External hard drive will not power on

I have a PH3200U-1E3S and it will not power up, every other push of the power button the light flashes once. I dont know what to do, any suggestions? The unit is not very old and it has all off our pictures on it.
please help,
Thanks Tony

If it is out of warranty, you might try opening it up and looking for a fuse inside. If you find one and it is blown, you should easily be able to find a replacement.

  • External hard drive will not power up on my macbook pro

I have a 120GB external hard drive that uses a USB port and it use to power up and work but now it just makes a clicking noise and nothing is recognized. the hard drive works on every other computer even pc's. the light on the hard drive is on but does not power up. Can someone help? thanks

hello. thanks for the help. It did come with a usb cable that had two plugs on one end. I never used both because the cord was not long enough to attach to both. I didnt have this problem at first. It would start right up but now it will not start at all. It does have an option for external power supply. Do you think I messed up the usb ports in the computer? thanks again for your help.

  • External Hard Drive will not power up

I've had a Toshiba External HDD for 2 years now and it was working perfectly. It has a blue light which comes up when powered up. Now it has suddenly stopped working.
When I connect it to the AC Adapter, there is no light, no power. The AC Adapter is a DURA MICRO INC Adapter Model DM5127. The light on the Adapter itself comes on
when I plug it in to the power but the moment I plug in the other end to the HDD, even that light goes off. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this . Could it be
a problem with the Adapter itself?
Any tips will be gratefully received as how I could go about resolving this. Almost all my data is in the HDD.

Hello, I helped install several external hard drives which also use that same model of Dura Micro power supply.
Unfortunately for 2 of these power supplies, they didn't seem very dura-ble, for they each developed a similar problem. The status LED on the hard drive would light up and stay on as normal, but the hard drives themselves would no longer power up. I tried a new adapter of the same model and the drive came back to life.
My guess is it may be your power supply, if you purchase replacements I'd get more than one.

I recently updated my 20-inch, Mid 2007 iMac with the latest OS 10.8.5 now my external hard drives will not show up. They show up when I boot them up on a machine running and earlier OS. Is there a fix for this?

Can you see them in Disk Utility?
If so, can you select and Mount them?
If not, disconnect them, reset the iMac's SMC and then reconnect them.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If you still can not see them, connect them back up to the iMac running the older OS, open Disk Utility and look to see how they are partitioned and formatted.

My external hard drive will not open and only shows up in Disk Utilities. When I try yo repair it, it give me and error of invalid sibling link. How do I fix my external hard drive?

Invalid sibling link may not be fixable by Disk Utility. (Disk Utility is very conservative, and will not attempt repairs that might cause you to lose data.)
It is an indication of serious Directory damage.
    that leaves
    a) third-party Utilities that will take those risks, or
    b) re-initializing the drive (which deletes all your data) and restoring from another backup source.
    c) "Copying off whatever files you can salvage" has gone by, and you cannot copy anything off a drive that will not mount. You may be able to use "rescue" programs such as prosoft engineering Data Rescue to copy files to another drive, but that sounds a lot better than its reality. You may get many files, but not get ANY filenames.

  • My WD 2tb external hard drive will not unmount from my MacBook Pro.

My WD 2tb external hard drive will not unmount from my MacBook Pro. It no longer even shows up in finder, however it does show up in Disk Utility. I have tired so many of the suggestions on the internet all to a fail.
I keep getting the message to be sure that all applications are closed before ejecting the drive. I have no clue how to tell which appliactions are using the external drive to shut them off. I turned off Time Machiene to be safe.
I don't need anything on the external drive, I am just trying to erase it, save my current info, and migrate it to my new MacBook Pro.
I have been about four days now with this issue all over the internet, in this community, and watching videos on everything and nothing about this topic to a fail.
I think I am doomed and have lossed this external drive because of some wierd application that will NEVER close on my hard drive for it to disconnect correctly. It's annoying.
    Does anyone have a solution?

