External Hard drive will no longer mount

I just got a new macbook pro refurbished, and I connected my external hard drive to it and it worked great the first time. I came back to do that same today and now i cannot get any hard drives to show up on my computer in the desktop, then checked disk utility. My setting are set for them to show up on my desktop as well. I have two drives and neither will show up. But both will show up on my older MacBook Pro. I just cannot understand how it would work one day and then not the next. If it was a system issue I would assume it would have not worked the first day. Help!

Nevermind, I updated the system and works like a charm, so weird.

  • External hard drive will no longer mount or be recognized by any utility FIX!!!

i have been searching al day and running endless useless terminal scripts to no avail. earlier i was in the middle of upgrading my xp bootcamp partition to sp3 and forgot i had my macally external harddrive still connected and running. i noticed that the light on it was blinking and since i was running the windows installer(and we all know anything can happen) i feared the worst and that i had chosen the wrong partition for it to install the sp3 update on. i immediately did a force power down even though it was abig no no,but i have done it in the past with this and a ton ofother external drives and even if they didnt mount at first they eventually would after running oynx, cocktail, disk utilitya and restarting. i finally gave up and had just placed an offer for the exact same drive to be shipped asap since i currently had no time machine or bootcamp backups as well as other important data. i decided to unscrew the 2 screws in the back to free the drive from the enclosure just to see if there was an obvious thing wrong that could be messed with or fixed to make it mount again, even to just have the ability to reformat it again, since that's not possible with ANY of the major utilites out there UNLESS it can be mounted or at least visible to them. NOTE: Do NOT BUY ANY of those expensive utilities,i have them all and they don't do ****! so anyway i looked at the drive didnt see anything and decided to try and boot it while exposed and out of the enclosure. I plugged it in, and BOOM it worked! PERFECTLY. Rasn checks in all utilities including disk warrior and disk utility and all tests passed as normal. SO for anyone having this nightmare problem i had ALL DAY LONG,do exactly what i did. open it up,remove it if possible, plug it in and see if it mounts. i will put it back together when i get a chance. GOOD LUCK!!!

Nevermind, I updated the system and works like a charm, so weird.

  • My WD external hard drive will no longer show up on my Macbook pro.

My WD external hard drive will not longer show up on my macbook pro.  The light turns on and you can hear it running but it won't show up either in finder or in the disk utility.  This happened a while ago but I really want to get all my photos off the hard drive.  Is there anything I can do to get my computer to read it again or get my data off of it?
I don't have access to another Mac to test it.
    Thank you

  • My external hard drive will no longer connect to my macpro......any ideas on how to solve this problem??

My external hard drive will no longer connect to my macbook pro via FW800........Any ideas on how to solve this??

Reset the SMC, see this Apple note: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Also reset the PRAM:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
In most cases, those two actions will fix the port issue. If it's still an issue, you may need to see if the external hard drive can connect to another system, to ensure it's not having problems.

  • Owc mercury elite external hard drive will no longer come up on my desktop

owc mercury elite external hard drive will no longer come up on my desktop?

    Can Disk Utility see it?

  • External hard drive will no longer will mount.....

I have a mac-mini OS 10.5.4 and a Hitachi-SimpleTec 500GB HD. Has been working beautifully and now, the icon for this volume is just (poof)...gone from the desktop and will no longer mount.
Here's the kicker. Went to Disk Utility>First Aid and the HITACHI HD shows up in the list to the left. Y'know, there's that first tier that says "465.8 GB HITACHI HD..." And then, just underneath (of course) there's an indention and the personal name of what I call my drive...(AND THAT IS ACTUALLY GRAYED-OUT)
But anyway, I still proceed to go through the "First Aid" process.....
"Verify Disk" which it says, "The volume (blah, blah)...appears to be OK.
    (NEXT).....
"Repair Disk" (same thing) The volume (blah, blah)...appears to be OK.
But, it absolutely will not mount!
Now, what I have also tried is to "right-click" on my hard drive icon (still right there in the left column of "Disk Utilities"). And it gives me the option to, both..."Mount" or "Eject" the drive. Well, I've tried both! (lol) And I get the following error messages (each time)
Mount = "The Disk (my name, blah, blah)..could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting" (Of course, I've done the First Aid and it all said "OK"
    (SO THEN I TRIED)....
"Eject" which said, "The Disk (my name, blah, blah)..could not be UN-mounted.
Make sure all applications and files are closed on this disk" (what could be "open" on this disk that won't mount in the first place?)
Okay, guys! VERY, OVERLY DESCRIPTIVE I KNOW....BUT, I'm desperate! I WANT to finish my mix I was working on and need my music. My system has been shut-down/restarted...(all that stuff). I hope I haven't left anything out! (lol) I HOPE, EVEN MORE SO that it's something relatively simple as well.
    Many...many THANKS!
    peace.

