External Hard Drive "partial" crash?
Ive been using a 500 gb GDrive mini triple for about 6 months now to store all of my data for school and it has been great, until now. I dont kow exactly what happened, but now "most" of my files are corrupt (the important ones conveniently). I had partitioned the drive into two separate drives. One containing all of my iTunes data, and one containing all of my other data. The iTunes partition seems to be untouched and still works fine. The other partition ("school") had everything organized into about 4 file categories: School, Non-School, Baby(my wife's stuff), Portfolio, and one or two loose documents. All the data was stored in FAT32 format. After using my hard drive on a PC at school yesterday, all of the files on the "School" partition have gone "bad", with the exception of the "Baby" folder. That one and all of its contents are in perfect condition. I should mention that I use bootcamp and my windows partition at home regularly in conjunction with this hard drive as well, with no previous issues. Does anyone have any idea what could have happened here? Ive never heard of anything like this before, and its vitally important for me to be able to recover the data stored on that drive. Finals are in two weeks and everything is on there! any help is greatly appreciated.
This is how they appear in OSX Unfortunately there are many applications used to create different files. Most are .jpg or .psd images created in Photoshop, but there are also Word documents (.Mac), .pdf files, .wire files created in Autodesk Alias Studio, .avi videos, and maybe a couple of MP3s. I tried to run verify disk in disk utility but got the following error: "Disk Utility stopped verifying "SCHOOL" because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed." I then ran repair disk with the following result:

It looked like something happened but when I open the volume in finder the files look the same and cannot be opened.
Im going to attempt an error check from the windows partition, hopefully I will have better luck over there.
Quick question, if I try to perform a repair on this external disk from disk utility on Mac or a similar process in Windows, will it affect my data? (i.e. erase any data that isnt recovered?) Ive been searching for an answer to this question but I dont know how to ask i guess because my searches yield the answeres to the wrong questions. thanks again.

External Hard Drive Partially Recognized
I looked around the forum, but have not found an answer...
I've an external hard drive, which I've been using for a while with no problem until today. The HD was partitioned into 2 sections. Today, when I turned it on, my mac only recognized one of the partitions. I ran the disc utility to try to verify & repair the partition, but I got the following error:
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
Since part of the HD is recognizable, I guess I can assume that it is not totally fried. How can I fix this??I think it may be OK then, just check the S.M.A.R.T. status in System Profiler>Hardware>Serial ATA.
After you recover or backup all your info...
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the Erase tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Highlight the drive, select Erase Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install. -
External hard drives and MacBook
Sorry, I don't know if this is posted in the right section.
I have a MacBook connected with an external hard drive. I'm not sure what it takes for an external hard drive to crash, but I unplug it until I need to pull something from it or backup files. Stupid question, but is it more likely for an external hard drive to crash if it's constantly plugged in or it doesn't matter?A hard drive is not more likely to crash if it is constantly plugged in; it will have a head crash if the mechanism is accidentally dropped, and it may have a head crash if it is at an altitude where the air pressure isn't enough to keep the head from colliding with the platter. This is not a concern below 10000 feet, and isn't a concern if it is used on a pressurized aircraft.
There is a negligible chance that a problem on your computer will cause information on the drive to be lost; this can only happen if you need to shut down or restart the computer improperly, and it is unlikely to happen even then. Before unplugging the drive from your computer, control-click it in the Finder and choose Eject from the menu which appears, or from the File menu.

I had all of my music on an external hard drive that crashed. I have iTunes Match so all of my music was synced in the cloud. How do I now re-load my music back down onto a new external hard drive?

If a song is available in iCloud, it has a Download button next to it.
To play the song, double-click it.

After you download a song to a computer, it remains in the computer’s iTunes library, even if you turn off iTunes Match.
To only display downloaded songs in your iTunes library, choose View > Hide Music in the Cloud. This also hides any previous iTunes Store purchases you haven’t downloaded.

I had backed up my I-tunes files to an external hard drive but after my computer crashed and I restored it when I try to reload from the hard drive the message comes up ""I-tunes files cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of I-tunes". Help Please

My hard drive on my computer crashed! This is the computer my ipad was sync with! All my photos of my three girls are on the ipad, but how do I get them transferred to either an external hard drive or to another computer - or just have them all printed - nearly 1000 photos!
Also, can I back up my ipad with an external hard drive? If I try to sync to a new computer it will erase everything I currently have on the ipad , correct?