Have you trie using another USB port? Can you test the USB ports with other USB devices to assure they are working? You may want to reinstall OS X in case there has been a driver glitch.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Toshiba ph3100u-1exb External Hard Drive Will Not Stay On

    Hello all.
I recently purchased a Toshiba ph3100u-1exb 1.0 TB external hard drive. It's working great, but the problem I am running into is that it will not stay powered on for more than a couple minutes. I'm sure that its some kind of power saving feature, but if there's a way to turn it off, I'd like to have the drive accessible at all times, as I use the information stored on it quite a bit.
When it powers down, I can always press the power button to bring it back up, but I would like to have it on all the time. Is there any way at all to do this? A setting on the drive, or possibly within Windows?
I have the drive hooked up via a USB cable, as this PC is a bit older and does not use the eSATA cables for hard drives.

    Hi
In my opinion the HDD should be checked with different computers and different OS (Vista, Win 7, Win XP). If the external HDD will not functions using different systems and computers then its definitely an HDD issue.
Ive got 2 different external HDDs one HDD died and I had to replace it.
In my opinion, if an HDD begins to malfunction then its mostly an hardware related issue and there is nothing to do as to replace the faulty drive

  • External Hard Drive Will Not Work

I  purchased the recommended 1TB WD hard drive.  It worked for a couple of days, recorded some programs-- all of which froze after a few minutes, and now my DVR repeatedly shuts down and reboots when the external drive is plugged in.  Here's the message I get:
the set-top box will reset because an external hard drive was improperly disconnected
The only way I have disconnected the drive is by going into settings and clicking on "EJECT" as recommended.
Would someone please tell me what is going on here?  Thanks.

Sorry to hear about the troubles you are having with the drive. One thing you can do to try to correct the drive issue is to hold down the power button on the drive. You will get a pop up message that an unknown storage device has been found. Click to accept the new device. The drive should now be connected. Go to the main menu of the DVR box and select the option for DVR.  Go to expanded storage and format the drive. Let us know if further assistance is needed.

  • External Hard Drive will not be recognised

I'm having an issue using a 60GB "Freecom" External Hard Drive with a PowerBookG4.
I can plug the drive into my MacBook Pro, but when I try to use it on the PowerBook it says that the drive has no recognizable files for Mac OSX.
I have Erased all the content and reformatted the External Drive a few times, however it will still not work. When I try to initialize the drive on the PowerBook, Dick Utility just hangs.
What I have noticed though is that the External Hard Drive is a "FUJITSU MHV2060AT" drive, and the PowerBook has a "FUJITSU MHT2060AT". Could this similarity have anything to do with it?
How can I solve this issue so I can use the drive on the PowerBook?

The Powerbook is notorious for having insufficient power over USB to run most external mobile drives. Current Freecom mobile drives have this disclaimer:
USB bus powered, no power adapter required*
    * valid for most computers. In case the power provided by the computer is not sufficient, visit www.freecom.com/support for an optional AC Adapter
You can also try a "Y" style USB cable which draws power from 2 USB ports, or a powered USB hub. I would try one of these power alternatives first, before looking for additional problems.

  • My Lacie external hard drive will not back up on Time Machine. Says there's not enough space. This has happened with every single external I've purchased. Thought TM was supposed to delete old backups??

My Lacie External backed up on Time Machine after the first back up but now says there's not enough room. I thought TM deleted old back ups to save new versions. What am I doing wrong. This happens to me constantly. Every single external hard drive I've purchased for the MacBook Pro (5 of them) has not worked either initially or at the second back up. It either isn't formatted properly so I have to go to Genius bar to help me set up for the first back up, or after the first back up, it says there's not enough space and I have to go back to Genius Bar. Is there a way I can fix this on my own?

