External Hard Drive Permission

I've been using an external HD for my iTunes Library for about 2yrs now and last week I accidently pressed the "Eject" icon for my HD instead of a thumb drive eject button.  A few days later I rebooted my system and now iTunes says "you don't have the privilage to make changes" when I try to import new CD's.

Its just a random HD which could be connected to any Mac and used as an external HD on any Mac.
Then copying from a user folder/account from which you have permissions to should work. The only other thing I can add is one of my previous suggestions which you have not responded to, to Repair Permissions on the "new" HD. If this doesn't help, I'd recommend posting in the TM forums, where someone may have more knowledge about this than I do.

  • External Hard Drive Permission Error

I've been using a SimpleTech 160 GB external Hard drive for my mac computer for just over a year now. Never had a problem till one day I got on my mac to see the hard drive ejected. So I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it showed up. But since then every time i need to use that hard drive as a destination such as unzipping files, converting movie files and having the output destination as the hard drive, also time machine was unable to back up to it. I started realizing that everytime the output destination would read different then the actual external hard drive. example my hard drive is titled "MegaHD". And normally it would show as desktop/megahd/folder/folder ect. But now it shows, desktop/megahd 1/folder/folder. It adds a 1, some kind of ghost partion or drive. I can't get anything to work.
    What I've done is...
    1) Try repairing the drive, but says the drive cant be repaired cause it's not mounted.
    2) Move everything off and then erase and reformat the drive, then move everything back on.
(Since doing step 2 Time Machine now seems to read it, and when I unzipped files it would say MegaHD 1, but it would still unzip them there. But still get errors from some other programs.)
    3) I contacted the SimpleTech support and they told me to repair the drive. Then when I told them I did already and it accomplished nothing. They told me it was a operating system problem and to contact apple support. Which is why I'm here.
So here I am hoping to resolve this annoying issue. Any help or ideas?

Use the Go to Folder command in the Finder's Go menu to navigate to /Volumes/, drag all of the folders inside to the desktop, unmount it, and then mount it again. This is not a problem with the drive itself nor a permissions issue.

  • I do not have permission to write in my external Hard Drive

    Hello everybody.
I have recently bought a MacBook Pro (15, 2.16 Ghz with OS X 10.4.9) and I have a Beyond Micro 300Gb external Hard drive that I have been using with my PC. This drive has a Windows NT File System.
When I first plugged it to the Mac, I changed its name to recognize it better. Now, I am not able to transfer documents from my Mac to it, but I am able to do so through the PC.
    Am I done something wrong?
Am I blocked this drive? (Once open, I see a pen crossed on the lower left corner)
And if so, Could I unblocked it to make it writable?
When I try to transfer any documents with the Mac I get a message saying that I can't do it and because I do not have permission. (I am the administrator).
I read a previous posting talking about a similar problem, but I really couldn't understand the solutions and/or differences beteween NTFS, FAT 32, MS-DOS and MacFuse (I am a complete novice).
I also tried (as suggested in the posting) to use the Disk Utility to set the permissions from there, but when I select the external Hard Drive all the options are dimmed. Also, the info panel says I only have permissions to write, having no other available alternatives to choose from.
The question is: How can I make this drive available to both Operating Systmes without erasing all the information inside (format)?
    Thank You in advance.

    Thank You rvdparis
I have just intalled MacFuse (with Tools and Core) and it does allow me now to read and write in my external Hard Drive.
Once again, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
And yes guys, this seems to work. Forget about formatting your external hard drive. MacFuse changes the permission instantly.

  • I don't have permission to access certain folders in my external hard drive?

Every year at my college, we get our laptops re-imaged and completely wiped of all their data for new programs, etc. Prior doing this, I backed up all my files onto a WD external hard drive. This is not the first time I've gotten my macbook wiped or used the hard drive, so I am not sure why I'm experiencing problems this time around. In the hard drive I am able to access the Applications folder, but all the rest of the folders such as Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, etc. which is located in the Users folder under my previous user acc, have a tiny no entry symbol on the bottom right corner. When I click on the folder it tells me "The folder "blahbalh" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."
The only security the drive has on it is an initial prompt for a password that I enter once the hard drive is plugged into my mac. There are no problems there. So why don't I have permission to view certain folders?
Any help would be appreciated. I have all my work on there. Thanks.

First make sure you have read & write access to the folder you're trying to restore to. You should be able to see its contents in the Finder, and to move files in and out of it.
This is an exception to the rule that you should never make any changes to backup data. I've tested this procedure in OS X 10.8 only. It should work with later versions, but I don't know whether it works in earlier versions. Use this procedure  only for files that were backed up from your home folder, or a folder on another volume created by you, and would normally be writable by you. Do not touch backups of system or application files.
In the Finder (not in the time-travel view), navigate to the backup volume, then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb", and then to the snapshot you want to restore from. The snapshots are folders labeled with the date when they were created. Inside each of those folders is a file hierarchy like the one on the volume that was backed up. Descend through the hierarchy until you come to a folder named "Users," and inside that, a folder with your user name. The procedure will be different if you're trying to restore files on another volume.
Select the folder and open the Info dialog (command-I). Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and authenticate. In the Sharing & Permissions section, give your account Read & Write access. You may have to close the dialog and repeat this step in order for the change to show up. Then click the gear icon and select Apply to Enclosed Items from the popup menu.
Try the restore operation again, in the time-travel interface.

