External hard drive wiped  ____is it possible to recover?____

I have done something really stupid. Whilst attempting to extend the partition for my boot camp with winclone, I inadvertently wiped my external hard drive by creating a partition the whole size of the external hard drive instead of 40g which would have backed up my windows, now I have lost all my data on the external hard drive, does anyone know a way of recovering the data - a free download preferably??
Went into the disk utility and renamed the original external hard drive, creating a new blank partition the whole size of my EHD.
Please help

Hey Moonra1 and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
I put in the "tiger" disc to run disc repair and it reported that the disc could not be fixed.
You you seem to be saying that disk utility can see the disk so...
The best thing to try is to use another Mac and put your iBook into target mode:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
You'll need another Mac and a FireWire cable. You can use Data Rescue II:
http://www.prosofteng.com/downloads/download.php?prodID=51
is the URL for the free demo. You can download 5 MB for free and you'll have to buy the full up version to download more. If you run the scan either quick or longer one and see the files you need you might be able to get by with the 5 MB demo for your tax files.

  • Create recovery media external hard drive wiped?

HP Envy 17 Notebook 17-k206naL0G03EA#ABU Hello, First time poster. First time HP owner. Hope someone can help me. Have not long had my new laptop and was directed by the HP support assistant to create recovery media.I have done this but used my external hard drive. It now seems that all the files I had on my external drive have gone. Is there some way i can return my external hard drive to its previous state and recover all my files? Cheers Sam.

Drives that you buy usually are formatted MSDOS (aka FAT or FAT32) for PC's and Mac's can read and write to this format, unless you specifically formatted the drive in Disk Utility to OS X Extended (journaled) so I'm guesing here is was "MSDOS" already from the begining and didn't change.
Your hardware description isn't specific enough, so please update with the latest machine and operating system so we know.
I'm suspecting something is wrong with your USB port(s) as you seem to have a lot of drives and perhaps your computers ports are worn out and this is resulting in a error message as the computer isn't making a good connection on the hardware as it appearing for many drives.
Also if your using port powered drives you may want to use a powered USB hub, as Apple has limited the power drain on USB and this could be a issue.
Of course the obvious, the new cable is bad.

  • External Hard Drive Won't Mount- Need to recover files

    Hello Everyone,
I am hoping that one of you fine mac experts may be able to assist ~
Problem: External Seagate FreeAgent Desktop USB external hard drive
won't mount on desktop=ie: no access to my important files.. Please Help!
    Details:
External seagate freeagent 500 GB Desktop USB HD ( only 2 months old)
(using for document / file backup-not as a startup disc)
    on my Mac G3 350 MZ Blue & White Tower /768 ram/ running OSX 10.1.5 & OS9.2~
    ~
Problem: Started using the external 500 GB HD 2 months ago -with no problems-until this morning. Tried to double click to open it to access files
and got the "beach ball of death" and needed to restart.
My trusty G3 started up fine, however, the external HD was now
not showing up on the desktop as normal. I troubleshooted -by restarting,
trying different a/c plugs/ different USB ports , ran disk utility..called
seagate -not much help . Seagate said to try the HD on another mac-which I did-
    a G5 tower- same problem.
    ~
The External hard drive will show up in disk utility, but is grayed out.
and when click "mount" same two messages keep showing:
message 1: "a disk attempting to mount as unknown has failed verification or has failed to
mount.please use disk utility to check the disk"
    ~
message 2- when unplugging and repluggin the usb in-and upon
restart:" you have inserted a disk containg no volumes that mac osx
can read to use unreadable volumes, click initialize to continue with the disk inserted ,click continue"
    ~
( I really need access to these files- and do not want to re-initialize the HD!!)
I ran Disk Utility /first aid "verify & repair , the following info came up:
Repairing disk "main backup 2007 ".
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid key length ( <<<IN RED )
    Repair completed. "
    ~~
Though it said the repair was completed, the "invalid key length" issue
still comes up when re-running disk utility...Hard drive would still not
mount on desktop-even after restarting .

If there is a mac genius out there that can help?- it would be greatly
appreciated. I have tried to call seagate several times in the last several hours-
1st time-they disconnected me after being on hold 10 minutes-2nd call
I was put on hold for 40 minutes ..Finally spoke to someone ( they are not mac users or mac experts!)and he said I would need to send it to Seagate's Data Recovery-... for a fee of course!