I just purchased 2 external hardrives. a LaCie Minimus and a G Drive. Each 1 TB. The guy at Apple told me that would provide 2 good TM backups for me. My internal HD has 750 GB capacity, of which I'm using 700 GB. Perhaps the ratio is not great enough. I do wish they would have told me this before I purchased the two Bummmmer! I even had them format and get the first back-ups going because of issues I've had in the past. I also just bought a 750 GB for photos.
So, I won't be able to buy another bigger external since I've just purchased 3. Ugh. Well, I'll just exclude some files and divide things up. Eventually, I just want my 20,000 iphotos on one of the 1TB externals, and a TM back-up on another so that iphoto will function once more. It really hates how many photos I have and is brutally punishing me for it.I seriously need to do some housecleaning!
Thanks for the advice. Just moved from US to Australia last week and was hoping to upload a few photos and the domino effect has lead me to this. Just went to Genius Bar in Perth today and they told me how to reformat drive to transfer iphoto library over, but I got stuck at trying to back-up my TM.

  • My external hard drive will not show up in iMovie 10.0.4.  How do I copy my movies into it?

My Mac OSX 10.9.4 has both iMovie 10 and iMovie 9. I've started uploading all of my videos from my camera to iMovie 10 and have not worried about my external hard drive. Now it's been a couple months of putting those videos onto iMovie 10 and I just connected my external hard drive and it doesn't show up in sidebar anywhere.  Is this new to iMovie 10? How can I copy my events and projects to my external hard drive from imovie 10?
If iMovie 10 is the issue, I will gladly begin using iMovie 9 again, but will need those events to get into iMovie 9.  Is there anyway to move movies in iMovie 10 to iMovie 9.
    Thanks for the help!

    Hi bwright22,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to copy videos to and from an external hard disk in iMovie. Take a look at the article linked below, I believe it has the information that you're looking for.
iMovie (2013): Work with multiple libraries
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14745
Show or hide the Libraries list
You select libraries and events in the Libraries list.
To show the Libraries list: Click the Show button  on the left side of the toolbar.
To hide the Libraries list: Click the Hide button  on the left side of the toolbar.
You can also choose Window > Hide Libraries (or press Shift-Command-1).
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or hard disks
Connect a hard disk that contains the target library to your computer, or copy the target library to your computer.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu.
You can choose from recently opened libraries at the top of the submenu, locate an existing library on your computer, or create a new library.
The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.
Note:   To select multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.
    I hope this helps.

  • External Hard Drive will not mount

My external hard drive that I been storing all my aperture files on is not mounting to the desktop. I can see the hard drive when I use my disk utility, but it doesn’t show up in the desktop.
When I purchased the hard drive originally I didn’t format to apple but it worked fine.

Make sure the drive is powered from from its separate power source, not solely through the FW or USB connection.
If it is a dual connectivity drive, try connecting from the second method (e.g. if you are using the much preferable FW, try switching to the much-less-good USB).
Repair Permissions, even though that is fairly unlikely to have any impact.

  • External Hard Drives will not Mount

I have a WD & LaCie external hard drives in my iMac G5 they have been working fine until I started using the new Time Machine program. Now the drive show up in disk utility but not on the desktop. Disk utility has been no help in repairing them and in its log states " Invalid content in Journal " .
How do I get my drives back ?

I did an archive reinstall of Leopard and I still had my problem, so I schleped it down to the Apple store and for the life of me We could not make it happen, drives shoed up fine and worked fine. I think I have a bad FW port that is intermittant but for now I cannot have them fix something that seems to work...
I dont thisnk we have the same problem, because when I had my drives not showing up on the desktop, they were not showing up in Disk Utilitiy either.
Is there data on those drives that you must have? If not I would try reformatting them with Disk Utility ("erase") and see if they reappear. If there is data on them, I would try running a better utility program such as DiskWarrior, I think you can run it on external Disks to rebuild the directory. The problem is that the present version, 4.0 is not compatible with Leopard. The new one is out soon if not already for Leopard. There is no guarantee that that will work, but may be worth a try.