  • Seagate External hard drive ask for permission from admin when moving files in and to the drive, but I am the admin?

Today I plugged in my seagate 1TB hard drive and every time I want to move my files to the hard drive or in the hard drive itself, I have to give my admin password. The pop up box says: Finder ask for permission, click on Identity control. I never had this before.. This happened today. The settings are set to System - Read and Write, Users - Read and Write and Everyone - Read
This is very confusing. I can still copy and move files but I have to give my password every single time.
    Thank you so much!

Thanks a lot! I have already downloaded Paragon Driver and it works well with seagate external hard drive. I am copying as of now my important files from my mac to it. However, I have only the trial version which will expire in 10 days. I don't have credit card to buy for it.

I recently purchased an external hard drive to back up my iMovies. When I try to open the movies on the backup I get a message "you may not have permission to modify that folder" How do I change permissions on the backup?

    Hi
One Must NEVER move or alter any folders named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Projects - or - alike
on DESKTOP/FINDER - Ever ! - ONLY Within the iMovie Program ! else all connections are broken and hard to impossibly to mend !
but rather do as described here under
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project

  • External Hard Drive "You don't have permission" intermittent issue

    Hi -
We have three iMacs that are networked using Airport Extreme.  Computer 'A' has an external USB hard drive plugged in to it.  I have "file sharing" turned on, and using "get info", I have shared the external hard drive with Computer 'B' and Computer 'C'.  Most of the time, opening or saving files to the shared hard drive works without any problems, but occasionally (perhaps twice a day) any of the three computers will display an error message that says "You don't have permission" to save, or open or do anything with a file.  It can happen on any of the three computers at any time with any file.
In the "Sharing and Permissions" portion of a "get info" window for the shared hard drive, it correctly says "dougshaffer (Me)" and "everyone" have "Read & Write" privileges.  To fix the problem, I have to unlock the drive, click the gear wheel and choose 'Apple to enclosed items...".  This solves the problem temporarily but it will certainly happen again later.
Also, every time I have to go through this process, I have to re-check the "Ignore ownership on this volume" check box.  It will not stay checked even with the lock ON.
I have searched for this issue but can't seem to find a solution.  FYI, this has happened with two different hard drives.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks -
    Doug

I see that a few people have viewed this question, but there are no responses yet.
    Any thoughts, anyone?

  • How do I encrypt my external hard drive and subsequently a specific file within it, using my Mac? I tried creating a disk image but permission was denied.

Encrypting an external hard drive and specific folders within. Permission denied using disk image.

    VKP90 wrote:
When I tried to encrypt a single file within the hard drive itself, I got the following: Disk Utility Progress: Unable to create "Name of my file" (Permission Denied).
When I tried encrypting the entire hard disk itself, I got: A GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required.
I have also currently used Time Machine on the external hard drive, along with saving other data. Hence, I am not sure if partitioning is going to delete any of this (a video I watched mentioned that using the + button when creating partitions retains current data). Backing up the external hard drive is out of the option since it is the back up to my Mac.
You can't encrypt a single file. I'm not sure what you did to try. You can make an encrypted disk image which begins with a folder, if desired. Or, you can just create a blank, encrypted disk image, then move your desired files into that.
While you could partition off the free space without erasing the disk, you cannot encrypt it because you need a GUID Partition table which requires you to repartition the entire drive, not just the free space.

  • Permission issue with external hard drive

    Hi,
I have an external hard drive that has a bunch of video and audio files on it. Any time I try to open any file from the drive, regardless of file type, the application it's supposed to open it says it can open. Most of the people I have talked to have said that it's a permission issue and have not had a solution for this. Looking for any suggestions on how to repair these permissions. Disk utility has been no help and when running recovery software like Data Rescue the files come out in the end with the same issues.
    Thanks.

Drive was shot and could not rescue the information

  • Haw to change permission on a external hard drive?

    HI,
I can't use my external hard drive cause after the upgrade to lion when I try to do it the mac says that I haven't permission to open it...
EHD: verbatim gigabit NAS external hard drive
    thx

That's if you want to have permission on the drive at all.
If you want the drive to be accessible by everyone then do the following:
    Highlight the disk
    Command-i to get info
Click the disclosure triangle next to "Sharing & Permissions" if it's not already pointing down
Check the box "Ignore ownership on this volume"
If it's grayed out you'll have to click the little orange padlock and supply your admin credentials.

  • How do i change read/write permission on an external hard drive?

how do i change read/write permissions for an external hard drive?

If, on the otherhand, you are trying to write to a drive that is formatted NTFS (for Windows), and can't.
    You have two choices...
    1. Reformat the drive. Either Mac OS format, if you are using this only on your Mac. Or ExFAT, or FAT 32 if you intend to use it on both a Mac OS computer and a Windows unit. note: ExFAT is not suported by XP.
    2. Install one of the drivers necessary for the Mac to write to a NTFS volume. Unless you want the experience of having the support for this being one that is sporadic, avoid this. I used to be a strong proponent of NTFS-3G, until I started having the problems with Lion, that many users warned us about. Go this route only if you find you must use NTFS on your drive. Paragon and Tuxtera are the sources for these.
