External hard drive(s) won't boot

Okay, I am at my wits end here.  I hope someone may be able to help.
An earlier discussion on this board concluded that the hard drive on my PPC iMac (flower pot) is a goner, so I purchased an OWC Mercury elite AL-Pro 250 GB external drive.  I partitioned the drive and set it to the Apple Partition Map as per the instructions, then installed the Leopard OS from the black retail disk to the external drive.  After several failed attempts, the OS successfully installed on the drive. The drive showed up on my desktop and when I clicked on the drive it had folders for applications, system etc that make me think it was installed.
BUT when I tried to boot from the external drive, I just got a gray screen.  I tried the startup manager and the external drive didn't even show up.  I wiped the drive and started over with the same results.  So I hooked the drive up to my iBook G4 that runs on PPC, erased the drive, reinstalled the OS and selected the external drive as the startup disk and got the gray screen.  So I repeated again and got the same results again.  When I tried startup manager on my laptop, I only saw the Mac HD and the drive didn't show up as a possible startup disk, even though it is hooked up and available on my desktop.
So I called OWC tech support.  We agreed that the OS was installing but the external drive wasn't booting.  The tech guy concluded the drive must be faulty and sent me a replacement.
I eagerly formatted the SECOND hard drive and installed the OS from the install disk on my iMac.  First install attempt failed and said the drive must be damaged.  I run the repair disk utility and it found a few issues but said they were repaired. So I tried again and the install failed with the same message. So I moved everything over to my laptop and over the course of an hour or so got the OS installed.  I then selected the drive as the startup disk (in system preferences), restarted and . . . gray screen.  Startup manager shows. . . . no external drive.  The drive is available on my desktop but just won't boot.
What am I doing wrong????  I am so frustrated and confused.  Please, any help or thoughts?
PS -- interestingly, in the process of installing on the first drive, the internal hard drive on my iMac reappeared from wherever it had vanished to and I erased and partitioned it for the heck of it and the #!&*&% kernel panics that started this whole mess reappeared.  Now every single time I start the computer booting from the prodigal internal hard drive I get a kernel panic about 5 seconds after the space scene appears.  Agghhh.

BUT when I tried to boot from the external drive, I just got a gray screen.  I tried the startup manager and the external drive didn't even show up.
You need to use a firewire connection on all PPCs.
This may be the problem.
My OWC Mercury drive is a little finicky about booting.  It needs to be powered down before it will boot. The sequence that works for me.
1) You need to power off everything.
2) poweron external drive.
3) Wait til external drive stablizes ( 10 seconds??? )
4) Holding down the option key then power on iMac. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your external hd. Click on right arrow key.
( once you get it to work, powering off the external drive is probably enough. )  The drive only seems to be bootable right after a poweron. Once you get it to work, you can put all on a power strip.  Configure Mac OS X to boot from external drive. Flip powerstrip switch & I thnk all is well.

  • External Hard Drive, System won't boot

I recently purchased a Western Digital 750 gb hard drive. I reformatted it to Mac Journaled and it is connected through firewire 400. It works great and all, but I've noticed that it has significantly slowed my system startup time when I press the power button (recently, it won't start at all). After I unplug the firewire cord and press the power button, it starts normally. I'd rather not have to unplug my hard drive every time I turn my computer off.
    Please Help.

ok... i don't recall reading what kind of enclosure it wasin???
I don't think you are going to get away from the problem of unplugging and plugging back in... I have to do the same thing with TWO of my drives - one is firewire and one is USB2.0...
no one has been able to provide a solution for me and I know for a fact my drives are fine and the cables are new (and i have tried using others). i switch between my mac and pc's with the drive all the time and there has never been an issue with the drive... just the same problem you are seeing, have to unplug and plug back in.

  • External Hard Drive Enclosure won't mount

    Hi
I have a Western Digital Caviar WD3200JD 1TB SATA hard drive inside an external startech enclosure
    http://www.startech.com/item-download/SAT3510U2B-35in-USB-to-SATA-External-Hard- Drive-Enclosure-with-One-Button-Backup.aspx
It won't mount on my mac, it won't recognise it in disk utility either
I mounts fine on a PC running Vista. I have formatted it as NTFS but it will still not shoe on my mac
    Anything else I can try?
    Thanks!

my 12 inch powerbook laptop body was no good, but the hard drive was. I had a powermac g4 tower with a bad harddrive. After researching, I found this site and I mounted the laptop harddrive into the desktop and boom! my old laptop drive booted up on the desktop powermac. here is the link. a 3 yr old can install this it is way too easy, plus it cost 99 Cents. way cheaper than buying an enclosure.

  • How do I setup an external hard drive to mount at boot (without any login action) in Mavericks?

    First the Details:
MacBook Pro, Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.5
    USB 3.0 External Hard drive
I am currently using an external drive for my user storage.  Right now I log in with a separate User account to mount the drive, log off, and then log in with my user.  I am trying to remove the extra steps so I can boot my Mac and log right in.  I have not found any method that pertains specifically to Mavericks, and all of the methods I have tried for older OS versions do not seem to work properly.
    Thank you for your help.

