5.
While the hard drive is in the external enclosure, I can hear it spinning, and am assuming that all the connections are working properly.
If the drive spins, you can be sure it's getting power, and that's good. But you can't safely conclude from that that any or all of the data connections are working properly; in fact the evidence suggests the contrary.
In short, there may be not one but two problems at work here: incorrect sharing settings when the two computers are networked, and a bad cable, connection, or enclosure when the drive is connected to the Powerbook via USB.
EDIT: Let me also add that if the only Tiger installer discs you have are the ones that came with the Powerbook, then having copies of that Tiger installation on both of your computers would be a violation of the software license that accompanied those discs, which entitles you to have Tiger installed on only one computer at a time. If that's the case, you should really buy a retail Tiger installer disc to use on the G5.

  • Hard Drive not showing in Disk Utility (but showing fine on PC)

I have been using an 1TB USB powered Hard Drive with my MBP for a year or so.
I got a new 2 TB drive and loaded it and installed the seagate dashboard software.
At that point, it appears something may have happened to my HP and it no longer appears on my Mac or in Disk Utility.  It appears to be getting power, and it shows up fine on a Windows PC.
    Any thoughts??
This one is really baffling me?
    Thanks

    One other note
A folder called TheVoumeSettingsFolder now appears on the HP, in case that is causing the issue.
    Thanks

  • External Hard Drive won't load, Disk Utility and System Profiler crashes,

I've had the WD 1TB Passport for Mac for about a year now and as of this afternoon, my MacBook Pro stopped recognizing it. It's encrypted so when I plugged it in, my computer asked me for my password, but then it said there was an error and wouldn't mount. After restarting the computer, the password prompt for my external drive didn't even pop up. I can hear the hard drive spinning and the light flashes for a good 30 seconds before going solid. I have tested my USB ports with flash drives and they are reading them just fine. I tried to run  Disk Utility but it goes into the never-ending loading mode. So then I go to the "About my Mac" page and clicked on storage, and the profiler crashed (never-ending loading). Can anyone help me? It was working just fine up until today. I even tried different Micro USB chords on it. This drive is incredibly important to me and I would appreciate not having to erase anything from it (kinda defeats the purpose of backing up a computer if the external hard drive is the one needing the backup).

  • Hard drive not found in Disk Utility

Hello there. I wonder if anyone would be so kind to assist.
Bought a second hand Macbook. Had 80gb and worked fine on Leopard. Bought a new 320gb SATA, replacing the 80gb.
I have a Leopard upgrade disc and a Tiger full install 2-disc set. I insert Tiger and the Macbook advises that I am unable to install this software on to this hard drive. As the hard drive wasnt MAC formatted I guess I need to that first> I enter Disk Utility but cannot see my new HD (only the DVD drive where Tiger is at).
    Any ideas?

Drive is SATA II. No jumper settings as I had already checked.
Have eventually got round this very tedious problem. 320gb was not recognisable at all as you well know. Attached it to a caddy and used a Macbook Pro to see it. Couldn't find it. I attached it to a Windows machine and it got recognised. Re-attached it to the Macbook Pro (which now recognised it) and I formatted the 320gb into GUID format. The original 80gb which still worked had Leopard on it. I put that back into the Macbook and attached the 320gb externally via a USB caddy. Inserted Leopard DVD disc followed instructions and I let it restart. On restart it asks me the location of where to install and I chose the partition I created on the 320gb. Leopard was installed externally.
Reattached the 320gb back onto my Macbook and it worked. 6hrs of frustration but I got there in the end.
If anyone needs to remove the L-shaped panel from the battery bay from a Macbook I can do it free of charge. I can do that job blindfolded!

  • Hard crash now hard drive not recognized in disk utility.

During a virus scan the Macbook froze up now the computer does not seem to be accessing the hard drive. Tried to reinstall Leopard but the internal hard drive is not recognized (same is true when we tried to use Disk Utility). It will not start in safe mode either. Does this sound like a fried hard drive or maybe a corrupted drive that might be repairable with DiskWarrior? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If the A/V you were using was Norton/Symantec, the drive may be OK. Norton is a virus.
Burn a Ununtu CD and see if you can boot into it and look at the drive before giving up on it.

