External hard drive software stopped working

I have a 300 GB Seagate external FW hard drive attached to my G4 Power Mac. It is partitioned for back ups and storage, and back ups are scheduled for every night. It was working fine until a few months ago, when I started getting an error message for the automatic back ups. This started happening at the same time that I was struggling to install PS Elements, which I finally did, thanks to your help! I had repaired permissions several times during that installation process, but the problem with Elements turned out to be a glitch in their software, not a problem with my computer. Anyway, ever since then my back up software (Bounce Back Express) hasn't worked. The external hard drive itself seems to be fine as far as the storage aspect, but I'm concerned about the back up. I tried repairing permissions again and re-installing the software, but that didn't help. Can I just use another backup program, or is there something in OSX that I can set up for my back ups? I know there are other back up programs available, like SuperDuper and Carbon Copy, but don't know which to choose. And how concerned should I be about this happening, since I'm not having trouble with any other software, but it happened rather suddenly?
Thanks!

okay. the "My Music" folder has special registry properties in Windows, so the problems have probably been caused by the registry losing track of where it is.
The best place to start with that one is with the following document:
iTunes for Windows: "Disk is locked" or "iTunes folder cannot be found" when installing or opening iTunes
… but if you run into the complication where “My Music” doesn’t appear as an option in TweakUI, perhaps try the alternate procedure from the following Nigel Carpenter post:

  • My external hard drive has stopped working on my MacBook Pro

    Hi guys,
So my hard drive, which was working earlier today, no longer registers when I plug it into my Mac. It flashes once and then stops, and it does not appear anywhere on my laptop. It still works in other laptops so I know it is not dead and other USB drives etc still register on my laptop.
I have read through the other discussions but nothing quite fits my situation. If anyone has any sort of information or advice that may help, I would very much appreciate it! Thank you.

Basically my external hard drive would not eject so i force quit it and the hard drive does not come up at all anywhere on my mac pro OS X version 10.9.4 and it isn't visible in disk utilities no and it doesn't say format either and i have tried it on a windows computer it does not show on their either. the format is Fatdos i think so i can use it on windows and mac and i cant see anything in system reports and yes it is connect by a USB. also it isn't making any noises either

  • My Western Digital external hard drive suddenly stopped showing up on my Macbook Pro and disappeared from Disk Utility. It works on a PC.

My Western Digital external hard drive suddenly stopped showing up on my macbook pro and it disappeared from disk utility. I have tried making invisible files visible but nothing has worked and my hard drive shows up on a PC but not my Mac anymore.

What is the manufacturer of the external and how old is it? Does it have its own AC power supply or is it USB bus powered?

  • How do i get itunes to display my library (which is on an external hard drive)?  It worked OK on old PC, but not new my new laptop.   They are M4A files. are

My itunes library used to be on a PC - but shortly before the PC went to PC heaven I transferred the library onto an external hard drive.  It worked fine.   Now I have a laptop - but I can't get itunes to pick up the library location.   I have changed in advance preferences, but the library does not display.  I have tried holding down shift when starting itunes - but when I do that it looks for *.itl files, and all my files are M4A files.  What do I do next?

You mean you transferred the media, not the library...
Now I have a laptop - but I can't get itunes to pick up the library location
The library location is in your /Music/ oflder.
Your media files (not yet in your new iTunes library ) is on the external drive.
I have changed in advance preferences, but the library does not display.
Because you have not yet added anything to your library.
    Quit iTunes.
On the external, create a new folder named My iTunes library (or something).
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select My iTunes library on the external.
Go into Windows Explorer and move all the media files on the external into /My iTunes Llibrary/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.

  • External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.

External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.
I have the latest Airpor Time capsule 2gb. I specifically bought it so that I could have an external hardrive set up to wirelessly house my itunes library and movies. When i connect the drive, all i get is that the disk needs to be repaired.
the drive can works fine when connected to the macbook pro and I have run the verify and repair features in disk utility. I have also reset the airport timecapsule as well following these changes and still no change.
The 7.7.2 update says that it addressed the usb issue of not showing the drives but there are still problems as I cannot get it to appear.
    Please help.
    Thanks

How is the hard drive formatted?
Have you tried using a powered USB hub with the drive when it is connected to the Time Capsule?
(The USB port on the Time Capsule is borderline as far as power is concerned....you may need to use a powered hub.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply)
If the drive is formatted correctly....and....it has ample power, it will "show up" when you open AirPort Utility, click Edit, then click the Disks tab at the top of the next window.
In the example below, my Time Capsule drive is named "Backups" and another drive named "WD Drive" is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
You should see the name of your Time Capsule drive (named "Data" unless you have changed the name) and the name of the USB drive if you perform the same check.
    What do you see?

  • Since I upgraded to Mavericks, my Maxtor external hard drive doesn't work. What gives ?