How is the EHD formatted? It is USB powered?   If it's formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored and connected to a USB port it should mount as soon as the MBP is booted up and the EHD is spun up. It should be accessible to all accounts on the Mac.
Do you have additional software that came with the drive that you've installed? What make and model drive is it?

  • HELP. External hard drive suddenly won't show up on Mac.

So, I left for a few minutes and when I got back, there was that warning on my screen that said the disc wasn't ejected properly, etc. Which was weird because the drive was still plugged in fine. Anyway, when this happens, I usually just pull the hard drive out then plug it back in and it works fine but now it won't show up on the desktop or on the disk utility I got it to show up on disk utility once, but the subheading under the hard drive was greyed out. I could click it but when I tried to run Verify or Repair, nothing would happen. It would show up on the history as "repaired disc" but NOTHING. And I am honestly freaking out Please help, anyone

I'd have to agree with WZZZ. That sounds like either a bad connection, bad cable, or faulty supply. The port could be bad as well but the cable either being bad or not properly plugged in or maybe even worn out. When the "disk ejected" message shows up it's usually because somehow the cable was yanked out of the system while it was plugged in. Intermittenet connections in the cable, particularly in supply lines between the drive and the unit can cause this to happen as well...it's as if you unplugged the external hard drive from the system for a very short time, but the system still picks it up and sees it as bad.

  • Will a Thunderbolt external hard drive be able to boot the Thunderbolt MBP?

Are there Thunderbolt external hard drives available and will they be able to boot the Thunderbolt MBP?
    Thanks.

MMMM Why would you want to boot from a slow external drive instead of the on board SSD (Retina MBP) is the question.
My Tbolt externals WDs 8TB Duos only give roughly 1/4 (25% performance) compared to internal SSD, Externals are normally for backup operations and too slow for the amount of read/writes required for a BIg OS such as OS10.8, Max write speeds are determined by the donor disk, even when in 2x2 stripe in Raid 0 only clock about 500GB per hour ( any one getting over this please send screen shots for verifiaction and number of disks used in the array), bursts in smaller file are quicker.
Power PC if I remember correctly is not x86 compliant and running Snow leopard on a MBP retina is like running MS 3.11 on a gamers platform.
Various forums say that OS 10.8 WILL NOT boot from Tbolt running any Raid (0 1 5 6 or 10)
There is a backward and forward compatbitly issue with which way you are firing the data, put simply a tbolt drive with Firewire to Tbolt adapter cable is only as quick as the firewire and may not justify the cost. Also 2 machines = 2 boot partions to accomodate the different hardware inside each case.
You may be better of installing Paralells (Apple Store $100 including USB 3.0 Cable which is backward compat with USB 2.0) and running VM (Virtual Machines) using OS 10.8 on the Retina and using the older machines as displays. It boots windows linux ubuntu and more into VM without rebooting the machine and works seamlessly in the named OS's
    Hope this helps

  • Transferred library to external hard drive, iPod won't recognize

    2 problems:
    1. My Shuffle won't accept songs from iTunes now that's in on my external hard drive.
    2. When I hook up my regular iPod, it says something to the effect of "a new library has been detected, do I want to import?" Do I?

  • External Hard Drive folders won't refresh or retain changes...

I customize folders in my external hard drives but now the external hard drive window that pops up when I plug it in, doesn't refresh at all and nor does the hard drive retain any changes made, usually you can see the icons flicker when you refresh a folder
but this doesn't happen at all, it's like it's stuck, it's still operational for the most part but I can't customize folder icons when it's like this.
What could possibly be causing this?

    Hi,
"I have tried plugging the hard drive into different computers but the same problem occurs so then I thought it was the hard drive itself but the same problem occurs on all 12 of my hard drives"
Were these 12 drives external drive or internal drive?
Please create a new folder that don't customize the icon or anything for test.
If it work fine, we could suspect the culprit is the customization.

  • External hard drive movies won't play on apple tv

I recently purchased an Apple TV unit.  Plugged it into the sony TV HDMI input.  It sensed the existing wifi I wanted to use.  Set up home sharing.  Etc.
I recently started copying some old digital video tapes via my iMac to an external hard drive.  After reading a few blogs, I imported into iTunes what I thought were the digital home movies from my external hard drive.  I then went back to my living room and chose "computers" and then "movies" and low and behold they were there with the correct running times etc.  When I chose the home movie I wanted to watch it won't play.  Is there some setting that I am over looking?
Sort of weird that I can see the movie selection with a picture (basically the first frame of the video) but can't play it.
Any suggestions would be very helpful.  I've tried to figure it out myself, but not knowledgeable about how this mac works I suppose.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • External Hard Drive (160GB) won't mount?!