  • External hard drive is present in Airport Utility but not on PC

I've hooked up a Passport 500GB external hard drive via USB hub.  Airport Utility recognizes the hard drive; however, it is not present anywhere on my PC so that I can save file to it?

Vista does not offer FAT32 as an option within the device manager - only ExFAT.  I've tried reformatting via 'cmd' but the system gives me a 'higher level needed' response.

  • Hard drive not appearing in disk utility

My hard drive on my MacBook crashed and I purchased a new one.
I attempted to install the Mac OSX on the new hard drive, but have run into a couple issues.
First issue I ran into was that I found out I had the wrong Install DVDs. I was able to format the hard drive with these disks so I got to step one successfully anyway.
I then did find the correct Install DVDs, but now the Hard Drive doesn't show up in Disk Utility.
Any ideas how I can locate the hard drive?
(Sorry, but I can't obtain the info about the MacBook through the Installer (greyed out). It was purchased around 2007 or 2008. The Install DVDs have 2007 on them.)

  • My simpletech external hard drive shows up in disk utility on one macbook pro but not my other one.  how do i fix this???

I have two macbook pro computers.  My external HD was reformatted on one of them from a PC to MAC.  It shows up just fine on this macbook.  The other macbook, I cannot find it.  Ive tried in disk utility and Ive tried to see if it was hidden.  Cannot access it.  What can I do to make it show up?

Mac's with OS X 10.6.4 or earlier can't read exFAT, so if it was formatted with that (or OS X Extended J) ) and the other Mac is running 10.6.4 or earlier or is even older, it can't read the exFAT format or HFS+ format, perhaps only HFS.
You'll have to settlle for FAT32 (MSDOS) with a MBR Partiton map to be fully compatible with all computers, but you can't have over 4GB sized files with FAT32.
You can try OS X Extended, no journaled, just for the Mac's, but MBR with FAT32(MSDOS) would be preferred. PC and Mac of all types.
Before you change anything, remove all the data off the drive first.

  • Airport extreme hosted hard drive not recognized by Disk Utility

Hi, all.  I've had success for a month now hosting a 4T hardrive wirelessly via my Airport Extreme.  I use it for Time Machine backups and remote storage.  So I'd like to repartition that hardrive via Disk Utlity, however Disk Utility no longer recognizes the 4T hardrive hosted via my Airport Extreme.  How can I get my Airport Extreme external drive to show up in Disk Utility so I can format it again?

I'm not sure you're aware but I wanted to let you know that using an external drive connected to the Airport USB port as a Time Machine backup device isn't supported/recommended by Apple. don't be surprised if you think it's working and you go to use it to restore from a crash, and you can't.  Just a warning.

  • External hard drive not appearing in Airport Utility

I have connected an Iomega eGo portable hard drive to my airport extreme but i cannot access it from my airport utility or airport disk utility.
In fact it doesn't appear at all, even though the disk seems to be powered up and working.
Do i need a separate power supply for the disk or is it a compatibility issue?

not to worry, played around with the cables and it's sorted

  • Hard drive not showing in Disk Utility?

Recently, I went to install Windows 10 via Bootcamp and set up two partitions (one for OS X, 500gb and one for Windows, 500gb). I accidentally installed Windows onto of the OS X partition and somehow the Windows OS disappeared so I currently have no OS to boot in to. I can run Yosemite off of a USB, but when I go to Internet Recovery or Disk Utility, it only shows this.
      Disk Description : Media
      Total Capacity : 0 Bytes
      Connection Bus : SATA
      Write Status : Read/Write
      Connection Type : Internal
      S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
      Partition Map Scheme : Unformatted
I know the hard drive can't be dead because this is a brand new laptop and it was working just fine before. How can I get the drive fixed?
Instead of buying DiskWarrior since it's $110, can I just buy a new 1TB HDD and put it into the computer? Can I hook up my laptop via Firewire to my iMac and reformat the drive or something?

Or try and boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys.  The display should show a revolving globe.  By following the instructions, this will connect the MBP to the Apple servers and allow you to erase the HDD and reinstall the ORIGINAL OSX.
    Ciao.
The problem with this option is that the computer does not recognize that there is any space on the hard drive itself. The hard drive is just labeled as "Media" and has 0 bytes available. I tried using GUID partitions but Disk Utility says the drive is too small.