The title came from an earlier step in the process when I was posing a question to the systen.
The pertinent part of the question is "How to I back up documents that are stored in iCloud"
That the destination for the backup is NOT my internal HDD should be clear from the rest of the post.
And frankly, even if that is where I want to back up to, that would at least give me two copies, at least giving me one duplicate of the stuff on iCloud.
So please stop wasting my time if you can't answer the actual question: How do I backup content that is stored in iCloud. The destination of the backup is irrelevant.

my hard drive crashed on my MacBook Pro crashed and I need to get my CS5 up and running on the new hard drive. I copied what I could onto an external hard drive but when I drag and drop I get directions to uninstall but the uninstall folder I have does says it is an alias that is no longer present. I get error 6. I would like to get my software up and running on the laptop again please
If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc. you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod. I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard. -

I have an external hard drive:
2 TB Seagate Backup+Desk Media
Partitioned:
1TB - Windows NTFS
1TB - Mac (sorry I can't remember the formatting, whatever Mavricks asked me to use...)
What happened:
I was erasing 3 old backups from the Apple partition and my laptop crashed part way through emptying the trash. (it has done this many times before, where parts of the screen are frozen in square blocks displaced all over the screen. Screenshot not possible unless I use a separate camera).
When I force restarted my computer (holding down the power button) neither side of the drive was accessible. After running the Disk Utility and Verifying and Repairing the Disk Permissions and the Disk Itself (for the Windows side) I was able to access the Windows partition. However, upon attempting to do so with the Mac partition it tells me that it cannot be repaired. I have found many forums discussing SIMILAR situations but none with the same and here is why:
Up until this happening I could access ONLY the Windows partition when the drive was connected to either my Apple laptop in Bootcamp Windows 7 or my HP laptop in Vista, while my MacBook could access both sides of the drive. HOWEVER, after this crash, BOTH my Windows 7 and Vista can access both sides of the drive (so My files are still all there and accessible) but my MacBook Pro swears that the Apple partition is doomed.
Since the Apple side of my laptop is my primary workhorse I really want to figure out how to fix my drive.
So Questions:
1. Anything else I can provide to the experts out there to help me get this fixed?
2. Can I custom fix this via accessing the drive on either of the Windows systems?
3. Why would it suddenly show up in Windows when it became unaccessible to Mac?

After I made this post and was checking emails, walking away from computer, and then came back my Mac partition of the External Drive has shown up on the Desktop...
So, in the ever immortal way of asking the tech to come check the issue and the issue resolving itself, perhaps I should posted on the forum sooner...
NOTE: The disk still shows up as unusable in the Disk Utility and it appears that the files are read only (cannot make a new folder on this side of the external drive)
I still consider this a volatile issue because I do not want to lose the files on this half of the partition and I have not gotten a replacement drive yet (too much data to move to my computer and then format the current drive) -
External Hard Drive crashed with all songs on it. HELP!!!
Hello. My kids have used my work PC as their itunes playground for over the past year. I added a Lacie external hard drive to help them save thier music and had itunes on it, as well as my pc. The external hard drive crashed and won't communicate with the pc at all so when we bring up itunes on the pc it shows exclamation marks next to almost all of the songs and won't play them. I still have almost all of our music on my ipod, except about 170 songs that they purchased since I last plugged in my ipod, they have their own mini's. I want to know how to get the songs back to my computer. I am afraid if I connect the 60GB ipod to the pc all of our songs will be wiped out since my ipod is on autosync. Can anyone give me a reliable way to get everything back to normal? PLEASE!!!!
Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac. If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. External Hard Drive won't load, Disk Utility and System Profiler crashes,
I've had the WD 1TB Passport for Mac for about a year now and as of this afternoon, my MacBook Pro stopped recognizing it. It's encrypted so when I plugged it in, my computer asked me for my password, but then it said there was an error and wouldn't mount. After restarting the computer, the password prompt for my external drive didn't even pop up. I can hear the hard drive spinning and the light flashes for a good 30 seconds before going solid. I have tested my USB ports with flash drives and they are reading them just fine. I tried to run Disk Utility but it goes into the never-ending loading mode. So then I go to the "About my Mac" page and clicked on storage, and the profiler crashed (never-ending loading). Can anyone help me? It was working just fine up until today. I even tried different Micro USB chords on it. This drive is incredibly important to me and I would appreciate not having to erase anything from it (kinda defeats the purpose of backing up a computer if the external hard drive is the one needing the backup).

If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it.
