  • Using external hard drive for music files NOT in iTunes music folder

Hi there. Due to lacking disk space on my computer I have all my music files (that I had before using iTunes) on an external HD. I can easily import these drives to iTunes (v.8) without copying them to the iTunes music folder. But when I want to synchronize my iPod the next time, iTunes cannot find the files on my external HD and I have to import them all again, delete all the duplicates and - worst of all - do all the playlist sorting again! Is there a solution to this without putting all my music into the iTunes music folder (I would like to keep it separated)? Thanks in advance!

I use an external firewire drive to store my iTunes library on. One thing to be aware of...
You need to go into your iTunes preferences, then to "Advanced", then select the location where you want to store your iTunes Music folder. In my case it is in a folder titled "Music" on my external firewire drive. The iTunes "Library" file is stored on your internal hard drive.
The thing that can cause you problems it that....if you forget to turn on the external drive before you boot up your Mac, the iTunes library file will look for your music folder and won't be able to find it. So a new iTunes Music folder will be created on your internal hard drive, with nothing in it. You'll see all of your songs listed in your iTunes program...but if you try to double click on any of the songs to play them, you'll get an exclamation mark saying "cannot find file".
If this happens, you need to delete the new iTunes Music folder on your internal drive (but not the iTunes Library file!), then quit iTunes, turn on the external drive, then relaunch iTunes....and it will find the original music folder.
It's a hassle that I have had to go though many times, I keep forgetting to turn on that drive before launching iTunes.
Oh, one other thing....about the way you worded your post. You aren't running short on "memory", you are running short on "storage"....they are two different things. Hard drives are storage, RAM chips are "memory" that run your programs.

  • Troubles with making iPod an external hard drive. Very frustrated. Please help..

I need to make my iPod an external hard drive, and the “enable disk use” option does not appear for me. I've gone through all the settings, reverted back to 10.7 and gone through all of those settings too. I've watched a million ****ing tutorials and I still can't find it.  The reason I ask is because I want to switch to Winamp media player, which also has the ability to manage music on mobile devices (including iPod), but Winamp wont recognize my iPod unless it's an external hard drive. I'm going to go insane, if I can't get my music back for school work. Thanks for anyone that helps.

    Here's another one:
You need iOS 7.0 and Mac OS X 10.8.  I have an Ipod Touch 4. I tried to update iOS from 6.1.6 to 7.0. I got no error message, but I checked "software update" in the ipod settings. The iOS version is still 6.1.6 and it says that "my software is up to date".  So go figure!
You need to install it on both your Mac and your iOS device.  The screenshot above is from: http://www.beyondf.com/airbridge/.  The page contains links to both the Mac and the iOS versions.

  • Major External Hard Drive Issues... Please Help!

    Hey Everyone,
I own an Iomega Silver High Speed USB 2.0 Hard Drive 250 GB... I used to use it to store files for my old XP machine... and would now like to use it for my Macbook running 10.5.2 since my PC died.
    The problem I have:
The drive does not mount on the desktop and when I go into Disk Utilities, it shows the drive as having 744.9 GB of space rather than 232.9 GB as it actually has.
Furthermore, I cannot "Erase" or "Partition" the drive because I get the error "Resource Busy". However, when I plug the drive into a Macbook running Tiger and try to partition the drive, the blue progress bar at the bottom jumps to 1/4 done and then does not move at all.
I have plugged the drive into a Windows XP machine and it cannot partition the drive properly either..
Please help! You guys are my last hope since I called Iomega... who say it is clearly NOT a hardware issue and referred e to Apple Tech support who did not resolve the issue and had me on hold for 40 minutes...
I beseech you, please help fix my hard drive... I don't need the data on it, I just need a hard drive that works as soon as possible...