    Hi focus,
I am new in MAC OS and I had some difficult to MOUNT my External HARD Drive in MAC OS TIGER 10.4.10 (all updated).
My MAC simply does not recognized my external HD, but recognize when I am using a Virtual machine (Fusion VMware) and running Windows XP. I already try to format in differents formats, FAT/FAT32/NTFS/EXT2 but nether recognize them.
So I ask, there is some "restriction" to mount external IDE drives? I try to use disk utility or ipartition or SupperDuper and no one recognize automaticly.
My original HD was partioned in 2 parts (by me) one for the system 38 GBs and other one 79 GBs for my musics and documents.
If someone has any ideias why this is happen, please help me to solve this problem. Because I need to backup all my data (no actually bootable stuffs) in this external.
    Thanks,

    Thanks A Brody,
But how can I format my External HD if my MAC can not recognize, even in disk util or ipartition. I think the partition Magic (for windows) can do that, but can not.
So I think, now, the Mediafour MacDrive can do that, is that real? I am Downloading one version from web and I will try in a second. For me is not a problem format in mac format and read in windows within this software, but the problem is recgnize to format in macformat.
I run windows in virtual machine and now I already Install this Macdrive, but does not work, I can not format my external drive with this software. Well I read more and more discussing foruns and also saw you tube videos about formating in mac and it is not a big deal, its should be easy, first of all if mount my external drive to just starting talking about that stuff.
I will get some other "interface" more modern and try to recognize, if do so, maybe I bougth other USB interface. But for now It is to hard stuff has an external 160GB harddrive to backup stuffs.
Thanks and if some one has other suggestion it is always welcome!

  • How do you transfer movies from macbook to a external hard drive it won't recognise

how do i transfer movies from macbook to a external hard drive? it just wont recognize

So your MacBook Pro is a 2012 model (I'm assuming since you only bought it a week ago!)?
There are some known issues with the USB 3.0 ports on the 2012 models where they do not recognize USB external drives. This tech note may be of some help - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#12.
Some people that are using pre-release versions of Mountain Lion, to be released in the next couple of weeks, have written here that their USB 3.0 port problems are 'fixed' with the new version of OS X 10.8.
Try the Apple FAQ first and if that doesn't solve your problem, you may have to wait a couple of weeks to see if 10.8 does.
    Sorry,

  • My external hard drive suddenly won't mount.

I have a mac 0sx version 10.5.8.  My WD hard drive suddenly won't mount.  Tried running a repair with disc utility-no luck.

  • External hard drive icon won't appear on desktop

Apparently spontaneously (has worked fine in the past!) I cannot get a desktop icon for my La Cie external hard drive to appear. I can see the hard drive in Desktop Utility and can eject it through there but the verify and repair options aren't highlighted.

I hear it spinning- I think?
That may not be so good because it suggests the power is getting to it and it is something else more critical to the functioning of the drive that is wrong. If it is the enclosure you could try moving it out of the enclosure into a different one, or into the computer.
I just used Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory- no luck.
Ah, so did Diskwarrior see the drive? I didn't think you could see the drive in Disk Utility.
I also replaced the firewire Cable- no luck.
Good try but the flashing blue light suggested something else to me.
I'm now doing to bring it to a local Computer Store to try to retrieve the information.
Try using an application such as [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive.
I wrote to Lacie- but they are so slow in responding- it will be days.
    Ummmm....

  • External hard drive, now won't work after a slight knock

Hi folks.. This is my external hard drive:
USB external hard drive 2.5" 1TB Cherry Red Platinum.
I ever so slightly knocked it the other week & since then now, it spins up then ticks, then
stops, but since a bit of messing it now does not tick & spins up fine, but seems not to be recognized.
Any more info if needed not a problem.

My desktop is an Acer Aspire AX 3400 w/Windows 7 Home Premium.
    Thanks for any advice.

    All caps... !!!! Don't please.
Did you change the connecting interface(cable). If so then replace it once again with matching voltage levels.
If you know a little about hardware, open it and check if the tape is damaged or not. If tape is damaged, there is nothing you can do, you have to take it to the manufacturer.
About the ticking sound; when is it coming. While reading or while connecting. If it is coming while reading then there might be some shunt getting on. Try to open it and connect it directly to your motherboard. Use a SATA cable or IDE.
Connect before starting your machine and check if the BIOS is recognizing it or not. You can get this information in the BIOS advanced settings. (Assuming you know that if not please Google it.)
If still that sound is coming then its beyond you. Should take it to the servicing store.

  • Using external hard drive as both a boot drive and time machine backup

My internal 1TB hard drive on my iMac is dead and I don't have the money to replace it at the moment.
I have everything backed up on an external 1TB drive using Time Machine. As a workaround for the time being,
Is there any way I can install the system on the external drive and use that as the boot drive without erasing the Time Machine
Backups?  It seems to me I would have to have two partitions for the external drive, one for the system, and
one for Time Machine. But is there any way to add a partition without erasing the existing one with
    Time Machine only on it?
Sorry if line breaks here are weird. Doing this from iPhone.

Neil , I have a mid 2010 27" imac running 10.6.8 and i want to install Lion , when i purchase Lion from app store will it give me any install options as I would like to be able to dual boot using SL and Lion , I have 500 gigs left on my 1 tb drive (should I do this) or would I be better of using an external bootable drive as I also want to  use Ubuntu and or Linux down the line.
Any and all support , help and advice will be appreciated.
