External hard drive renamed, now lightroom does not see my files

I have been putting all my pictures in a folder on my external hard drive and then pulling them into Lightroom as they are added. The external HD  was named (J:). I just went on vacation and decided to take a laptop and my hard drive along to work on photos. WHen I returned and plugged my hard drive back in to my regular desktop  it showed up as (L:). I tried to simply rename it, but that did not work. Lightroom does see any of my folders as they were all mapped to the (J:)  drive.
Any ideas?

Right click on the top level folder in Lightroom folder panel and choose Finder Missing Folder or Update Folder Location. The first usually only shows in your situation, but on occasions it might note, therefore the second should be enough. This linked tutorial should guide you through the remaining steps.

  • Swapped hard drives, but now Aperture does not recognize library file

I just swapped out my MBP hard drive for a larger one. I used SuperDuper to restore the small HD to the new, larger one from a third Firewire disk.
Everything else is working fine, except that Aperture says that "The selected master image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again." every time I try to do anything meaningful with any file in my library.
    I have:
-Repaired permissions on the new HD with Disk Utility
-Tried several times moving the library file around to various places, telling Aperture where to find it each time, and restarting Aperture. Aperture finds the images okay, but I can't really do anything with them, as I get the above error message.
-Renamed my new HD, going through the Aperture Prefs, and re-specifying where the library lives, and then repeating the process with the HD named yet again.
Nothing seems to work for me. What else can I try?

    1. Are you using referenced or managed Masters?
    2. If using referenced Masters, have you tried reconnecting them via File>Manage Referenced Files...? What happens if you right-click on a thumbnails and pick 'Show in Finder'?
    3. If using managed Masters, have you done a Spotlight search inside the Library package (right-click on it in the Finder and choose 'Show Package Contents') to see if the master files are still in there?
Moving the Library and/or renaming drives isn't going to help without finding out exactly where Aperture thinks the files should be.

  • Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive

Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive. I already know that you can partition the internal hard drive to do the very same. Idon't want to use any of the internal space to run windows so I'm asking if it is possible to use a flash drive or external drive through USB to run windows when it is plugged in.

Read https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5043762?start=0&tstart=0 to discover you can't do it.

  • I moved my itunes library to an external hard drive and now I can not update my phone and my apps aren't showing in the sidebar of my library. How can I fix this?

I moved my whole library onto an external hard drive but now when I plug my phone in, it can't back up, it can't update and my apps stopped showing up on the side. It still charges and syncs but I can't update the software. I use a PC. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Ok. progress...
So is your media folder called iTunes Music or iTunes Media? And does it have a folder called Music inside it?
Before going any further you should first attempt to use File > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder "<Media Folder>" (ignore if grayed out). This will make sure that any iPod Games or Mobile Applications get placed inside the iTunes Media folder which is needed for portability.
If your iTunes Media folder is called iTunes Music, close iTunes, rename the folder as iTunes Media and start iTunes again. iTunes will automatically adjust. Close iTunes again.
On your external drive rearrange the folders that you have already copied there so that they match the layout in your active library. You should end up with a folder called X:\iTunes where X: is the external drive letter, and the media folder is X:\iTunes\iTunes Media. If the library layout was upgraded then you will need to create a Music folder inside this and move all the artist folders and Compilations into Music. You will also need to copy iPod Games and Mobile Applications from your internal drive into the new media folder. Next copy the files iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folder Album Artwork from the internal drive into X:\iTunes. The preceding manipulations should make the internal and external copies of your library match without you having to copy all of the media over again.
Now hold shift as you start iTunes. Click choose, browse to and open X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.
Finally use File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate files. This will ensure that any stray files that might have been added from outside your original media folder will be copied into the new one.
You can now reclaim the space used by your library on the internal drive, however before you do so I would advise you to obtain another external drive and make use of this backup tip.

  • I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos, documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want to move those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again to another external hard drive 1T. My question is:

I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos, documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want tomove those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again toanother external hard drive 1T. My question is: Is it possible? Doing this willnot affect the files that I had in windows? No information is lost? or how cani do it?

Connect the external drive to your Mac and drag the files from it to your Mac's internal drive. Then dismount and disconnect the external drive, connect the 1TB external drive, and drag the files from the internal drive onto the external. Nothing will have been deleted from any of the drives up to this point; the files will only have been copied. Verify that the files are readable. There's no reason they shouldn't be; this is just a precaution.
Now if you wish to delete the files from any of the drives, drag them to the Trash, and Empty the Trash while the drive from which they came is still connected. If you disconnect the drive before emptying the Trash, the files you were trying to remove from it won't be deleted. They'll remain in the Trash and continue to take up space on the drive.
Note that if your external drives are in NTFS format, you won't be able to write anything to them or delete anything from them, though you will be able to read and copy the files they contain. The NTFS disk format is read-only to the Mac OS, unless you have a third-party NTFS driver installed. To make your drives cross-platform readable and writable, you must reformat them in the FAT32 or ExFAT format.