Hi! "However, when I plug the drive into a Macbook running Tiger and try to partition the drive, the blue progress bar at the bottom jumps to 1/4 done and then does not move at all." If the disk is damaged (which is is) then the format would likely take 12-24 hours to complete so if you interrupted it it could have damaged the disk. I have a new disk that I never could get partitioned and is damaged beyond repair. Ok try this restart the computer with the disk off. Then turn the disk on and see if it brings up the message that the disk is unreadable and takes you to the disk utility. Also sometimes changing usb ports or trying to format it on another computer works. Tom

  • Time Machine: External Hard Drive with Additional Files + Back-up

    Hi-
I am hoping someone can clarify something for me. I use a 500GB external drive (WD-My Book) to back-up my macbook periodically (2x month). I also use this same external drive to store additional files from an old computer.
I just spoke with some folks at Apple and they confused me and made me think that I might have inadvertently deleted some of the original non-back-up files. However, I have scoured the drive and everything seems to be there IN Addition to the backups.backupdb folder.
Can someone reassure me that I have not somehow corrupted/lost either the original files or the back-up files?
I have read the tutorials posted in 2009 - and realize that I should have partitioned the drive, but I didn't. Moving forward I will purchase a dedicated drive just for back-ups - but want to be able to sleep tonight and not worry . . .
    Thanks!

    Wow-Thanks again.
Apple Support was marginally helpful. After the rep told me I probably lost data, my anxiety rose . . .
My original Time Machine question to Apple Support =
My MacBook cannot handle all the media I have. So, I bought a Seagate 1TB to hold movies, photos, and music. If I have the 1TB Seagate plugged in to my MacBook at my designated back-up time, will Time Machine back both the HD and Seagate 1TB to a new (yet-to-be-purchased) 2TB External drive (which will be purchased solely for Time Machine files)?
Yes, as long as both are formatted for a Mac (see #1 in Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks).
The Seagate might have been automatically excluded from backups; if so, it's easily removed, via Time Machine Preferences > Options. If it's listed in the exclusion box +*in black,+* (while it's connected) just select it and click the minus sign at the bottom. If it's listed in gray, it's not formatted properly -- Time Machine can't back it up, and you can't remove it from the exclusion list.
I'm having a difficult time knowing if I'm utilizing Time Machine properly. Since I have a MacBook it doesn't make sense for me to have Time Machine continuously running in the background. So, I only back-up 2 or 3 times a month. And, each time - I seem to get nervous that I'm not doing something correctly.
Time Machine was designed to back up hourly. On a desktop Mac, it's best to let it do just that.
On a laptop, of course, that's rarely practical. But you probably should back up more often -- when your internal HD fails (they all do, sooner or later), or something else awful happens to your Mac, you risk losing everything you've done since the last backup. Think of your Address book, browser bookmarks & history, documents, and especially your media files.
You might want to consider backing-up over your network. It doesn't sound like you also have a desktop Mac, but if you do, you can back up to a "shared" drive on it.
It's a lot more money, but Apple designed the Time Capsule as a combination wireless router and hard drive specifically for Time Machine backups. Most folks do the initial backup while connected via an Ethernet cable, but subsequently Time Machine can do those hourly backups wirelessly, as long as your Mac is awake and in range of the Time Capsule. See http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC344LL/A/Time-Capsule-2TB?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mc o=MTMzNzU2MjI
But as long as you're diligent about doing your backups regularly via an external drive, a TC may not be worth the big bucks, especially if you already have a wireless router.

  • Restoring iPhoto contents from an external hard drive results in duplicates! Please help!

    Hi Folks,
I have an iMac 2.8Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo computer that had it's DVD fried and I gave it to Apple to fix it. They did and they also upgraded me to the Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4. I am not sure if I am a fan of this OS but that's a different story. I had backed up everything to an external hardrive (not using time Machine). The external drive is a Hitachi and came with it's own back-up software for the Mac. I was able to restore everything except iPhoto properly. By the time I specified the directory that contained my library information, I ended up getting duplicates events/pictures of EVERYTHING to the point where it has eaten up more than 100GB of my 350GB hard-drive
Now I have been looking through all of the duplicate events that iPhoto created, I see that most of them are thumbnails. I also downloaded photosweeper Lite to find duplicate pictures and that didn't help. I am a Unix hack and could write some sort of script to compare the fine names etc but I know that's not a practice that's encouraged and I really don't have the time to putz with it.
So can you please let me know how can I re-restore iPhoto properly please given what was in the back-up hardware? Here is what the directory structure looks like in the external drive:
    Hitachi Restore/Users/mrghoo/Pictures/iPhoto Library
The content of the above directory is:

I am sorry for the long winded request but if anyone could help, I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear of your difficulties.
Simply copy the iPhoto Library Folder from the back up to the Pictures Folder on the MBP and launch iPhoto. It will do the rest.
Alternatively, you can leave the library where it is and hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the Library on the Back Up disk.

