External hard-drive only for Intel-based macs?
I have an iMac G5 powerpc (without the camera). Today I bought a Western Digital: My Passport- Essential 250GB external portable hard-drive. I will be using this to back-up my iMac's hard-drive. Before I opened the packaging, I decided to see if Apple.com sold this product in their online store. They do, but one of the 'one-star' reviews posted on this product stated that "it will only work with Intel-based macs." I can't seem to find any more information about whether or not this statement is correct. I was hoping somebody could help me out and let me know the answer. If it doesn't work with the powerpc imacs, do you know of a brand or model that does? I plan on leaving it in the packaging until I know for sure just in case I need to return it to the store. You can order them online from [macsales.com] and have them sent to your college. You can look in Staples or go online and see if they carry LaCie - the OWC ones are only sold on macsales, as far as I know.

Best external hard drive format for use with mac and windows?
This is more of an apple operating system combined with windows operating system question, but being that my OS will upgrade an fluctuate there is not option to choose in the operating system section.
Anyways to the question(s)
This whole prbolem came about when my computer started having issues, I want to back it up and whether I can continue to use my laptop or not I will still be owning an apple in the future. I went to buy a hard for back up and got told that it is not as easy as one would think to transfer files from mac OS to windows OS and vice versa. I have a mac, my boyfriend has a windows computer; we share files. Mostly I just copy his files, but once in a while I give him files too. I have read up and talked to people and only found one solution so far to format the external drive to fat 32 or exfat. I think only mac has the exfat option, but works well between both OSs, correct me if I am wrong.
What is the difference between fat 32 and exfat?

If I do not want to use fat32 or exfat is there a format type that works great for mac saving that I can still at least save files to that were originally on a windows computer? Such as I copy his files from his external drive to my computer and then save them to my external drive.
Is there a better format for file sharing between mac and windows that does not set a 4GB limit?
And a silly question, Can you dual format a hard drive?
Note: This format is for an external hard drive.I still do not know which format would be the best. That is so that I can use it easily between mac OSX and windows. Is FAT32 the only true option? How limited is it? I heard it is limited to 4GB file size for windows and 32 GB for Mac. Are there other sources I have not found with more concrete information on the limitations of this format?
I really do still need this information and I need to back up my drive before I can take the computer in for service. -
External Hard Drive only for Time Machine?
I just bought a 500GB external HD and just ordered Leopard. I'm wanting to use the hard drive for my iTunes library rather than keep it on the internal HD due to the size.
My question is, if I then use it for Time Machine, will it be only for TM or can I do both?
And if I can do both, will it erase what is currently on there while setting it up for TM?Apple doesnt recommend it, but it shouldnt be any problem. Time Machine creates a backup directory in which it keeps all the backup info. As long as there's space you can use the drive for other items. I have an internal 500GB drive I use for backup, and I keep some large files on it. The problem will be sooner or later the drive will just fill up with backup info, and time machine at that point will dynamically erase the oldest backups but will not have space for storing other files. Basically dont rely on the drive to have space for storing extra stuff. Partitioning the thing will prevent this, but it will make your backup drive smaller.

Using IMOVIE '08 to import from DV camera to 'BUSLINK' external hard drive( formatted for MAC ) but no success and kept getting this message: The import was canceled. You may not have permission to write to /Volumes/BUSLINK/iMovie Events.localized. Thanx in advance!
I finally got a representative that was able to help me, she had me go to Get Info, by right clicking iMovie from the finder, and I had to click on Sharing & Permissions>Everyone>Read & Write

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

It's starting to irritate me that I still can't copy folders of more than 4GB to my external hard drives. I've checked some websites that told me that the external hard drive should be setup as "Mac OS Journaled", but when I check this via Disk Utility, I find out that they are. What is another solution for this problem, cause it takes a lot of time to select folders within folders within folders to copy to the external hard drive, instead of just copy and paste the main folder...