Since I upgraded to Mavericks, my Maxtor external
Hard drive does not work. It is FireWire to
Thunderbolt . When I connect it it crashes. What
    Gives ?j

Maxtor, must be an old one.
There is a disconnect occurrence in some cases with FIREWIRE ext. HD and Mavericks.
(indications mentioned on the Mavericks board)
This is known and being looked into.
Ive looked into this much myself.
Suggest using another Mac and offloading data onto a USB3 and using same until there is resolution.
Any normal USB ext. HD is working fine.
    Peace

  • External hard drive doesn't work on any other machine but my Mac since I connected it to the Mac

My external hard drive used to work on any machine. I watched movies on my tv, putted the movies on the hard drive using my pc. Since I connected it to my new MacBook Air, it doesn't connect to anything else anymore! I hope it's something in settings witch I accedentely clicked on (something with privacy so it can only connect to my Mac or something like that). Does anyone know how this happend/how to fix it?
PS. Maybe its important, I use it for Time Machine as well. Before I used that, it deleted my whole hard drive whitch really ****** me off. Now I got new stuff on it. Maybe my Mac is just claiming it to keep the hard disk for itself?

Just to be clear Mac's can read/write FAT32 but windows cannot use OS X Extended. So to use a drive on both systems it needs to be formatted FAT32
FAT32 does have limitations and possibly the best solution is to use NTFS, a more modern, robust filesystem. The drawback here is that OS X does not natively read NTFS so a third party kernel extension is needed.

  • External Hard Drive doesn't work after Time Machine cancelation

    First post on the forum.
So far i've had 2 hard drives broken because of a simple Time Machine.
I own a MBP and an HP so my hard drives usually have 2 partitions, one for mac, the other for pc. About a month or so i was doing a Time Machine on my Iomega 1TB (the partition used for the time machine is formatted in Mac Os Expanded (with journaling)),  and, because the time machine was extremely slow i stopped it. Then came the problems. I tried to connect the Iomega to the mac, but the partition in which i had the time machine doesn't mount. the other partition is mountable and i even managed to delete some files in it, so it worked. But now the partitions don't mount. I can still see the two partitions in Disk Utility, with the correct names i gave them, but cannot mount.
Right now i don't have the disk with me because i went to a "professional" to try and at least recover my files. What a joke that was. First they told me they had my recovered files and them the files were not mine. The switched the disks and gave me someone elses files. And now they ask me for 1100$ to recover my files because it is a hardware malfunction. Obviously i dont have that amount of money available and i cannot afford the recovery atm, and i do not believe that a software can cause hardware to fail. (just guessing)
Resume: 1 external hard drive, with 2 partitions, one mac os expanded and the other is a Windows NT Filesystem. None of the partitions are corrently mounting on mac but the disk utility recognizes the partitions and the names i gave them.
So guys can u help a poor little girl that needs her photographies so that she can go and show her portfolio to get a job. :/
    Kinda desperate at this point.

  • External hard drive doesn't work on other macs.

So I've got this external hard drive (WD Elements) and basically have only used it for my macbook pro.  Today I tried it with an imac, and it didn't work.  The computer recognized it, but it wouldn't let me move any files onto the hard drive.  There was no error message or anything; it just didn't work and made that ping sound.  You know the one you get when you clicked somewhere you weren't supposed to?  That sound.
I thought maybe it was a formatting thing, because the disk utility verification said it's "formatted for use in Windows 7," but then how is it working on my macbook?
Anyway, I feel like there's a really obvious solution for this, but I can't seem to figure it out, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like your hard drive is formatted NTFS, Mac's can read those type of drives, but unable to write to them without special software.
Take a look at this link, http://www.macbreaker.com/2012/02/enable-write-for-ntfs-hard-drives-on.html

  • External hard drive software

    Greetings,
I just bought an external hard drive, Maxtor 160 gb for my G5 Imac. I haven't done this before but I plan on moving my wife's 7000 photos and my 3000 songs over as backup. Is there a software program anyone can recommend that will automatically move all new files from itunes and iphoto once a week without me having to do anything after setting it up?
    thanks, don

Is the paid version worth buying for a lightweight computer user like me?
    Absolutely!
Without paying the shareware fee, it works, but it will simply backup everything evertime.
Registration allows you to do a "Smart backup", which will replace only changed files, saving a LOT of time.
Also, you can select specific folders whcih you do not want/need to be backed up.
Oh yeah, I used 114 gigabytes on my new hard drive, I have no idea on what.
A lot of stuff is not actually deleted in iDVD and iMovie so you need to make sure you empty the trash in those apps.
I cleared up like 20 GBs of space.

  • My hard drive has stopped working

Last night I woke my computer from it's sleep mode. I was able to view my desktop but everything froze and I was not able to reboot the computer. So I shut it off manually. When I turned my computer back on, it did not take me to my desktop and OSX did not start. I did some investigative work and tested my hardware with the hardware disk I have. It said everything was fine. So the next step I took was to insert the OSX Tiger disk. It then prompted to install the operating system but only gave me my external hard drive as an option.
I have since reinstalled the OS and I can use my computer but my internal hard drive isn't mounting and I cannot access any of the files I had saved on it. Does this mean my hard drive crashed or is there a way to access it that I haven't thought of?

I don't have any personal experience of DiskWarrior, but it does get recommended for that task regularly on these boards. Use the disk as little as possible each write action performs reduces the data you can recover.
What went wrong during the software update?