  • External hard drive from pc to mac please help

My HP motherboard fried but the hard drive was fine. I extracted it, and put it an external enclosure and made it external. I plugged it in and it shows up on disk utility, but now I don't know what to do. I want to be able to transfer my old files to my new Mac. It says disk1s1 (the part with all of the files) isn't mounted. Should I mount it? will this erase my old data? Thanks

    Hello jnorris5
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If the drive shows up in disk utility then it should show up in Finder (desktop). If it does show in Finder then all you have to do is drag and drop the files that you want to the Mac.
As the other poster stated you may be running NTFS file system on the ext drive, this is not a problem if you're only reading or copying the files. If you plan on writing to the drive with your Mac then you'll need to either format the drive (once you get the data off) to OSX Extended (Journaled) or FAT. You can alternately use a third party program such as paragon or macdrive, suggested by the other poster.
But if all you want to do is get the data from the drive to the Mac then just plug it in drag and drop the files.

5th worst, geez, I'm not sure!
As far as Windows goes, I think more things have gone backwards since XP, W7 improving on Vista, but...
As far as OSX goes, more steps backwards than forwards since Tiger/10.4.11
Even Linux is going backwards now... & it wasn't always that easy to start with, it's outdone it's usefullness trying to incorporate the worst features of Windows &
    OSX!
I totally agree on the Backup thing, but which exact 3 TB are you thinking of, many are worthless & unreliable???
And BTW, I think Time Machine is the worst backup solution ever invented, but if you have trouble using a TV Remote, it's better than a swift kick in the pants!

I have just selected all my desktop icons and accidentally deleted them.  This included my external hard drive with 22,000 photos in iPhoto.  I cannot open iPhoto now.  Can someone help please?

What is the file system of that external HD? is it MacOS Extended (Journaled)?
Which iPhoto version do you have?
If you directly select the iPhoto Library in the Finder and use "File > Get Info", does the library still show as "Kind: iPhoto Library" and is the file size correct for 22000 Photos?
If the library does no longer have the correct size, restore it from your backup.
But if the library has the correct size, try to open it directly by clicking it. This should work, if your iPhoto version is iPhoto '11.

can this device be used as an external hard drive with a macbook pro laptop and use files on the airport time capsule?

If you mean an AirPort base station other than the Time Capsule, it doesn't have internal storage.
If you mean a Time Capsule, its internal drive can be used for regular file storage but shouldn't be; as with all drives, it'll eventually fail. You're better off using a standalone drive and setting Time Machine to back it up as well.

    Re Time Machine
I have an external  hard drive with files I backed up manually over the past 2 years 1TB of memory.
I am finally taking the leap to use Time machine to back everything.
will I have to reformat that drive, thus wiping my previous back ups?
can I split it the drive in two partitions?
    Also
as I have two separate Macbook Pro's- one older than the other.
    OSX 10.68
    the other is
    OSX 10.75
can I back them up separately?
or even synch and merge files and folders etc? between the two?

You CAN use a drive with files already on it to store Time Machine backups. But long term, that is not recommended. You do not need to reformat or re-partition the drive to do this. Once Time Machine Backups are established, you could remove the old files.
But do not delete Time Machines files with the Finder -- that can cause it to lose its place and lose everything.
With the cost of backup drives under US$100, it might be a better idea in the long run to get another drive. Best results from Time Machine is a drive about 3 times larger than the drive(s) you are backing up.

Many users keep their iTunes libraries on external drives. You just have to remember to connect and power up the drive before launching iTunes.

I have an external hard drive with numerous WMA files that I would like to download to iTunes. How do I do  this on my MAC?

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