Yes. Thanks for the response. I followed all the steps you gave a little bit ago. And still, the Drive comes on, the led light flashes once. I can here it kick on. But, the usual icon for it is still not in finder, not on the desktop. But, of course it shows up in disk utility. Again, the first line that says, "465.8 Hitachi HD...." And that second line which says, "deejayWESTBROOK LIBRARY 1" is grayed-out (but I can still click on it....still won't mount...(or eject). But, it still gives info about the drive:
    Name : deejayWESTBROOK LIBRARY 1
    Type : Volume
    Disk Identifier : disk1s1
    Mount Point : Not mounted
File System : Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Connection Bus: USB
    Device Tree : /PCI0@0/USB7@1D,7/@5:1
    Writable : Yes
    Capacity : 465.8 GB (500,107,829,248 Bytes)
    Owners Enabled : No
Can Turn Owners Off : Yes
    Can Be Formatted : Yes
    Bootable : Yes
    Supports Journaling : Yes
    Journaled : No
    Disk Number : 1
    Partition Number : 1
And lastly, both "repair" and "verifiy" say that the drive is "OK"
    Thanks.

  • IPhoto library on external hard drive will no longer open

I'm hoping that someone will be able to point me to a simple solution to my problem...
I'm running iPhoto 9.6 on a  MacBook Pro (Retina, 13 inch, mid-2014).  The OS is Yosemite 10.10.1.  Because the flash storage is only 250GB I have my main iPhoto library (146GB) on a partition of an external 1TB Lacie Rugged drive.  The external hard drive also has partitions for Time Machine Backup and SuperDuper Bootable Clone.  I have a separate, much smaller iPhoto library on the MBP which contains recent photos.
Yesterday I failed to reconnect my MacBook Pro to the power source when I put it back on my desk.  The result was that the battery went below 5% and the MBP turned itself off and also ejected the external hard drive (some time after I reconnected the power cable there were dialog boxes on my screen informing me that each of the three partitions had been ejected incorrectly).  I waited until the MBP was fully charged before I tried to open my 'main' iPhoto library on the external hard drive.  I received a message that the library would have to be upgraded to work with the computer (very odd, because it had already been upgraded last October when I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite and has been working without any real problem ever since then).
After some hours when the only message on the screen was 'Rebuiding Thumbnail Caches' I pressed Cmd+Option+Esc I saw that iPhoto was 'Paused'  - that message subsequently changed to 'Not Responding'.  I 'Force Quit' iPhoto but the iPhoto library will not open at all from the external drive.
As a test I quit iPhoto and re-started using the Option key and chose to open the iPhoto library which is on the internal drive and it opened without any problem.
I recall that it used to be possible to fix this sort of thing (perhaps not) by trashing the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file, however, I don't seem to be able to find it :-(
I'm really at a loss as to how I should approach this problem and I would be very grateful for any suggestions that can be offered.
    Cheers
    Tricia

    Further update ....
I downloaded and installed iPhoto Library Manager and then chose Library - Rebuild Library.  Unfortunately, when it had finished the result was 0 images in any file or folder.  I checked the log (which is incredibly long) but here's the beginning of it which seems to indicate that the problem is that an essential file is missing -