  • External Hard Drive connected to AEBS does not auto mount

Just upgraded from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5.5. I have a AEBS running 5.3.2 airport utility with a LaCie HD connected to it.
In Tiger, my external hard drive would auto mount onto the desktop every time the computer turned on or woke up from sleeping etc.
In Leopard, my external drive will not auto mount. It does not show up in the sidebar under devices. It does not show up in the disk utility. To access it, I have to go the the finder sidebar, select my AEBS under shared, then select my HD. Also, I did check show connected servers and external disk on the desktop in the finder preferences. Also, not sure if this matters but the icon on my external drive on my desktop is the blue drive with three people holding hands and not the brighter blue one with the wireless signal logo.
In tiger my external HD basically acted like any other folder that was always there and not like a networked drive that I had to go and connect to. I want to go back to that. I heard this has to do with leopord no longer having the airdisk utility??
    thanks

Try making an alias of one of the top-level folders in your external (AEBS-connected) drive, drag it to the desktop, and then put it in your Login Items.
    --> System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items
You can simply drag the folder alias into the Login Items window.
When you next log in, the folder will be automatically opened. Alas, it doesn't give you instant access to the entire external drive, but you can back out a level to see the entire drive. It isn't quite what you had with Tiger, but perhaps it will suffice.
If you leave the aliased folder on your desktop, you have a skinny approximation to the mounted volume that you had with Tiger.

  • My external hard drive and cd burner does not appear on the desktop of my mini.  Using Firewire adapter from old to new firewire ports.

I have a new Mac Mini (2013) and older external hard drive (Lacie) and cd reader/burner (EzQuest).  Both have the original Firewire ports and the Mini has the new kind.  I bought a cable with both kinds of ends but I plug them in and they don't show on the desktop.

From what I've heard, sometimes certain devices will not have full functionality if they are FireWire 400 with an 800 adapter. Take Apple's original iSight external webcam. It had FireWire 400, and people report using a converter cable will give them video, but not audio.
When I first got my mini, my usb cd burner wasn't recognised by Finder or Disk Utility. After repairing disk permissions and a reboot, it worked fine.

  • Windows 7 Prof. decryption on an external hard drive (WD My Passport) DOES NOT WORK

I cannot decrypt files and subfolders of a top folder on a WD My Passport hard drive using the "advanced attributes" of folder "properties". (The "advanced attributes" of folder "properties" works
    on the internal hard drive.)
I can decrypt a file individually on the WD My Passport hard drive using "advanced attributes" of folder "properties". However when I try to use "apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files" option, the
decryption DOES NOT WORK on files and subfolders. (The system does not generate any error message just runs through the items and leaves files and subfolders in an encrypted state.)
Is there another way to decrypt files and subfolders of a top folder?

I am having this same issue... it seems all my files have been encrypted and I am the original owner of them! Have you found a solution to this problem?

  • I installed a new bigger hard drive and now spotlight does not work with outlook to search for emails

My old hard drive was full so I went to an apple authorized provider to install a new bigger hard drive. They also moved the data and applications from my old drive to the new one. They did not use time capsule because their way was faster. After the installation I did have to reenter the product code key for Office 2011 for the Mac. However, now I find that I cannot do email spotlight searches in Outlook. When I put in the search - it comes up with no results. This is true no matter what the search. Any ideas of how to point spotlight to look in the email folders so I can do searches again. This is a feature I use daily - so I am concerned that I have lost this feature. Also, I am noticing that alot of the settings did not carry over to the new hard drive. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would recommend starting over and migrate using your Time Capsule backup however DO NOT do it wirelessly, connect using an Ethernet Connection. If you upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard then follow the instructions in this video, the kid is annoying but he knows what he's doing. Clean Install Of Snow Leopard video. Once you have installed and updated Snow Leopard then update using the 10.6.8 Update Combo, then log into the Mac App Store and re-install Lion and all it's updates. My guess this is an afternoons work.

  • EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE NO LONGER RECOGNIZED, DOES NOT MOUNT