At this point, I am hoping to just get the files and photos off
the hard drive- I heard about Disk Warrior-should I use that and if so
    what version?
    Thank you very much!

Will zapping the PRAM be of any use in getting the external to mount on the desktop?
Your external Hard drive is already recognized. But it cannot be mounted on the desktop due to its directory damage. You can certainly Zap the PRAM, and it will not hurt anything, but I am skeptical that it will change the situation.
Do you think the Disk Warrior 4.0 cd will even work on my G3 350MHZ running Mac OS 10.1.5?
If you boot from the CD and run it from the CD, absolutely yes. If you attempt to INSTALL it from a download or a CD, probably not.
Have you ever used Disc Warrior and is using it complicated?
I own and use Disk Warrior. You select the drive to be rebuilt, it builds a proposed new directory from the information and file fragments available.
When complete, it will provide a list of problems encountered, tell you what files have been placed in the "Rescued Items" folder, and allow you too look at your drive using the proposed new directory. Your only decision is whether the new directory seems to be an improvement over the old \[in your case, hopelessly corrupted] directory. You then tell it whether to replace the old directory with the proposed new directory, or to abandon its work and leave your Hard Drive unchanged.
Is there a good chance that the ext HD will still have my files on it- or do you think from what I've described that they are gone ?
From what you have described, your files are very likely to still be there. Sometimes in a situation like this, a handful of files cannot be recovered.
My other thought was to take the external HD there and have them try to recover the files.
Make sure you completely understand the costs involved. File recovery using a service like DriveSavers can run into many hundreds of dollars. They are prepared to disassemble your drive in a clean room and replace controller boards and read/write heads to achieve success. Your drive has serious, but not fatal, Directory damage. The Hardware, and most of your files, are likely just fine.

  • Is it possible to setup the time capsule as an external hard drive (wireless)

Hi, I have purchased a time capsule and looking to use it to automatically backup my data but also would like to see it on my mac book pro as an external hard drive (wireless); is that possible????????????? if yes how???

OK.. the TC is really designed for wired connection.
There is a hidden option.. hold the option key, when you select wireless mode, to join a wireless network. This is hidden because it is poor.. you join the TC to the mifi myfy and then yes, you can access it over wireless network.. but it is now half the speed of direct access due to double hop wireless. The TC is also going to not allow access directly by wireless or ethernet. So the option is there .. it is hidden due to being bad.
You will particularly notice what happens now is during backups your internet will crawl.. because you are saturating the local connection.
If I was in your situation.. I would buy thunderbolt to ethernet adapter and plug directly into the TC.. or scrap the TC and plug directly into a hard disk. The TC now gains you nothing.. it is unsuited to this sort of network.
But another solution is to buy USB wireless stick.. these are tiny things.. and cheap and plenty are Mac OS compatible. Plug it in and use it as a secondary wireless client.. with fixed IP you can now connect directly to the TC .. single hop wireless.. much faster and no interference on the myfi link.
You also don't have another wire plugged into your laptop which is messy.
    OR
Scrap the myfy for a proper 3G router with ethernet.. you can usually just swap the sim over.. this is a much better solution as you put the TC back to its native correct operating mode..
Well there are some possible solutions.

  • Share library thats on external hard drive

I have found documentation on how to share my iTunes library between 2 user accounts on my mac which is what I want to do, however my iTunes library is stored on an external hard drive.  Is it possible to still share the music between 2 accounts and let each account update it as I would normally as if I wasn't sharing it.

if your entire iTunes folder, including the iTunes library file ...
... is stored on the external, all you need to do is launch iTunes on each account while holding the option (⌥) key. when prompted, click on choose library and select the iTunes folder on the external.
note that only one iTunes at a time can access the library. if you're using fast user switching, user A must quit iTunes before user B can fire it up.