As mentioned in an earlier post I do have another iPhoto Library on my 2008 MacBook.
Can someone advise the best way to proceed?  I'm thinking that I should erase the partition of my external hard drive that is called Pictures and then connect the external hard drive to my 2008 MacBook and simply drag and drop the iPhoto Library to the Pictures partition.  IIRC, that's the way I moved the iPhoto Library last October when I bought my new MacBook Pro which didn't have enough storage for me to be able to store my iPhoto Library on the MBP.  I could then reconnect the external hard drive to my MBP and the iPhoto Library should reappear, shouldn't it?
Looking forward to more input ...

i have a powerbook g4 aluminum. i have an external hard drive for it. a simple tech 100gig portable drive, almost brand new. i dont know what happened to it, but one day i was starting my computer up with it attached. it wounldnt fully start up, said "waiting for local disks" so i uplugged the external hard drive. now it wont mount and will only show up in the disk utility of my friends macbook. i tried to verify and repair, and this is the message i got.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

Im in mexico writing a book and so i really need help on this one guys.

Hi, hjbugs, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Disconnecting the drive while your Powerbook was accessing it probably caused your problem. It may be repairable using DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro, but if you don't have access to one of those and aren't going to buy one, reformatting the drive with Disk Utility may be the only other way to make it usable again. If it contains data you need to recover first (i.e., data that isn't also stored on your internal HD or other storage media), download the free demo version of one of the data recovery utilities mentioned in this thread and use it to see what is recoverable. If the files you need are recoverable, buy the full version of one of the utilities and recover them.

  • My Toshiba external hard drive is no longer being recognised by my Macbook Air - solution?

My Toshiba external hard drive is no longer being recognised by my Macbook Air. The light on the hard drive is on, but it won't appear on my computer's desktop or anywhere else. How can I fix this?

    Hi rivraff,
If you are having issues mounting an external hard drive volume, you may want to see if it shows up and/or can be repaired in Disk Utility; you may find the following article helpful:

My external hard drive will not open and only shows up in Disk Utilities. When I try yo repair it, it give me and error of invalid sibling link. How do I fix my external hard drive?

Invalid sibling link may not be fixable by Disk Utility. (Disk Utility is very conservative, and will not attempt repairs that might cause you to lose data.)
It is an indication of serious Directory damage.
    that leaves
    a) third-party Utilities that will take those risks, or
    b) re-initializing the drive (which deletes all your data) and restoring from another backup source.
    c) "Copying off whatever files you can salvage" has gone by, and you cannot copy anything off a drive that will not mount. You may be able to use "rescue" programs such as prosoft engineering Data Rescue to copy files to another drive, but that sounds a lot better than its reality. You may get many files, but not get ANY filenames.

  • My WD 2tb external hard drive will not unmount from my MacBook Pro.

My WD 2tb external hard drive will not unmount from my MacBook Pro. It no longer even shows up in finder, however it does show up in Disk Utility. I have tired so many of the suggestions on the internet all to a fail.
I keep getting the message to be sure that all applications are closed before ejecting the drive. I have no clue how to tell which appliactions are using the external drive to shut them off. I turned off Time Machiene to be safe.
I don't need anything on the external drive, I am just trying to erase it, save my current info, and migrate it to my new MacBook Pro.
I have been about four days now with this issue all over the internet, in this community, and watching videos on everything and nothing about this topic to a fail.
I think I am doomed and have lossed this external drive because of some wierd application that will NEVER close on my hard drive for it to disconnect correctly. It's annoying.
    Does anyone have a solution?

Have you trie using another USB port? Can you test the USB ports with other USB devices to assure they are working? You may want to reinstall OS X in case there has been a driver glitch.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Can you see them in Disk Utility?
If so, can you select and Mount them?
If not, disconnect them, reset the iMac's SMC and then reconnect them.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If you still can not see them, connect them back up to the iMac running the older OS, open Disk Utility and look to see how they are partitioned and formatted.

I tried your suggestion, and it's been giving me the message "Preparing for Backup" for the past 8 hours.  Does this mean TM is backing up my hard drive?  I'll give it a few more hours, but if nothing else happens, I'm not sure what else to do.  I'm not sure if there are any new external hard drives that are compatible with ML yet.