Hello everyone, this is not necessarily a mac mini issue
last night was working on my mac mini (intel 2007), it froze up, couldnt even restart, so i held the power button (hard reset i guess)
it came back on but then would NOT recognize my external HD, (which is an iomega mini max 1TB)
perhaps this was considered by my mac as "not ejecting or putting the disc away properly "
i did a ton of research (here and elsewhere)..found various hints/fixes but nothing works so far
i tried using different cables, firewire, usb..ran hardware test...zapped the pram....tried it on my ibook (which also does not recognize it)...turned the hd off and on...
i unplugged everything, power to mac, all cables.. left overnight...tried again with no luck
    restarted, powered down...nothing
tried finding the the external hd partitions in "/Volumes" to trash. there was ONE of the partitions there, which i trashed - no luck (i had 3 partitions on the external hd)
was going to swap the hd to another enclosure, but the mini max hd wont fit it/work
    disk utility doesnt see it
i tried a few things with terminal - nothing
i am unable to open firmware (via commandoption+OF, as this is an intel)
it doesnt seem to be a problem with the firewire port, as that port recognized my video camera
im pretty sure the HD and my data is fine, its just that my mac doesnt recognize it. its like its already "on" or "mounted"
it cant find the path or map or something like that
in system profiler it comes up as:
    "Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown Device
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec"
any ideas? why would force shutting down (by holding the power button) cause my mac to no longer recognize the external HD?
i have NOT tried "discwarrior" or norton. trying to avoid having to pay $100 and i read that others with this problem bought discwarrior, which didnt see it or help
i did try something called "total recall" by virtualab - it did NOT see the external HD
and as i mentioned above, disk utility does not recognize it
ok please let me know, i could really use some help here
i do usually backup to dvd's but not everything..also did a ton of work recently that was NOT backed up
hope to hear from you soon!!!
    thanks in advance, andrew

hello, i dont have a UPS but have it connected to a power strip
    what might this mean?
btw - when this first happened (3 days ago) i used disk utility/first aid to examine my mini, it PASSED
yesterday i thought what the heck, ill run first aid again
and this is what i got:
    verifying volume "mac mini"
    checking HFS plus volume
    checking extents overflow file
    checking catalog file
incorrect block count for file AbletonTmp-0001
(it should be 1 instead of 0)
    1%)
    checking multi-linked files
    checking catalog hierarchy
    checking extended attributes file
    checking volume bitmap
    checking volume bitmap
    or repair",0)
    checking volume information
    volume header needs minor repair
the volume mac mini needs to be repaired
error: the underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume needs repair
it wasnt able to fix it while booting/running off the mini so
i then ran disk utility on the OSX install disc and was able to fix that problem
but alas, no luck with the external HD, still not recognized
the AbletonTmp-0001 makes sense because that was one of the programs i was running when it crashed
i was hopeful that fixing that problem would help.
ive been through quite a few crashes and restarts like that, i wonder why this time it caused such a serious problem
i would imagine there are a ton of people who have to force a restart or dont eject the HD, or unplug it, etc
i wonder why there isnt an easier/better way for a mac to deal with an external hd/flash etc. are pc's as sensitive with ex hd's?
ive had to tell new mac owners again and again -"no! you have to eject it first!"
ok well thanks in advance for any further advice/help
it means a lot to me, so thank you!!

I move folders from my internal hard drive twice to an external hard drive.  Now I believe Lr does not know how to find my photos.  What can I do to get this cleared up.

Jim has a very good suggestion. There are many factors at work here:
    1) How are you connecting the external drive to the computer?
    2) How big are files (329 x 1MB is not the same as 329 x 25MB)?
    3) What is your computer specification?
    4) Do you have any power saving settings on (in particular something that would send the computer/hard drives to sleep)?

  • I recently transferred my itunes library to an external hard drive. Now I get the error message 'the original file could not be found. Could you like to locate it' when i try to open songs. My iPod syncs ok.

I recently tranferred my iTunes library to an external hard drive. Now I cannot open songs and get the error message ' The song "***" could not not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it'. This applies to all 9742 songs!!. My iPod still syncs ok, but I can't play songs on the PC. Can anyone please help.

It would help to have more background about your iTunes collection such as if you keep it on an external drive, or if you have moved or renamed anything recently.  iTunes is very sensitive to you renaming or moving files or folders involved with your media.  iTunes only keeps a reference to where a media file is located  and then goes to look for it when you try to play it. If you have changed things since it was added to itunes then it's like me sending you to look for a friend in my addressbook but that friend has moved.
The other possibility is your computer is starting to lose files.  Again, the computer uses a reference database to tell it where on the drive to look for a file. If that database gets corrupt then it starts losing files.  Use Dsk Utility's first aid to verify your hard drive.

  • I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
*1. Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
*2. Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
*3. A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
*4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
*5. A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

hello everyone. I have recently installed a Samsung SSD (solid state hard drive) into my destop PC. For some reason Lightroom does not see it ? So i cannot ingest photos from it, or copy photos from a card to it. It is not listed as a drive option. LR sees every other drive. My computer sees it fine, so i was able to create a catalogue there. Im running windows 8.1. Any ideas ? I will also add that this drive became corrupt and was repaired by Samsung. Maybe they didn't do a very good job.. ..

Yes pretty much that, but to clarify sorry
    Opened Lightroom.
    Create new catalogue.
This opened the Windows 8 file explorer window and Windows recognises the drive. So I was able to create a catalogue there and save.
I then inserted my memory card into my card reader which LR recognised. I selected it, chose all the photos within and then navigated to the right side of the Lr import dialogue window to locate this problem drive as on this occasion i want the RAW files on the same drive as the lrcat. However all my other drives are listed but not this Samsung SSD.
In addition this Samsung SSD is not listed a drive to import from in the same dialogue window.