  • Multiple Hard Drives, External Hard Drive

I'm not sure exactly how to phrase this question. I've been using Apple's Aperture program, but now that I'm subscribed to CS Cloud, I want to try Lightroom.
I installed Lightroom. During the installation process, I created a new folder for storing information about photos @ Users/myname/Pictures/Lightroom/Lightroom 4 Catalog.lrcat
Then I read an article about exporting images from Aperture to Lightroom that said you should set things up on an external hard drive, because your image collection is eventually going to be too big for your internal hard drive. That makes sense.
So before I continue, let me explain my situation. I'm not a photographer (yet), but I have thousands of images that I use on several different websites. My biggest project is an online encylopedia of life that will feature countless images of plants and animals.
So let's say I have six websites, and I decide to create a library for each of the first five, plus half a dozen libraries for the biology site (Mammals, Birds, Plants, etc.). And let's also say I set up shop on an external hard drive.
Will the information for all these libraries be stored in the folder Lightroom 4 Catalog.lrcat on my computer? Or do I need to create a new .lrcat folder on my external hard drive? Will I need a separate .lrcat folder for each library?
I'd prefer to export all my images from Aperture into Lightroom in a library (or libraries) in my internal hard drive - for now. When it gets too big, then I can move it to an external hard drive. Is this possible?
The instructions I've read for exporting images from Aperture are kind of confusing; I think I just need to do it and clean up the mess later.
    Thanks.

Lirghtroom 4 Catalog.lrcat is not a folder. (Or at least, it shouldn't be a folder) It is a file which contains your Lightroom database. Everything you do in Lightroom, all of the editing, all of the metadata, and everything else you create (but not the images themselves) is stored in the database. Thus, Lightroom (via the database) must know where your photos are at all times. If you move or rename a photo outside of Lightroom, then Lightroom cannot work with this photo (although you can fix this very simply). The recommendation for beginners is to do all photo management inside of Lightroom. This is a crucial understanding to your proper use of Lightroom.
Your .lrcat file(s) can be on any hard disk, external or internal. The usual recommendation is to put your catalog(s) on the fastest hard disk, which is the internal disk.
Some people (including me) think one large catalog is the way to go. There are many advantages. But other people think multiple catalogs is the way to go. In your case, in a photo is going to be used on multiple web sites, then I would recommend a single catalog. If a photo can be used on one (and only one) web site, then multiple catalogs probably works, one for each web site.
I'd prefer to export all my images from Aperture into Lightroom in a library (or libraries) in my internal hard drive - for now. When it gets too big, then I can move it to an external hard drive. Is this possible?
To me, this sounds like you are creating extra work for yourself. If you think that at some point you are going to want your photos on an external drive, just put them there to begin with. Then you don't have the extra effort of moving photos from here to there (but yes it is possible). In my opinion, there is almost no performance penalty for having photo on an external drive.
You might want to consider watching some introductory videos about Lightroom, for example

I can't answer questions about Aperture.

  • Is the AirPort Time Capsule only for backing up Macs or can I back up additional files from SD cards too as if it were an external hard drive?

I'm a professional photographer and I'm interested in the most recent features of the AirPort Time Capsule. I process a lot of data and much of it never hits my Mac hard drive. Currently I back up to external hard drives, but is it possible to back up files from SD cards mounted on my desktop on to the AirPort Time Capsule for instant access in the future as if the drive were an external hard drive (in addition to being a back up server)?
    I appreciate input!

If your question is whether Time Machine can back up the data on the SD drives, the answer would be no.
The reason for this is that SD drives are formatted in Windows FAT16, which is not compatible with Time Machine, the backup application included with Macs.

In one location, I use my laptop connected to an external hard drive. My iTunes folder and most of the music files are on the external hard drive. When I try to open iTunes at another location (without the external HD attached) I get an error message which says "Be folder iTunes cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is in 'My Music' folder." I would like to be able to open iTunes on the laptop without being connected to the external hard drive. Is this possible? Can my set up be configured so that some of my files are on the laptop HD, others on the external HD and perhaps also use a network drive. Of course right now I'd settle for just opening iTunes while I'm at my remote location. I've tried reinstalling and repairing the iTunes program well not connected to the external HD. I thought of on installing iTunes and then reinstalling that while not connected to the external HD. I must admit I'm afraid to do this without advice from someone more knowledgeable than me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Boot Camp on External Hard Drive

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro 15-inch running Lion(10.7.3). I want to install windows 7, but i want to use a external hard drive. Is that possible?

BCA is a one trick pony.
If you intend to use the internal you have two ways:
Put a tiny OS X and use BCA and devote most of the hard drive and leave minimum for OS X
    or
disconnect the external and boot from Windows DVD and then delete all the partitions and give the whole drive over to Windows (it will format, you don't need to) and have 100% Windows only - no BCA used (just download the support drivers) in which case knowing how PITA BCA is, you might still need that tiny OS X is.
Clone OS X where you need it with Carbon Copy Cloner to clone Lion and Lion Recovery