BobOkay so today I've erased one of my external hard drives, and reformatted it as "Mac OS Journaled". If I copy a huge folder on it from my MacBook to the external HD, there's nothing wrong and it goes fine.
But then when I try to replace the folder with a more up-to-date version on my MacBook, the Error Code 0 shows up again.
So: reformatting didn't work out. Putting huge folders on it goes fine, but replace them with a newer version of the huge folder, doesn't work.
Any solutions? Please?

Trying to copy ANY file from my MacBook Pro to an external hard drive spins for 45 minutes then fails. I hate this computer and WISH I never would have wasted my money. Any ideas? WD My Passport 2TB Drive, had to buy a program to make the POS read files. Copies that would take seconds from a Windows based machine never complete. I have to close the transfer or shut off the machine half the time. Worst computer I have EVER owned, crashes non-stop, constantly freezes, and seems like EVERY operation is more complicated with this thing. Literally, my 1997 Compaq was FAR MORE reliable and user friendly.
This is one of the messages I keep getting; The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in -- File Whatever -- can’t be read or written.(Error code -36)

Do not store them in the Cloud. It isn't really storage. For iTunes purchases, for example, it is just re-downloading a purchase. If a label decides to no longer make the item available it will disap[pear from the cloud and that will be it for you.
You can't store items on an external drive simply by dragging them there. That's too complicated for iTunes and how it is set up to work. I know I post on this 10x a week and there's many other posts discussing this. I suggest you browse a bit first. Your options are basically to either put your whole library on the eternal drive (which is a nuisance if you don't want to drag it everywhere with you), or to copy individual items to the external drive, delete them from the internal drive, then re-add them as new items (re-adding to playlists, etc.). -

Is this something that has happened from the start? If so, I would reformat the disk and setup TM from scratch again.
Prepare the external HD by connecting to the Mac, open Disk Utility, select the manufacturer’s name of the external HD, select Partition and choose GUID Partition Table, format to Apple OS Extended (Journaled); quit Disk Utility.
Open System Preferences.
Click on Time Machine.
Click on “Select Disk.”
Click just to the left of "On" to turn TM on if it's not already on.
Click on the disk or partition you want to use.
Click on “Use for backup.”
Leave external HD connected, and TM will automatically do its thing. -

How big of a drive do you want? Western Digital USB MyPassport drives work great and are inexpensive. You can buy them Mac formatted or just buy one that isn't and use Disk Utilities to format it for a Mac. As far as I know any of the external drives will work with OS X Lion.
I use a 500GB MyPassport. My MacBook Pro mid-2010 has a 320GB drive and i'm using less than 60GB so the 500GB external is plenty for my back up needs. I use it with Time Machine and SuperDuper! (for bootable images) in Lion. -
I need the Adobe Flash Player version 11.1.102.64plug in on my MacAir to view Ustream videos. Adobe message says the version is for Intel-based Macs with Safari; also says that I "may have to temporarily disable antivirus software. is it safe to download?
Your MacBook Air is an Intel-based system. To download the current version (11.2.202.228), go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and download it from there.
If there is still a Flash issue, you can try the Google Chrome browser, which has the current Flash built into it, to see if it works any differently with the videos. It's available from https://www.google.com/chrome -
Me compre un ipod classic de 160gb cada vez que trato de ponerle musica de mi disco duro externo solo copia hasta 1500 canciones y luego me congela el Itune y no lo puedo cerrar, me pide que restaure el ipod como de fabrica, lo hago y nada. Trato de cerrar el programa de itune y no me deja, trato de apagar el computador y no lo puedo apagar, he buscado para ver si tiene errores el disco del Ipod y me dice que esta bien. Lo he restaurado como 8 veces y le he puesto musica y videos pero siempre me borra todo. He aplastado Menu y Seleccion para entrar al sistemade diagnostic o del ipod y le pongo el test manual donde entro al IO y me dice q todo esta bien. Le he dado ya varios Format directamente desde el Windows 7 y nada tampoco, siempre me borra todo desde que pasan mas de 1300 canciones y me congeal todo el equipo.
